Utes Resume Regular Season with Three Matches this Weekend

After Tuesday’s exhibition match, the University of Utah volleyball team hits the road for the first time this season as it will play three matches in two days at the Yale Invitational. All matches will be played at the John Lee Ampitheater (2,800) in New Haven, Conn. The Utes open play Friday against Colgate at 5 p.m. ET, then will play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting against Boston College at 1 p.m., then against host Yale at 7 p.m. ET.

Utes on the Road

Saturday’s match against Yale, will be Utah’s first road match of the season. The Utes were 8-5 in road matches last year, including a 2-1 mark in non-conference matches.

Numerical Roster

blocks and two digs. Defensively, both Morgan and McKenzie Odale (Star, Idaho) along with Chelsey Schofield tied for team-high honors with six digs apiece. Utah hit for percentages of .250 and .464 during the first two sets, both wins, but failed to go over .125 on the attack in the remaining three sets of the match.

Utah Classic Review

The Utes opened their season by going 2-1 in the annual Utah Classic. Utah won a 3-0 decision over Weber State (25-23, 25-18, 25-21), in its season opener on Friday. The Utes outhit the Wildcats .190 to .068 and outblocked the WSU, 6.0 to 5.0 .

Utah earned a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-14, 25-16) over Cal State Northridge on Saturday morning. In its second consecutive sweep to start the season, Utah outhit Cal State Northridge .284 to .009 in the match and held a 12.5 to 2.0 edge in team blocks.

Utah held a 16.5-3 advantage in team blocks over Northwestern and held the Wildcats to a .163 clip but dropped a 3-0 decision (19-25, 24-26, 24-26) Saturday night in what turned out to be the championship match of the Utah Classic.

Block Party

The Utes held a 3.9-1.1 advantage in blocks per set over their opponents during the opening weekend at the Utah Classic. Utah enjoyed a 35.0-10.0 advantage in team blocks through its first three matches of the season, including a 29.0-3.0 edge against Cal State Northridge and Northwestern.

All-Tournament Utes

Sophomores Morgan Odale and Erin Redd (Spanish Fork, Utah) were named to the 2011 Utah Classic All-Tournament team.Redd committed only eight errors on 55

attack attempts for a .291 efficiency to go with 2.67 kills per set while tying for team-high honors with three service aces. She ranked second on the Utah squad with 3.94 points per set during the opening weekend. Defensively, she led the Ute front row with 1.89 blocks per set.

In Friday’s season-opening victory over Weber State, Redd registered seven kills and a pair of service errors to go along with three blocks during the 3-0 win. In Saturday morning’s sweep of Cal State Northridge, Redd connected on eight kills on 15 swings for a .533 hitting percentage and led Utah with a match-high six blocks. During the tournament final against Northwestern, Redd tied for team-high honors with nine kills and tied for the team-high with a career-high eight blocks.

Odale averaged 3.00 kills per set on a .241 hitting efficiency as well as 3.00 digs and 0.44 blocks per set during the tournament.

Odale totaled eight kills to go along with six digs Friday against Weber State. Saturday against Cal State Northridge, Odale turned in a match-high 10 kills on a .286 hitting percentage to go with seven digs and two blocks. In the finale against Northwestern, Odale tied Redd for team-high honors with nine kills and just missed her first double-double of 2011 after collecting 14 digs.

Smashing Debut

In her first three matches as a Ute at the 2011 Utah Classic last weekend, freshman outside hitter Chelsey Schofield (Provo, Utah) posted a team-high 3.25 kill-per-set average with 26 kills over eight sets. Schofield showed her versatility by finishing the opening weekend third on the team with an average of 2.75 digs per set. Schofield hit for 15 kills in her Ute debut to lead Utah to a 3-0 win over Weber State.

• The Bulldogs return nine letterwinners from last year’s Ivy League championship team, including first-team all-Ivy performers Bridget Hearst and Kendall Polan, second-team all-Ivy middle hitter Haley Wessels. Polan was also Ivy League Rookie of the Year.

• Last season, Yale finished with an 18-8 overall record and a 12-2 league mark.

She also added six digs and three blocks against Utah’s in-state rival. Schofield had five kills to go with four digs and four blocks the next afternoon against Cal State Northridge then registered 12 digs, six blocks as well as six kills in the nightcap against Northwestern.

The Setup

McKenzie Odale distributed a career-high 34 assists Saturday against Cal State Northridge. She also had 13 digs for her third career double-double and her first this season and pitched in two blocks.

‘Sim’-ply Put

Sophomore libero Nikki Sim (Salt Lake CIty, Utah) collected 35 digs through nine sets of play for a team-high 3.89 dig-per-set average.

In Utah’s season-opening three-set victory over Weber State, Sim registered a career-high 14 digs in her first career start, which was the first double-figure-dig performance of her career. She followed that up with a second consecutive 14-dig performance versus Cal State Northridge. Digs were a valuable commodity Saturday night against Northwestern, but Sim still added seven more digs to her total.

Utes Go International

Head coach Beth Launiere, Killpack and Morgan Odale represented Utah at the USA/BIP Team in the 2011 European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia last July. McKenzie Odale, Sim, Schofield, Spurrier and Bailey Bateman (West Hooper, Utah) competed in the tournament for the Utah Select squad. The seventh annual tournament was sponsored by Bring It Promotions and held at the Dom Sportova in Pula.

Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll

Utah was picked 10th in its inaugural Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll. USC is the preseason favorite to win the 2011 Pac-12 championship. Reigning national runner-up California was picked second, followed by Washington.

Five Pac-12 teams were ranked among the top 12 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Coaches poll. Two of the top three teams in the nation are from the Pac-12, with California in first and USC placing third in the country. Stanford (sixth) and Washington (eighth) were ranked among the top 10, while UCLA placed just out of the top 10, earning 880 points to occupy 12th. Oregon received a first-place vote in the poll and moved up to 16th after picking up a four-set win at then-top-ranked Penn State on Friday.
