MAT188H1S LINEAR ALGEBRA: Course Information December 22, 2014

Lectures: Mondays, 6:10-9 PM in GB221, starting Jan 12. The instructor is D. Burbulla

Textbook: Elementary Linear Algebra with Applications by Jeffrey Holt. Warning: this is only thesecond time we are using Holt’s book. Its order of topics is totally different than the order oftopics in books we were using previously. Keep this in mind when you look at old tests andexams prior to 2013. Moreover, Holt includes much more material on linear transformations thanour previous books, but less material on vectors in three dimensions than our previous books.Anything you know from high school—such as the dot product, the cross product, equations oflines and planes in three dimensions—can be used in this course, if it helps you.

Marking Scheme: WeBWorK Problem Sets: 10% Quizzes: 20% Test: 20% Final Exam: 50%

Homework: some exercises have been picked as suggested homework; see the back of this page. These are the ones that your TA should be prepared to help you with.

Tutorials: are Wednesdays, 4:10-6 PM in RS211. Tutorials start on Wednesday, Jan 14.

WeBWorK Problem Sets: there will be five Problem Sets. Due dates can be found on the obverseof this page. The link for WeBWorK is available in the Course Materials of the MAT188 websiteon the Portal.

Quizzes: There will be five 30 min quizzes, to be held in the last 30 min of tutorial on Jan 14, Jan 28,Feb 11, Mar 18 and Apr 1. Only the best four quizzes will be counted.

Final Exam: The final exam, 2 and 1/2 hours long, will be scheduled by the Faculty office, duringthe exam period, April 14 to April 29.
