Month 1 – Mastery: Personal Development and Leadership
Course Goal: To understand the meaning of mastery and how to achieve it.
Strategies for achieving goal
I will read the course book “Mastery” by Robert Greene
I will learn how to use library resources such as EBSCOhost databases
I will learn how to use Tumblr by watching tutorials on Lynda.com
Month 2 – Filmmaking Concepts and Practices
Course Goal: Learn the theory and practice of film production.
Strategies for achieving goal
Research latest trends in film production
Research current filmmakers on EBSCOhost to learn about their experiences
Volunteer to work on the thesis project being produced this month
Month 3 – Script Production and Analysis
Course Goal: To learn the techniques used to write film scripts.
Strategies for achieving goal
I will learn how to use Final Draft by watching tutorials on Lynda.com
I will read “The Art of Dramatic Writing” by Lajos Egri
I will work with the scriptwriting teacher to develop a script for my thesis project
Month 4 – Directing Talent
Course Goal: To understand the responsibilities of the film director.
Strategies for achieving goal
I will read “Directing Actors” by Judith Weston
I will research well known directors on EBSCOhost to learn about their experiences
I will attempt to put into practice the concepts I learn by directing a short film in my spare time
Month 5 – Experimental Filmmaking
Course Goal: Explore nontraditional forms of visual storytelling.
Strategies for achieving goal
I will research methods of creating stop motion videos
I will read the following article on EBSCOhost: Turvey, M., Jacobs, K., Windhausen, F., Jacobs, F., Street, M., Sachs, L., & Recoder, L. (2011). Roundtable on Digital Experimental Filmmaking. October, (137), 51-68.
I will learn to use mobile devices to tell a story visually
Month 6 – Visual Storytelling Techniques and Technology
Course Goal: Learn advanced camera techniques, visual composition and cinematography
Strategies for achieving goal
I will read “Cinematography” by Blaine Brown on EBSCOhost
I will research the Sony F65 camera and learn how to operate it
I will read “The Camera Assistant’s Manual on EBSCOhost
Month 7 – Film Production Thesis I: Pre-production
Course Goal: Begin planning the production of our class thesis film.
Strategies for achieving goal
I will learn to use Movie Magic Budgeting/Scheduling
I will read “Rebel Without a Crew” by Robert Rodriguez
I will read “The Fundamentals of Film-making” on EBSCOhost
Month 8 – Film Production Thesis II: Production
Course Goal: Practice all the concepts learned to produce a thesis film.
Strategies for achieving goal
I will communicate effectively with the rest of the crew to be as efficient as we can
I will lead the camera team in the filming of our project as Director of Photography
I will read “Grammar of the Shot” on EBSCOhost
Month 9 – Entertainment and Communication Law
Course Goal: Learn about financial, licensing and employment agreements used in the industry.
Strategies for achieving goal
I will research about guild agreements in particular the Cinematographer’s Guild
I will read the following article on EBSCOhost: WILLARD, C. (2013). Entertainment, Art & Sports Law. Florida Bar Journal, 87(6), 16-18.
I will meet with the instructor to ask about the distribution of my own side projects
Month 10 – Film Production Thesis III: Post-Production
Course Goal: Learn about post production processes and apply that knowledge to our thesis film
Strategies for achieving goal
I will watch tutorials for using AVID Media Composer on Lynda.com
I will ask to use one of the AVID editing labs outside of class time to work on the rough cut of my thesis project
I will read “The Healthy Edit: Creative Editing Techniques for Perfecting Your Movie” on EBSCOhost
Month 11 – Film Production Thesis IV: Film Assembly
Course Goal: Use advanced post production techniques for color correcting and sound design
Strategies for achieving goal
I will read “Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound” on EBSCOhost
I will learn how to use the AVID Artist Color Control Surface
I will watch tutorials on color correcting in AVID on Lynda.com
Month 12 – Business of Film
Course Goal: Learn how to effectively market our film through film festivals
Strategies for achieving goal
I will research various film festivals to enter our thesis film into

I will design packaging and other art to help sell my film
