Nathan Aspinall, conductor

Nathan Aspinall returns to the Jacksonville Symphony’s podium just in time for Christmas. JAN 10/11 Fri/Sat: 8pm

BEETHOVEN’S VIOLIN CONCERTOSCHREKER Chamber SymphonyBEETHOVEN Violin ConcertoSCHUMANN Symphony No. 1

Courtney Lewis, conductorStefan Jackiw, violin

Beethoven influenced the course of music history in nearly every genre, and the concerto is no exception. The New York Times praises phenom violinist Stefan Jackiw’s “remarkable purity of tone,” which he couples with the controlled intensity this concerto demands. Beethoven’s lineage shines in the late Romanticism of Schreker’s Chamber Symphony, and his fire is unmistakable in Schumann’s First Symphony.

JAN 31/FEB 1 Fri/Sat: 8pm

TCHAIKOVSKY’SSIXTH SYMPHONYProgram Includes:TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique”

Anu Tali, conductor

Tchaikovsky died just a week after the symphony’s premiere and the name “Pathétique” is certainly appropriate for the psychological drama it lays bare. Tchaikovsky himself called it, “…the best thing I ever composed.”

APR 24/25 Fri/Sat: 8pm

BRAHMS SYMPHONY NO. 2Program Includes:BRAHMS Symphony No. 2

Matthew Halls, conductor

The most cheerful of Brahms’ works is often called his “pastoral” in reference to Beethoven’s symphony of the same name. This symphony is full of warmth and overflowing with lush, joyful melodies.

MAY 15/16 Fri/Sat: 8pm

BEETHOVEN’SEMPEROR CONCERTOBEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor”SCHUBERT Symphony No. 9

Courtney Lewis, conductorDaniel Hsu, piano

Our celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday continues with his “Emperor” Piano Concerto. Classical FM calls it, “…the most accomplished of all piano concertos with a striking opening movement and glorious finale but it’s the beauty and serenity of the adagio which makes this Beethoven’s best.”

JUN 5/6 Fri/Sat: 8pm

MAHLER 1RAVEL La ValseADÈS TevotMAHLER Symphony No. 1, “Titan”

Courtney Lewis, conductor

Ravel’s La Valse elicits a broader range of interpretations than nearly any of the French composer’s other works. It may well be the deepest exploration of Romanticism by this otherwise Classical and Impressionist composer. The Symphony will reach the end of this mighty season’s voyage with the pinnacle of Beethoven’s lineage, Gustav Mahler and his “Titan” First Symphony. It’s one of the most spellbinding moments of symphonic inspiration in the 19th century: the opening of Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony.
