Pursue your degree in a cohort of scholars and professionals from private, independent and international schools. A cohort of 25 students will complete work in residence for two consecutive summer terms, each five weeks, and engage in field work during the two intervening semesters at their home schools. Excellent faculty, combining the talents of professors from the College of Education at UH, with the experience of practicing school educators from Hawai‘i’s finest independent schools, will join students in a community that invites intellectual stimulation within the construct of a professional learning community. A challenging curriculum that emphasizes private, independent school issues, cultural and multicultural awareness and diversity and the practice of leadership within the context of a school community. A wide variety of interactive teaching formats and methodologies designed to engage and challenge the experienced adult learner. Distance learning technologies will facilitate learning during off-site periods. Guest lecturers, informal discussion sessions and the atmosphere of collaboration augment formal instruction and produce lasting networks of professionals throughout the region. EDEF 610 - Foundations of Educational Theory Topics: An in-depth review of social, philosophical and historical views underlying various theories of education and their application in teaching and learning in independent schools.

EDEF 678 - Inquiry in Education Topics: Orientation to research; technology skills crucial to EDEF 649 Field Studies; brainstorming projects; review of the literature available related to project topics; reflecting on practical ideas that lend themselves to 649 projects.

Fall 2018/Spring 2019

EDEF 649 - Field Studies in Education FoundationsAfter admission and before attendance, students will be expected to think through, with the leadership of their schools, a project that would work at or be helpful to the school. During the first summer, the project will be refined. In the fall, students will research the literature germane to the project and begin to implement the project. In the spring, students will complete and then evaluate the success of the project. Past projects have included new curriculum thrusts and building school culture.

Program Cost The tuition for the Master’s Degree Program in Private School Leadership is $18,000. Tuition and other University fees will be invoiced through the University of Hawai‘i over the four terms of the program. Additional expenses include the application fee ($100), books, travel, and housing (if applicable).

Suggested Computer EquipmentDuring the intervening year between the two summer sessions, students interact through on-line technology tools with instructors and each other. To participate, students must have access to a computer with Internet access.
