Born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, 1916. He was a student of the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam before working as lithographer for the Dutch Colonial Army in the Dutch Indies prior to the Second World War. He moved to Bali in 1956 to engage in full time painting and became an Indonesian Citizen, produced as well as taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. He received the “Dharma Kusuma” art awards from the local government of Bali.

Gerard Pieter Adolfs was born on 2 January 1898 in Semarang, Central Java. He spent his youth in Java and received at home his first artistic inspirations. His father, Gerardus Cornelis Adolfs, was an architect and a versatile amateur (painter, photographer, piano and violin player as well as a pole vaulter). Adolfs studied architecture in Amsterdam. After graduating, he was drawn back to Java, were he designed houses in Yogyakarta, Solo and Surabaya. But soon he swapped the drawing pen for the dry-point, pencil and brush and from then on dedicated his whole life to painting. He was already well-known as a talented advertising illustrator, when in 1924 he was first introduced to the public of Yogyakarta as a painter, water-colourist and graphic artist.

Each year Adolfs travelled for a few months, leaving his family in Surabaya. He had studios in Florence, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Prag and (together with his Japanese friend Fujita) in Paris and exhibited his works of art internationally (Netherlands Indies, Japan, Singapore, USA, England, Holland, Sweden, Norway, France, Switzerland . . .)The main subjects of his work were scenes of Java, Bali, Japan and of North Africa (market sceneries, cock-fights, landscapes and townscapes) In 1940 - shortly before the occupation of Holland - Adolfs came back to Europe and settled in Amsterdam.

On 22 February 1944, during an exhibition at the Kunstzaal Pollmann, the largest part of Adolfs‘ paintings was destroyed by the bombardment of Nijmegen. But Adolfs kept on working. He wrote and illustrated a book about his memories of Surabaya and exhibited in a lot of well-known galleries. He lived mostly in Amsterdam - interrupted by longer stays in Scandinavia, France, Spain, Italy and North Africa.In 1967 he retired to a small village in South-Holland. On 1 February 1968, G.P. Adolfs died in s’Hertogenbosch - Holland.

Born in 1945 in Singapore, a self-taught observer, traveler and passionate learner- Ong Kim Seng has climbed the ranks of formal appreciation to claim his title as one of the most celebrated water colorists. He is considered as one of Singapore’s most prominent artistic icons. The artist has shown mastery over the capture of light, often basking his creations in the warmth of sunlight, expertly using positive space and shadows to create stunningly realistic depictions of silhouettes and representation.

Ong Kim Seng has exhibited worldwide and won a multitude of awards, including six awards from the American Watercolor Society, and the coveted Cultural Medallion for visual arts by the Ministry Of Information and the Arts, Singapore. The artist was also President of the Singapore Watercolor Society from 1991 to 2001 when he became Honorary President. Ong’s works have graced the collections of a number of museums and art galleries as well as the residences of foreign dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth II of England and Kofi Annan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations. His works are also exhibited in foreign missions and embassies of the Republic of Singapore.

Ong is a self-taught artist, who never had any formal art training. As a realist painter, his works focus on inanimate objects, architectural form, masonry, foliage and landscape. His style is “naturalist cum impressionistic”, which is “a combination of post-impressionist colour and the outlook of the American realist masters”.

Born in Rotterdam, 20 April 1889. He came to Indonesia ca. 1918 as a civil servant to survey the country. In this function he traveled all over the archipelago. The artist participated in several group exhibitions in Jakarta, Medan and Surabaya between 1918 and1939. He returned to the Netherlands in 1946, where he settled in Zeist. Painter, Illustrator and draughtsman of harbor scenes, City views, and landscapes, in an accurate impressionistic style.He died in Zeist, the Netherlands, February 3, 1966.

Born in Palembang, South Sumatra, 1904. He was a self-taught painter whose works were mostly Indonesian landscape. He also produced paintings of Asian panorama. He was a painter, watercolorist, and draughtsman in the style reminiscent of the late of GP. Adolfs. He once lived in Jakarta for a long time then settled in The Hague until he died in 1976.

Chen Wen HsiBorn in Baigong, Caozhu, 1906. Chen Wen Hsi studied art at the Hsin Hwa Art Academy in Shanghai. He became a lecturer at the Nangyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. His paintings were strongly influenced by Chan (Zen) and the unorthodox Qing School of Yangzhou. He actively participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which also incidentally promote Singapore. Among the many awards he had received are the Public Service Star in 1964, a Gold Medal by the National Museum of History, Taiwan in 1980, the first recipient of the ASEAN Cultural and Communication Award for outstanding artists in 1987 and received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore.

Chen Wen Hsi is Singapore’s foremost painter that combines Chinese and Western techniques in his semi abstract work. Chen Wen-hsi is renowned for his skill in painting animal themes. Chicken, gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. Wen Hsi’s constant eagerness to strike for something new led him to learn finger painting – a technique that dates from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken stroke on paper. He developed his skill in finger painting, ink-and-brush, oil, sketches, abstracts and semi-abstract techniques. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, gibbons, egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant. Besides squirrels and egrets, gibbons are the series of most representative of Chen’s style. That creates a dynamic, vigorous and rhythmic experience.

Born in Pariaman, West Sumatra, October 3, 1928. He studied painting under Affandi and Sudjojono. He help established the Institut Kesenian Jakarta (IKJ, Jakarta Arts Institute) where he became a lecturer. In 1979 – 1992 he was a member of Dewan Kesenian Jakarta (Jakarta Art Committee). He has participated in exhibitions of the Festival of Indonesia (USA, 1990 – 1992), the Gate Foundation (Amsterdam, Holland, 1993) and several places in Indonesia. He left his figurative paintings to fully paint in abstract style until his deceased in April 13, 1994.

Born in Yogyakarta, 1957. From 1974 – 1975, he studied art at Lembaga Pendidikan Kesenian Jakarta. Besides sculptor, Ibnu also creates paintings in his distinctive character. He actively participated in several group exhibitions since 1974 until 2008. Since 1988, he had performed his solo exhibition at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Jakarta until 2012. He joint several group painting exhibition in Jakarta at Institute Kesenian Jakarta, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Balai Budaya, and Galeri Nasional (1974 – 2013). Until present his works have been in the collection of art collectors in Jakarta, other big cities in Indonesia, as well as abroad.

Mangu Putra’s works arise from intense contact with the world as a conscious expression of his main creative orientation. Representations of natural phenomena, along with the inner pulse of life, form the main stream of his search. The natural world, such as mountains and coasts, are depicted as identifiable objects.

Mangu’s magnificent landscapes and volcanoes are depicted as majestic, timeless and all powerful, yet quietly dormant. They are breathtaking, yet set within an atmosphere of silent intimidating strength. It is this aspect of his work that sets Mangu apart from his predecessors. Often the scenes are dotted with Balinese villagers dressed in traditional robes for worship, perhaps reminiscent of Chinese philosopher painter’s work depicting the omnipotence of nature. Here, Mangu’s concern are not ritual ceremonies but rather the traditional culture of worship for the land; the land that scared and fundamental to our existence.

Pura Batur is the second most important temple in Bali, after Pura Besakih. Built in 1926, the temple is dedicated to Dewi Danu, goddess of lakes and rivers. Originally, Pura Batur and the village of Batur were located down in the caldera at the foot of Mount Batur, an active volcano. A violent eruption in 1926 destroyed both the village and the temple, except for the most important shrine, an 11-tiered meru dedicated to Dewi Danu. The villagers moved to the highest and oldest rim of the caldera, where they rebuilt their village and the temple.

Rusli was born in Medan, North Sumatra, 1912. He studied at the Kala Bhawana Santiniketan University of Rabindranath Tagore, India from 1932 to 1938, and he taught in 1951 at Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. He joined Seniman Muda Indonesia (Indonesian Young Artists) and helped established the Seni Rupa Masyarakat (Art for People Association). In 1955 he performed his solo exhibition at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. His works were exhibited at the Biennale exhibition II in Sao Paolo, Brazil (1953) and held solo exhibition at Palazzo Brancaccio, Rome, Italy (1954 – 1956). He passed away in Jakarta on 11 May 2005.

Lee Man FongLee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-Fong style”.

The present lot is a female figure posing in nude style, very rare objects and very special as one of his best work produced in the period. Besides his great intense in observing the nature especially animal such as gold fish and doves, women were Lee’s most cherished subject. His figures reflect a wealth of thought and inner content. His portraits excel equally in form and expression, vitality and faithfulness, and rank above works. Lee Man Fong’s portraits are remarkable life-like, fresh and moving and at the same time full of artistic individuality. This resulted from a strict awareness of values and rigorous selectivity.

Zaf Chevallier born in Jakarta, 10 February 1959. He is a multi talented artist, graphic designer, and fashion and interior designer whose works are the results of the different cultures which he has experienced. Born in Indonesia, Zef moved to the Netherlands in 1977 where he spent 26 years working, studying, and absorbing the Dutch culture. Zef worked for 11 years before deciding to further his education and enrolled in the Leiden Educational Institution (LOI), Leiden, Netherlands in Interior Art Design and Architecture. During his education, Zef worked on his own art design and oil paintings, and his art was exhibited in art galleries in Roosendaal, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam from 1991 to 1995. Exposed to different cultures and coming from Indonesia, who has been colonized by different cultures as the Portuguese, Japanese, and Dutch, Zef’s paints his philosophy of the future and how a cohesive world should be. In Zef’s words, “The new world that is our destination no matter if we are still alive or dead. The message for our future lies in peace, happiness, freedom, and love. No human power, no religion, no politics, no sadness, no illness, no wars, and everybody in the new world living in equal societies, respect, and are honest to one another”.

Born in Klungkung, Bali, April 15, 1944. He graduated from the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta where he is currently a lecturer in art. He began his career as painter of models and portraits. Since 1967, active performing solo exhibitions, like in British Embassy, Jakarta (1967), Arcade Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (1971), Blance Gallery, San Francisco (1991), Blance Gallery, Osaka (1982), 21 Gallery, Singapore (1995), Opera-Gallery, Paris (1996), and Hamburgische Landesbank, Hamburg (1998). He also participates in joint-exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas. He received awards from the Pratisara Affandi Adikarya (1976), in the Biennial Indonesian Art Exhibitions (1878 & 1980) and the Lempad Prize (1980). His works are in collection by local and abroad collectors.

Born in Java, 1884. He was a self-taught artist, lived and worked in Indonesia. He intensely involved in the Union of Dutch Indies Art Circles from the beginning of 20th century. He painted a great deal of Indonesian nature with tremendous command of light and shade. In 1920 he left to settle in The Hague but still continue to paint Indonesian subject. His work was included in the International Colonial exhibition in Paris (1931) but unfortunately damaged by fire. Today, his works are in the collection of several Dutch museums.

Ju Ping is the artistic name of Seng Chye who was born in the pictureque province of Fukien, China in 1908. He received his early education from Pai Yuen Secondary School in China but later transferred to Chung Ling High School, Penang. He later studies at Singapore Nanyang Academy of Arts and graduated with the first batch of Nanyang artists in 1940. Later, he returned to Penang to work as managing director of his father’s company “Sin Guan Tai Co,” dealing with import-export of rattan and other products.

However, painting was his passion and in between business dealings, he would indulge in art. Most of his leisure hours were spent on painting and he gave free tuition to enthusiastic young artists and even provided financial assistance to the poor students to buy art materials. He led a humble life and was highly respected by his fellow artists.

He was a founder member of the Penang Chinese Art Club in 1936. He also gave art tuition at many high schools in Penang, including Chung Ling High School, Union High School,Li Tek School and Han Chiang High School. In addition, he was also very active in local drama societies as a make-up artist.

He majored in oil and watercolour paintings, with realistic and impressionistic influences. He was especially good at sketching, which was the result of painstaking observation of nature and people. He was known to have climbed up other people’s rooftops to paint scenery and every evening, he walked to the beach for inspiration. His devotion to art, his wide choice of subject matters, sophisticated compositions and techniques gained him a reputation among fellow artist for successfully combining versatility, style and technical excellence.

Tan Choh TeeTan Choh Tee (b. 1942, Guangdong, China) is a prominent artist known for his impressionist-style oil paintings depicting still life as well as landscapes from a bygone era in Singapore’s history. For his contributions to the local arts scene, Tan was awarded the Cultural Medallion for Visual Arts in 2006. . In 1958, he enrolled himself into the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and studied under the Nanyang Style artists such as Cheong Soo Pieng, Georgette Chen, Liu Kang and Chen Wen Hsi.

Tan is known for his series of oil paintings of Chinatown. His other favourite themes are old buildings and fast disappearing landscapes of urban Singapore.

The mid-1980s marked an end to this phase in Tan’s artistic direction. He began to paint still life and landscapes he saw on his travels such as fishing villages in South Thailand, the River Seine in Paris and Huangshan in China. Tan is known for his series of oil paintings of Chinatown. His other favourite themes are old buildings and fast disappearing landscapes of urban Singapore.

Majoring in Western oil painting while he was in NAFA, Tan went on to study Chinese brush painting under pioneering artist Chen Wen Hsi. Between the years 1962 to 1970, Tan had concentrated on Chinese ink painting. However, after 1970, Tan decided to focus on oil painting instead as it appealed to him and he found the medium challenging and satisfying.

Deeply influenced by the Impressionists, Tan believes that art must flow out of the artist’s personal experiences. Thus, Tan always paints on location and not from photographs. He only paints still life indoors in a studio on rainy days.

Teo was hailed as the “Matisse of the East” by the Tatler (Singapore) magazine for his impressionist-style paintings. Over the years, Tan has also developed a distinctive personal style away from the Impressionists by using Chinese ink brush techniques in his oil paintings.Tan’s works are collected by the National Museum of Singapore, the National Museum of Negara Brunei Darus-salam and several other institutions, corporate organizations and private collectors.

He was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He has shown great artistic talent since young. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before engaged in full time painting in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits as well as acknowledgement. He was officially become a presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter.

Born in Indramayu, West Java, 21 February 1972. He was raised in the family of fisherman in northern sea of Java (pantura). His painting career starts when he travelled to Bali in 1992. In Bali, he learnt painting under maestro painter Affandi and Sudarso. During he stay in Bali he managed to sell his works to art collectors and galleries which then made him decide to fully concentrate his passion in painting. In 1996, Dirot decide to paint using his own distinctive characteristics. About 3 years he did some experiment works until he finally found his own style. Tong Chin Sye is an avid traveller who sketches and paints on location. He is inspired by architectural and cultural subject matters. Tong’s painting technique is distinctive as his oils and watercolours naturally blend in the beauty of Chinese Calligraphy. Painting the rapidly changing cityscapes and street scenes of Singapore continues to be his passion.

Born in Singapore in 1939, Tong Chin Sye is a full-time artist and graduated from the now defunct Singapore Academy of Fine Arts in 1960. He has taught Western Art on a part-time basis at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. A representative 2nd generation artist, he is well known for his versatility and has trained in both Western and Chinese art, oils, watercolour, acrylic, Chinese ink and calligraphy.In 1987, Tong won first prize in the PSA Art Competition held in Singapore. He also won the Tan Tsze Chor Art Award in 1992. He was invited in 1998 to represent Singapore at the Flemish Watercolour Days in Zaventum, Europe. Lee Man Fong is famous painter who captures gold fishes in magnificent way. Here, light is of prime importance and the subjects are consistently bathed in a luminous glow as presented in this lot. Some gold fishes are swimming freely in the space of an aquarium, still with his essential element by using the light, reflecting the sun’s radiance, Lee success to bring all the goldfishes as a depiction of calmness. Chen Wen HsiA prolific painter who worked in a range of styles, Chen Wen Hsi won acclaim for combining Western art with Chinese brush strokes in his paintings. He was also an influential art teacher at The Chinese High School and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) for many years.

From a young age, Chen was interested in the small animals that he saw in his village and around his home. For example, he enjoyed watching sparrows in the courtyard as well as the chickens, ducks and geese reared by his family. Contact with these small animals at an early age instilled in him a great love for pets and animals. To observe the characteristics and movements of the animals he painted, Chen bought and reared gibbons, fish, birds, squirrels, egrets and peacocks. He was said to have a “miniature zoo” in his backyard.

Chen painted both Western and Chinese paintings. His Western-style works in the early 1950s were realistic depictions infused with post-impressionistic and expressionistic elements. Chen’s Western painting style subsequently evolved, moving from simplified forms and strong colours to cubism, and later abstraction. Besides using oil paints for his Western artworks, Chen also experimented with acrylic and viscous paints as well as sand on canvas.

Chen was also highly skilled at finger-painting. He first learnt this skill from his teacher Pan Tianshou and his artist-friend Fu Luofei in Shanghai. Over time, Chen also experimented and developed his own style, and often demonstrated his finger-painting skill to various audiences, including the king of Thailand.

Internationally celebrated Painter and Sculptor, Teguh Ostenrik holds a Master Degree in Fine Arts Hochschule der Kuenste, West Berlin , Germany. Recently , he initiated ARTificial Reef Park Project which was launched in Lombok, Indonesia, a project to restore the nature through art. Using biorocks technology, Ostenrik provides his underwater sculptures as media for the coral to grow and providing a better marine ecosystem. Ostenrik’s 24 years work of art has been documented in Transcending Time,a full coloured 250 pages book, wrote by Art Historian Barbara Asboth. He was a guest lecturer in the Beijing Central Academy of Art in 2006. For three consecutive years (2006-2008) Teguh is a jury member of China Asean Youth Art Creativity Contest in Nanning – China, a drawing competition with 3000 participants. In 2013, he represented Indonesia to commemorate 10th Anniversary of China-Asean Expo.

“The Master” is a very interesting interpretation of Jesus of Nazareth by the award-winning painter Antonio Maria Blanco. Blanco is widely known for painting Balinese women as his subject matter for his artworks. However, “The Master” is clearly not one of that. Blanco tried to depict the simple idea of how Jesus of Nazareth might look like in this painting. He was intrigued by the notion that Jesus of Nazareth was conceived divinely by two regular Jews, Joseph and Maria. He then portrayed this phenomenal figure as a bearded man looking upwards toward the heaven.“For my concept of Jesus is that of a youthful clean-shaven face...and looking askance as though his lips had just uttered,” explained the painter about his depiction.Blanco also has another title for this painting: “The Man of Sorrows”. He implied that the subject matter felt sorrows for those who were in the darkness.This painting is arguably the only painting of Jesus of Nazareth by Blanco available. Blanco put a lot of thoughts in this work that he also wrote a poem based on the subject matter.

Feng Zhengjie is best known for his Portrait of China series in which large portraits of red and turquoise palette of Chinese fashion models are painted, reminiscent of Andy Warhol. Feng’s take on futuristic pop are influenced by promotional imagery where the models are given an electrified aura and painted with exotic colours with vacant diverging eyes, a signature of Feng, to exude aesthetic glamour.

Feng Zhengjie graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts where he received a BFA in Fine Arts Education in 1992 and Masters in Oil Painting in 1995. Feng is a Chinese contemporary artist who has participated in many international exhibitions including Dialogue With Asia, Olso, Norway; 2002 Korea Contemporary Art Festival, Seoul, South Korea, Chian Femmes de Chine, Paris France; Primary Colours, Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; and New Perspectives in Chinese Painting, Milan, Italy.

俸正杰,四川安岳县人。中国著名现代画家、油画 艺术教育家。中专就读于安岳师范学校(现安岳实验中学)。本科毕业于四川美术学院美术教育系,获学士学位。1995毕业于四川美术学院油画系,获硕士学位。现为北京教育学院美术系副教授。俸正杰一直十分关注流行时尚对社会表象和人的内心的影响,民间年画与时尚流行色彩巧妙转换形成了俸正杰作品独特的艳丽浮华的画面风格,令人联想起普普艺术大师安迪沃荷的作品风格。俸正杰的作品《中国》系列和《中国肖像》系列及其类似的作品,着重于女性脸部肖像大特写。这些作品的核心在于使观赏者感到无所适从。非个性化的眼睛、超刺激的红嘴唇、绿红蓝的头及画中蕴含着有点现代过头的时尚感——从这些东西中很容易看出作者对现代的 消费社会化、大众社会化状况的批判观点。从 俸正杰的作品评断,画家不是在模仿现实,实际上,画家越来越肯定的是自己对现实的建设和创造,即是说,制造没有存在过的假像成为今天工作的内容。正是层出不穷的假像构成了这个世界的变化,而正是由假像构成的变化,使我们认识到了今天与过去的不同,认识到了问题的精彩。

WidayatWidayat was born in Kutoarjo (Central Java, 1919) in the colonial era. After some military training, he took the apprentice study at the Indonesia Art Academy Yogyakarta under painters Hendra Gunawan, Sudarso, Trubus, and Kusnadi. Then Widayat met a Bandung Painter, Kartono Yudhokusumo from whom he got direct influence of decorative style in painting. Widayat’s works show an immense variety of stories about nature, myth, and ritual. They are rich in content, texture, and technique. Widayat’s preference for the simplification and distortion of natural forms had a profound influence on many Indonesian artists. His magic decorative style is a personal visual language mostly derived from folk motifs. He focuses on inner structure rather that outward appearance.

The present lot is an early work of Widayat with very rare objects. It features the village of Kintamani sits on the rim of the great volcanic caldera of mount Gunung Batur. The climate is cold, with thick clouds rolling in almost daily in the late afternoon. The colors in this painting reflect the misty atmosphere in addition to the bleakness of the landscape with blackened lava flows from eruptions of the active volcano.

Dullah was born in Solo, 1919. He studied painting under Affandi and Sudjojono but has his own distinctive style of naturalism. He was well known for his landscape and portraits paintings. He was one of the founders of HBS – Surakarta Cultural Community (1950). In 1956, he edited book of former Presiden Soekarno’s Private Collection of Indonesian Art (volume I & II). Since the early days of the independence, Dullah was very close to Soekarno, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia and was appointed by Soekarno to care for the President’s private art collection and as curator of the state painting collections. At age 70, Dullah built his museum, now a cultural landmark, as his dedication to a love of the arts over a creative lifetime. He has had numerous art exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas and in 1988 his work was included in the Art of Bali exhibition held at the East West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Now, his works been kept in Dullah Museum in Solo. He died in 1996.

S. Sudjojono Sindudarsono Sudjojono was born in Kisaran North Sumatra, on December 14, 1913. He studied painting from Mas Pringadi and a Japanese painter, Chiyoyi Yazaki. In 1937 he founded the Persagi Indonesian Artists Association in Jakarta. In 1970 he was awarded recognition in art by the Indonesian government. His works have been exhibited in the Netherlands and in the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan (1980). Local exhibitions have been held in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Bandung. He died in Jakarta (1986).

After getting divorced from their respective spouses, Rose and Sudjojono married in 1959. They decided to live in the Pasar Minggu area, which at the time still considered the outskirts of Jakarta, and started building their house, room by room. Sudjojono’s family at the time consisted of Rose and three children – Sri, Sara, Amirul Gustav and Sri Rosewiaty – from her first marriage. Rose was also expecting their own first child, for whom they had prepared the name Pandanwangi. In 1959, they had discussed giving their child a name that would signify an aroma that was pleasant as a rose, and decided that the aroma of pandanus (Pandanusamaryllifolius) would be suitable.

In painting featuring scenes of daily life, Sudjojono family became his main subject matter. While Rose continued to be the artist’s main inspiration, he often used her daughter as a model of his paintings. Some examples include painting of the present lot “Pandanwangi”. As per normal with restless children, the hours of sitting in for Pak Djon would take a toll on them. Judging from some of the glum faces, we can certainly see who were the reluctant participants amongst his daughters.

He was born on 10 January 1896 in his father’s coconut estate in Kuching, Sarawak with the original name of Yen Lang. He went to Tai-Pu in the Kwangtung province of China in 1901 for formal education in the proper use of brush and calligraphy, He returned to Kuching in 1910. The experience of watching a Japanese artist painting with watercolours left an unforgettable impression on him.

Mun Sen’s forte was landscape in watercolour. He did make frequent sallies into oil and Chinese traditional brush painting with success, but it was in the watercolour medium that he excelled. His uncomplicated landscapes were executed in fluid, full-blood washes. His work reflected conscious attempts to incorporate the Chinese artistic spirit. The influence of Chinese art resulted in his compositions being more airy and generalised in treatment, revealing a concern for linear properties and surface design. He was not interested in providing details or factual depiction of the landscape he observed. He controlled the watercolour and allowed transluscency and fluidity to render the rhythms.

The international contemporary art trend towards expressionism finally caught up with him in 1949 and the resultant heady ferment produced a series of abstract watercolours with surrealist undertone. In 1956, he had the first of several strokes and despite his physical infirmity, struggled on to paint. However, continued illness and financial hardship led to profound despair eventually. He died on September 29th 1962.

Zhang Daqian was one of the most internationally renowned Chinese artists of the 20th century. Born into a literally family in Sichuan Province, Zhang learned to draw at the age of 10, and at 12, he was already known for his depictions of flowers and birds. In 1919, after a 2 year spell in Kyoto, Japan with his brother Zhang Shanzi to study textile dyeing, Zhang returned to Shanghai to learn Chinese traditional painting from two famous calligrapher and painters, Zeng Xi and Li Ruiqing. Zhang was meticulous in studying the styles of old masters, emulating the Ming-Qing styles of Shi Tao and Bada Shanren, as Zhang believed that it is of vital importance to learn from tradition.

In the late 1920’s Zhang moved to Beijing where he collaborated with fellow artist Pu Xinyu. Their collaborative efforts in the 1930’s earned them a reputation as “South Zhang and North Pu” as the coming together of the two styles. In the 1940’s Zhang led a group of artist in copying the Buddhist wall paintings in the Magao and Yulin caves. There, Zhang copied 276 frescoes from the Bei Wei Period, Sui Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, and Five Dynasties where 183 of his copies are preserved at the Sichuan Provincial Museum. In 1956, Zhang met Pablo Picasso in France and the event was highly publicized as the meeting between the artistic cultures of the East and West.

Zhang Daqian was a well-rounded painter who was versatile in many techniques and styles of Chinese painting like gongbi, free sketches, ink-and- wash, and splash colouring. Zhang had a special fondness for the lotus where the humble lotus plant became a staple of many of his artistic creations. Zhang was inspired by Shi Tao for his paintings of flowers where heavy ink is used to outline the petal tips after painting the flower petals with light ink, making the lotus look more lively and spirited. This technique of outlining plants coupled with Zhang’s freehand strokes gives this painting a fresh and realistic representation of the lotus.

Zhang Daqian 张大千乃二十世纪最著名的中国画家之一,于1899年生于四川省一个书香世家,于10岁的稚龄已开始习画并展露绘画天份,到了12岁那年,已以擅长画花鸟闻名。1917年,张大千赴日本京都学习染织,其二哥张善子也在日本,两年后,张大千回到上海学习书法及国画,师从曾熙、李瑞清。他认为,学习与临摹古代大家对于传承中国画传统至关重要,并醉心于钻研石涛和八大山人等的绘画风格。

不久后,张大千与张善子创立“大风堂派”,是二十世纪中国画坛最具传奇色彩的泼墨画工。特别在山水画方面卓有成就。张大千后旅居海外,画风工写结合,重彩、水墨融为一体,尤其是泼墨与泼彩,开创了新的艺术风格,因其诗、书、画与齐白石、溥心畲齐名,故又并称为“南张北齐”和“南张北溥”。张大千也与黄君璧、溥心畲以“渡海三家”齐名。张大千二十多岁便蓄著一把大胡子,成为他日后的特有标志。

1940年,张大千赴敦煌临摹历代壁画两年七个月,共摹276幅,并为莫高窟壁画重新编号。1943年,出版《大风堂临摹敦煌壁画》。1956年,张大千在法国与毕加索会面,获传媒大事报道,认为是东方与西方绘画艺术大师文化交流之一大盛事。

张大千是二十世纪对中国画坛影响巨大,又最为传奇的国画大师,无论是绘画、书法、篆刻、诗词都无所不通,尤其是开创泼墨与泼彩,发展了中国画新的艺术风格。无论山水、人物、花鸟都在中国绘画历史上写下了浓重一笔,他是中国画史上少见的全方位画家。

《风荷图》作于1948年,属于中期的作品,张大千在研习古人的过程中,又大胆试验,并拓展了文人花卉固有样式的努力,可从画中看出来。张大千的荷花,构图十分简洁,荷花皆向左倾斜,构成对角线,荷叶与花相互穿插,乱中有序。疏密有致,奇巧有趣,格调清新典雅。白描的荷花轮廓清晰与大片水墨绘成的荷叶对比衬托,益是显得脱俗动人,仿佛荷叶在风中微微自在飘摇,而荷叶疏影中高雅洁白的荷花已悄然绽放,孕育着灵动鲜活的生命。那种超凡脱俗、生机盎然、蒸蒸日上的美丽与意蕴,令人浮想联翩,回味无穷。大师纯熟的功底与老辣的技法,于浑朴中见清秀,于洒脱中含缜密,于酣畅中寓意蕴,令人称道折服。

Basoeki Abdullah Born in Solo, January 27, 1915, he is the second son of Abdullah Soerjosoebroto, a prominent landscape painter. He studied at the Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, the Netherlands. His work includes painting of the Queen of Netherlands, King of Thailand, President of Philippines, Sultan of Brunei and many other important figures. He is best known as a portrait painter as well as landscapes, fauna, flora and other themes. His works have been exhibited in various European countries, South East Asia and Indonesia.

The present lot feature one of Basoeki’s fauna themes. This painting depicts the world of the doves as peaceful and calm, but at the same time dynamic. The wonderful painting of doves in pairs symbolize a good match, which may be further extended to mean “peaceful coexistence” as to in Chinese philosophy.

Abdul AzizAbdul Aziz was born in Purwokerto, Central Java, and showed precocious artistic talent from childhood. His first Diploma was in Social Sciences from Gajah Mada University, after which he studied Art at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. Due to his exceptional talent he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome in 1958, where he was awarded two Diplomas, in Painting and in Decoration. On his return to Indonesia in 1965 he lectured in Fine Art at Udayana University and established his studio in Ubud Bali.

Abdul Aziz is now regarded as one of Indonesia’s greatest artists of the 20th Century. Originally from Central Java but a resident of Bali for the last part of his life, Aziz was widely known and highly sought after for his realistic paintings of village scenes. Aziz’s paintings include beautiful women, depicted singly or in groups, and portraits both painted and sculpted. Yet his oeuvre stands out as more of an individual contribution to Indonesian art history than most, belonging in a class with artists who are continuously referred to as the ‘greats’: those individual artists that Western-trained or influenced art writers found to be the most original and innovative of their time.

Aziz came to learn nude painting during his study in in Italy, where he took the life-drawing classes in the Euro-American sense. As an art student in Rome he was faced with one naked model after the other, most of them women. In Aziz nude paintings, there is nothing particularly sensual about the image. The painting looks like a study of naked human being, who happens to be female, by an artist who is exploring unusual angles and surface-toners rather than painting something which excites his subliminal or conscious desires. He presented the woman as a human being of the female species who has a lovely, beauty, natural thing of the human body.

Tay Bak Koi (b. 1939, Singapore - d. 2005, Singapore) was an artist renowned for his portrayals of fishing villages, kampung scenes and urban landscapes. He specialised in oil and watercolour and his works have been exhibited extensively in Singapore and various other countries, including Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, Germany and the United States. His style tended toward a blend of realism and fantasy, and he was known for his recurring stylised imagery of the buffalo. In 1970, he was commissioned to produce 300 works for the Hilton Hotel in Singapore.

Born in Singapore in the 1950s, Teng’s works are heavily influenced by various cultural exchanges in Southeast Asia. His work uses symbols of adjacent culture and religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism and even Balinese mythology.

Unusual compositional elements accentuate the desired aesthetic. For example, a vase barely fits into the top of a painting in order to fully show the traditional cloth that lies underneath. Objects appear to defy gravity. The focus in his paintings thus turns towards structure and colour.

Born in 1906, Guangdong (China). Wen Hsi was an artist, an academician and a gallerist. He studied art at the Shanghai College of Art in 1928. Wen Hsi settled down in Singapore at 1948 and became an art teacher at The Chinese High School and taught there from 1949 to 1968, concurrently teaching art at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1951 to 1959. As a passionate art educator he had greatly influenced many of Singapore’s early Chinese artists. Wen Hsi was a great observant of nature. Almost everything can be the master’s inspiration to create exciting work namely, landscapes, human figures and animals.

Chen's great interest in observing his surroundings were found in depicting the nature and animal objects. He produced landscapes, figures, birds and animals, still life studies and abstract compositions. Chen was especially adept at drawing egrets and monkeys. Among all the animal paintings by him, Chen's gibbon paintings stand out, as they were noted by Chen's attention to detail and sensitive rendering of the beautiful creatures. His first inspi-ration from painting gibbons came from a reproduction of a gibbon painting that formed the right triptych of the famous painting, White Robed Guanyin, Crane and Gibbon by the 13th century Southern Song Dynasty Chinese artist Mu Xi. Awed by its lifelike quality, he was convinced with Mu Xi's great skill in close observation of the gibbons. So day and night, Chen studied Mu Xi's print and emulated the painting. Chen had never seen a gib-bon when he was in China, and as a result he did not realize that gibbons, unlike monkeys, had no tails. It was only much later in the late-1940s, that a foreigner pointed out his error in his painting, and corrected him. Later on he continued to study the creature's postures and its characteristics, by rearing it in his home garden. Chen Wen Hsi Chinese color on paper illustrates a dimension of great complexity and freshness of Chen’s ink and brush.

Born in Pariaman, West Sumatra on March 17, 1926. He first began painting under painter Wakidi and later continued under S. Sudjojono and Basoeki Abdullah. In 1940, Zaini went to Jakarta and moved to Yogyakarta in 1945 where he established together with Affandi the “Pelukis Rakyat” (Community’s Artists). Not more than a year, he moved to Madiun, East Java and established the Young Indonesian Artists, together with S. Sudjojono and Trisno Soemardjo. He returned to Jakarta in 1946. Zaini died on September 25,1977. Until the end of his life, he was a member of the Jakarta Art Council.

AffandiTower of the Sun by Affandi was made based on the popular symbol of Expo ‘70 Commemorative park in Osaka, Japan. Expo ‘70 was Asia’s first world’s fair that reflected Japan’s resurgent culture after World War II. The Tower of the Sun itself was built as a part of the theme pavilion. Later on, the pavilion that consisted of three levels, had the Basement Level buried and the Grand Roof removed after Expo ‘70. The only thing that remains is the Tower of The Sun in the Expo’70 Commemorative Park as a symbol to commemorate the event. Visitors at that time strongly felt the theme of Expo ‘70: “Progress and Harmony For Mankind”.The backstory of the Tower of the Sun is based on the largest ethnic religion of the people in Japan: Shinto. Shintoists believe that the Emperors of Japan are considered to be direct descendant of the sun goddess, Amaterasu. According to Japanese mythology, Amaterasu is not only seen as the goddess of the sun, but also of the universe.Affandi is known to paint as a medium of expressing his feelings more than describing an object. From his perspective, the Tower of the Sun is truly something different, something that he has not experienced before. The painting is nothing like the usual Affandi paintings with the signature crisscross lines painted repeatedly to create objects. It is certainly not because Affandi was in his development crisis while painting this artwork. Affandi genuinely expressed his feelings of amazement and admiration to a view that he has not seen before in his life: the progress and harmony for mankind beautifully captured in Expo ‘70.In addition to the Tower of The Sun itself, on the right side of the painting, Affandi painted his own version of Koinobori, also known as “carp streamer”. Koinobori is known as a symbol for Children’s Day in Japan.

The Tower of The Sun is such a popular and influential symbol that Google created a Google Doodle (temporary alteration of their logo on Google’s homepage) to commemorate the event.

Internationally celebrated Painter and Sculptor, Teguh Ostenrik holds a Master Degree in Fine Arts Hochschule der Kuenste, West Berlin , Germany. His art works and commissioned projects are collected by many private collectors, museums, international institutions and major corporations. He was a guest lecturer in the Beijing Central Academy of Art in 2006. For three consecutive years (2006-2008) Teguh is a jury member of China Asean Youth Art Creativity Contest in Nanning – China, a drawing competition with 3000 participants. Born in Bandung, 1918. He taught at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta in 1957. He took part in founding the Front Seniman (Artists Front) in Bandung, and Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists) in Yogyakarta. He also established the art club Pusaka Sunda together with Barli, Obon and some other friends. He is undoubtedly one of the Indonesia’s greatest pioneers of modern art and was considered to be one of the best and most versatile painters in Indonesia. He died in Bali 1983.

Hendra Gunawan created paintings conveying his great feelings and deepest emotions for his country and people. He inspired his paintings with sympathy, compassion, and affection about common people. Hendra’s stylistic figures and landscapes are perhaps influenced by his deep knowledge of rich signs and symbols of Javanese culture. Java’s monumental landscapes illustrated in decorative approach of color are also relates to the deeper level of traditional artistic expression in Indonesia.

Hendra’s people are never passive victims of their faith; they are always depicted as active subjects. Many of his paintings depict the lives of fish seller, fruit seller, and also chicken seller. The present lot was one of the Hendra’s paintings that described the theme of the common people’s daily life. He explored their activity, capturing them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style. The deepest emotion about the struggle of common people’s life, made Hendra keep presenting people in this landscape painting even in small and tiny form. He used the natural objects such as huge tree, sandy beach and blue sea as background to his main subject, like illustrated in the present lot.

Adrien Jean Le Mayeur De Merpres

Born in Brussels (Belgium), on 9 February 1880, in the nobility and linked with the Belgium royal family, he was the son of a painter. Adrien was very keen on becoming a painter himself, but his father insisted that he should complete his studies first. He graduated as a civil engineer (architect), but soon after devoted himself to painting. Le Mayeur’s works were executed with free-flowing and bold, strong strokes, in bright and gay colours. His works, be they sketches done in light colours or bright-coloured oil paints, showed that they were inspired by the brilliant and clear tropical sunlight. His subjects of paintings are Belgian Landscapes, Scenes of Asia and Africa, Balinese Genre, Figures and Nudes. He married with the famous Legong Dancer, Ni Nyoman Pollok, who was his best-known model and settled in Bali in 1932. His works shows effective use of light and shadow in bright colors. He donated his house and his studio in Sanur, Bali, to the Indonesian Government which is now known the Le Mayeur Museum.

Born in Zhangwu, China, 1 February 1939. He studied painting at the Lu Xun Academy of Arts, Department of oil Painting (1959 - 1964). Srihadi SoedarsonoSince 1950s, Srihadi had produced dancing themes as his favorite objects. Among the dancing object comes from a variety of Balinese dances such as Legong, Pendet, Tambulilingan, Kenyar, Janger, Baris, Barong, Mask Dance, etc, and also the dance from Javanese like Bedoyo Ketawang. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning.

The dance is one of Srihadi’s favorite themes. In his paintings of dancers he continues to paint female dancers in the same upright pose that has used in the past. His dance work consist of series of dancers, even so, for Srihadi, each dance has it own particular mood, the gist of which he attempts to capture in his painting. At the same time, dance also offers a panorama of human life in general: it shows the dynamic union between the everyday world of material reality and the world beyond perception, the realm of the material.

The merging of spiritual and physical control obtained in dance obviously appeals to the philosophical Srihadi. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Srihadi gives us many variants in this new approach to the depiction of the dance. When he first started to focus on the idea of movement, he did so by paying with the parallelism of gestures and by emphasizing the realistic aspect of the dancer’s bodies. Color was then relatively secondary. By the early 1990’s rhythm had taken a life of its own, as shown by the vibrant dynamism of the dancer. In painting the present lot, the dancers’ eyes remain transfixed even as their body movements are transformed into a feast of glittering color. Even so, and however much the costumes of the dancers drift rhythmically over the canvas surface, it is in fact the artist’s working of this background that embodies the idea of movement.

Lee Man FongHe was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He has shown great artistic talent since young. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before engaged in full time painting in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits as well as acknowledgement. He was officially become a presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter.

An artist’s quest to find inspiration and spiritual contentment can take him on a long voyage far away from home. Such was the journey for Dutch artist Auke Cornelis Sonnega. Born in Leeuwarden and educated at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam (School of Arts and Crafts), Sonnega first set foot on Indonesian soil when he arrived in Batavia in 1935. He did his paintings in Parapat and Medan, North Sumatra, and Bali. He moved to Bali, which became a great source of inspiration for his painting.

After the war settled in Ubud in fellow artist Bonnet’s old studio in Puri Kaleran and dedicated himself solely to painting. His style is fresh and unique, clearly influenced by his designer training and background. It is very influenced by Art Deco and often graphic, however, his larger canvases often transcend these limitations and can even be thought to have a mystical impact. He also made many portraits, usually of doe eyed young men (he was in the words of a long time Ubud expatriate euphemism a member of the “club”). These are very stylized and use a brightpalate with strong outlining of his subjects. Sonnega, like Bonnet, stayed in Bali until 1957 when he was forced to leave by the Indonesia authorities in the era of Confrontation. The painting becomes all the more poignant when this separation is considered – the immortalization of a reality that was to him a fulfillment of a dream. He returned to Holland in 1959 and died in Den Haag in 1963.

Awang DamitBorn in1956, Kuala Penyu (Sabah). Awang Damit is one of the renowned abstract expressionists in Malaysia. After graduating from UiTM in Fine Arts in 1983, he crafted his way into the Catholic University of America to Washington D.C., to obtain Masters in Fine Arts (1989). Awang Damit now lectures in UITM. He has held positions as the Curator of the Art Gallery and Head of the Fine Arts Department before being appointed an Associate Professor in 2000.

While lecturing in UiTM, he completed the lauded series Marista (2002) and Iraga (2011). He also has started on his fourth series – Paya Ramahe – with a touch of modernity. His different styles of painting are what make people more attracted to his artwork. Awang Damit belongs to the second generation abstract expressionists in modern Malaysian art. This group widened the scope of their artistic expression turning landscapes and nature into a new set of visual language. In his paintings, everything is reduced to its essential elements, nothing superfluous. Colours are essential components. Immersed in a selection of earth colour, the master creates abstract spaces with his signature broad and daring brushstrokes. Awang’s non-representational painting, geometrical forms with diverse lines against subdivided background, is often unique and optimistic in spirit. Awang Damit has held various exhibitions namley the Bentuk and Makna by Galeri Seni FSSR (UiTM, 2000) and Intipati Budaya – Satu Sintesis show at the National Art Gallery (Kuala Lumpur, 1995). Awang Damit has also actively involved himself in shows abroad including in China, Taiwan, Japan and London.

Dullah was born in Solo, 1919. He studied painting under Affandi and Sudjojono but has his own distinctive style of naturalism. He was well known for his landscape and portraits paintings. He was one of the founders of HBS – Surakarta Cultural Community (1950). In 1956, he edited book of former Presiden Soekarno’s Private Collection of Indonesian Art (volume I & II). Since the early days of the independence, Dullah was very close to Soekarno, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia and was appointed by Soekarno to care for the President’s private art collection and as curator of the state painting collections. At age 70, Dullah built his museum, now a cultural landmark, as his dedication to a love of the arts over a creative lifetime. He has had numerous art exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas and in 1988 his work was included in the Art of Bali exhibition held at the East West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Now, his works been kept in Dullah Museum in Solo. He died in 1996.

Agung Mangu Putra Mangu Putra was born in Sangeh, Bali, on May 11, 1963. He graduated from the faculty of Art and Design at the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI), Yogyakarta majoring Visual Communication Design (1990). His first exhibition was in Dewata Gallery (1987) at Taman Budaya Denpasar. Being a designer did not satisfy him as an artist then he decided to engage in full time painting in 1998. Since his first solo exhibition in Ubud (1990) his name was considered as valuable painter in Indonesia. He held his solo exhibition at National Gallery, “Teater Rakyat”, Jakarta, 2010; “Silent Word”, Gajah Gallery, Singapore (2008), Mandala, Bidadari, Ubud-Bali (2007), “Belief, Rupa Gallery”, Surabaya (2005),etc. He also joined in several group exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali and other country. He received awards as the Best in Design Arts (during the 4th and 6th anniversary of ISI, as the finalist of Philip Morris Award in 1994 and Indofood Art Award 2002, Second Place, Jakarta. Through his work he expressed his gratitude towards God creations and tried to give alternative point of view about Bali from its touristy image. He gave specific themes on his work from which other painters did not pay attention to. Until now many of his works were collected by art collectors in Indonesia and overseas. Born in Hebei, 1942. She ever taught art at various Beijing and Zhejiang art institutes. She had actively participated in several group exhibitions since 1982. She performed his solo exhibition at the Nanjing Art Museum. Beside that, she achieved very successful overseas exhibitions in Hongkong, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Singapore, Macau and Jakarta.

Born in Palembang, South Sumatra, 1904. He was a self-taught painter whose works were mostly Indonesian landscape. He also produced paintings of Asian panorama. He was a painter, watercolorist, and draughtsman in the style reminiscent of the late of GP. Adolfs. He once lived in Jakarta for a long time then settled in The Hague until he died in 1976.
