The workshops Like this scene from last October’s New Zealand workshop, you will find our teaching to be
full of tutored hands-on practical studio work and field trips enabling you and like-
minded participants to master new techniques. This year the recently re-furbished
on-site conference room in Hastings Point will be the centre of our workshop
activities
The 2019 location and venue
For our May 2019 workshop, we are returning to beautiful Hastings Point and the award-
winning North Star Holiday Resort, the same venue for our 2014 and 2015 workshops.
This year however, we will be catering for slightly more advanced photographers who
are keen to learn new techniques to give their work an edge of visual difference!
Our workshop venue boasts a newly refurbished conference room with ample studio
space.
The resort offers a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets from apartments,
villas, cabins and powered sites. For those participants who wish to stay on-site and make
the most of the beach location and the lovely Tweed Coast at 1 Tweed Coast Road,
Hastings Point, phone 02 6676 1234.
Ripples is an on-site licenced cafe, the venue for our free welcome dinner on the night
before the workshop starts (drinks are optional). Ripples is also ideally located for your
breakfasts, lunches and dinners….or just a coffee and a snack.

Day 1
Saturday May 4th – 10am Start
10am-10.45am Wendy Verity, 2016 Emerging Photographer Award winner and workshop co-host

10.45am-11.15am Ken Ball, workshop host, international award winner, veteran photographer and mentor
The Challenge of Photography In its history of only 183 years, the practice of photography has emerged more that our forefathers could have ever imagined. From the early days when cameras were only for the very rich and processing was very rudimentary, we progressed to the Box Brownie which popularised family photography and picture albums to the social media of today where 633 million pictures EACH DAY are uploaded to Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.
11.15am-11.45am MORNING TEA 11.45am-12.45pm Murray Noble, guest speaker from New Zealand
Getting the most from Multiple Exposures Multiple exposure provides a pathway to explore any genre of photography in a different way. It can add complexity, reinforce impressionism, and add meaning to your creativity. In this course we will be looking at several ways of achieving multiple exposures, from in camera technology, post production techniques and layering images using light boxes.
12.45pm-1.45pm LUNCH
1.45pm-4.30pm
Field trip and studio work on more multiple image techniques Field work with Murray to experiment further with your double exposures and/or practice with Ken, Wendy and Dominique experimenting on light box overlays using any of your chosen images.
4.30pm day ends
Day 2 Sunday May 5th – 10am start
Ahead today and tomorrow: Murray Noble on using colour and shapes;
(centre) Dominique Papoutsou on awakening the creative spirit;
and (right) Wendy Verity’s example of something from nothing.
10.00am-11.15am
Dominique Papoutsou, guest speaker from New Zealand
Awakening the creative spirit Everyone one of us is creative. My talk is about exploring the creative mind from ideas and experiences,
gathering knowledge and information from all areas whilst enjoying the process. My passion for photography
has led me on a wonderful journey. By learning to be creative with my camera and being able to allow myself
the freedom to use the camera as a creative tool, has resulted in me being able to fully express my artisitic
freedom.
11.15am-11.45am MORNING TEA
11.45pm – 1.00pm Murray Noble
Using colour and shapes as your dominant features In this session we will be focusing on making colour the dominant tool of expression in largely abstract images constructed in class. Using coloured board or painted sheets we will be building up works that will reflect the members own preferences and creativity. Studio work will follow.
1.00pm -2.30pm
Field trip to the sunflowers If Nature is kind to us, we are planning a field trip to Farm & Co, in Cudgen, to photograph their beds of superb sunflowers. An optional light lunch will be available at their new restaurant. (If the sunflowers aren’t blooming, or the weather adverse, an alternative location will be selected the field trip and your lunch).
3.00pm-4.30pm Download your three best images of the day and your tutors and fellow participants will constructively review them.
4.30pm day ends (please wear your old clothes tomorrow for studio work)
Day 3
Monday May 6th - 10am start
Example of Wendy Verity’s abstracts from her presentation at 10am today.
10.00am-10.45am
Wendy Verity
Something from nothing In today’s presentation I will share some of the varied techniques and paraphernalia I collect, compose and entwine into my images. Learn to advance your visual perception as you go about your everyday life, exploring and enhancing your creative thinking and artistic methodology.
10.45am-12.00pm
Field trip with a model We are taking our model over the road to a glade and the beach for a really different field trip. Tutors will be with you to guide you and answer questions.
12.00pm-1.00pm LUNCH 1.00pm-2.00pm
Download before studio time Download for your favourite three images from the workshop so far and we’re off to the studio.
5pm
Select your favourite three images from the entire workshop for the production of our workshop book
“Mastering the ‘magic’ of art photography”. The book will be available from “Blurb” in two weeks for you to
preview free of charge or purchase direct from them.
5.30pm Workshop ends.
Studio time 2pm-5.00pm
Our studio time today will cover several tutor
guided genres, including:
Vellum paper, overhead projector film, mixed
media, collage and hand painted layering.
Experimenting with photo Encaustics finishes.
The power of light and darkroom chemicals;
creating with Cyanotypes.
Layered images and abstracts using Wendy’s
“found” and supplied items and Murray’s coloured
board and painted sheets.
Some classes will need to be kept in small
numbers because of the tutor’s time, space and
the use of chemicals.
But it is our earnest hope that you try every
technique of interest.
Please indicate your preferences when you book
to allow us to prioritise the afternoon.

What they said about the last workshop: Here’s just some of the feedback from our October 2018 workshop in New Zealand:
I have never been to a workshop like Pushing Boundaries and I have come away feeling inspired with
my photography again. I had not played with my camera for some time. But shall have a lot of fun
finding my passion again. I have had a lot feedback from photos I have taken from friends, far and
wide, as I shared some on Facebook. The Batch was a great spot for our meet and greet, and what a
spot for a photoshoot. I regret to say that the bottle of wine I won, which was Thomas 2017 Pinot
Gris’ has not made it to my cellar. Thoroughly enjoyed 😊 Please pass on my thanks also to the
other tutors Diane, Wendy and Murray. You all make quite a team!
- Vicki Beveridge
Well, I’m home safe and sound and a changed person! I wanted to thank you all for such a fantastic
workshop. You all so generous and patient with your time and experience. It was so fantastic to
devote time to our creativity and to meet others who are likewise inspired. I’ve already ordered a
light-box and I’m checking out a Lensbaby! Richard has offered to remind me when to eat and bring
me cups of tea if I get too obsessed --- hahaha
- Jo Immig
Just a quick but very big thank you for all the effort and love you brought to this wonderful and, at
least to me, very demanding workshop. Really great for me to meet you, and all the others --- this is
one meeting I will always treasure. And, of course, the richness of all learned and seen will be woven
into my thinking. Also important for me is the re-discovery of very creative people from all walks of
life. It was amazing. Thank you very much. I believe you can look back to a very successful workshop
delivered, and what an effort it was too!
- Roland Seibertz
Thank you so much for a great and inspirational workshop. Such a nice atmosphere too, everyone so
friendly and helpful. I now look forward to seeing the workshop book too.
- Nancye Gault
Just a note to say THANK-YOU for a great weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire weekend! Hope
you had a good trip back and a good rest when you got home.
- Sally Hill
I really enjoyed this course Ken...the best one yet for me, thank you both so much.
- Carol Pearce
