SHORT DESCRIPTION The Master of CULTURAL MANAGEMENT & VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS’ is

designed for students with a strong background in the arts and humanities. The purpose of the

program is to combine management, policy and decision-making training with advanced study in

humanities. Arts and cultural managers are required to play multiple roles in arts organizations.

They function as community leaders, planners, facilitators, and fund-raisers. They must know

how to advocate and communicate the value and mission of an organization to diverse audiences

including artists, business people, government officers, and member of local communities. The

program in Cultural Management & Visual Communication strives to achieve the optimal balance

of advanced studies in arts and cultural theory policy, management, and hands-on-experience.

LEARNING RESOURCES

Our students are expected to undertake a great deal of personal study and research to

prepare for lectures, seminars and assignments. The university has extensive learning resources to

help the students’ work. The facilities include:

1. Library collections of book stock, serials subscriptions and a growing range of audio

visual materials

2. Access to electronically held information via data-bases, CD-ROMs and Internet.

Communication and IT services

Computing skills are now a requirement for all programs as an essential aid to learning

and preparation for further careers. The Department of Cultural Studies’ has entire disposal of

three halls one of them with 12 computers (Internet access provided) and a library with relevant

literature in Bulgarian and English will be available to students during whole study period.

CULTURAL MANAGEMENT& VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS’

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Program’s Structure

The Master in Cultural Management & Visual Communications is designed to develop

21st cultural managers. The program prepares students for a rapidly shifting cultural, economic

and social environment and political context. It was designed for those interested in using the arts

strategically and creatively to develop thriving cultures by bridging the non profit and profit

cultural sector.

The program is a one year program two year program that enables students to explore the

challenges involved in creating and sustaining cultural organizations. Number of ECTS credits

awarded: 90 - 120 (the number will vary according to the applicant's previous studies). Students

are required to take 60 credits (one year) after obtaining a Bachelor degree in the following fields

of study such as Cultural Studies, Arts, Anthropology and Sociology). or 120 credits (two years)

after obtaining a Bachelor degree in the other fields of study to complete the program and receive

a Master Cultural Management & Visual Communications. The program provides profound

specialization and top-level qualification in the cultural management professional field. It is

completed as a cohort and students are required to take all courses in sequence and to work

collaboratively in teams. After successful thesis defence they are awarded a Master Diploma.

The Masters in Cultural Management seeks to give students the necessary professional

skills to undertake tasks of cultural management and administration. On completion of the

program, students should be able to take up positions of responsibility in the various public areas,

in cultural areas of both the public and commercial private sector, including the world of

audiovisuals and arts. The principal job opportunities for those completing the program are:

- Manager or administrator of cultural services, facilities and projects.

- Cultural mediator.

- Manager of cultural companies and industries.

- Programmer and promoter of social and cultural activities

- Manager of festivals or cultural events

- Public relations and cultural sponsorship.

EVALUATION

Forms of evaluation

In almost all courses, the final mark is determined on the basis of term papers, or some

other kind of written work/ project work, and some form of examination. In lecture”‘tutorial

courses, or in seminars, the final mark may be partially based upon student participation in group

discussions. In every course, the requirements and the method of evaluation are made clear at the

beginning of term.

Students should make sure that they understand well in advance what the requirements are

in any course they are taking. If they have doubts they should approach the lecturer directly. The

Faculty of Arts deadlines for submission all written assignments to individual instructors must be

adhered to.

Course status in the Educational Curriculum:

The compulsory course “Spatial arrangement of festivals and events” is included in the curriculum of the subject Cultural Studies.

Course description: Teaching includes studying of fundamental processes and ways of creating festivals and other cultural and community events; managing the space when organizing fashion shows, concerts; design and implementation of specialized costume; design and implementation of various parts, accessories and other specific components involved in the overall visual spatial- plastic image of the proposed specific area.

Course Aim: The "Spatial arrangement of festivals and events" course is aimed at study of design and creation of spatial arrangements of fashion shows, concerts, public events, exterior work and participation of the cultural manager in various stages of implementation. The same applies to the process of creating film, theater or concert costumes.

The course aims to: To introduce students to the basic principles of organization and

realization of space To encourage the development of critical attitudes towards trite

design and trash in the stage arrangement; To prepare students for participation in the development of

analyzes and projects related to the spatial layout.

Educational Methods: Observation, demonstration, practice.

Preliminary Conditions: Students should follow current processes of design and creation of spatial arrangements of fashion shows, concerts, public events, exterior work, work at a theatrical stage or in a television or film studio, also they should watch closely the participation of the cultural manager in various stages of implementation. The same applies to the process of creating film, theater or concert costumes.

Evaluation:

The results achieved in the training process are assessed according to the requirements of Regulation No21 of Ministry of Education of 30th September 2004 which implements a system of accumulating and transfer of credits. The rating depends on the extent to which the student: has a knowledge of the research literature uses appropriately the terminology related to the topic manages to tackle the problem fully and in different aspects shows an ability of critical and original thinking.

Course description: The creative work of the cinematographer, the author of vision, is in production conditions and requires high professional mastery, special cinematographic knowledge, specific capabilities, a wide general culture, capabilities for communication within the team, knowing how to contact with film or TV Director in the selection and arrangement of material, this shot shall ensure that activities in the discipline "VISION in CINEMA".

Course Aim: The objective is to form in students total volume of knowledge and practical skills necessary in achieving the tasks for the practical implementation of the realisation of the artistic image in the movie in a team with the operator, to form the skills students for analysis of

Course description: The course is an overview and application of visual work within a critical and conceptual framework provided by anthropology. The central aim of the programme is the production of visual work within a critical and conceptual framework provided by anthropology. Through this course students are introduced to a range of topics which currently include: the anthropology of art; visual anthropology; film; and a general anthropological consideration of representation.

Course Aim: At the core of the didactic concept is the effort to focus on specific aspects

of using visual and audio-visual media to research, represent and produce

anthropological knowledge.

Educational Methods: Lectures, group work and case studies. The principal feature of the course

is the practice –oriented approach.

Preliminary Conditions: The student is expected to gain knowledge which determine the visual

anthropological praxis Evaluation: Evaluation will be on the basis of: (a) Practical work (project work) in

seminar meetings – 50% of the final result ; (b) written exam – 50% of the final result

Course content:

Definitions and scope of producing. How is it used in the Bulgarian Situation. How is it used in the European Union.

Teaching :

Teaching course takes the form of lectures. At the beginning of the course is made introduction, giving information about the main topics of the course and why there is a connection between them; the criteria for assessment and requirements for assignments are clarified. In the process of introducing the new topics to students, at the beginning of each lecture there is a talk with them. The seminars include the use of multimedia for visualization of specific processes and phenomena, PowerPoint presentations and analysis of everyday life in view of the arts and cultural organizations.

Evaluation: /Assessment/:

Students make a paper, test and one control work during the semester. The requirements for obtaining credits are: regularly visiting the classes, active participation in discussion, participation in project preparation and completion of tasks.

Course status in the Educational Curriculum:

An optional course included in the curriculum of the subject Cultural Studies.

Course description: Teaching includes studying of fundamental processes and ways of creating a film, television and theater stage design; managing of space when organizing fashion shows and concerts; designing and implementing of film and theater costume; designing and implementing details and accessories in sceneries; also weapons and other special components involved in the overall visual spatial-plastic image of the space design.

Course Aim:

The course "Space and Design" focuses on studying design and creation of film and theater scenery; exterior work, spatial layout of fashion shows, concerts and public events, as well as participation of the Stage Designer in various stages of implementation. The same applies to the process of creating film, theater or concert costumes. Students are familiarized with the work of the Production Designer within a specific production team. Emphasis is placed on the specifics implementation of spatial layout in line of the script or the art conception task. Special attention is paid to the philosophy of colour and special lighting.

Educational Methods: Observation, demonstration, practice.

Preliminary Conditions:

Students are required to follow the modern process of designing and creating spatial layouts of fashion shows, concerts, public events, exterior work and to watch closely the collaboration of the Cultural Adviser in various stages. The same applies to the creating of film, theater and concert costumes.

Evaluation: The results achieved in the training process are assessed according to the requirements of Regulation No21 of Ministry of Education of 30th September 2004 which implements a system of accumulating and transfer of credits. The rating depends on the extent to which the student: has a knowledge of the research literature uses appropriately the terminology related to the topic manages to tackle the problem fully and in different aspect shows an ability of critical and original thinking.
