Studentsmaywishtotakeoneoftheirelectivecoursesasanindependentstudy.Suchcoursesfocusonthestudyorinvestigationofadefinedproblemortopic,orreadingsinasubstantiveknowledgeareawhichmaylegitimatelybethebasisofindependentstudy,isrelatedtoyourchosenconcentration,andisnotavailableasaregularcourse.StudentsmaynottakeindependentstudiesasasubstituteforrequiredFoundationorConcentrationcourses.

MSW/MPH Dual Degree ProgramFull-time, regular standing students can earn a MasterofSocialWork (MSW)anda MasterofPublicHealth (MPH)withanemphasisin HealthPromotionandPolicy.Graduatesofthedualdegreewillbewell-positionedtofindemploymentasahealthpolicyadvocate,healthagencyadministratororinanintegratedbehavioralhealthsettingasacaremanagers,healthcoach,patientadvocate,counselor,orteamleader.Studentspursuingdualdegreesmustbeindependentlyadmittedtoeachprogram.Only Regular Standing (RS),full-timeMSWstudents(bothclinicalorPP&Aconcentration)willbeadmittedtotheprogram.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Advisor

SpecialAdvisementisoneofseveralpossibleresourcesofchoiceavailabletoadvisorandstudenttosupplementorreinforcetheregularservicesoftheadvisor.Specialadvisementshouldbeconsideredbytheadvisorandthestudentalongwithotheravailableadvisorysupplements.
Inmostcases,resolutionoftheacademicdifficultiesthroughSpecialAdvisementwillbeattemptedbeforeaStudentStatusReviewonacademicgradeperformancewillbecalled.
Inemergencyorexceptionalcircumstances,reportedinwritingbytheadvisororthestudent,theDirectoroftheSchoolmaywaivetherequirementofSpecialAdvisementpriortoStudentStatusReview.
Initiation
SpecialAdvisementisnormallyinitiatedbythefacultyadvisor;itmayalsobeinitiatedbythestudentorafacultymember,uponwrittenrequesttotheadvisor,statingthesituationwhichisbelievedtomakespecialadvisementdesirable.
Specialadvisementproceduresmaybeinitiatedwhenevertherearespecialacademicinterestsand/ordifficultiesbelievedtorequireadvisoryservicesotherthanthatavailablefromtheadvisor.
Composition of Special Advisement Meetings
A Special Advisement committee will include:
a. Thestudent’sadvisor,whoservesaschair,isresponsibleforawrittenreportofthediscussionandsuggestionsmade,andsharestherecommendationswiththestudent;
b. Facultymember(s)concernedwiththespecialinterestsand/ordifficulties;and
c. Attheoptionofthestudent,anadditionalfacultymemberofthestudent’schoice.
Procedures for Special Advisement
a. Thefacultyadvisorwillarrangeameetingassoonaspossibleaftertheneedarisesortherequestismade;
b. Thestudentwillbeprovidedanopportunityattendandparticipateindiscussionwhenappropriate;
c. Theadvisorwillhaveresponsibilityforassessingthesuggestionsandcollaboratingwiththestudentandothersonfollow-upactions.
d. Dependingontheissueofconcern,studentsmaybeplacedonacademicprobationimmediatelyfollowingaspecialadvisementuntilthegoalsoutlinedinthestudent’sactionplanhavebeenmet.
Student Status Review
Preamble
TheSchoolofSocialWorkchargesafacultycommitteewiththeresponsibilityforthestatusreviewofanystudent’sacademicperformanceandprogressintheclassroomandinthepracticumsettingwhichviolateexpectationsofperformanceappropriateforasocialworkstudent.
Socialworkstudentsareexpectedtoestablishandmaintainprofessionalrelationshipsatalllevels,bothwithinandoutsidetheclassroom(withfaculty,staff,andstudents;withindividualclients,groups,thecommunity,andothers).Thisentails,amongotherthings,adheringtostandardsofacademichonesty;respectingselfandothers;andbeingabletocommunicateinwaysthatarenon-exploitativeofothers.Moreover,socialworkstudentsareexpectedtosubscribetoandabidebythevaluesandstandardsofthesocialworkprofessionasexemplifiedintheNationalAssociationofSocialWorkers(NASW)CodeofEthics.
Thestudentmayappealthefacultycommittee’sdecisiontotheDirectoroftheSchool.UponreceiptoftheCommittee’sdecisionandtheminutesofthehearing,and/oranappealfromthestudent,theDirectorwillactuponthematterandimplementthedecision.TheDirectorwillcommunicatethisdecisiontothe

General Guidelines
TheStudentStatusReviewprocessmaybeinitiatedby:
a. thestudent,
b. thestudent’sfacultyadvisor,and/or
c. anyfacultymemberconcernedaboutthestudent’sstatus
AfacultymemberwhoinitiatesthereviewshallnotserveontheStudentStatusReviewCommitteeorvoteonthematterbeforethecommittee.
AnyoneinitiatingtheStudentStatusReviewprocessmustmaketherequesttotheChairofthecommittee.Studentperformanceandbehaviorwillbereviewedbythecommitteeinthefollowingcircumstances:
a. Studentfailstocorrectdeficitsinhis/heracademicperformanceasstipulatedinpriorSpecialAdvisingagreementsand/or
b. Facultyexpressconcernoverattitudinal,behavioral,orethicalconsiderationswhichquestionsthestudent’sfitnessfortheprofessionofsocialwork.
Thecommitteewillincludeinitsdeliberationsallavailableinformationrelatingtostudentperformance,includingacademicperformance,attitudinalorethicalconsiderations,andpersonalcircumstanceswhichaffectacademicperformance.Thecommitteemayrecommendoneofthreeactionsonthebasisoffactualevidence:
a. DismissalfromtheSchoolofSocialWork
b. Academic probation
c. Proceedwithoutprobation
Dismissal from School
TheStudentStatusReviewcommitteemayrecommenddismissalfromtheSchoolforastudent
a. whoseacademicclassroomorpracticumperformanceisjudgedtobeunacceptable.ThiscanleadtoacademicprobationordismissalfromtheSchoolofSocialWork
1. Earning a grade of “F” in any course
2. Failuretofinishcourseworkintheclasswherethegradeof“I”wasassignedwithinthegiventimeframewillresultinthegradeof“I”beingconvertedtoagradeof“F”
b. whofailstosatisfyconditionsofprobation.AstudentissubjecttodismissaluponfailuretoraisethecumulativeGPAto3.0bytheendofthesecondprobationarysemester,oratanytimeasemester/termorcumulativeGPAfallsbelow2.0.
c. whenhis/heracademicperformanceintheclassroomorinthepracticumsettingisinconsistentwiththespiritandtheletteroftheNASWCodeofEthicsinsituationsinwhichethicaljudgmentistobeexercisedandprofessionalinterventionorprofessionalconductisplanned.
Initiation Procedures
1. AwrittenrequestforStudentStatusReviewwithsupportingmaterialmustbemadetotheChairofthefacultycommittee.Suchrequestmustspecifystudentperformanceand/orconductthatnecessitatereviewofthestudent’sstatus.
2. TheChairofthecommitteewillforwardtherequestandsupportingmaterialtomembersofthecommittee.Thecommitteewillreviewtherequestanddetermineiftheissuesmeetrequisite

3. ThepersoninitiatingtherequestforaStudentStatusReviewmayrequestthatsuchreviewbecanceledordiscontinuedbysubmittingawrittenrequesttotheChairoftheCommitteegivingreasonsfortherequest.Uponreceiptoftherequestforcancellation,theChairoftheCommitteeshallpollmemberstodeterminewhethercancellationisappropriate.Suchrequestwillbemadeasearlyaspractical.
4. ThepersoninitiatingthereviewmustbepresentduringtheStudentStatusReviewprocess.
5. Astudentwillhavetherighttopresentdatawhichchallengestheallegationsnecessitatingthisreview.
6. Astudentmayaskupto3individuals(faculty,staff,orpeerstudents)toaddresstheCommitteeonhis/herbehalf.TheseindividualswillbeinvitedtoattendthemeetingtomaketheircommentsbutwillnotattendthefullStudentStatusReviewsession.
7. Astudentwillbeabletoquestionanyoneparticipatingintheproceedings.
8. Theprocedureforcommitteemeetingincludesthefollowing:

(w)StudentsmayappealtheCommittee’sdecisiontotheDirectorwithinten(10)workingdaysafterreceivingnotificationofthedecision.Theappealwillbeinwriting.
(x) TheDirectorwillactupontheCommittee’sdecisionand/orthestudent’sappealandimplementhis/herdispositionofthematterwithinten(10)workingdaysofthereceiptofthedecisionand/orthestudent’sappeal.
(y) ThestudentmayappealanadversedecisioninthemannerprescribedbytheUniversity.
Follow Up to Student Status Review Committee Meeting
Shouldafollowupmeetingberequiredtoaddressanyrequirementsrelatedtothestudent’sprobationstatus,thestudent,student’sadvisororsubstituteadvisor,andthemembersoftheStudentStatusReviewCommitteewillattendthemeeting.Atthefollowupmeeting,thestudentwillprovideanupdateontheactivitiesrequiredbytheStudentStatusReviewCommittee.Allprobationaryrequirementsmustbemetbeforeanyfieldpracticumplanningcanoccurinasubsequentsemester.Ifthestudenthasnotmettherequirementsrelatedtoprobationarystatus,s/hewillbedismissedfromtheprogram.Ifanynewallegationsand/orevidencearereceivedbythecommittee,asecondStudentStatusReviewwillbeheld.
Dismissal Appeal Process
Initiation Procedures
1. ThestudentmustnotifytheMSWProgramDirectoroftheirintenttoappealadismissalwithintwoweeksofreceivingnoticeoftheirdismissal.TheletterofappealshouldbetypedandsubmittedtotheMSWProgramDirectorbypersonaldelivery,regularorovernightmail,orasaWorddocumentattachedtoane-mail.Appealswillnotbeacceptedbytelephone.Thisrequestmustprovideevidenceforwhythedismissalshouldbeoverturned.Withinten(10)workingdaysfollowingreceiptofthestudent’sintenttoappeal,theMSWProgramDirectorwillcommunicatetothestudenthowthepro-gram-levelappealsprocesswillbeconducted.
2. TheMSWProgramDirectorwillforwardtherequestandanysupportingmaterialstothestudent’sad-visor.Theadvisor,orinher/hisabsencetheMSWProgramDirector,willorganizeanAppealsReviewCommitteetohearthestudent’sappeal.
