How To Manipulate the Group Process

As a facilitator, one might organize a group at a schools

teacher/parent association meeting, a union members meeting or a

community assembly of homeowners; the type of meeting is irrelevant.

What is relevant is the fact the gathering is being held for the distinct

purpose of controlling the outcome of the meeting.

The facilitators objective may be different from the goals of

those assembled; however, if the group were manipulated correctly, the

final decision would match the intended aim of the facilitator. How

exactly would this happen? In the following example, youll see how

easy it is to manipulate a group by following a set of rules. I use this

meeting example as a way to show, on a micro level, the facilitators

ability to manipulate and how this Administration uses similar

    techniques.

    A Union Meeting

Assume this is a Union Meeting, specifically called for the

purpose of deciding whether to raise dues or keep them the same. It is

in the interest of the facilitator to raise dues and generate more funds

for the union even though the members would prefer not to increase

union fees. Nevertheless, the facilitator will do whatever it takes to

push the crowd towards his position. This is group manipulation, but it

    7/16

    34

is not the Alinsky method. However, there are similarities in that both

methods manipulate members by dividing the group into smaller, less

powerful factions, ridiculing opponents, and seeking to even destroy

members seen as threats. When Obama and Pelosi talk about Wall St

vs. Main St. or the rich vs. the working class, they are dividing us into

    smaller groups.

There are 8 steps the manipulator (facilitator) may take to

    manipulate the group:

    1. Separate them. Friends are not allowed to sit together tosupport each other. The facilitator might start at the front of

the room and ask everyone to count, individually, from 1-7.

The result - all the ones would sit together, the twos would

be placed together, and so on. In that way, everyone would

sit with strangers and be less likely to stand out or

disagree with the facilitator. This takes away power from

    individuals.

    2. Talk to each member individually. The facilitator letsindividuals believe he/she is gaining trust and enjoying their

conversation by talking to each one individually.

However, this is really a manipulative ploy so the facilitator

learns who is strong in character and who is weak and is

    8/16

    35

able to assess those who pose a threat to his manipulation as

well as those who can easily be swayed. This knowledge

greatly enhances a facilitators ability to control individual

    members.

    3. Take a useless vote. In this scenario, the group leaderannounces the issue which is Should union dues be

increased? Members are then asked to write down their

opinions. He collects the opinions, organizes them and

reads them back to the group. When reading back the

responses of the group, the facilitator has control over

which responses are revealed; he can leave out, some of

those he doesnt like or, at least, give them all equal weight.

He can even make up his own answers. How would they

know? All during this process, the group is under the

impression they are arriving at a group decision. They are

unaware of the fact they are being manipulated into a

specific decision pre-set by the facilitator. Once the

comments are read, he opens the issue up for discussion.

Naturally, those comments, which oppose the goals of the

    facilitator, would be downplayed.

    36

    4. Support the facilitator. If members agree with the goalsof the facilitator, they are supported and given time to

express their reasons. In order to reaffirm the opinions of

those who are supportive, the facilitator will spend time

with those members and ask them to repeat the reasons why

they support higher dues. This helps to paint a picture of

    strong support for his view.

    5. Ridicule the opposition. People who disagree with thefacilitators opinion about higher dues are ridiculed and told

that a refusal to support the views of the group demonstrates

a lack of team effort, and the dissenters failure to support

better retirement plans, more vacation days and healthcare.

Whether any of those benefits are true is irrelevant. As

well see with Alinsky as well, the ends justifies the means

including lying to arrive at a pre-determined goal. In group

dynamics, the majority of the group will usually side with

the facilitator and even join in to ridicule the opposition,

    not realizing theyre being manipulated.

    6. Destroy those who push back. Even with ridicule, thereare some members who will not give up their beliefs; in this

case, the facilitator will set out to destroy those people. The

    10/16

    37

people will not, literally, be destroyed; however, they will

be destroyed or disabled for the purpose of the meeting.

This destruction is accomplished through even harsher

ridicule, sarcasm, or possibly ending the debate because

those who stand in contradiction with the facilitator are

getting too obnoxious or rude or unruly. The group

leader may say something manipulative such as it is clear

you do not want what is best for the members or we

cannot have people here that are not team members. How

can anyone argue with that? Generally, they will not, and

the facilitator is completely in control of the meeting. In the

Obama administration, this is a common tactic. His mantra

is repeated over and over that his enemies, usually

Republicans, do not want what is in the best interests of the

working class. Who doesnt want whats best for

    workers?

    7. Stop the Debate. At some point, almost everyone willhave spoken, and it will be time to wrap up the meeting.

The best way to stop people from objecting is by denying

    them the right to speak.

    11/16

    38

    8. Control the decision. Eventually the facilitator willannounce the groups decision by repeating the agreed-upon

points, which, of course, the facilitator has nicely

manipulated. He announces the decision to raise union dues

for the good of the members. He congratulates the group for

their brave decision and explains that these increases will

    help to expand benefits.

Overall, the members of the group will leave the meeting believing

they have participated in the process of deciding to raise dues or keep

them the same. Little do they know the entire process has been

manipulated towards a desired end by the facilitator.

    How to Create Victims

The art of manipulation can take place on any level, from the

individual and small groups to a large audience of millions. Never

underestimate the powers of manipulation. When executed well,

manipulators can turn normal human beings into followers, believers or

    even murderers.

    The Stockholm Syndrome

The Stockholm Syndrome may be the closest analogy to why

people or civilizations become enthralled and supportive of their

  • 8/9/2019 Master of Manipulation: Obama Administration | Part 3: Groups

    12/16

    39

deceptive leaders. Stockholm Syndrome occurs wherein the captives,

such as kidnapping victims, after a few days of isolation, threats and

abuse, allign themselves with their captors or manipulators. When

unsuspecting people are threatened or fearful for their lives, a

manipulative captor, who is seemingly supportive of them and allows

them to live, after threatening to kill them, can be seen as a savior.

Victims who are kidnapped often side with their kidnappers and feel no

need to seek help and freedom.

The Stockholm Syndrome is based on a real bank robbery.

    Stockholm, 1973

In the summer of 1973, four banking customers of the

Kreditbanken in Stockholm were taken hostage by two armed criminals

during a failed bank robbery. The three women and one man were held

hostage in a bank vault for 6 days with dynamite strapped to their

bodies. Surprisingly, the hostages bonded during that time with their

captors, and after being released, tried to protect the gunmen from the

    police.

Later on, the hostages refused to testify against their captors,

and some even raised money to aid the criminals with their legal

defense. It was also reported that one of the hostages eventually

became engagedto one of her jailed captors.xxv

    This unusual behavior

of supporting your subjugators and resisting your release became

known as the Stockholm Syndrome, and it can be applied to any

aggressive relationship between a victim and a manipulator or

    controlling person.

The Kidnapping of Patty Hearst, Another Example of Stockholm

    Syndrome

During a San Francisco bank holdup in 1974 by five armed

robbers, two civilians were shot ; it looked fairly ordinary until a

review of the bank video tape revealed one of the bank robbers was

publishing heiress, Patricia Hearst. Patty had been kidnapped two

months before, at gunpoint, from her Berkeley apartment by three

members of the Symbionese Liberation Army or the SLA.

Russell Little and Joseph Remiro, proponents of Radical Leftist

ideology, organized the SLA and the group never had more than 8-12

members at any given time. Just like other leftist organizations that

sprung up during the Vietnam War, the SLA stated its goal was to help

the less fortunate. Sadly, the groups attempt to achieve its goals was

overshadowed by murders and robberies committed by its members,

mostly white, middle class thugs. During the SLAs two year reign of

terror, Hearsts kidnapping was probably their most notable claim to

    fame.

Patty Hearst, was held for months, and according to her own

testimony, was kept in a tiny closet, that barely allowed her the space to

lie down, most of the time. Her activities were strictly controlled, and

she was raped by the two leaders of the group while regularly being

threatened with execution. Just as the Stockholm hostages experienced

a change in their perceptions, Patty allowed the fact, that her captors

did not kill her, to manipulate her decision to support her captors and

become one of them. She was finally captured in 1975 and spent 21

months in prison after President Jimmy Carter commuted her original

    sentence of 7 yearsxxvi

    Kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart

    .

Elizabeth Smart was only 14 when she was kidnapped at

knifepoint from her bedroom on June 5, 2002. Her captors were Brian

David Mitchell, an ex-communicated Mormon, and his wife, Wanda

Barzee. The two held young Elizabeth captive for 9 months.xxvii

Elizabeth was initially tethered to a tree in the hills just 3.5

miles from her family's home. She stayed with her captors over the next

nine months, traveling between California and Utah living in transient

camps, and wearing a veil in public to hide her identity. Surprisingly,

even when she was able to escape or call for help, she did not attempt

to do so. It was not until alert viewers of TVs Americas Most
