By the 17th century people no longer wanted Catholic artwork

and many artists turned to painting the flat, recognisable

18th Century

The 18th century 'Grand Tour' involved many rich young people

touring Europe visiting places famed for their art and architecture. They

would often buy souvenirs, paintings depicting ruined or intact

architecture.

19th Century

One of the most important developments in the history of

landscape painting was the invention of photography. New

equipment meant artists started to create spontaneous paintings

outside.

20th Century and Beyond

As the world becomes more built up, urban landscapes

feature more heavily in landscape painting, as well as

artwork which reflects the change to landscapes caused

by industrialisation and population growth.
