Master of Arts in Southeast Asian Studies Entry requirements and how to enrol Academic requirements: A good first university degree in a social or cultur- al science or economics, awarded after a course of study with a minimum standard length of three years‘ full-time study. For this first degree, you should have achieved a mark of or equivalent to 2.5 under the German marking system, or ranked among the top 33% of graduates in your cohort. Language requirements: English at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This is usually proven by means of a recognised language certificate, such as TOEFL with a score of at least 240 (computer-based), 580 (paper- based) or 94 (Internet-based), or an equivalent language certificate. About the degree programmeIn addition to imparting in-depth and specific knowledge of Southeast Asia, the research-orient-ed Master of Arts programme in Southeast Asian Studies equips students with the methodology and practical skills needed to independently tack-le complex academic subject matters.

Its regional focus on Southeast Asia gives the de-gree programme direct relevance for one of the world‘s main growth areas. All courses of this programme are taught in English.

In addition, the Language Centre of the Univer-sity of Passau offers Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Chinese language courses, giving students the opportunity to acquire or perfect their skills in one or more Asian languages.

Programme syllabusThis programme encompasses three modules:

A) In the Theories and Methods module you are acquainted with the theory, empirical studies and research methods relevant to the study of South-east Asia.

B) In the Focus Module you set your own priori-ties in terms of cultural area, working area and subject. You will select at least two examination modules from the following four focus modules:

• Development Policy and Economic Change • Gender, Religion and Culture • Conflicts, Disasters, Nation-Building Pro-

cesses • Urbanism

C) In the Research Module you conduct inde-pendent research abroad.The programme includes a Master’s thesis which you will write in English on a topic chosen from your focus module (module group B).

Career prospectsThis programme qualifies students for occupa-tions in which complex issues have to be ad-dressed in an independent and analytical manner and where rigorous, regionally specific knowl-edge and skills relating to Southeast Asia are re-quired. Graduates find work in the private sector, in the civil service and political institutions. Their in-depth knowledge of Southeast Asian languages and cultures makes graduates particularly inter-esting for multinational companies or aid organi-sations, as well as the tourism sector.This Master’s degree opens up access to doctoral study.
