the global multibillion dollar sports industry has experienced, formidable and sustained growth since the 1990s. this phenomenon is due in part to various factors including societal changes (people’s aspirations for a better and healthier lifestyle), the emergence of a culture based on the admiration of modern-day athletic heroes, and the growing importance of sports marketing and tV rights for corporations. the multiplication of international and national events including olympic games, world championships and alike, generates enormous public attention but also millions of dollars in revenues each year. Opportunities are virtually limitless in the sports industry, however, risks and abusesalso exist, such as those brought by doping, excessive gambling, and sport clubs’ disproportionate use of financial debt.

iuM’s Master in international Sport Business Management prepares participants for a variety of positions in the industry. the program equips students with solid skills and competencies but also with the ethical values to become responsible business leaders.

A word from the program director

as a member of the track and Field team in college, i experienced the true meaning of these words. i learned that performance requires preparation, commitment, talent and the right attitude, values that have served me well during my time as a financial analyst. additionally, i discovered that the financial industry praises accountability, entrepreneurship and professionalism.

the Master in international Sport Business Management builds on these values. the program is designed to provide participants with the technical skills and competencies necessary to become effective business leaders. Moreover, the program seeks to cope with and address the industry’s latest issues and topics such as violence and racism around sport events, doping, and drug abuse, to name a few. as such, as a means to develop or strengthen their soft skills, participants will be prepared to handle these issues and ultimately become ethical and responsible business managers. as a result, the program is envisioned to both match the needs of the sports industry and foresee future developments, especially in corporate finance as professional teams more and more venture on financial markets or structure increasingly sophisticated financial deals.

the reality is that the sports industry is a fast-evolving environment. Besides being highly competitive (as illustrated by the seasonal and inflationary war for the award of football tV rights), the industry has in recent years experienced profound changes. the size of the industry has reached stellar proportions as shown by the 2011 Super Bowl during which a 30-second advertising space reached a record price of $3 million. although “the

united States accounts for 40% of the global sports market’s revenues,” the european market has grown tremendously as football has become the dominant tV rights revenue driver (europe, the Middle east and africa account for 43% of the global sports market’s revenues).(2)in addition to this phenomenal growth, the sports industry has become more professional and complex. the growth of professional clubs, especially public firms, requires business managers with solid public relations, financial, corporate finance, and marketing skills. For example, in light of these industry changes, the Barcelona Football club, which generated €398 million of revenues in 2009 (the 2nd largest in europe, behind real Madrid), profoundly changed its corporate culture in 2010 when it appointed “holders of MBas and business degrees” to its Board.(3)

the international university of Monaco has designed the Master in international Sport Business Management as a comprehensive and demanding program that fosters students’ experiential learning, provides real opportunities to network, and enables students to pursue successful careers in the sports industry.

the Master in International Sport Business Management program has three major instructional components: the core courses, the electives, and the professional immersion. the below courses will be taught either in the classroom or through iuM’s e-learning platform.

Core Coursesall master students need to complete the core courses. in a series of compulsory courses students examine a broad variety of subjects that will allow them to i) understand the forces that influence the fast-evolving multibillion dollar sports industry, ii) develop concrete managerial skills and competencies, and iii) acquire sports-related skills necessary to take on various career opportunities in this industry. core courses focus on the theoretical and functional keystones of the sports industry, such as communication, operations, accounting and financial management, and the legal environment.

Electiveson successful completion of the core courses, master students will choose and enroll in electives to further develop key topics, aspects, or functions of the sports industry. this allows participants to relate certain theoretical aspects of the curriculum to real-world issues and better shape future career goals and directions.

Professional Immersionthe professional immersion module consists of a series of seminars, guest lectures, and field trips and culminates in an internship or a research thesis. More specifically, during the academic year, students will have the opportunity to examine, discuss, or be exposed to contemporary issues and top-ics through seminars, guest lectures and conferences, firm and educational visits and supervised field projects. these issues and topics will include in particular drug and doping

prevention, violence and racism around sport events, sport tourism, action sports, and disabled sports. these events will allow students to engage in constructive dialogues with business practitioners, consultants, or industry experts.

afterwards, students will have the opportunity to engage in a six-month internship and get professionally immersed into local, non-governmental, governmental, or international private organizations. this work experience can serve as a spring board for accessing attractive job opportunities. iuM and the inSeec group have separately developed extended networks that together represent for students invaluable resources for both personal development and career advancement. alternatively, students may complete a research thesis (on a subject that matches the student’s career interests or one of the program partners) during which they work under the guidance of an academic advisor.

in addition, throughout the academic year, students work in partnership with the Career Services Office as part of iuM’s commitment to helping each student realize his/her career potential. these activities include training for resumé enhancement, marketing techniques, mock interviews, or personal assessment. career events and services include in particular the career Days and the preparation and publication of cV books for hundreds of recruiting firms and partners.

Corporate Finance Applied to the Sports Industrythe course is an advanced corporate finance course that discusses current industry issues faced typically by large sport corporations and surveys topics such as both public and private debt and equity offerings, ipos, M&as and other related corporate finance events.

Corporate Social Responsibilitythe module provides students with a thorough understanding of modern corporate social responsibility issues and the tools and techniques to design and properly implement cSr strategies.

Fundamentals of Communicationthe curriculum explores the role marketing plays within companies and society. it focuses on the development and analysis of consistent marketing strategies and provides students with the skills and competencies to i) elaborate communication programs or events and ii) effectively implement these programs. in addition, the course provides students with concrete public relations and fundraising techniques and methods.

Fundamentals of Financial & Managerial Accountingthe course addresses topics including financial control, budget and financial forecasting, working capital management, break-even analysis and sources of financing in a small and closely-held business environment.

International Business Lawthe curriculum is an introduction to international and eu law that govern the free movement of people, creation and management of sport business entities, and related topics.

Management and Leadershipthis module provides an overview of basic management processes, concepts, techniques, and tools; and presents the concepts of leadership and global competition. Students will develop an understanding of the critical role management plays in modern business and learn how business functions are linked together.

Organizational Behavior & Cross-Cultural Managementthe course introduces students to the management of human resources in dealing in particular with selection, training, placement, appraisal, compensation, and employee representation in a multicultural environment.

Project Management Applied to the Sports Industrythe module introduces students to the field of project management as it applies to the sports industry. it seeks to impart the knowledge and skills students will need to successfully complete projects within time, budget, scope, and quality constraints. Students will learn to develop project plans that address problems on a case-by-case basis as projects are proposed, and to manage projects through various phases to completion.

Sustainable Development and Entrepreneurshipthe course combines foundational knowledge and deepens educational specialization in the crucial area of sustainable development and entrepreneurship. the course also provides students with the practical skills to address social, economic and environmental challenges with an integrated approach.

Athletes’ Image Rights, Sponsoring Contracts, and Tax Issuesthe curriculum explores the legal framework and management of image rights, sponsoring contracts and tax issues in the context of the sports industry.

Overview of the European Football Industrythe module overviews the legal and regulatory framework and the industry’s main players. in addition, the course discusses various issues including the management of expensive professional teams, merchandising, tV rights and related topics.

Sports Agents and Sportsmen Wealth Managementthis course is an introduction to the sports agency legal frame-work and wealth management & financial planning applied to professional athletes.

Sports Bettingthe module overviews the legal and regulatory framework that characterizes this fast-evolving sector of the sports industry. the course also explores potential future developments.

Sports Contemporary Issues, Sustainability & Ethicsthe curriculum introduces students to various topics including the role of state in sport, the rise of the sport tourism, the rise of violence and racism around sport events, or the emergence of celebrity scandals.

Sports Clubs and Associationsthe course provides a general overview of the management of small-to-medium-size enterprises and not-for-profit sport organizations.

Sports Event and Facility Managementthe curriculum is structured in two modules. event manage-ment encompasses the organizational and strategic planning of special events, Hr management, event administration, advertising and event logistics. Facility management involves legal and administrative planning, risk management, compulsory competitive tendering, marketing and financial planning. in addition, the course overviews specific management issues in relation to seasonal sports such as winter sports and water sports.

Sport History and Olympic Valuesthe course introduces students to history, careers, and fundamental values of the olympic movement.
