PLACEMENT OF SOME OF OUR ALUMNI

Today’s global marketplace defies the traditional distinctions between work in the private, non-profit, and public sectors. Due to the heightened collaboration taking place both within and between these sectors, global professionals increasingly require a strong foundation in the skills and modes of operation found in each. The MIR program provides the necessary skills for success and leadership in this increasingly complex global labor market.

Beyond these skills, the program offers access to an incredibly diverse set of students, faculty, and support staff from different national and cultural backgrounds. Students will enter into a network of MIR alumni who are doing amazing things all over the world.

“When I first thought of joining the MIR, I was looking for a complement for my technical background and my quantitative-driven working experience and IE seemed to offer the perfect program. Its broad portfolio of topics from Social Sciences to Politics, History, and Economics are able to enrich professionals from any walk of life. MIR dedication to humanities, combined with economics and business, provided the best insights for my “home coming” and after graduation, I reengaged in the private sector and found myself reshaped for new challenges. Beyond the dynamics amongst individuals, every institution with planetary reach is all about balancing different economies, different political and regulatory systems, and different cultures. I am now responsible for critical risk

management and regulatory controls in Brazil’s rapidly evolving financial environment. As an alumnus of the MIR, I’m always glad to feel prepared for a ever-more competitive economy.”

THEREFORE, WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD A SUCCESSFUL AND FULFILLING CAREER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS?

MULTIDISCIPLINARY, MULTILINGUAL TRAINING: One of the many effects of globalization is that more and more people obtain an internationally-oriented education and work in international, diverse and dynamic environments. This raises the stakes to a new level and requires that the international relations professional becomes a well-rounded generalist, able to understand today’s complex political, economic and cultural environment. The Master in International Relations prepares students to achieve competence in a wide set of disciplines and skills including Languages, Humanities, Economics, Politics and Business, among others.

MULTI-SECTOR APPROACH ACROSS THE PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND NON-PROFIT SECTORS:

The MIR distinguishes itself from other international relations programs by focusing on synergies between the private, public, and non-profit sectors. The study of international relations has traditionally centered on the role of states, war, and national security issues. As globalization of the world economy and advances in technology and communication accelerate and erode national borders, the line between domestic and foreign policy has become increasingly blurred. New actors like MNCs, NGOs, financial institutions, or media groups have now become key players in shaping contemporary global affairs. Through its privileged relationship with IE Business School, the MIR is ideally suited to provide students training which both encompasses and transcends these sectorial distinctions.

The program is designed to help you transform your international calling into a specific career plan.

APSIA Affiliate MemberAPSIA comprises 34 member schools and 25 affiliated programs in North America, Asia, and Europe, all dedicated to the improvement of professional education in international affairs and the advancement

thereby of international understanding, prosperity, peace, and security. The Master in International Relations at IE is an APSIA Affiliate Member since September 2010.

WORLDWIDE RECOGNITION IE School of International Relations and IE Business School are closely integrated. The School of International Relations offers courses that permeate all the undergraduate and postgraduate programs at IE. At the same time, IE School of International Relations benefits from IE Business School’s expertise and its international recognition, consistently ranked among the best business schools in the world. As such, some of the Master in International Relations classes will be taught by selected professors from IE Business School, thus offering a thorough and diverse vision of International Relations.

FACULTY At IE, our students learn from international professors with wide-ranging experience in academia, policy research, non-profit management, and private enterprise. Each year, IE also welcomes a small number of carefully selected visiting professors from prestigious institutions around the world. The MIR also enhances the learning process inviting internationally recognized authorities from the private, public, and non-profit sectors to interact with students and present seminars on a range of global issues.

INTERNATIONAL NETWORK Students at IE enjoy a truly international atmosphere, with more than 90 nationalities present on campus and a faculty comprised of roughly 50% international professors. Year by year, this forms the basis of IE’s strong network of more than 45,000 alumni spread over 100 countries across the world. They share far more than a master’s degree. They share the IE experience, a life-changing experience in an international school that is independent and diverse.

TEACHING METHODOLOGYOur training emphasizes a constant back-and-forth between theory and practice; between applied experiences and exercises. These experiences include workshops in diplomacy, conflict resolution and social entrepreneurship; debates, oral presentations, and simulations; and a focus on the case method which encourages students to bring theory into practice regarding concrete problems and challenges in international relations. Throughout the year students rotate in small working groups, facilitating a diverse and multi-perspectival learning environment.

“After nine years in Banco de España, in October 2009, I joined the International Monetary Fund, as “Advisor to the Executive Director for Mexico, Spain, Venezuela and Central America”. It is an amazing and demanding job, especially during these times of crisis. In short, I represent Spain and the other countries in my constituency at the Executive Board of the IMF. Beyond economics, which of course constitutes the backbone of my daily work, the MIR provided me with a number of tools that are very useful in my current job. Understanding the socio-political dynamics, both at the domestic and international levels, and the driving forces behind them has proven critical to grasp the context in which economic developments take place.”

MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS14

BEYOND BORDERS (OPTIONAL)MIR students will have the opportunity to expand their international experience by choosing to either participate in one of our academic exchanges with our European partner universities or by taking part in a professional Beyond Borders experience.

In this first period, students will gain core skills and competencies which they will then apply and hone throughout the year-long course. This includes a foundation in classical international relations paradigms, micro- and macro-economics, quantitative analysis, comparative politics, and international political economy.

In addition to acquiring the skill set necessary for international success, it is essential that students learn where and in what field they aim to target their professional energies. For those with a global vocation, this involves identifying the geographic area which is best suited to one’s particular professional goals and global vision. As such, in the second MIR semester we offer a series of courses designed to provide students foundational knowledge in the politics, economics, and society of the world’s most important geographic centers, along with an introduction to crucial fields of work in global politics.

Regardless of the particular field and continent where one chooses to focus, a strong foundation in finance, management, and strategy will help students achieve their professional, organizational, and social goals. Indeed, one aspect of the MIR which sets it apart from other International Relations Masters programs is its proximity to the IE Business School, which allows us to offer students a more rigorous foundation in these core topics. In addition, the 3rd semester course load is reduced so as to allow students the time necessary to advance their Masters Theses (see next Section).

The June-July period emphasizes work on the Masters’ Final Project as well as electives and workshops. The Final Project is a 50-page document, written under the supervision of a faculty member of your choice, which allows students to develop expertise in, and make an original contribution to, a specific field of knowledge. The Final Project is an essential component of the MIR program which very often serves to track and propel students into a particular field of work. In addition, in the month of June students will be able to choose from a series of elective courses and workshops which offer specific, hands-on training in different IR fields.

The Beyond Borders Experience allows interested students to add an optional 4th semester to their MIR curriculum, in which they can choose to spend an exchange semester with other internationally renowned universities such as Sciences Po or St. Gallen, or do internships with selected MIR partner organizations.

ADMISSIONS’ PROCESS

“MIR had everything I was looking for and more when applying to Master’s programs in International Relations. In fact, it was the only program I found that offered a beautiful balance between traditional international relations courses but also offered the opportunity for a growth of knowledge in the world of business. Also, MIR was a perfect fit for me because it offers a French course, a trip to Brussels, and exposure to students from all over the globe. Lastly, my scholarship with the Organization of American States (OAS) not only carries with it a huge honor, but more importantly has helped make this experience possible and I am forever grateful to OAS.”

A Word from the Dean

I would like to thank you for your interest in IE’s Master in International Relations.

Whether you read the information in this brochure, explore the school website, or ask members of the widespread IE community (which consists of students, alumni, professors and other IE professionals) you will reach the same conclusion - that selecting IE for your graduate studies in international relations is the first step in a successful strategy for your professional and personal development.

The Master in International Relations is a program wholly dedicated to teaching, researching, and reflecting on world affairs. As such, it will act as the spearhead of IE’s international projection, which responds to our firm belief that global awareness is vital to the success of today’s projects in both the public and private sectors. It is not by mere chance that some 45.000 of our alumni are working on 5 continents, and that more than 100 nationalities are represented among our student body. In addition, the diversity of our faculty places us among the most international postgraduate institutions in the world.

The Master in International Relations’ objective is to train internationally-oriented professionals for excellence, achievement, and leadership in an increasingly complex and multipolar world. The program features courses on international politics, international economic and business environments, regional studies, skills, languages and fieldwork on the European Union, which provides a unique lens into both the opportunities and challenges which result from increased international cooperation.

The Master in International Relations at IE provides all the ingredients for success in an international career. Should you decide that IE is the right place to pursue the knowledge and professional skills necessary in a dynamic and changing world, the extent of your contribution to society and professional success will depend solely on your commitment to achieving them.

But don’t take our word for it - find out for yourself!
