Sticking to your regular exercise schedule during the holiday season might be challenging, but there are ways to stay on track throughout the busy weeks ahead. Planning your workouts around the shopping sprees, parties, and the arrival of house guests is something to start thinking about as the holidays approach. As you prepare for the holidays, do not give in to the temptation to ditch your regular workouts altogether. Exercising during the festive season not only helps you deal with the added stress that is associated with the holidays, it also gives you the energy you need to accomplish daily tasks. Sticking to a regular exercise routine will also help you manage your weight through the seasonal parties and social gatherings. Here are some strategies that can help you navigate holiday fitness and nutrition obstacles: Strategy #1: Keep moving. Exercise wherever and whenever you can, even if it’s for short bouts of time. Take the stairs, park far away, play outside with the kids or dog or walk around the neighborhood to look at holiday decorations and lights. Strategy #2: Control your eating. Don’t treat every party or social event as an invitation to indulge. Eat before going to a party, add some veggies to your plate of holiday goodies and opt for low-fat holiday dishes when available. However you deal with the holidays, make this the year that you don’t neglect your workouts or gain extra weight. Make a decision to do everything you can to stay active and eat healthy while not depriving yourself of all the fun. Remember, it’s all about moderation. Every little bit you do adds up to staying fit and keeping the holiday pounds off. december 2014 www.HealthPlexOnline.com cape fear valley HealthPlex Doneen Johnson member in the spotlight healthplex hours mon. thurs., 5 a.m. 10 p.m. friday, 5 a.m. 9 p.m. saturday, 7 a.m. 7 p.m. sunday, 11 a.m. 6 p.m. play center hours mon. thurs., 8 a.m. 8 p.m. friday, 8 a.m. 7 p.m. saturday, 8:45 a.m. 1 p.m. sunday, 12 4 p.m. Swim Lessons Monday & Wednesday Classes Jan. 5 – 27 Preschool 3 – 3:30 p.m. Level 1 3:30 – 4:15 p.m. Level 2 4 – 4:45 p.m. Level 4 4:15 – 5 p.m. Tuesday & Thursday Classes Jan. 6 – 28 Adult 11:15 – Noon Preschool 3 – 3:30 p.m. Preschool 3:30 – 4 p.m. Level 1 3:30 – 4:15 p.m. Level 3 4 – 4:45 p.m. Level 2 4:15 – 5 p.m. Level 2 & 4 5 – 5:45 p.m. Level 1 & 3 5:45 – 6:30 p.m. Level 5 6:30 – 7:15 p.m. Adult 7:15 – 8 p.m. Saturday Classes Jan. 9 – 30 (4 lessons, ½ price) Parent & Tot 10 – 10:30 a.m. Preschool 10:30 – 11 a.m. Level 1 11 – 11:45 a.m. Level 2 11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Level 3 12:30 – 1:15 p.m. Keep Fit Over the Holidays january Swim lessons are non-refundable and offered to full-time members only. For more information, call 615-7640. For the past two years, Doneen Johnson has attended cardio fitness classes and done weight training several times a week at HealthPlex. What started out as a simple request to work out with her husband, has fueled a dramatic weightloss and a new passion for exercising and getting healthy. “My husband, Quincy, initially got me into exercising,” said Doneen, “but the HealtPlex staff has been wonderful at providing tips for healthy habits and exercise routines to maximize the benefits of working out.” By not overdoing workouts and being realistic about her weightloss goals, Doneen’s been able to prevent burnout. “I quickly realized results do not come immediately,” said Doneen. After getting serious with her workouts, Doneen lost over 20 pounds over a six-month period. “You have to go in open-minded, just as you would anything else. Build time into your busy schedule to work out. Find ways to work out while you are at home, at the office or on the go,” said Doneen. Doneen paired her workout routines with diet changes for maximum results. By eating more leafy greens, vegetables, fruits, whole wheat foods and lean meats, she felt better and got more energy to tackle workouts and get through the day. Her health is something Doneen won’t take for granted from now on. “Take care of yourself now before your health becomes something you wish you had,” said Doneen. 2015 membership special During the months of December and January, your friends and family members can join the HealthPlex for only $15! stocking stuffers Need help coming up with stocking stuffer ideas?
