Introduction to Massage

Enhancements

Massage enhancements are

mini spa services designed to

enhance your clients massage

experience, provide a variety of

added benefits for your clients,

and increase your income!

Some massage enhancements

can be added seamlessly into

your client’s regular massage



time and some will add a few

minutes to the total service time.

Which ones you choose to offer

will depend on how you book

your services. It is easy to start

with just a couple of

enhancements and add more to

your menu as you invest in

different products and learn to

market them.

In this book you will find

detailed supply lists, instructions,

product resources, sample menu

wording, marketing ideas, and



quick notes for each

enhancement. The quick notes

are designed to be printed, and

kept on hand in your massage

room for reference.

You will be able to explain the

benefits of each enhancement to

your clients, and start selling

these services!

A few basic supplies and

equipment are needed for

almost all of the enhancement

services. Extra towels and

washcloths (the softer the better),



a hot towel warmer (also called a

cabi), treatment products (you

can buy or make your own), and

essential oils. If you don’t have a

warmer, a small roaster like this

can be used.

Just be sure to keep it heated

to only 120-130 degrees, and



ALWAYS check any towels and

washcloths for a comfortable

temperature before applying to

your client’s skin.

Practice each enhancement at

least three times before you offer

it to a paying client. This way you

can be sure to work out any

glitches in your set up and

procedure.

Enhancements can also be

used as Thank You and Birthday

gifts for clients, this can save you

from having to offer discounts on



your regular services. Just add a

complementary enhancement

and you have a nice new client

offer or monthly special.

Several enhancements can be

combined to create unique spa

services for your business.



Chapter 1 Hand or Foot Scrub:

Exfoliation

Time: 10 minutes for hands and

10 minutes for feet. This can be

integrated into your regular

massage time or additional time.



Benefits: Removes dead skin cells

allowing for optimal skin function

and detoxification. Feels and

smells great. Leaves skin

exfoliated, and softer.

Additional benefits will depend

on essential oils and type of

product used.

This enhancement can be

called a scrub, exfoliation, or salt

glows (if you use a salt product).

However I prefer scrub because

you can offer a choice of

products, or vary them by season.



Also scrub is fairly self

explanatory on your service

menu.

You can buy or make your own

products. Nice scrubs can be

made from salt and oil, sugar and

oil, ground pumice, ground nuts

and nut shells, even coffee. I have

provided some resources for

products at the end of this book.

Supplies: 1 small bath towel, 4-6

hand towels, 4 washcloths, towel

warmer or small roaster, small

water bowl, scrub product, and a



product cup (2 ounce size). I use

reusable Tupperware cups.

Hand & Foot Scrub Procedure

1. Use 2 towels and 2 washcloths

for hands or feet. Place

dampened towels and

washcloths in towel warmer.

With practice you will learn

how many you like, I usually put

a few extra. Add your product

in a product cup to the warmer.

With client on the table, under

the covers and supine (face up),



place a small bath towel under

the feet. If working on hands

place a hand towel under the

hand. This is so you will not get

scrub on the sheets.

2. Apply the product to one hand

or foot using light circular

motions. Pay extra attention to

areas of rough or dry skin. Use

more pressure on the bottoms

of the heels. Add a little water

or oil to your product if it

should start to feel dry. Scrub

for 2-4 minutes. Leave product



and repeat on the other foot or

hand.

3. With warmed towels (check

them and make sure they are

not too hot) remove scrub from

feet or hands. It can take

several towels and washcloths

to remove all of the product.

Take your time as this part feels



good to the client. Be sure to

remove ALL of the product

from between your client’s

fingers or toes!!

4. With a dry wash cloth wipe the

feet or hands quickly to “flick”

away any remaining bits of

product. Remove the towel on

the massage table as well.



5. Apply a moisturizing lotion

(preferably warmed) and

continue with your clients’

treatment.

With a little practice this

treatment can usually be done in



8-10 minutes for hands or feet.

For both 15-20 minutes is about

right. With 30 minutes or more of

massage or reflexology added for

the hands and feet this can be a

wonderful spa service. For extra

pampering include a paraffin

wax treatment.

Supplies: 1 small bath towel, 4-6

hands/feet

• Proceed with scrub

• Remove product using wet towels

then dry towels (flicking)

• Apply lotion



Chapter 2 Back Scrub

Time: 10 minutes either

integrated into the massage time

or additional time.



Benefits, supplies and product

information are exactly the same

as the hand and foot scrub info. I

prefer to do the back scrub as the

last part of a massage service.

Walnut scrubs are a favorite for

back scrubs, add a few drops of

essential oil if you would like.



Back Scrub Procedure

1. With your client prone and

their back draped, apply

approximately one ounce of

warmed scrub product to the

entire back. You can add the

backs of the arms if you would

like.



2. Using light to medium pressure

scrub the back and back of the

arms for 4-5 minutes.

3. Remove product using warm

towels and washcloths. It can

take several towels and

washcloths to remove all of the

product. Take your time as this

part feels good to the client.



4. Remove as much product as

possible with warm towels and

washcloths then, with a dry

wash cloth wipe the feet or

hands quickly to “flick” away

any remaining bits of product.

5. Apply a light warmed

moisturizing lotion to the back

and arms.

• Apply scrub to client’s back.

Gently scrub back and arms for 5-

10 minutes

• Remove product using wet and

dry towels.

• Apply pre-warmed lotion to entire

back



Chapter 3 Aromatherapy Enhancement

Time: Integrated into the

massage time.



Benefits: Aromatherapy doesn't

just smell good, it also has many

benefits. Some commonly known

benefits of aromatherapy are:

• Stress Relief and Relaxation

• Mood and Well Being

Enhancement

• Relief of minor discomforts

• Anti Viral and Anti Bacterial

with Immune Boosting Effects

There are many great books

and classes on the subject of

aromatherapy. I suggest that you

buy some and learn as much as



you can. It’s a good idea to start

out with a few basic oils such as

Lavender and Tangerine, and

then add to your selection as you

learn more about the properties

of each essential oil. Blends can

be purchased and it is nice to

have a selection of those as well.

Supplies needed: Several

essential oils, and/or essential oil

blends. Unscented massage oil or

cream.

*Important warning* Do not use

essential oils on pregnant women



without the proper training on

essential oil safety and

pregnancy.

Aromatherapy Procedure

1. Help your client select the oil or

oil blend they would like for

their session.



2. Add 4-6 drops to 2 ounces of

massage oil or cream. Proceed

with massage.

3. When you work on the face

place one drop of essential oil

in your hands, rub them

together, and then allow your

client to inhale

the aroma. Add

a little massage

cream and

continue with face massage.

4. Add a few drops to a room

diffuser during the treatment.



Price: $5-$15 depending on your

massage price, the cost of the oils

you are offering and your training

in aromatherapy. If you keep it

simple with just a few choices

you may want to include

aromatherapy in the price of your

massage. You could include a

special take home gift with

aromatherapy massage and

charge a little more. For example:

Aromatherapy bath salts, body

oil, or lotion.

Chapter 4 Hair and Scalp Mask

Time: 15-20 minutes added onto

massage time.

Benefits: Moisturizing treatment

for the scalp and hair, also a great



treatment for itchy scalp

conditions. Very relaxing!

Supplies: Hair Mask product or

Jojoba oil, 3 hand towels, towel

warmer or small roaster, a hair

wrap, or shower cap for your

client to wear home.

*Important* be sure to explain

this service in detail! If you do not

have shower facilities your client

will be wearing their hair mask

home! The best time for this

enhancement is at the end of a

massage or service if they wear it



home. If the client will be

showering work this into the

session so that it stays on at least

30 minutes.

Hair & Scalp Mask Procedure

1. Have 2 (wet and wrung out)

towels in your towel warmer,

and 2-3 ounces of mask

product.

2. Place a dry hand towel under

your client’s head and a

warmed rolled towel under

their neck.



Neck roll: warm wet towel, with

a dry cloth wrapped around it.

3. Start with 2-3 minutes of

relaxing scalp massage.

4. Wrap a warmed towel around

your client’s head and massage

for a minute. This feels great

and will dampen their hair, this



makes the product easier to

apply.

5. Start applying mask product in

several places near the scalp,

massage into the scalp, and

then move the product out

with your fingers to apply to the

hair.

6. Keep applying and massaging

the product in until the entire

scalp and hair is evenly covered

with product. This should take

10-15 minutes.



7. Cover the hair with a spa

turban or shower cap, and end

with a little shoulder massage.

Price: $20-$30 depending on the

amount of time used for the

service and product cost.

Chapter 5 Aromatherapy Facial

Massage

Time: 15 minutes in addition to

regular massage time.



Benefits: Relaxing, relieves sinus

pressure, relaxes and nourishes

facial muscles, and can have anti-

aging benefits when done

regularly.

Supplies needed: Aromatherapy

blend in carrier oil suitable for

your clients skin type, natural

facial cleansing cloths and a

chart of facial acupressure points.

Aromatherapy Facial Massage Procedure

1. Use a facial cleansing cloth to

remove make-up and clean the



skin. Apply a small amount of

carrier oil (about the size of a

dime) and 1-2 drops of your

essential oil blend to your

hands.

2. Apply oil to your clients face

using flowing upward strokes.

3. Lightly work the acupressure

points on the chart. Slightly

more pressure can be used on

the forehead and sinus points.

It is also fine to just do a 10

minute relaxing face massage.



Do what you feel comfortable

with.

4. Optional, apply a hydrating face

mask for 10 minutes, then

remove with a warm towel.

Price: $10-$25 depending on

length of service and products

used.

Aromatherapy Facial Massage is a

rejuvenating and anti aging

treatment. Stress will melt away

with a combination of soothing

massage for the facial muscles



and targeted acupressure

massage. Leave the skin toned

to your clients face

• Gently work on acupressure

Chapter 6 Back Mask

Time: 20-25 minutes can be

integrated into massage time.

Benefits: Relaxes back muscles.

Can be nourishing or detoxifying



to the skin. Benefits will depend

on the mask product used.

Some different product

options for a mask treatment are

clay, mud and aloe products

designed for body wraps. These

can be ordered online.

Supplies: Body brush, or loofah, 4-

5 hand towels, mask product,

essential oils (optional), product

cup, product application brush,

plastic wrap, heating pad,

thermophore, or hydrocollator

packs.



Back Mask Procedure

1. Place 4 wet and wrung out

towels, and mask product (in a

product cup) in your hot towel

warmer or crock-pot.

2. Remove massage oil or lotion

with a warm towel, dry with a

dry towel. This feels best if you

lay the towel across the entire

back and massage the back

through the towel for a minute.

3. Gently exfoliate the back using

the body brush or loofah.



4. Apply mask product in a thin

even layer using a brush or your

hands.

5. Cover the back with plastic

wrap, then a towel and heating



pad. Alternatively you can use a

warm towel with a blanket over

it to keep the heat in. Leave on

for 10-15 minutes. Massage legs,

feet or scalp while the mask is

on. Warm towels may not stay

warm for 15 minutes, check and

replace if necessary. Please be

careful using heat with

products.

6. Make sure the entire area is

covered with plastic and

towels. Check in with your

client about the temperature!



7. Remove heating pad and

plastic wrap. Then remove the

mask product with the

remaining hot towels.

8. Apply a soothing finishing

lotion.

Evenly cover face and neck

with a thin layer of face mask

product.

4. Leave on for 10 minutes, and

continue with your regular

massage on the body.



5. Thoroughly remove product

using hot towels. Make sure

they are not too hot, by

checking the temperature on

the inside of your arm.



6. Apply moisturizer to face again

using upward light massage

strokes.

Face Mask Quick Notes

Supplies: Natural facial cleansing

wipes, face mask product, fan

• Cleanse face with a cleansing wipe

• Apply mask evenly with a mask

Chapter 8 Foot Soak

Time: 5-10 minutes

This is a great extra treat you

can offer your clients before their

massage. They will start relaxing



before you even get your hands

on them! The foot soak can be set

up in the treatment room or

waiting area. Add a warm neck or

shoulder wrap to make it even

more special. This is not

something to charge extra for

but it will make you stand out

from the crowd. This can also

make a very special foot

treatment with reflexology and

paraffin wax added.

Supplies: Foot bath like this or a

large bowl (available at most



kitchen supply stores), bath salts,

essential oils, 2 towels, a pitcher

and an electric kettle.

I had a beautiful foot bowl

made by a pottery student

complete with river rocks in the

bottom and sealed with a clear

glaze that I loved using.



Foot Bath Procedure

1. Place clean bowl and on a

towel in front of the chair

where your client will sit.

2. Fill the bowl with warm water,

from your kettle and pitcher.

You can also fill the bowl at the

sink, or carry warm water in the

pitcher. The kettle comes in

handy if you need to add some

hot water. Check the water

temperature! Add a

tablespoon of bath or Epsom



salts and a few drops of

essential oil.

3. Have your client sit down and

place their feet in the bowl. Ask

them if the water temperature

is suitable. Adjust if necessary.

Be VERY careful when adding

hot water!! Have your client

take their feet out of the bowl,

if they are already in it.

4. Add a warm neck wrap and

leave them to relax for 5-10

minutes.



5. Dry their feet or give them the

towel to dry their own feet.

Be sure to clear the water bowl

away while your client gets on

the massage table. Rinse the

bowl then let it soak for 1 hour

filled with water and 1 teaspoon

of bleach. Then wash with regular

dish soap.

Foot Soak Quick Notes

Supplies: Foot Bowl or Spa, Warm

Water and Epsom Salts with

Essential Oils

• Fill the foot bowl with warm

water

• Seat client and have them place

feet in the bowl, check the

temperature.

• Warm neck wrap

• Let client soak for 5-10 minutes

• Dry the feet

• Sanitize the foot bowl



Chapter 9 Hot Stones as an

Enhancement

Time: Integrated into the

massage, no additional time

required.



*This treatment should only be

done by therapists having proper

training in Hot Stone Massage.

This section shows you how to

use your training to offer an

additional service. This is not a

substitute for a Hot Stone

Massage class!

Benefits: Promotes deep muscle

and tissue relaxation alleviates

stress, relieves pain, improves

circulation, calms the psyche,

and can be very grounding. Many



clients love the added warmth

and feeling of the stones.

Supplies needed: 10-12 palm

sized basalt massage stones, a

small roaster oven to warm the

stones, 4 hand towels, water

pitcher, thermometer, and a

wooden spoon.

Hot Stones Procedure

1. Warm 10-12 stones as you

normally would, checking the

temperature carefully.

2. Incorporate stones into the

back massage and foot



massage during the massage

session.

3. Time: 10-15 minutes should not

add extra time to your client’s

session.

Chapter 10 Body Brush for the

Back

Time: 5 minutes, can integrate

into massage time or add

additional time. This is a great



extra that you can offer your

clients free of charge.

Benefits: Removes dead skin

cells, stimulates the lymphatic

system, and stimulates

circulation. There are many other

benefits claimed by body

brushing enthusiasts so you may

want to do further research on

your own.

Supplies needed: A body brush



Body Brush Procedure

1. Before massaging the back

take the body brush and brush

down the back in short

medium pressure strokes for

about 5 minutes.

2. You can then apply a hot towel

if you wish, remove and

proceed with massage.



Price: Free-$10

Your client should keep the

brush, or you can keep it at your

office for your clients use. Natural

bristle brushes cannot be

sanitized.

▪ Spa Menu Sample: Dry Skin

Brushing exfoliates, getting rid of

the dead cells and revealing new

healthy skin cells. This refreshing

technique has many health

benefits. Take your brush home

for continued benefits.



Body Brush Quick Notes

Supplies: Natural Bristle Body

Brush

• Brush the back with short to

medium strokes, using

medium pressure. Check with

your client about pressure.

• Apply a hot towel, then proceed with massage or finishing lotion.



Chapter 11 Paraffin Wax

Treatment for Hands & Feet

Benefits: Heat therapy. The wax

used in paraffin treatments is a



soft type which melts without

burning the skin. When the

melted wax is applied to the

hands and feet the heat

increases blood flow and relaxes

the muscles. The result is relief

from joint stiffness and pain, as

well as increased flexibility. This is

an effective therapy for arthritis or

tendonitis, and overworked tired

hands and feet.

Skin softening: Paraffin

treatments treat dry skin

conditions by softening the skin



and removing dead cells. The

wax helps to lock in the skins

natural oils and increases skin

elasticity.

Relaxation: Another benefit of a

paraffin treatment is

aromatherapy. Essential oils and

heat used during a session, add

to the relaxing experience.

Supplies needed: Paraffin Wax

Heater, Paraffin Wax, Hand and

foot protectors (aka plastic bags),

Hand and Foot Booties (Heated

Booties are great for this service



too), Ladle, Moisturizing lotion or

oil, towel to protect table and

sheets.

Paraffin Wax Procedure

1. Have paraffin wax melted and

ready and all supplies

organized and ready.

2. Massage moisturizing lotion

into hands or feet for a few

minutes.

3. Ladle approximately 2 ounces

of paraffin into a plastic bag,

shake bag so the paraffin coats

all sides of the bag.

4. Test on wrist to make sure

product is not too hot.

5. Place the bag on your clients

hand or foot, being careful not



to spill paraffin. Make sure the

paraffin is evenly coating the

hand or foot. Place the bootie

over the hand or foot to hold in

heat.

6. Proceed quickly to the other

hand/foot.

7. Continue with the rest of your

treatment, leaving paraffin wax

on for about 15 minutes.



8. Remove the bootie; massage

the plastic bag around the

hand/foot to help remove the

wax. Then remove the baggie

and as much wax as possible.

9. Throw the baggie and wax

away!

10. Remove any remaining wax

with a warm dry towel.

11. Apply moisturizing lotion/oil

again if needed.

$25-$40 for both

paraffin wax and aromatic oils,

Tension Reduction

Time: 45-50 minutes

Back & Neck Tension Reduction Procedure

1. Begin with your client supine

and on the table. Proceed with

a detailed scalp, neck and

upper shoulder massage for 10

minutes.

2. Ask your client to turn over and

get comfortable in the face rest.

Proceed with a detailed deep



tissue (if requested) back

massage for 20 minutes.

3. Arnica oil is very nice to use for

this service.

4. Remove massage lotion/oil

with a warm wet towel and dry

the back with a warm dry

towel.

5. Brush the back in a soothing

motion for 2-3 minutes.

6. Apply mask product with a

brush or your hands. Cover with

plastic wrap, a warm dry towel

and a heating pad. You can also

use a thermaphore,

Scrubs

For a simple basic scrub recipe

just mix Coarse Sea Salt or Sugar

with Oil at a 2:1 ratio.

For example, mix 1 cup Salt

with 1/4 cup Coconut Oil and 1/4

cup Vitamin E oil. If you are only

using one kind oil mix 1/2 cup Oil

with 1 cup Salt or Sugar. Then

add 3-4 drops of Essential Oils

and stir it up. Adding one or two

capsules of vitamin E oil will

preserve your product longer.

An easy way to do a Foot Soak

is to use store bought mineral

bath salts, bath fizzes, teabags, or

natural bath foam. Some fun

extras are, smooth stones on the

or flower tops, fresh herbs, lemon

or orange slices, and warm neck

Soothing Foot Soak

This foot soak is good for

aching feet aches, removing

odors, and softening rough skin.

Mix the essential oils in the

salts and add ¼ cup to 1-2 gallons

of water for soaking.

1/2 cup epsom salts

5 drops peppermint essential

oil, 3 drops tea tree oil, 3 drops

lavender

Lavender Milk Bath Foot Soak

1 cup milk (keep powdered

milk on hand, not fat free)

3 drops lavender essential oil

Mix the milk up in a measuring

cup, add essential oils and stir,
