Jesus' baptism is his first public act and thus unquestionably im-portant. After all, Jesus acts directly, now as an adult. Why is this first step in Jesus' earthly ministry so significant?
First, is that this baptism is a collaborative effort: "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness". John must concede to baptize Jesus; Jesus must seek the baptism of John. Together, their obedience to God's plan is a step on the path of righteousness.
Second, is the aim of "fulfill[ing] all righteous-ness." The term can encapsulate complex no-tions of justice, uprightness, correctness, inno-cence, and redemption. Joseph is called right-eous when he intends to end his relationship with Mary quietly. In the Sermon on the Mount, those who yearn for righteousness and are oppressed because of their pursuits of it, will receive God's blessings. Overall, righteous-ness is an interior quality and a matter of exter-nal practice.
Thus, "to fulfill all righteousness" means acting in obedience to God in a way that coordinates internal dispositions and external action. Jesus' first steps in public ministry are a combination of a compliant spirit and a powerful, public display of his obedience to God's call. Jesus' baptism is essential and a step of righteousness is confirmed by the divine voice. God's approv-al is unequivocal. Jesus is reaffirmed as God's child as he begins his journey to the cross. Moreover, God's love for Jesus is reaffirmed as well. Though Jesus' life will be characterized by temptation and suffering, God's love is no less real. God's approval of Jesus is multifold. He and John together have acted in obedience to God at this moment, and now Jesus will certainly not divert from the straight path laid before him. "...with whom I am well pleased."
John plays a dual role in these verses. Having proclaimed the pow-er of the one who is to come, he is also faithful to concede to a baptism whose necessity he may not fully understand. In submit-ting himself to John, Jesus combines great power and acquies-cence. Jesus is not a king who won't deign to tread the humble paths of his servants. Jesus' hold on his power is not so tenuous that he must zealously hold on to it at all times. For Jesus, power and humility, authority and submission, power and relationship are not at odds.

Live Stations of the Cross
The Live Stations of the Cross is a Lenten practice that for many years has been kept by the Hispanic community here in Santa Agatha. Unfortunately we stopped doing it because we did not have people who could commit or interested in participating in this tradition that Is a form of prayer accompa-nied by meditation on the events that oc-curred on that path of Christ.
This year we want to re-take this tradition again with your help. We are requesting committed people who want to participate and take on the different roles within the Stations of the Cross. The re-hearsals are scheduled for Thursday, from 7:00 p.m.—9:00 p.m. beginning in the month of January.
If interested please call the Religious Education office at (323) 935-0963. You can also contact Mrs. Blanca Ovie-do at (323) 828-3901.

DID YOU KNOW?
What is child sex trafficking? Child sex trafficking occurs when a minor is involved in a commercial sex act where sex is traded for money, food, shelter, drugs or anything else of value. Perpetrators of sex trafficking often target children believing their age makes them easier to manipulate and control. This crime is occurring in all types of communities throughout the U.S. and traffickers are making an alarming profit while victims endure abuse and violence. One of the most important things you can do to protect your child is to create an environment in which he or she feels comfortable talking with you as a trusted adult. For more information please visit, http://www.missingkids.com/theissues/trafficking.
