Pastor’s Message Rev. Msgr. Romulo Vergara, JCD

God’s word this week asks us not only to hear…but to listen. To pay attention. “To hear his voice” and “harden not our hearts.” To do that, we need to set aside what we want to say, and listen to what God wants us to hear.

In the first reading, Moses addressed the people of Isra-el and promised them a prophet – “To him shall you listen,” he said. And then, in Mark’s gospel, that prophet finally appeared. Jesus spoke in the syna-gogue, and people listened. But what was the first word he said? The first message Mark quoted? To a man tormented by “an unclean spirit,” Jesus said simply: “Quiet.”

For Jesus to do his work — for God to intervene, for a life to be healed, for a man to be freed from that “unclean spirit”– he needed first and foremost some-thing that we all find increasingly elusive.

Quiet. Stillness. Calm.

The fact is: to let God in, we need silence. And I think that means more than just the absence of sound. It’s also the absence of noise. The noise we make, and the noise that invades our lives.

It is unwanted noise to our lives. There’s the roar of anger. The hiss of gossip. The clattering of fear. It may be the insistent drumbeat of impatience, or pride, or greed. It may be the seductive music of sin.

We need to turn all that off — lower the volume of our all-too-human hungers and failings. Doing that, we can at last be able to listen to God. That is the “quiet” the troubled man in the gospel needed to embrace. And it’s one we need to seek, as well.

Silence. As the Holy Father wrote: “In silence, we are better able to listen to and understand ourselves; ideas come to birth and acquire depth; we understand with greater clarity what it is we want to say and what we expect from others; and we choose how to express our-selves. By remaining silent we allow the other person to speak, to express him or herself; and we avoid being tied simply to our own words and ideas.”

In this time when we cannot gather in the usual ways, we have been able to focus on our burgeoning virtual community. I am inspired by those who join us online from near and far, who are drawn to our community, and are eager to pray and worship with us. It is my sin-cere hope that this continues well into the future.

La palabra de Dios de esta semana nos pide no sólo que oigamos... sino que escuchemos. Que prestemos atención. "Que oigamos su voz" y "no endurezcamos nues-tro corazón". Para ello, tenemos que dejar de lado lo que queremos decir, y escuchar lo que Dios quiere que oigamos. En la primera lectura, Moisés se dirigió al pueblo de Israel y le prometió un profeta: "A él escucharéis", dijo. Y luego, en el evangelio de Marcos, ese profeta finalmente apareció. Jesús habló en la sinagoga y la gente le escuchó. Pero, ¿cuál fue la primera palabra que dijo? ¿El primer mensaje que cita Marcos? A un hombre atormentado por "un espíritu inmundo", Jesús le dijo simplemente: "Silencio". Para que Jesús hiciera su trabajo -para que Dios interviniera, para que una vida fuera curada, para que un hombre fuera liberado de ese "espíritu inmundo"- necesitaba ante todo algo que a todos nos resulta cada vez más esquivo. Silencio. La quietud. Calma. El hecho es: para dejar entrar a Dios, necesitamos si-lencio. Y creo que eso significa algo más que la ausencia de sonido. Es también la ausencia de ruido. El ruido que hace-mos, y el ruido que invade nuestras vidas. Es el ruido no deseado en nuestras vidas. Está el rugido de la ira. El siseo de los chismes. El estruendo del miedo. Puede ser el insistente golpe de tambor de la impaciencia, o del orgullo, o de la avaricia. Puede ser la música seductora del pecado. Tenemos que apagar todo eso, bajar el volumen de nuestras ansias y defectos demasiado humanos. Haciendo eso, po-demos por fin ser capaces de escuchar a Dios. Ese es el "silencio" que el hombre atribulado del Evangelio necesita-ba abrazar. Y es algo que nosotros también debemos bus-car. El silencio. Como escribió el Santo Padre: "En el silencio, somos más capaces de escucharnos y comprendernos a no-sotros mismos; las ideas nacen y adquieren profundidad; comprendemos con mayor claridad lo que queremos decir y lo que esperamos de los demás; y elegimos cómo expresar-nos. Al permanecer en silencio permitimos que la otra per-sona hable, que se exprese; y evitamos estar atados simple-mente a nuestras propias palabras e ideas". En este tiempo en que no podemos reunirnos de las formas habituales, hemos podido centrarnos en nuestra floreciente comunidad virtual. Me inspiran los que se unen a nosotros en línea desde cerca y desde lejos, que se sienten atraídos por nuestra comunidad, y están deseosos de rezar y adorar con nosotros. Espero sinceramente que esto continúe en el futuro. Gracias por seguir compartiendo vuestra fe y por formar parte de la comunidad de Nuestra Señora del Carmen.

St. Blasé was

born at Armenia

in the 4th centu-

ry. He was a

bishop and a

martyr. We in-

voke his inter-

cession especial-

ly for healings

of throat problems and illnesses be-

cause of an attributed healing of a boy

while St. Blase was on his way to the

prison.

For centuries, it has been a tradition

that a priest blesses the throats of the

faithful holding two candles while in-

voking the intercession of St. Blasé.

We will have a blessing of throats after the 8:15AM Mass on

February 3.

era conocido por obtener curaciones milagrosas

con su intercesión. Cierto día salvó a un niño que

se ahogaba por una espina de pescado que se le

había trabado en la garganta. De aquí la costum-

bre de bendecir las gargantas el día de su fiesta, 3

de febrero. Habrá bendición de garganta después

de la Misa de 8:15AM el Miércoles 3 de Febrero.

La Gran Promesa: Jesús promete la gracia de la peni-

tencia final, es decir, la salvación eterna, si comulgas

nueve primeros viernes de mes seguidos. Podrás es-

tar seguro de su compañía y protección en esta vida y

en la eternidad.

En aquel tiempo, se hallaba Jesús a

Cafarnaúm y el sábado siguiente fue

a la sinagoga y se puso a enseñar.

Los oyentes quedaron asombrados

de sus palabras, pues enseñaba co-

mo quien tiene autoridad y no como

los escribas.

Había en la sinagoga un hombre

poseído por un espíritu inmundo,

que se puso a gritar: “¿Qué quieres

tú con nosotros, Jesús de Nazaret?

¿Has venido a acabar con nosotros?

Ya sé quién eres: el Santo de Dios”.

Jesús le ordenó: “¡Cállate y sal de

él!” El espíritu inmundo, sacu-

diendo al hombre con violencia y

dando un alarido, salió de él. Todos

quedaron estupefactos y se

preguntaban: “¿Qué es esto? ¿Qué

nueva doctrina es ésta? Este hombre

tiene autoridad para mandar hasta a

los espíritus inmundos y lo

obedecen”. Y muy pronto se ex-

tendió su fama por toda Galilea.

Then they came to Capernaum,

and on the sabbath Jesus entered

the synagogue and taught.

The people were astonished at his

teaching, for he taught them as one

having authority and not as the

scribes. In their synagogue was a

man with an unclean spirit;

he cried out, “What have you to do

with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

Have you come to destroy us?

I know who you are—the Holy

One of God!” Jesus rebuked him

and said, “Quiet! Come out of

him!” The unclean spirit convulsed

him and with a loud cry came out

of him.

All were amazed and asked one an-

other, “What is this? A new teach-

ing with authority. He commands

even the unclean spirits and they

obey him.” His fame spread every-

where throughout the whole region

of Galilee.
