In this season of new beginnings, make a commitment to come back to the center, to have a
healthy spiritual life. Take a moment to evaluate your oneness with God. God does not seek
the proof of a healthy spiritual life in such circumstances as the number of times we went to
church or the amount of money we gave to charity or even the comforting words spoken to a
person in need. He goes deeper into ourselves, assuring us that these good gestures will
overflow from a healthy inner being. Ronald Rolheiser, writer and member of the Catholic
Theological Society of America, offers the following chart encouraging us to identify areas in
which our spiritual health is strong and where it needs attention.
Are we: Restless or Restful
Compulsive or Compassionate
Controlling or Responsible
Better or Understanding
Rigid or Open
Paranoid or Vulnerable
Cynical or Grateful
Competitive or Playful
Anxious or Prayerful
These are a few touchstones which enable us to get in touch with our inner being. They can
be the New Beginning of a New Year’s Resolution which can act as an entrance and add new
zest to our spiritual lives. When we are at one with ourselves and with God the
circumstances of our life flow freely from this center. A healthy spiritual life is not without
pain or struggle, but it is happy and challenging as it demands our participation not just on
New Year’s Day, but on each new day of 2016. This New Year’s may you discover God at the
core of your inner being. And may His presence add meaning and spiritual zest to the
ordinary circumstances of 2016.

Sunday Programs - 9:45 am - 10:45 am
Childcare services are available at the POP Nursery during Sunday morning programs. Resurrection and the Afterlife in the New Testament St. Monica Room Central to our Christian faith is a belief in the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Dr. Candida Moss, noted Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of Notre Dame, helps us understand the significance of that belief. On January 10, we will discuss The Heavenly Treasury. Facilitated by Sonya Phillips and Mike Brown.
Scripture in “Action” St. Elizabeth Room
Weekly gatherings discuss the current week’s readings and how the words of Scripture speak to us. Help share in gaining a better understanding of God’s message in Scripture as we discuss the Sunday readings, how they relate to us today, and seek ways to apply God’s message in our daily lives. Led by Tom & Elsbeth Germanson.
Religious Education “Let the Celebration Begin”
As Catholics, the one thing we do more than anything else is celebrate. Everything the Church does is centered around a
celebration. We celebrate life. We celebrate the changing seasons with the richness of the Church’s calendar. We celebrate
excellence by honoring as saints the heroes of our faith. We celebrate birth and eternal life with baptism and burial. We
celebrate truth, beauty, and goodness by seeking them out wherever they are to be found and honoring them in our
everyday lives. We celebrate Christmas and Easter. We celebrate pilgrimage – our common journey and our own individual
journeys. We celebrate salvation. We celebrate forgiveness with Reconciliation. We celebrate total dedication to the service
of God’s people with Holy Orders. We celebrate education. We celebrate communion with God and community with the
Mass. We celebrate unity by seeking to bridge the gap. We celebrate love with marriage. We celebrate……The spirit of
Catholicism is predominantly one of celebration, which is the genius and the fundamental orientation of our faith.
(Rediscover Catholicism – Matthew Kelly)

Stewardship: Parishioners Answering God’s Call
Recently a parishioner received a short video from her son’s kindergarten teacher. He was leading praise and worship at his school with a song he learned in Sunday School. Now his class has learned the song and dance moves to sing along with him. Music is a fun way to pass time at Sunday School but it's a way for kids to share Jesus! What you do for yourselves and your children on Sunday makes disciples!!! Please submit your stewardship story examples to [email protected]. They may be edited for space consideration.
Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19: 23-24) “Finding Renewal: Why the pro-life movement should return to its roots.”
James R. Kelly, America Magazine, February 16, 2009
James R. Kelly is professor emeritus of sociology at Fordham University in New York
The Consistent Life network is mostly invisible to popular opinion, because the principle of nonviolence
itself is neither recognized nor appreciated in American popular culture. Instances of particular protest
against particular wars will receive attention in the media, but not the fundamental principle of
pacifism—namely, the commitment to nonviolence. Indeed, no term and no principle is more alien to the
nation state, especially in its foreign affairs, than nonviolence. Groups committed to nonviolence must
mute and marginalize their radical principles in order to gain entry to the world of public opinion and
commentary. Even in the churches, the early and strong biblical traditions showing that Christ taught
nonviolence and his followers accepted it have been mostly marginalized.
