Our conviction to carry our cross is certainly challenging, yet a source of great consolation and joy to our Lord. For the Lord, who knows are deepest yearnings, hopes and desires, allows those crosses of ours that be- come so heavy to blossom into meaningful and fruitful blessings; blessings both here and now and blessings later in eternity. Sad is the reality that there are many people who simply choose to carry their cross alone. Fear and anxiety of actually trusting the Lord or someone else to share in their cross, to relieve some of their burdens, to help them on their way, is embar- rassing and at times simply paralyzing. No one enjoys the reality that their cross is hard to bear; it can be very personal and it makes us face parts of our lives that we would rather ignore. The reality is that no human life is without suffering. No human life is without a cross. Just ask anyone who has lost a loved one, has been threw a horrible tragedy, has lost his or her job or has low self-esteem. They can tell you what it means to carry a cross. Many of them can also tell you the blessings that came when they finally let go and allowed the Lord and others to help them carry their cross. The reality is, that for those of us who know Christ and trust those people God places in our lives, our friendships enable us to suffer with meaning, and even with joy. Let’s take a share in a neighbor’s cross, just as Christ has taken a share in ours.

SHARING IN OUR NEIGHBOR’S CROSS

Many who are reading this article have accepted Christ’s invitation to pick up their cross each day and follow him - if you hadn’t, you wouldn’t be reading this reflection. Our conviction to carry our cross is certainly challenging, yet a source of great consolation and joy to our Lord. For the Lord, who knows are deepest yearnings, hopes and desires, allows those crosses of ours that be-come so heavy to blossom into meaningful and fruitful blessings; blessings both here and now and blessings later in eternity. Sad is the reality that there are many people who simply choose to carry their cross alone. Fear and anxiety of actually trusting the Lord or someone else to share in their cross, to relieve some of their burdens, to help them on their way, is embar-rassing and at times simply paralyzing.

Stewardship Thought

Jesus tells the crowd that only those who renounce all of their possessions can be His disciples. Is He truly asking us to give up everything? Perhaps instead He is trying to help us see that everything we think we own is really a gift from God. Good stewards know that and strive to use those gifts accountably.

Please remember in your daily prayers the sick and suffer-ing of our parish family.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

September 4, 2016 Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

“If anyone comes to me without hating . . . father and mother, wife and

children, brothers and sisters, and even his

[or her] own life” (Luke 14:26). Hating? Can anyone imagine a less appropriate

Gospel for the Jubilee Year of Mercy? But scholars call this Semitic hyperbole. Jesus

exaggerates to jolt us into confronting life-changing chal-lenges. Faced with conflicting loyalties, disciples must reor-

der priorities, even relationships, to give Jesus and the gos-

pel’s demands first place. Today’s second reading presents a real-life example. Paul challenges his wealthy convert,

Philemon, to welcome back Philemon’s runaway slave, Onesimus, whom Paul has baptized in prison. Not only with

unconditional forgiveness but with a counter-cultural, world

-shattering change of status—as an equal. No, even more—a beloved brother in Christ. What in my life does the Jubi-

lee Year of Mercy challenge me to “hate”—meaning reform, redo, even utterly revamp—so I can give everyone, no con-

ditions, no exceptions, shockingly Christ-like love? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

FALL ADULT FAITH FORMATION SESSIONS

Being Catholic takes more than simply believing in God or doing what he asks of us. Jesus wants you to be more than just a believer—he wants you to be his disciple and friend. To help you answer this call to deeper friendship with Christ, St. Jude will begin Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John on Sunday, September 11 at 9:45 am. For more information contact Deacon John McGregor. You will not only benefit personally from being part of this sturdy; you will also help us to grow in fellowship as a parish as we grow closer in Christ together. Follow Me invites you to experience the joy of a renewed friendship with Christ. You will learn what it takes to follow him. You will experience the joy of divine friendship, and you will see how God—and only God—can satisfy the deepest desires of your heart. Participants of Follow Me will be able to purchase a workbook for $15 and will meet every week to view an engaging video presentation followed by a time of lively group discussion and fellowship. The eight 30-minute videos, presented by Dr. Edward Sri, will guide you through the Gospel of John. Dr. Sri will explain how Christ’s encounters with others in the Gospel are examples of how he lovingly and persistently calls each of us to a more intimate and life-changing relationship with him.

Theology of the Body for Teens – Middle School Edition Are you looking for a way to teach your pre-teen the Catholic approach

to chastity and morality? Theology of the Body for Teens: Middle School Edition is an exciting and dynamic program based on Pope John Paul II’s revo-lutionary Theology of the Body. This program will give students the answers and the tools they need to suc-cessfully and safely navigate through life. Using a great mix of stories, real-life examples, activi-ties, prayers, and references to the culture that teens understand, the Middle School Edition answers the questions middle school students have about their own bodies, issues on sexual morality, and how they were uniquely created for greatness. Our Junior High class will begin this program on Sunday, October 16 during the regular Sunday School hour. Parents are asked to attend a Parent Info Night, held on Wednesday, September 21 at 6:45pm in the Parish Hall to find out detailed information about the program. Additional information can by found by visit-ing www.TOBforTeens.com/Parents. Program descrip-tions, video clips, and samples from the Parent and Leader’s Guide are available to view and download. Contact Stacy Wolf in the office for more information.

Five Reasons for Controlling Your Tongue

Check out what James 3:1-12 has to say on this issue and think about the following reasons for being careful

about what you say to others.

1. A word spoken with the intent to injure is like a small fire that can set a huge forest ablaze, causing far more damage than we ever intended

2. Hurtful words can leave long lasting scars and broken relationships.

3. The tongue is like a small rudder on a large ship. A verbal insult is like a small adjustment to the rudder’s position, which can set the huge ship (our lives) on the wrong course and result in disastrous conse-quences.

4. The mouth is like a source of water from which springs either clean or contaminated water, not both.

5. Loving our neighbor and loving God demands that we control our tongues so we can speak healing words-words of affirmation, concern, reconciliation, and love.
