Dear Parishioners, Weddings are joyous occasions which express our desire for a full and happy life. The image of a wedding is frequently used throughout the Old Testament to describe God’s relationship with his chosen – Israel. Though often unfaithful, God always took her back, forgave her and turned her sadness into joy. As she awaited the coming of the Messiah, Israel’s hopes were expressed in terms of a wedding – a time of great rejoicing and celebration. Like abundant wine, God’s blessings would be poured out on his people in full measure. As we hear the account of the miracle at Cana, it is hard not to notice the shadow of the cross. Like all of Jesus’ signs and miracles, this points to the greatest of all his signs: when he will be lifted up in obedience to the Father, for the salvation of humanity. This will be how the new covenant- marriage between God and his people will be brought about. Here Jesus speaks about his hour – a reference to that time when his truest identity and glory will be revealed. Significantly also, Jesus’ mother is present at the wedding. In ad-dressing her as woman, a title he will also use from the cross, Jesus is referring back to another woman, through whom sin first entered the world. Here now, through this woman – Mary, his mother – the heal-ing of that sin will begin in her Son. For Christians, the cross is the ultimate blessing, as it is the source of eternal life. So, the 120-180 gallons of wine is indicative of the inex-haustible riches of God poured out on the faithful believer. Just as a wedding is a sign of who we are and what we hope for, so the mira-cle of Cana is a sign of what God offers us if we put our faith and trust in him. Through the death and resurrection of his Son, God offers us more than we could ever hope. In addition to the gifts of the Spirit as listed by Paul in Corinthians, God offers us the fullness of life and love. It is through faith that the water of our daily lives with all its challenges and achievements can be transformed into something far superior, full bodied and with a deep quality and bouquet. Through faith our lives gain a new depth and meaning if we simply do as Mary says: Do whatever Jesus tells you.

Notas del Párroco Queridos feligreses, Las bodas son ocasiones alegres que expresan nuestro deseo de una vida plena y feliz. La imagen de una boda se usa con frecuencia a lo largo del Antiguo Testa-mento para describir la re-lación de Dios con su elegido: Israel. Aunque a menudo Israel es infiel,

Dios siempre lo recibió de nuevo, lo perdonó y convirtió su tristeza en alegría. Mientras esperaba la venida del Mesías, las esperanzas de Israel se expresaron en términos de una boda, un momento de gran alegría y celebración. Co-mo vino en abundancia, las bendiciones de Dios se derrama-rían sobre su pueblo en toda su extensión. Al escuchar el relato del milagro en Caná, es difícil no notar la sombra de la cruz. Como todas las señales y mila-gros de Jesús, esto apunta a la mayor de todas sus señales: cuando será elevado en obediencia al Padre, para la sal-vación de la humanidad. Así será como se realizará la nueva alianza: el matrimonio entre Dios y su pueblo. Aquí Jesús habla sobre su hora, una referencia a ese momento en el que se revelará su verdadera identidad y gloria. También significativamente, la madre de Jesús está presente en la boda. Al dirigirse a ella como mujer, expresión que también usará desde la cruz, Jesús se refiere a otra mujer, a través de quien el pecado entró por primera vez en el mundo. Aquí, a través de esta mujer, María, su madre, la sana-ción de ese pecado comenzará en su Hijo. Para los cristianos, la cruz es la máxima bendición, ya que es la fuente de la vida eterna. Por lo tanto, los 120-180 galones de vino son indicativos de la inagotable riqueza de Dios derramada sobre el creyente fiel. Así como una boda es un signo de quiénes somos y lo que esperamos, así también el milagro de Caná es un signo de lo que Dios nos ofrece si ponemos nuestra fe y confianza en él. A través de la muerte y resurrección de su Hijo, Dios nos ofrece más de lo que jamás pudiésemos esperar. Ade-más de los dones del Espíritu enumerados por Pablo en Co-rintios, Dios nos ofrece la plenitud de la vida y el amor. Es a través de la fe que el agua de nuestra vida diaria con todos sus logros y desafíos se puede transformar en algo muy su-perior, con cuerpo, alta calidad y aroma profundo. A través de la fe, nuestras vidas adquieren una nueva profundidad y significado si simplemente hacemos lo que María dice: haz lo que Jesús te diga.

CELEBRATE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK WITH US | January 27-February 1 On Sunday, January 27, St. Clare School begins its celebration of Catholic Schools Week at the 9 A.M. Sunday Mass, fol-lowed by a delicious Pancake Breakfast in the Parish Hall. St. Clare School families will be serving pancakes, sausage, coffee, and juice. $5.00/child (age 12 or under) and $7.00/adult. (The crew will begin the Pancake Service after the 7:45 A.M. Mass.) After breakfast, please visit the St. Clare School Open House to learn more about the enriching curriculum and programs, visit the classrooms, and meet the welcoming staff. The Gospel reading for this Sunday is not only the first miracle in John’s Gospel—it is also John’s first mention of Jesus’ mother. I used to find it odd that he addressed her as “Woman.” But in that time the word was more respectful; it could even be affectionate. Je-sus does help as his mother requested, but he does so in a way that is a lesson about God’s love. You have probably heard how the Jewish people in Jesus’ time performed purification rituals before eat-ing anything. The cleansings were a sign that they wanted to be like God, completely free from sin. Even-tually, it came to mean that you could not approach God until you cleansed yourself. Jesus could have made the wine in bottles or wineskins. But he used the “six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial wash-ings” (John 2:6). That meant that once they were full of wine, no one could wash themselves from the jars. I wonder how many Pharisees flipped out when they saw that. The point of this is that no one can cleanse themselves. We don’t purify ourselves in order to come to God—we come to God to be purified. God is the only one who can make us holy. God offers this to sin-ners especially, because sinners who know they need forgiveness are the only ones to receive it. God never forces mercy on anyone. It is offered to those who ask for it. the amount of wine symbolizes the extent of God’s mercy. As there was now more than enough wine for the wedding, God has more than enough mer-cy for those who need it. Wine is also a symbol of joy in the Old Testament. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The cause of church unity is commended to Chris-tians for prayer and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture, spin off, and mutate into new ex-pressions, recent history shows some new points of con-vergence and agreement. Catholics are more firmly root-ed in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling resources, and people from various traditions are collaborating on projects. The call of this week is to be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in common. The old advice to “lighten up” is good medicine, because sometimes our differences are de-lightful and amusing. If someone says, “Let us pray,” a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe La costumbre del bautismo infantil debe ser mucho más que un acto social o una tradición cultural, donde el ro-pón y los regalos son más importantes que la doctrina cristiana, y los padrinos se escogen no por su buen ejemplo sino por su cuenta bancaria. Según los Hechos de los Apóstoles, familias enteras se bautizaban cuando el padre de familia decidía hacerse cristiano. Esta práctica de bautizar, no solo al nuevo cre-yente sino también a su mujer y a sus hijos, poco a po-co, quedó solo en bautizar los niños del original creyen-te. El mundo en aquel tiempo estaba basado sobre la familia, así como muchas culturas latinas de hoy. El bautizo infantil nació en la Iglesia primitiva y al pasar de los siglos llegó a transformarse en un rito religioso muy importante en la catequesis del nuevo cristiano. A Palavra de Deus é viva e ficaz sempre que acontece conversão nas pessoas. Ela torna-se viva para todos aqueles que A aplicam nas suas vidas, que não se ficam pelo mérito de A terem ouvido mas que pela transformação ques esta operou tranformou as suas vidas e deu a conhecer Deus aos outros pelo exemplo de vida; a evangelização na prática de dar vida ao quotidiano pelo exemplo de viver. É eficaz porque na Sua tranformação operante no espírito de cada um dá alegria e felecidade. Compreende-se Deus mesmo na dor e sofrimento. Entende-se o que ve, de Deus e o que vem do maligno, sente-se que temos o Espírito Santo e os seus sete dons a operar em nós. Tal como o povo que estava a ouvir Esdras a ler as escrituras que não fiquemos pelo que ouvimos os leitores e o sro. Padre falar na homilia, mas abrir o coração na escuta da Palavra e a aplicar nas obras ou feitos do dia a dia. O mundo se nos apresenta no diário com desafios extremamente difíceis que em muitos casos nos faz duvidar da eficácia da Palavra de Deus. Quando assim esta-mo-nos a fechar a entrada de Deus em nós. Não O deixamos operar pelo seu Espírito Santo no nosso interior, no nosso espírito. Sem os desafios e ios problemas que a vida nos tráz sem os pedirmos até pensamos menos em Deus. Quase que pensamos que nos podemos valer sem Ele e fica lá no baú de pensamentos e ideias caducadas. Por outro lado quando a Palavra é operante em nós sentimos a necessidade de nos comunicarmos com Deus: a oração é essa comunicação que nos aproxima de Deus. Essa proximidade nos dá a confiança necessária para O sentirmos muito presente em nós e desse modo o seu plano de amor com a humanidade tem o poder de transformar o mundo.
