Pastor’s Note

Dear Parishioners, Today, on Easter Sunday, we can again sing "Halleluiah" that we have not sung all through Lent. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad (Psalm 118:24). There is a lot of rejoicing going on. The question we might ask is: Why do we rejoice to-day? Well, we rejoice because our faith in Christ has been vindicated, truth has triumphed over falsity and justice over injustice. The story of the suffering and death of Jesus on Good Friday is the story of the triumph of falsity over truth, of injustice over justice, of evil over goodness. Jesus was falsely charged of crimes he did not commit, and unjustly sentenced to a death he did not deserve. His good friend betrayed him, his trusted companions desert-ed him and his number one man denied him. The people he loved demanded his crucifixion and chose to have the bandit Barabbas released in his place. It is a story of betrayal and lies, dishonesty and meanness, unfaith-fulness and wicked violence directed against an innocent and apparently helpless victim. All this comes to a head on Good Friday when we see Jesus scourged, mocked, led on the death march, nailed to the cross where he dies after a few hours and is hastily buried in a tomb. If that were the end of the story that would be a bad story; it would be a tragedy. But glory be to God it is not. Death is not the end of the story. There is one more chapter. This is the most important chapter because, as the saying goes, they who laugh last laugh best. And in the last chapter of the story of Jesus we see him rise from the dead in all glory and majesty. He is vindicat-ed. His enemies are shamed and confused. Jesus re-gains his eternal glory with the Father. He is the Lord, who will prevail over all humankind, his enemies included. For us -his embattled followers - this is good news. It is good news to know that truth is immortal. We can suppress Truth, accuse it of being a lie, condemn it,

torture it, kill it, bury it in the grave but on the third day Truth will rise again. True will always be true. Just will always be just. Right will always be right even when the world around us would have it otherwise. It is the end of the story that counts. That is why the church asks us today to rejoice and be glad. Even when we are going through very difficult times: through betrayal, unjust discrimination, lies, and misrepresenta-tions; even when the enemy seems to be winning the battle in our lives. Today Christ has won. And we know that in Christ we shall overcome. Halleluiah, Praise the Lord! And HAPPY EASTER TO ALL OF YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES. Fr. Tad

USCCB President Urges Support for Petition to Stop Christian Genocide

The president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bish-ops’ (USCCB), Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, issued an urgent call to support a petition to stop genocide in the Middle East and convince the U.S. Department of State to include Christians in any formal declaration of genocide. Excerpts from his statement read: “Today, the people of God must speak up for our brothers and sisters facing genocide in the Middle East. I urge every Catholic to sign the petition at www.stopthechristiangenocide.org...The very future of the ancient Christian presence in the Middle East is at stake. With each passing day, the roll of modern martyrs grows. While we rejoice in their ultimate victory over death through the power of Jesus’ love, we must also help our fellow Christians carry the Cross of persecution and, as much as possible, help relieve their suffering. By doing so, the Middle East and the world will be made safer for people of every faith to live in peace.

ADA Update As the 2016 Annual Diocesan Appeal comes to an end, thank you for your pledges and prayers. We continue to build “Rejoicing in God’s Mercy, Together in Christ” and this is evident through your support of the ADA and our parish. We have not only exceeded our diocesan goal but also have exceeded the parish goal. At the close of the active phase, we collected $111,267. This amount does not include the pledges/donations mailed directly to the diocese. We will let you know the final accounting in a future bulletin. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Fifty years or so ago, it was popular to teach that every Sunday is a “Little Easter.” Today, after several decades of intense liturgical reform, it is more proper to think of today as a “Big Sunday.”

On this Easter day, we are at our very best. We remember who God is, and we remem-ber who we are in God’s eyes: beloved sons

and daughters, reborn to eternal life in baptismal waters. We rekindle our candles and reclaim our baptismal promises.

As a “Big Sunday,” today also reflects the character of festivity and leisure that should mark every Lord’s Day. We wear “Sunday best” today, and we may take some time, especially in the northern states, to stroll through a budding garden. DRAWN INTO THE STORY “We are witnesses!” The scripture readings for Easter Sunday concentrate on details reported by eyewitnesses. Listen carefully and you will be drawn into the stories yourself. Peter reports the good works Jesus did, his death on the cross, and his resurrection. The passage from John’s Gospel has us running to the empty tomb with Peter and John and peering inside to see the cloths used to cover Jesus’ body. Psalm 118 sums up our response: “It is wonderful in our eyes!” What resurrection details do we see in our lives today? How have we died to our old lives and been raised up again with Jesus? Let us pay attention to the new life around us. It is wonderful in our eyes.

É o grito da victória de Jesus Cristo sobre a morte. Hoje é o dia em que Cristo se manifesta como vencedor da morte, é o dia em que também nós somos definitivamente retirados ao poder da morte. Os cristãos hoje celebram uma nova vida, uma nova existência. Quando professamos hoje o Credo na Santa Missa ao dizermos; “Creio no perdão dos pecados, na ressurreição dos mortos e na vida eterna”é com a convicção que Cristo venceu a morte e nesse processo justificou-nos perante o Pai e nos alcançou o perdão dos pecados e a vida eterna, fazendo-nos herdeiros do Reino. Esta é a Festa das Festas pelo qualse manifesta a alegria da vida e se estabelece a esperança de cada cristão na felecidade eterna concedida pelo próprio Jesus Cristo que nos abraçou desde o alto da Cruz (símbolo do pecado e do opróbrio) mas com a Sua Ressurreição nos arquitectou a nossa própria ressurreição. Juntemo-nos á alegria das mulheres, de Pedro e do “discípulo amigo” . Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe Hace casi dos mil años María Magdalena fue muy de maña-na al sepulcro de Jesús. Fue a rezar como muchos hacemos ante la tumba de un ser amado. Esa mañana ella se conver-tiría en apóstol de los apóstoles, primera testigo de Jesús resucitado de entre los muertos. Siglos después el testimo-nio de la Magdalena sigue siendo importante en la historia cristiana. Durante estos días en Anguiano, España, hombres y jóvenes de las viejas familias de la zona bailan y caminan con una pequeña imagen de la Magdalena. Se visten con camisas y faldones largos de muchos colores, mostrando la belleza de la diversidad hispana. Ellos bailan en honor de esa santa mujer de Magdala y lo hacen sobre andas de casi un metro de altura. Ellos toman la imagen desde la iglesia de su pueblo en las montañas en el norte del país y la llevan bailando por las calles empedradas bajando al santuario que han preparado para ella.
