THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Brothers and sisters: I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. "In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.

Today’s feast of the Body and Blood of the Lord commemorates the institution of the Eucharist and the Church’s constant belief in the real presence of Christ in Holy Communion. This feast is important because it challenges us to embrace the basics of our faith and also to understand what is unique and different about authentic and orthodox Catholicism.

The second reading for Mass today is taken from 1 Corinthians which was written in 50 or 51 AD, less than twenty years after the death and resurrection of Christ. St. Paul includes what is most certainly a liturgical text; the words of institution found in the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist. Already in the first days of the primitive Church there was a strong understanding that the celebration of the Eucharist is the central act, the highpoint, of the Church’s worship. St. Paul is clear; Jesus is truly present in this act of worship in a unique way. This was the faith of the Church at the time of St. Paul, it remains unchanged today.

Often people have difficulty believing in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, Holy Communion. Jesus speaks to this difficulty in the Gospel of John when he points out that many would leave him over his teaching that the Eucharist is truly his body and blood. It is easier to believe something else. Indeed, many have left the fellowship of Christ’s Church. In the 16th century Protestant “reformers” introduced the idea that the bread and wine of the Eucharist are only symbols of Christ intended to help us “remember Jesus.” Martin Luther, John Calvin, and John Knox falsely taught that there is no change of the elements at the consecration. This way of thinking remains popular today and even influences many Catholics. It is easier to believe that Jesus is not really present in the Sacred Host, but it is also easier to believe that Jesus didn’t rise from the dead or that he was not the Son of God or even that he didn’t exist! Faith is a decision; choose to believe or not to believe. Faith is not a feeling or emotion

But Jesus did rise, and he is truly present in the Eucharist. Jesus teaches it clearly: Take and eat, this is my Body; take and eat, this is my blood. Who will we believe, erroneous and false teachings from five hundred years ago or Christ himself? The feast of the Body and Blood of Christ was introduced in the Latin Rite Church in the 12th century—400 years before anyone thought of denying the Real Presence. Sometimes it is important to examine and come to a better understanding of the basics of the true faith.

¿A quiénes creeremos?
