FROM OUR PASTORAL COUNCIL

Dear Fellow Parishioners,We are busy preparing our report to the parish on progress made toward fulfilling the goals of our Pastoral Plan. The oversight of this plan is the primary responsibility of the Pastoral Council. The report will be forthcoming soon and while working on its compilation we found ourselves humbled and impressed with a few of the highlights of the past year in our parish community. We hope you will agree with our humble opinions when you review the list below that we have made tremendous strides in attracting more to leadership roles within our ministries and programs. Through many events, we have embraced social and spiritual opportunities and we continue to work hard together toward the dream of a new parish church.

• We have committed ourselves to enhanced music and liturgy with the hiring of a new director • 80 parishioners composed our Campaign Leadership Team resulting in pledges of $4.3 million • 341 people sought out a way to volunteer at the parish during our spring Ministry Fair• Our parish has a new and informative website- visit www.olphscv.org• 164 new spaces are available to park in for Mass and other events• Programs such as Landings and Kairos retreats are bringing Catholics “home” and to OLPH• Our 2013 Barbecue was very successful both financially and in building community• Our parish significantly helped the lives of students in Africa• Our ministries are active and vibrant with pancake breakfasts, Mother’s Day Dinners, scholarships, dinners for seniors and

donating to the poor and infirmed • We were kind to others during Lent with Acts of Kindness• We rocked God’s Kingdom and our youth with a tremendous Vacation Bible School program• We celebrated our Feast Day with a wonderful concert and night of prayer• We believe in helping those in need to heal with our new Annulment Ministry of HealingGod is blessing OLPH and we believe the parish is embracing its mission to offer love, prayer and hope. We would like to congratulate Monsignor Martini on the recognition awarded to him as one of top “51 Most Influential in the Santa Clarita Valley”! This is the second year that he has made this list. In addition to his sacramental ministry of baptisms, funerals, weddings, Mass and hospital calls; we thank him for his leadership of our Pastoral Plan and his endearing spirit, enthusiasm and love.Sincerely,Aurora Bertulfo, Ken Capozzi, Martha Chavarin, Dave Eichten, Maggie Goorsky, Griselda Hernandez, Todd Malynn, Jack O’Shea, Karen Ruballo and Margaret Shapiro

THE YEAR OF FAITHWhat is the purpose of having a Christian funeral?

In the Youth Catechism, also known as the YOUCAT, we read in number 278 that “A Christian funeral is a service performed by the Christian community for the benefit of

its dead. It expresses the sorrow of the survivors, yet it always has a Paschal character. Ultimately, we die in Christ so as to celebrate with him the feast of the Resurrection.” It also references paragraphs §1686-1690 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

During the funeral vigil, Mass, and burial, the faithful who survive the deceased pray for the deceased person; they pray for the forgiveness of sins and for the fulfillment of the promise of eternal life with God, first promised on the day of the deceased person’s baptism. They say the last farewell before the body or cremated remains are laid to rest in the ground, mausoleum, or buried (not scattered) at the bottom of the sea.

Remembering our Jewish roots, from the beginning of Christianity we have given special honor to the remains of the deceased through the practice of burials. In fact, burying the dead is one of the seven corporal works of mercy. Our respect for the body lies in our Christian belief that the body is a holy and precious creation of God. We, as human beings, are created as body and soul. When death occurs the soul leaves the body. Through the resurrection, God reunites body and soul in a glorified way.

Next week will by the last “Year of Faith” article and it will address the difference between Evangelization and Catechesis

SING A NEW SONG8:30 a.m. MassThe members of the newly formed, 8:30 Mass Music Ensemble can be seen on the front cover of this bulletin. It is an honor for me to work with this group of very dedicated singers and instrumentalists. This ensemble is, currently, rehearsing on Monday nights, from 6:15 - 8:15 in the Junipero Serra Conference room, in the Pastoral Center. We do have room for a couple more singers, particularly a bass or two and a percussionist. If you are interested, or know of someone who might be, please contact me to set up an audition. My contact information is below.10:00 a.m. MassAdditional singers, of all voices (SATB), are needed for the 10:00 choir. This choir is made up of wonderful, dedicated singers and has the potential of singing some of the great music of our church. In order for that to happen we really need to find a few more men who are willing to participate. If you are a singer, please consider participating in this great choir. Children's ChoirThe Children' s Choir will meet on Wednesdays, from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m., in the Junipero Serra Conference Room, in the Pastoral Center. The first meeting will be this coming Wednesday, October 23. This first meeting will be a time for me to get to know the singers. If you have, or are, a young person interested in singing please contact me and let me know. I know that this might be late notice for many of you; if so, please give me a call, or send an email, and we can set up an interview time that is more convenient.

Power PointI am looking for volunteers to run the Power Point presentations at the 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. Masses. I eventually hope to have the Power Point presentations at all the English speaking Masses. Thank YouThe Music Ministry wishes to extend a huge thank you to the Knights of Columbus for their generous donation of $2850 to be used to purchase sound equipment to improve the presentation of music from the front of the church. In the next few weeks you should hear an improvement. We are working very hard with the sound company to make the improvements needed. As you can see, we are making progress in Music Ministry, but have a long journey ahead. Thank you for your continuing support.

DID YOU KNOW?Be Aware of “Grooming” Behavior

Did you know that most child abuse occurs only after the perpetrator has gained the trust of the child and his or her parents and guardians through a process called

“grooming.” There are three elements of grooming behavior: physical, psychological, and community grooming. While the physical and psychological grooming are progressing with the child, the perpetrator is grooming the parents, guardians and the rest of the community. The purpose is to

convince us that this is someone who really cares about kids and is committed to their well-being so that we will not notice the warning signs or will disregard them because we can’t believe the perpetrator would commit such a crime. The process can take as little as a few days or as long as a few months, but the perpetrator is willing to be patient in an effort to gain the trust of everyone involved. This is how child molesters avoid being caught. For more information on child protection efforts and programs, call the Archdiocese’s Safeguard the Children Program Office, 213-637-7227.

PARISH MINISTRIES & ORGANIZATIONS

TODAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY! We are called to this Eucharistic Celebration — and invited

to “do good on earth,” to be missionary by putting our faith into action in support of the work of missionaries — like Sister Clara who rescues girls from human trafficking in India, giving them a loving home. Your prayers and generous gifts to the Society for the

Propagation of the Faith on World Mission Sunday support the tireless work of so many priests, religious and lay leaders around the world as they offer practical, emotional and spiritual care to communities, children and families in desperate need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of c i r c u m s t a n c e s . F o r m o r e i n f o r m a t i o n v i s i t : www.IAmAMissionary.org.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORTThe Knights of Columbus would like to thank everyone who joined them on the trip to the San Manuel Casino. Your participation helped raise $1,250 which was given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society to help those in need.

CONGRATULATIONS GIRL SCOUTSWe would like to congratulate the following Girl Scouts from our parish: Allison Hengst, Julia Hunt, Jessica Niazian, Erika Nikander, and Kiersten Phillips. These girls have completed the Marian Medal Program and will receive their Marian Medals at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on November 2nd.
