MUSIC AT THE BASILICA Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time The great Henry Erben pipe organ at the rear of the Basilica is in remarkably original condition. Something is only original once; it can't be duplicated. Time’s arrow points in one direction. One of the features of the organ that often intrigues visitors is the pump mechanism at the back of the organ. Since the organ was built before the age of electricity (1868), a person (called a "calcant") would turn this wheel as the organist played to supply air to the bellows. There even is a stop called a “bellows signal” which raised a flag by the wheel, presumably to wake up the poor calcant! A calcant was paid, but there weren't too many perks to the job. Later, an electric blower supplied wind to the organ, which is more reliable. However, the air isn't as good: the air produced by hand is much smoother than the turbulent air from a blower. These smooth sheets of air actually make the organ play and sound even better, are completely organic, and good exercise. Here is an excerpt of Oliver Wendell Holmes’ poem of eight verses praising the calcant, "The Organ Blower" (1872): DEVOUTEST of my Sunday friends, The patient Organ-blower bends; I see his figure sink and rise, (Forgive me, Heaven, my wandering eyes!) A moment lost, the next half seen, His head above the scanty screen, Still measuring out his deep salaams Through quavering hymns and panting psalms. No priest that prays in gilded stole, To save a rich man's mortgaged soul; No sister, fresh from holy vows, So humbly stoops, so meekly bows; His large obeisance puts to shame The proudest genuflecting dame, Whose Easter bonnet low descends With all the grace devotion lends... This many-diapasoned maze, Through which the breath of being strays, Whose music makes our earth divine, Has work for mortal hands like mine. My duty lies before me. Lo, The lever there! Take hold and blow! And He whose hand is on the keys Will play the tune as He shall please.

If you are expecting a new baby or if she/he is already here, be sure to let us know. Then go to our website and acquaint

yourself with what to do next to be prepared for the renewal of your own baptismal vows and the baptism

of your child. Next Session for parents and godparents is:

    Monday, July 11 at 7:00pm.

Want to know more about us? Come visit our website! www.oldcathedral.org

    • Our restored church bell resides in a small “tower” on the southwest corner of the church. Currently it rings on special occasions, i.e. after the late Sunday Masses or after wed-dings. The bell is a real bell (not electronic) but it rings in response to an electric signal that can be programmed for specific times of the day. We are thinking 9 AM, Noon and 6 PM Monday to Friday. Thoughts?

    • We are thinking of bringing our sheep back to the cemetery lawn in September, in time for the San Gennaro Feast. We know you miss them.

    UPDATES

The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral is honored, with the blessing of Cardinal Dolan, to have HOLY DOORS at its sister church, the

Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood for the duration of the Holy Year. With these Holy Doors open 24hrs a day, pilgrims passing through

them will benefit from indulgences and blessings. Pilgrims will reflect on the major theme of the Holy Year – the universal reach of God’s

mercy – by viewing a display of presepio, crafted in this city of Naples by La Scarabattola.

For those in a state of grace a plenary indulgence may be gained once day by passing through the Holy Doors. A plenary indulgence removes

    all punishment due to sin.

Those seeking the indulgence are encouraged to begin a pilgrimage at the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral. The pilgrim then may

proceed down to the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood where the Holy Doors of Mercy are located.

    The Holy Doors of Mercy

    Interested in Joining our Parish?

    WHAT ARE THE SYNOPTIC GOSPELS?

The Cardinals’ Appeal is an annual campaign to raise funds throughout the Archdiocese to support the wide array of services and programs that serve people in need.

During this year of Mercy, it is more important than ever to be actively aware of the needs of our brothers and sisters in need. The Cardinal’s Appeal addresses a wide range of human needs in neighborhoods of the Archdiocese. Many people and whole families are in crisis due to changes in economy as well as challenges that come to them through illness or accidents. In addition, the Cardinal’s Appeal assist in the education of youngsters and the care for older people who have become frail, including nuns and priests.

GOAL The Cardinal has asked our parish to raise $47,000. As of last Friday, we are at $37,255. This amount has been pledged by only 66 people! Next Sunday, you will be asked to participate in this important effort by making a gift of whatever amount you can afford. Keep in mind, that the responsibility to care for those in need is everybody’s job.

You can make a gift to the Cardinal’s Appeal by using a pledge card provided or by going to the website at www.cardinalsappeal.org. Don’t forget to use our designated number ( #94) when you make you gift.

    ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

Tuesday, June 14 from 7:00 - 7:30 PM Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral

Tuesday, June 14 from 7:30 to 8:30 PM Parish House ~ 263 Mulberry Street

As an introduction to studying the New Testament, this one session will discuss how the four Gospels came into being. The issues of Inspiration, Canonization, Authorship will be covered

as well as an overview of the how the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke came to be so similar and yet so different.

COMING IN THE FALL A three-session course called “An Introduction to the New Tes-tament”. Students will meet on one evening for three consecu-tive weeks (dates to be determined). The course will provide a

foundation for further exploration into the other parts of the Bible such as the Pentateuch, Prophets, Psalms, Gospels, Acts, Letters, Revelation. This three-session course will be repeated

three or four times during the year in order to attract newcomers to Bible study.

Meanwhile, there will be other courses on the Bible for people who have completed the “Introduction” or who have enough of a foundation to take mini-courses on the sections of the Bible

    mentioned in the paragraph above.

    BULLETIN NEWS – JUNE 11-12, 2016

SAINT ANTHONY’S FEAST DAY: Monday, June 13th is the Feast Day of Saint Anthony of Padua, one of the most beloved and well-known

saints throughout the world. Sincere thanks to Alex Catenaccio and the Catenaccio Family for their donation once

again of Saint Anthony bread. Bread was blessed and distributed after the 13th and final Novena Mass this past Tuesday; bread will also be

blessed and distributed on the feast day itself. Bread for both days was donated by Alex Catenaccio in memory of Anna Catenaccio, the

beloved mother of the late Frankie Cee, Vivian, Camille and Alex. RELIC FROM PADUA, ITALY: This Thursday, June 16th, the Fran-ciscan Friars invite you to join them in welcoming Saint Anthony of Pad-ua. St. Anthony is ‘visiting’ us in the form of a precious first-class relic from his Basilica in Padua, ITALY. Veneration begins at 11:30 AM and will continue throughout the day until approximately 8:00 PM. The Fran-ciscan way to venerate a holy relic is to make physical contact with the reliquary with a religious item such as rosary beads, medals, crosses, pray-er cards, even a photo of someone dear to you. There will be two Masses that day: 12:10 PM celebrated by Father Fabian Grifone, O.F.M. and 7:00 PM celebrated by Msgr. Donald Sakano. Father Paolo Floretta, a Francis-can O.F.M. who lives at the Basilica in Padua, will accompany the relic and will speak throughout the day on the life of Saint Anthony. There will be a table set up with a basket where you can leave your prayer peti-tions; these petitions will be taken to Padua, Italy, and placed at the tomb of Saint Anthony in the Basilica. Father Paolo shares this with us: “People can reach Jesus Christ through the intercession of saints. Saint Anthony is one of the signs we encounter on our road through life. Saint Anthony was a real person who still gives us direction today. Venerating his relic is a link of love between us and him.” The Saint Anthony Society of Giovinazzo’s statue will be in the church, as well, in honor of this visit. THANK YOU to Tom Muscatello for facilitating and coordinating this ‘visit’ from Saint Anthony of Padua. Tom was aware of MPB’s Saint Anthony of Giovinazzo Society in New York, and that was one of the deciding factors that led to the Italian society’s decision to put our church on their itinerary during their American tour. FATHER’S DAY: June 19th is Father’s Day. You will find Father’s Day cards in the sacristy. Please take one. The card is to be sent to whomever you choose. List the names of your beloved father, father-figure, uncle, etc. on the back of the outer envelope. Return the envelope, along with any donation you plan to give, to Jeanie Sama after Mass on June 11th or to the rectory before next Saturday so that your loved one’s name(s) can be placed on the altar in time for the vigil Mass on Saturday, June 18th. Of course, the cards and prayers are for all fathers, living or deceased. MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD SENIOR CLUB: The next MPB senior club luncheon will be on Tuesday, June 21st. Lunch will begin approximately at 1:00 PM, as usual.
