HOLY HOUR IS CANCELLED FOR THURSDAY, AUGUST 20

Message from Father Hinterschied

This week, we celebrate the feast of the second founder of the Cistercians, the Mellifluous Doctor, the apostle of the Crusades, the miracle-worker, the reconciler of kings, the leader of peoples, the counselor of popes, St. Bernard of Clairvaux!

For him, love is our greatest strength. God, who is love, created us out of love and out of love has redeemed us. The salvation of all human beings, consists in being in the love of God which was fully revealed to us in Christ Crucified and Risen. In His love, God heals us, raising us to union with Him, that is, to holiness.

Bernard warns us of the dangers of excessive activity whatever one's state in life, because, as he said to the Pope, many occupations frequently lead to "hardness of heart", "they are none other than suffering of spirit, loss of understanding, dispersion of grace."

In one of his famous discourses, St. Bernard compares Mary to the Star that navigators use to not lose their course: "Whoever you are who perceive yourself during this mortal existence to be drifting in treacherous waters at the mercy of the winds and the waves rather than walking on firm ground, turn your eyes not away from the splendor of this guiding star, unless you wish to be submerged by the storm!... Look at the star, call upon Mary.... With her for a guide, you will never go astray; ...under her protection, you have nothing to fear; if she walks before you, you will not grow weary; if she shows you favor you will reach the goal."

Please join us in praying the Holy Rosary together at school this Wednesday evening.

– Rev. Fr. Michael Hinterschied, Pastor, St. Patrick Church

The Queenship of Mary August 22Pope Pius XII established this feast in 1954, but Mary’s queenship has roots in Scripture. At the Annunciation, Gabriel announced that Mary’s Son would receive the throne of David and rule forever. At the Visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary “mother of my Lord.” As in all the mysteries of Mary’s life, she is closely associated with Jesus: Her queenship is a share in Jesus’ kingship. We can also recall that in the Old Testament the mother of the king has great influence in court. In the fourth century Saint Ephrem called Mary “Lady” and “Queen.” Later Church fathers and doctors continued to use the title. Hymns of the 11th to 13th centuries address Mary as queen: “Hail, Holy Queen,” “Hail, Queen of Heaven,” “Queen of Heaven.” The Dominican rosary and the Franciscan crown as well as numerous invocations in Mary’s litany celebrate her queenship. The feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption, and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast. In his 1954 encyclical To the Queen of Heaven, Pius XII points out that Mary deserves the title because she is Mother of God, because she is closely associated as the New Eve with Jesus’ redemptive work, because of her preeminent perfection, and because of her intercessory power.
