Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 15 ,2019

A Reflection From Father George . . . .

As many of you know I try to make it to the "Y" early each day. My routine is pretty much the same. Monday, Wednesday and Friday on the elliptical machine, and Tuesday and Thursday on the circuit, which is a series of machines and weights. The machine monitors how you perform your reps - and if you are going too fast it sounds a little alarm and these words pop up on the screen: TRY TO SLOW DOWN! Lately, I have been trying to slow down - not only on the machines but also, more importantly, in my life. In fact, when I think about the lessons I learned on my recent Camino, one of them is to slow down - and sometimes stop. It is amazing what we see when we slow down - we become aware of our surroundings and the beauty in our world that is often waiting to be discovered. It is amazing what we hear when we slow down - our ears open up to the sounds of nature and to the voices offering the word of encouragement or love that we need to have spoken to us in that moment. When we slow down we also find ourselves being drawn more deeply into the relationships that bless our lives. We become more attentive to one another, we encounter one another eye to eye, heart to heart. True, there are times when we need to get some place in a hurry - like me on the last day of the Camino racing to get to church for the pilgrim's Mass. But, maybe we can make that the exception rather than the norm. You might say I don't have enough time to slow down. If that's the case, you might try not to waste time as a good way to make time! It works for me! One of the fun things about having Carlos, Fr. Chris and Fr. Jader living at the rectory is that I get to fill them in on American expressions. Not too long ago I was explaining to Carlos what it means to stop and smell the flowers. And because there is nothing like experience to learn something, I took him over to the rose garden surrounding our shrine to the Good Shepherd. When we got there we stopped and I had him breathe deeply - I don't know about him, but for me the scent of the roses was a delight! As we head into all the activity that September brings into our lives I invite us all to breathe deeply, slow down and at times - stop. And with the eyes of your heart wide open see the presence of Christ in each person you meet and in the beauty of creation that surrounds us.

WEEKLY HOLY HOUR AND DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET This week we resume our weekly holy hour. The day has been changed to Fridays immediately after the Noon Mass. During the Holy Hour we will recite the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy and have some quiet time of reflection. All are welcome to share in this holy hour.

Stewardship

From Sunday, September 1 to Friday, October 4 (the feast day of St. Francis), Christians around the world will be celebrating the Season of Creation by praying and acting together to protect our common home. This is a time to join together to live the Catholic faith and to be good stewards of God’s creation. To love God, we must honor all that God has created. To love our neighbor requires us as Christians to preserve and protect all that sustains life. The theme of this year’s Season of Creation celebration is “The Web of Life.” Catholics are uniting with others in the Christian family to protect every creature in

God’s beautifully complex web of creation. For more information about how you can participate in the Season of Creation, please go to https://seasonofcreation.org/

2019 BISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL

"For I Was Hungry . . . " The 2019 Bishop's Annual Appeal is officially kicking-off this weekend. The theme of this year's Appeal is "For I Was Hungry . . . " It is a reminder that what we do for our neighbors in need, we do for Christ himself. Please support this important annual cause that helps so many of our brothers and sisters in our Diocese. The Bishop's Annual Appeal supports the work of our Catholic Charities, priests' extraordinary healthcare needs as well as Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests' retirement residence, urban elementary schools and seminarian education. These are all critically important ministries that touch many lives, and so please make a pledge today. Please know that funds from the Appeal are used only for the causes described in the campaign materials. They are used for no other purpose. Thank you in advance for your generous support!

REFASHIONING AND REBUILDING THE 9 AM SUNDAY LITURGY

I am happy to announce that beginning the weekend of October 5 and 6 we will introduce a new way of worshipping together at our Sunday 9:00 a.m. Mass. In response to input we received last Fall from our parish survey, Expanding our Vision, we have refashioned and rebuilt the 9:00 a.m. celebration of liturgy to respond more effectively to the great number of young families that attend that Mass along with all the other parishioners who choose that liturgy for their Sunday worship. Our ultimate goal is to facilitate an authentic

encounter with Jesus Christ that is accessible to both children and adults. If you are interested in serving as a welcomer please contact Denise Stefanelli. We also welcome any new musicians to share their talents with the community - please speak with Barbara Armenti if interested. We hope that all who attend the 9:00 a.m. Liturgy will find their experience of worship deepened by this new approach. As always feel free to contact me with any questions, ideas or concern. For more details, please check our website at www.svmnj.org.

Stewardship Opportunities

Generosity is a Scriptural concept, which refers to giving without expectations in return.

God is generous with His grace, so we should be generous toward each other and be thankful.

(2 Corinthians 9: 6 – 7)

An attitude of generosity allows us to give to others because God has given abundantly to us. At St. Vincent Parish,

stewardship and helping those in need, is an important part of how we live out our mission, but we understand that you

cannot support each need. Parishioners have asked for a calendar of “asks” for the year so that they can discern their

level of involvement. Below is a list of the organizations/drives we support by month throughout the year so that you

can prayerfully discern to whom you will give.
