SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Friends of Holy Spirit, It is cloudy as I write this letterAplease, God, let it rain. As I drove to St. Meinrad yesterday I saw corn fields that would make a person cry. Keep our farmers in

your prayers. My Alumni Reunion at St. Meinrad was good and I en-joyed connecting in with classmates from across the coun-try. If you have not had the chance to visit St. Meinrad, I would certainly encourage a trip. It is located in southern Indiana, about a three hour drive from Indianapolis. There is a comfortable guesthouse where overnight accommoda-tions can be reserved and tours are available daily. While the seminary is located there (both I and Fr. Chris were edu-cated at St. Meinrad), it is primarily a Benedictine Monas-tery which began almost 160 years ago. It is a prayerful, peaceful and beautiful place. Give it a try. Each month Fr. Chris and I say Mass for the Missionary Sisters of Charity. This is the community formed by Mother Teresa of Calcutta and who now serve around the world. At present time there are five sisters of this community on the near eastside (10th and Rural) serving homeless women. They are women of deep faith, simplicity and commitment. I speak of these communities because we can some-times forget that examples of faith and Christian service that are in our midst. Yesterday, I had the funeral of Jean Adrian who has been a member of Holy Spirit for over 60 yearsAanother example of tremendous faith and Christian service in our midst. I draw strength from these people and I hope you do also. ,

NEW QUESTION/ANSWER FEATURE Dear Friends of Holy Spirit: As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance communication and education in the parish, we are beginning a “Question Box” as part of the bulletin and encouraging parishioners to submit ques-tions that could be answered. Some of these will be answered by myself, or another person if that seems more appropriate. We are starting this series by presenting a case study on a way to support the parish through “estate planning.” In the future a broad range of questions will be answered. “Dorothy had been employed as a civil service secretary for the federal government for 35 years. She never married and her only brother died leaving no children. Her pastor at the time often referred to Dorothy as “the last branch on the tree.” She thought the phrase was both amusing and de-scriptive. As time passed, Dorothy began to fail in health. Eventually, she began to lose her independence and sought assistance from her parish. Dorothy wanted to continue celebrating the Holy Eucharist, so arrangements were made to bring her the Body of Christ. She enjoyed caring visits from parishioners and friends. After a period of discernment, Dorothy decided that she wanted to leave her financial resources to her parish. She hired an attorney and discussed her wish to set up an en-dowment to provide tuition assistance for children at the parish school. Even though Dorothy did not have children or nieces and nephews, she wanted children to have the op-portunity to reach their dreams through a values-based, faith-filled Catholic education. When asked about a name for the endowment she refused to allow it to be in her name. Yet, when it was suggested that the family name could live on through the endowment, she was pleased that her family would continue to be remembered. Dorothy died at the age of 95. And the endowment fund in her name was established shortly thereafter to provide tui-tion assistance to families who wish to have a child attend Catholic School but cannot afford to pay the entire cost. Dorothy delighted in knowing that her dream of providing tuition assistance for children would become a reality.” Fr. Paul

if you have a question that you would like Fr. Paul to answer,

please send it to [email protected].

Catholic Charities News Economic stressors here in Indiana can bring about a “storm” in the lives of many Hoosiers – most notably the lives of our children. Sometimes a single storm in a family such as the loss of a job can put that family on the streets and other times storms combine, such as a job loss and a health crisis or an addiction, the death of a family mem-ber or a prison sentence to cause as much destruction as a tornado. Most of us have the resources to weather many of the storms that come our way - we have family and friends, perhaps a savings account, good health insurance, a good education or the skills to find a new job quickly. For many of our neighbors in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, they suffer from a lack of resources of every kind. What a blessing it is for the over 150,000 people that find their way to Catholic Charities every year to gain the re-sources that they need to get through their personal storms. Thanks to you, our supporters, staff and volun-teers who make it possible for so many to find a refuge – creating a forecast for HOPE!
