June 14th, 2020 The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi)

Bishop Arthur Serratelli, Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese of Paterson, has announced the REOPENING OF THE CHURCHES AND THE RESUMPTION OF THE CELEBRATION OF THE SACRED LITURGY BEGINNING JUNE 13-14. The bishop reminds us that we must do so in compliance with the protocols established to ensure public safety. As we welcome you back to church for the celebration of the holy mass and resumption of our sacramental life, please note the following: IF YOU ARE SICK - STAY HOME; the obligation to attend Sunday mass has been suspended until further notice by the apostolic administrator; live-streaming the daily mass and Sunday mass will continue, FACIAL MASKS AND SOCIAL DISTANCING MUST BE OBSERVED. MASS SCHEDULE FOR NEXT WEEKEND WILL BE PUBLISHED ON OUR WEBSITE AND BY FLOCKNOTE EMAIL

OR TEXT MESSAGE. DAILY MASS: MONDAY-THURSDAY AT 10AM

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, traditionally known by its Latin title, Corpus Christi. It is an occasion every year to remember especially what a great gift Jesus left us in the Holy Eucharist – the abiding sign of His Redemption and His Presence among us. Today we celebrate the gift of Jesus in the Eucharist. The bread and wine become for us the body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus.

We all want to meet Jesus. We want to have a closer friendship with Jesus. We want to have more of Jesus in our lives. We have to come to the right place, to the Eucharist. The best place to meet Jesus is in the Eucharist. If we want to be intimate with Jesus he tells us how: Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood

remains in me and I in him. (John 6:56). Our most intimate moment with Jesus is when we receive Jesus in Holy Communion. We receive Jesus into our very bodies. We could not be closer with Jesus. We are one. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. (John 6:56).

I know that some find it difficult to believe that bread and wine change into the Body and Blood of Jesus. I can understand your doubts. We don’t see any change in the bread or wine. There is no difference in the taste; the bread still tastes like bread and the wine still tastes like wine. It is going against logic to say that the bread and wine change into the Body and Blood of Jesus despite no change in appearance. With our intellect we can understand that God must be keeping the universe together, that God is the origin of everything, but reason will only take us so far. Then we need to add faith to our reason and intellect.

As Paul says, in the Christian life we go by faith and not by sight (2 Cor 5:7). We need to be humble and open to God performing a miracle every day in this church, the miracle of the Eucharist. Can you be humble enough to add faith to your intellect and reason, to admit that intellect by itself does not provide all the answers, and that God

can perform miracles every day making it possible for bread and wine to become the Body and Blood of Jesus while keeping the same appearance? Can you add faith to your intellect? When you submit to God you will not lose anything, you will gain everything. There is a beautiful chant, “Trust, surrender, believe, receive.” Add faith to your reasoning and receive the love of God for you! The Eucharist is the gift of God’s love for you. For a very long time we were separated from the EUCHARIST because of the present pandemic. Thank God we are coming back to the Sacraments and Eucharist.

May Jesus in the Eucharist always be the very center and heart of our church, the center and heart of our faith, the center and heart of our parish, and the center and heart of the lives of each of us. O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine, All praise and all thanksgiving Be every moment thine.

FROM A LETTER ON THE EUCHARIST (ECCLESIA DE EUCHARISTIA) – JOHN PAUL II (2003):

The Eucharist is at the center of the Church (§3). The Church was born at Pentecost but a decisive moment in the shaping of the Church was the institution of the Eucharist in the Upper Room during the Last Supper (§5). What more could Jesus have done for us? In the Eucharist Jesus shows a love which goes to the end and knows no measure (§11). Our relationship with Christ begins at baptism and is strengthened by the Eucharist (§22). Whenever Mass is celebrated we are led back in spirit to Calvary (§4). The Mass makes present the sacrifice of the Cross, it does not add to it or multiply it but makes Christ’s sacrifice present in time. The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice (§12). We talk of the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist because Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist is a presence in the fullest sense, where Jesus is wholly and entirely present. The consecration at Mass changes the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ and the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood and the Church calls this change transubstantiation (§15).

CORPUS CHRISTI FOOD COLLECTION FOR THE POOR

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted those living in poverty the most and Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson's 3 Food Pantries (Father English Center, Paterson; Hope House, Dover; and Partnership for Social Services, Franklin) are giving out more food than ever before. Most months, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson gives out food to 5,000 - 7,000 people at their 3 food pantries. In April of 2020, this number practically doubled, as they helped over 11,000 individuals who are feeling the direct economic impact of COVID-19. Bishop Serratelli has authorized a Catholic Charities Diocesan-wide food collection in all parishes. This year, the drive has gone virtual, and you can shop online and have items directly shipped to Catholic Charities Food Pantries. Visit www.ccpaterson.org/corpus for more information and visit www.yougivegoods.com/ccpaterson-fooddrive2020 to find our parish, and shop for our pantries in need.

You may also email: [email protected] or call (973) 737-2077 ext.403 with any questions or to donate food directly to Catholic Charities Food Pantries.

.PRAY DAILY.

.PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR PROTECTION AND HELP. O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You…know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of those of us who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
