Be still and know that I am God. Silence is sacred. Silence speaks the language of the soul and is the foundation of all life and eternity itself. Silence takes us beyond the limits of our minds and allows us to seek and to love the essence of all love, perfect love, and being. In silence, we can be non-verbally present to things and to God in ways that words cannot accomplish. We can discover, encounter, and be present to truths that our minds struggle to conceive and then set aside the boxes we put around things when comprehending them is challenging. We can know the unknowable and touch eternity when we encounter the core silence in our souls. We can do this even on a noisy street and in the midst of the greatest distraction. Once we have made friends with silence, the rambling noise of the world no longer seems to matter, and we can carry a deep forgiving peace within us, even when physical silence cannot be found. We know that we are loved, cared for, sustained, nourished, embraced, and carried. There is nothing to fear in silence, and I can be present to myself in the same way that God is present to me. I can see myself as God sees me. All of my faults, weaknesses, imperfections, failings, and sinfulness melt away in the abundance of God’s mercy. All of the worldly things we see as being important no longer are. It is in silence that all of the barriers that divide us disappear. There is no more “yours” and “mine” but only the oneness of “ours.” There is no longer a need to “figure things out,” and we tap into our desire to simply let things be. Silence is creative and powerful and gives us hope. Silence is God’s greatest blessing. God became one with humanity in silence. It allows us to be one with all of creation, with the moon and the stars and all of the creatures God has made. The smallest particle of creation radiates with beauty. Silence allows us to soar beyond ourselves and connect in ways that the mind can only imagine. When all is quiet, we begin to see that it is only our fear that keeps us from the Lord. It is our fear that causes us to sink and to fail. We can hear the gentle whisper that tells us to reach for God’s hand. We discover that we yearn for the salvation and wholeness that only God can give to us. Be still my soul and be at peace.

Sister Mary Katherine Skrabec who was known as Sister Mary David Ann when she taught at St. Justin’s in the late 1970’s. Sister Katie, as we knew her, was a delightful, funny, and fun-loving person before illness began stealing her memory some years ago. We trust she is now rejoicing in God’s presence.

She joins another former SJM teacher, Sr.

Alicemarie who went home to God just

Dear Parishioners, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid”

Fighting the wind and waves and then this scary sight of Jesus walking on the turbulent sea – no wonder Peter and the disciples cry out in fear. What is going on? How are we going to get out of this mess? Where is God when we really need him?

Jesus comes to us today as he did to those disciples. He asks us not to look first at the wind and waves but to look first to him. We see Peter and he is us, brave at first and overwhelmed again but calling out and grasping the hand Jesus stretches out to him. We disciples are on our journey with the Lord. He is with us in the boat. The winds and the waves will die down. Keep looking to the Lord.

We are celebrating Mass and confessions regularly. This Sunday two children will come to the Table of the Lord at their First Communion. Parents are bringing their children for Baptism. Next weekend at a special 1pm Mass we will welcome our elect and candidates into full communion with the Church. Engaged couples are preparing for marriage. Those who have lost loved ones are blessed in the funeral prayers of the Church. We look forward to celebration Confirmation in September. Schools and our Parish School of Religion are preparing for the new year. Helping Hands, through your generosity, raises up many who are burdened. St. Justin Martyr Parish is alive as the Body of Christ today.

The church renovation is moving closer to completion. The Church Renovation Raffle is off to a very good start. If you missed the Lenten Fish Fry, we have good news. On Friday, August 28 we will have a take-out only Summer Fish Fry, details in the bulletin.

Thank you for your enduring support for our parish and all the people we serve. Peace, Fr Kevin

Hello everyone, we keep in touch with Fr. John and we

thought he should say “hello”. He wrote this a little

while ago.

Hi, Brothers and Sisters of St. Justin,

I am Fr. John Jeong ordained to the priesthood last year. It is quite strange to call myself ‘Father’ to you because I was a seminarian kid (?) when I stayed at St. Justin with Fr. Kevin. That year was awesome. I not only had great time with you but also our Cavs won the championship. I still keep that year’s Cavs champion T-shirt in my closet and a picture I took in St. Justin playground as my Facebook profile.

I heard our kind, talented and handsome seminarians, Fabian and Joseph also had a wonderful time with all of you last summer. Fr. Kevin was already great Korean speaker because of me, but maybe he learned to speak Vietnamese thanks to Joseph. Although I had to learn the English alphabet again to write this short letter, I believe that smart and bright Fr. Kevin can still speak Korean (or not). Father Kevin admits: not.

I know many of you worry about me because I live in Korea which is quite close to China where this pandemic broke out first. Yes, we also closed many stores, cancelled planes, and even stopped public Masses, but we began public Masses in May.

Many things we lost, but many things returned. That is happy. But many things can’t come back nowadays. No Sunday school, no children laughing, and no prayer groups who are passionate only for God. I cannot say it is not tough time for all of us, but I try to stay hopeful.

Because my pastor, Fr. Peter, takes care of many senior and adult groups, I take children and young adult groups. I send short articles to the first communion group and 90 Sunday school kids every week and I receive answers from five or six children. Some say it is not good number, but I believe that is enough for God to smile and Church’s future. They will never forget God because they didn’t even in this pandemic. Sometimes I forget to pray at night, but I listen to my young adult group’s night prayers on the Internet every night. They still keep their hope in God and I am so happy for it.

We will face many sufferings and burdens we haven’t experienced before. The ‘numbers’ in Church will decrease, that is a future we cannot avoid. But our Church’s hope cannot be found in numbers, as you know. As our God gave His disciples hope through His death, as our small numbers of martyrs conquered whole Roman empire through their blood and tears, we will find hope in God whenever, wherever we are. I will pray for all of you, St. Justin! Stay safe and enjoy the wonderful grace of God!

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults—RCIA Becoming Catholic We are blessed with several people preparing to receive Initiation Sacraments this year. Plans are to have Initiations on Sunday, August 16 at 1:00 p.m. Morgyn McCalligan will be completing her full initiation as a Catholic by receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Tim Rosian and Phillip Bowser will make their Profession of Faith, be received into the Church, and participate in the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Kaylee Datz will receive all three Sacraments of Initiation; Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. And four members of the Argenti Family will become Catholics through the Sacraments of Initiation: Lynn, Elizabeth, Caitlin and Cecelia. Please pray for and encourage all those preparing to be fully united with Christ and His Church. PSR Parish School of Religion We are currently planning for PSR in the fall. We are hoping to offer multiple options for parents and their children. Options will include in-person classes and home-schooling with on-line assistance. We will have instruction in conjunction with Willoughby-Eastlake School System. Registration will be online and at no cost to St. Justin Martyr parishioners. Please look forward to continuing updates and contact the Religious Education Office at 440-946-

3287 with any questions. Pre-Baptism Class A class preparing parents for the baptism of their child will take place on Wednesday, September 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the school’s ATR room. This

class is required for parents having a child baptized for the first time. Participants are required to wear a face covering. The classroom will be sanitized beforehand and arranged for social distancing. Please call the parish office to register (440) 946-1177.
