Mass Intentions for February 14 through February 21, 2021

6
Health of the Sick, pray for us! This weekend we honor Our Lady of Lourdes by administering the Sacrament of the Sick at all the Masses. February, the Month of Our Lord’s Passion is also the month of the healing power of Jesus Christ. Last week was the feast of the martyr- bishop St. Blaise with the blessing of the throat, using the sacramental of holy candles in the form of the Cross, and the exorcism prayer for deliverance from all sickness and every other evil. Today we recall the miraculous spring given to us by the Immaculate Conception through her humble servant, St. Bernadette Soubirous, for the healing of the sick. The blessing and sprinkling of holy water, mixed with Lourdes water from the spring, precedes the administration of a holy Sacrament instituted by Jesus Christ Himself when he lived on earth: The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Who may receive this Sacrament today? Anyone who suffers chronic or serious illness, or who experiences the weakness of body or mind due to age or sickness, or anyone facing surgery or is recovering from surgery may receive this Sacrament. Because this Sacrament is for healing and the forgiveness of sins (venial sins), the anointing is not for the healthy or the small children who have not yet attained the use of reason. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick must also be received in the state of grace because it is a Sacrament of the living. If anyone is conscious of mortal sin, the Sacrament of Penance must be received first to avoid sacrilege. (There are only two sacraments of the dead: Baptism and Penance. These sacraments can be received in the state of mortal sin.) Pain and suffering are evils, which were not part of God’s original plan for Adam and Eve. These evils entered the human condition through the original sin of our first parents and the machinations of Satan. God does not directly will evil, but He permits it in order to bring forth a greater good like the purification of the soul. Suffering, united to the Sacred Passion of Jesus Christ and His Holy Cross, atones for sins and sanctifies souls for eternal life. In the Gospel today “A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged Him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, He stretched out His hand, touched him, and said to him. “I do will it. Be made clean.” The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.” (Mark 1:40, 41) Everyone receives healing from Jesus who receives the Sacrament of the Anointing with faith and the proper dispositions. The first effect of the Sacrament is the healing of the soul through the forgiveness of sins. This is the greatest healing. The second effect is the strengthening of the will to resist temptation and unite the soul more intimately with Jesus Christ. The third effect is the immediate preparation for death and the passage of the soul to God and His just judgments. When a souls receives Extreme Unction with perfect contrition and resignation to God’s Holy Will, accepting death as a just punishment for sin, and saying the Holy Name of Jesus, that soul goes straight to heaven like the Good Thief on Calvary and avoids Purgatory.

Thank You

I can’t emphasize enough the supreme importance of calling a priest to give this Sacrament while the dying person is fully conscious and aware. This gives the dying the opportunity to confess their sins, to enter fully into the prayer and rituals of the Anointing, to form the proper disposition of true sorrow and resignation to God’s Will, and to receive Holy Viaticum, the last Holy Communion on earth, as Food for the journey. I always impart the Apostolic Blessing for the full pardon and remission of sin and punishment (a tremendous grace!), and I invest the dying person in the holy Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and enroll them in the Carmelite confraternity of the Scapular so that they may receive the promise of Our Lady to St. Simon Stock: “Anyone who dies clothed in the garment, shall not suffer eternal fire.” These are truly holy deaths! But, there is a fourth effect of the Sacrament of the Anointing: the recovery of physical health and strength. This happens very frequently; even miraculous healings from cancer and other catastrophic illnesses. I have witnessed the cancellation of surgeries because cancerous tumors have disappeared. I have seen paralyzed limbs restored to full use, and people on their death beds miraculously brought back to full health. All of this due to the divine power of Jesus Christ in this holy Sacrament. I have been to Lourdes several times, and have witnessed many miracles of healing. The great-est miracles took place in the Reconciliation Chapel where sinners confessed and received absolution. Repentance and conversion are the greatest miracles. Most of the physical healings took place, not in the miraculous spring, but during the Eucharistic Procession and the Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Jesus is still here among us in the Flesh, and is still healing us by the power of divine grace! This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the holy season of penance, fasting and prayer. Come and receive the blessed ashes in the form of the Holy Cross as a beautiful sign of contrition and penance. Receive the Sacrament of Confession and the Most Holy Eucharist to be strengthened by Jesus Christ Himself to prepare worthily for His Resurrection. And observe the fast of the Church. Ash Wednesday is a day of Fast and Abstinence which means only one meal is allowed. If necessary, one may take food at two other times of the day to maintain strength; but this food together must not equal another meal. All the Fridays of Lent are meatless with no eating between meals. Enter into the spirit of Our Lord in the wilderness who ate no food for forty days and forty nights, and heed His warning in the Gospel:

“Unless you do penance, you shall likewise perish!”

This week, too, we begin the 33-day preparation for the Consecration to St. Joseph on March 19. Every

morning during the Holy Hour we will read the meditation on St. Joseph and recite the Litany of St.

Joseph. This is a beautiful way to pass the Lenten Season in His blessed company! I am offering this

sacred time in honor of St. Joseph for the bishops of the Church, that they may have the spirit of all the

martyr- bishops of the Church like St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. Stanislaus of Krakow, and St. John Fisher.

May St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, obtain courage and fortitude for all the Shepherds of

the flock, our bishops.

God love you,

Father John
