From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers In my recent homily for the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, I called to mind the triple iden-tity of our common baptism in Christ – Priest, Prophet, and King. I also elaborated once again upon our baptismal call to be disciples and missionaries – witnesses of Jesus Christ in the midst of the world. How can we grow in this identity and calling? A good place to start can be found in the evangelical councils: Simplicity of Life, Chastity, and Obedience. They are called “evangelical councils” because they come to us through the mouth of the Lord in the Gospels. They are qualities beyond the basics necessary for those who wish to do more, to follow more fully. They are postures that can help create openness within us for growth in the Lord. While most commonly associated with the vows of religious life, they have some-thing to say to all the baptized. Let us begin with simplicity of life.

Religious priests, brothers, and sisters usually take a vow of poverty. The laity and diocesan clergy do not. In the broader sense of “Simplicity of Life,” however, this council can be helpful to all. Simplicity of Life in its strictest sense relates to material possessions. It is a pinching limitation in the possession of things necessary for human comfort and life. It has two essential features: in regard to actual possessions, it imports a lack; in regard to future possessions, it means insecurity. Poverty is the first of the beatitudes: it reminds us that we need and that our needs can be met only in the person of Christ. In itself, poverty is an evil; in religious life it is taken to free one from the natural inclination to possess material things as one’s own or to use as one’s own, in order that one may have God as his greatest possession. Having possessions is not bad. To live Simplicity of Life in the midst of the world is not the same as a religious vow of poverty. How attached am I to my possessions, though? Do I define myself by what I have? Is maintaining my status and showing it off controlling my way of life and relationship? Am I free before my possession to humbly recognize my need for God and place Him at the center of my life? Simplicity of Life from this perspective gives one a freedom from possessions and opens one to recognize a relationship of need before God, being docile before His will.

Another way of applying Simplicity of Life is to raise the questions “what complicates my life unnecessarily?” Those who are strong-willed or willful, rather than docile before the will of God, often complicate their lives unnecessarily, worrying about things beyond them, placing themselves in the midst of problems that are not theirs to solve, controlling family and friends rather than loving them. The practice of Simplicity of Life guides a person to review this willful pos-ture, search for its deeper origins, and work to seek healing and change. Such growth toward freedom often exhibits itself in the ability to listen more and develop empathy, it curbs impatience and strengthens one to resist the urge to con-trol everything, and it helps one to get in touch with one’s emotional base, allowing one to be more understanding of the emotions of others. There is great freedom in this application of simplicity.

In some ways, the question of whether a person can enter into simplicity of life or not is one of trust verses control and hope verses fear. God calls us to trust in Him. The need to control – possessions and relationships – shows a lack of trust in the present moment, which is a basic element necessary for growth in the spiritual life. Fear shows a lack of hope that I am in the hands of One Who will guide me toward a future that is good – and hope is also a basic element of growth in the spiritual life. Simplicity of life assists us in growing in faith, hope, and trust. When I know that I am in Christ, I want for nothing. I have certainty of His presence in the present. Hope expands the certainty of faith in the present encounter to a certainty for the future. Through hope, faith becomes trust. And in that trust, I can let go and be free. To trust is to entrust oneself to another, in this case God. To believe that “Deus Providebit – God will provide.”

Fr. Luigi Guissani says that simplicity of life, poverty, “is not an abandoning, but is defined by the road towards having, towards the truth of having. Trust, in fact, comes from the Latin verb fidere, fidere se alicui, to entrust yourself to someone. Trust is entrusting yourself to someone. Trust, therefore, has hope within it, hope as fulfillment; that is, it has poverty within it as a rule of life. Even if one doesn’t want to, one is obliged to let go. The psalms say this well when they speak of the rich: ‘I had so much envy for the rich, so much anger toward them, but then I understood, Lord: in the morning they were that way and in the evening they were no longer.’ It is poverty in the positive sense; it is the positive sense of poverty: trust: fidere se alilcui.”

This Week at

ABCD: Give and You Shall Receive

Our church is a place to pray, to give thanks, to mourn and to celebrate. A place for us all to unite—in need and abundance—to have mercy, lift each other up and ease pain and suffering. A place people turn to in their

time of need. We are all instruments of God’s mercy and peace. Our church, our family uniting to help those in need.

Thank you to all who have already generously responded to this year’s ABCD. Your support strengthens the ministries that serve our Archdiocese and allow the Church to form new disciples. As Scriptures remind us,

Give and it shall be given to you. Your neighbor needs you. You are the answer to someone’s prayers, and together, we are changing lives.

If you have yet to respond to this year’s ABCD, please take a moment to reflect upon the many blessings the

Lord has given you and how He is calling you to respond this incredibly important annual campaign. To make a gift, you can obtain a pledge envelope from the parish office or you can make a gift online at

www.isupportabcd.org. Let us all unite through our support of this year’s ABCD so that we can be One in Faith, One in Hope and One in Charity. Thank you
