From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers

It seems amazing to me that we have already reached the Fifth Sunday of Lent. Next Sunday is Palm Sunday, bringing the Season of Lent to its last few days before we enter into the Sacred Triduum and the celebrations of the Paschal Mystery. This season of repentance and conversion is quickly coming to a close. The weekend before Ash Wednesday, preaching at all the masses of the weekend, I invited the community to enter this season of conversion in the light of Truth, presenting ourselves to the Lord in humility and holiness. The journey of Lent is almost over, but there is still time to respond to the invitation and to deepen in our response. One of the vehicles we have used to help us reach for holiness throughout this season has been our common reading together of Matthew Kelly’s “Four Signs of a Dynamic Catho-lic.” Mr. Kelly reminds us that the journey of conversion is one of incremental steps. We must honestly see where we are on the journey and set reasonable goals for moving forward, remembering that “making small daily investments usually leads to large returns.” At the same time, we ought to actually move. To do that, we must also have intentionality. People do not just stumble into a vibrant spiritual life. They actively seek it. Even those already engaged in the spiritual life only move to the “next level” by actively seeking it, by being invited to it and being willing to reach for it. The first three of his signs of a dynamic Catholic are: Prayer, Study, and Generosity. The fourth sign of a dynamic Catholic, as listed by Mr. Kelly, is Evangelization. Do you want to change the world? Is there in you, still, that clarion call that often only the young hear, to truly make a difference in the world? As Catholics, we have a response to that call, whatever our age. Mr. Kelly reminds us that “our mission as Catholics is not merely to move through the world, leaving it unchanged. Changing the world is part of our mission, and throughout history we have done that in many ways. The Catholic Church broke the class barrier for education. We invented the scientific method to transform the sciences. We have always been a leader in caring for the sick and the poor. In almost every place and time for this past two thousand years, the Catholic Church has played a powerful role in making the world a better place. Catholics change the world.” We have the answer to life’s deepest yearnings. Now it is time for a new generation to step up to this great heritage and propose Jesus Christ in the midst of the world. To do this, we must become “the-best-version-of-ourselves,” helping others to achieve that same goal, and learning to exert self-control so as to be people-for-others, loving in the name of Jesus Christ. When we are won over by this truth, when it truly penetrates our hearts and frees us to reach, in truth, for all that we can be as people for others loving in Christ’s name, we build each other up, we build up the Kingdom of God, and we are open to be sent, in obedience to the will of the Father, to do His work, not our own. Over a year ago I shared with you the concept of RIM: Relationship-Identity-Mission. Our modern, western society places much emphasis on action – on doing. People look for their identity, and their worth, in what they do, rather than who they are. This connects to the downward spiral of modern philosophy, which is traditionally said to have begun with Descartes and his famous phrase, “cogito ergo sum,” “I think, therefore I am.” Thinking comes first - doing comes before being. But the lived experience of our faith, far preceding modern philosophy, has shown us that doing - Mission - does not come first. Mission does not come first, relationship does. I do not find my identity in the mission – the mission can change. I find my identity in my relationship with the Triune God, with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the God Who is the same “yesterday, today, and forever.” It is in God’s love that I find and am strengthened in my true identity, in finding “the-best-version-of-myself. From this identity I can be sent on mission. Our mission, in its most fundamental form, can be found in the Gospel of Matthew: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.” We must always look to the Lord so that we might ever deepen in our relationship with Him, grow in our authentic identity, and be ever-renewed in the true mission which is to be salt for the earth and light for the world – to be disciples who make disciples. Our time spent in relationship with God and in deepening, in a more authentic sense of identity, will strengthen us for mission – will empower us to be missionaries who propose Christ in the midst of the world, living as witnesses of God’s glory. This is what it means to live as a Dynamic Catholic. I make the words of Pope Francis to those gathered at World Youth Day my own to you: “The Church needs you, your enthusiasm, your creativity and the joy that is so characteristic of you. ‘Do not be afraid!’ When we go to proclaim Christ, it is he himself who goes before us and guides us. When he sent his disciples on mission, he promised: ‘I am with you always’ (Mt. 28:20). And this is also true for us! Jesus does not leave us alone, he never leaves us alone! He always accompanies you.” Ask yourself, in the light of “Veritas – Truth” how you are doing on the journey toward holiness. Be honest with yourself and with God and ask for His grace, that you might truly be a Dynamic Catholic who Prayers, Studies, is Generous, and lives as a witness, and Evangelist, proposing Christ in the midst of the word. Relationship – Identity – Mission. Hail, Star of the Sea. Praised be Jesus Christ.
