Important Health Warning About Playing Video Games

Photosensitive seizures

A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed tocertain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear invideo games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may havean undiagnosed condition that can cause these “photosensitive epileptic seizures”while watching video games.

These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness,altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs,disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may alsocause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from fallingdown or striking nearby objects.

Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of thesesymptoms. CHARACTER CREATION

You have two opons when inially creang your character:

■ Play as the default Commander Shepard and choose a first name.

■ Create a custom character, in which you control every detail.

Custom Character Creation

Start by using the Xbox keyboard funcon to type a first name forCommander Shepard.

Next, choose your custom character’s early history: Earthborn, Colonist,

or Spacer. This choice represents the first of many that affect howcharacters will react to you during gameplay.

Useto move to the Pre-Service History opon you want, and thenpress to select it.

Useto move to Psychological Profile. Press to select Ruthless, WarHero, or Sole Survivor.

Then, press to select your character class. If you select the defaultse ng, your character is a Soldier.

The Main Menu appears. Choose Start New Career, and then press.

You enter the Mission Computer database and begin to reconstruct yourprofile to confirm your identy.

Vanguard – Bioc/Combat

The Vanguard is a powerful combatant, able to combine the offensivepowers of the Adept and the Soldier. They have access to variousweapons and armor, as well as bioc powers. Gameplay focus is ontaking down enemies with quick and brutal force.

Sennel – Bioc/Tech

The Sennel is the most flexible class, able to combine tech and biocsto manipulate the environment, disable and aack enemies, or defendthe party. Gameplay focus is on protecng the party using kinecbarriers and healing it with advanced medical training.

Facial Customization

Use the Facial Customizaon screen to create a unique face for yourcharacter. You can customize the enre face or focus on a specific area,such as eyes or nose. Use the sliders in each secon to adjust a range of facial details. Select Finalize to accept the face you created.

Classes

There are six base classes, with variable strength in up to three areasfor the player and two squad members. Some classes concentrate alltheir strength in one skill area; others divide it between two areas tobalance taccs.

Combat skills deal maximum damage to enemies. Tech skills allowdecrypng security systems and weakening enemy weapons. Bioc

skills enable brain impulses to manipulate the physical world.

Soldier – Combat SpecialistThe Soldier is a tough warrior, able to deal with a range of combatsituaons. The Soldier gets improved health, has the widest selecon of weapons, and is eventually able to wear heavy armor. Gameplay focus ison ge ng into the thick of the fight, picking the right weapon for taccalsituaons, and outlasng opponents.

Engineer – Tech Specialist

The Engineer is a tech specialist, able to quickly and easily manipulatethe environment with specific skills. Gameplay focus is on shaping thebalefield during combat, healing the party, and debuffi ng enemies(disabling weapons and lowering shields).

Adept – Bioc Specialist

The Adept is the ulmate Bioc, able to affect the physical world withthe power of the mind. They can use biocs to violently manipulate

objects in the environment, including nearby enemy targets. Gameplayfocus is on disabling and debuffi ng enemies while dealing massiveamounts of damage.

Infiltrator – Combat/Tech

The Infiltrator is a tech-savvy warrior, able to win bales by quicklydisabling and killing enemies. Gameplay focus is on unlockingalternate routes, gaining access to good equipment, and obtaining anadvantageous posion over enemies in combat.

Non-combat HUD

As you progress through the game, you gain XP (experience points) byexploring new areas and engaging other characters in conversaon.

When you can interact with something or someone in the world, theblue focus symbol forms a circle inside it. Press to interact.

PLAYING THE GAME

Conversation

The cinemac, choice-based dialogue in Mass Effect lets you fine-tuneyour character and story using the conversaon wheel at the boom of your screen.

Choices on the wheel’s le let you explore a conversaon in-depth, whilechoices on the right tend to move the conversaon to compleon.

The top of the wheel typically corresponds to the Paragon path, whereyour character makes selfless, cooperave decisions. The boom of the

wheel generally correspond to the Renegade path, where your characteris more aggressive and hosle.

When you spend Talent points on Charm and Inmidate talents, newopons appear on the wheel’s le that may help conversaon outcomeslater. Charm opons appear in blue text. Inmidate opons appear inred. (Go to “Talents” on page 24 to learn more.)

Use  to point to your response, and then press to play it in acinemac style. As soon as the conversaon wheel appears, you canselect your response. Your character speaks the line at the dramacallyappropriate me. Press to interrupt or skip a line of dialogue.

Combat

Mass Effect’s combat system allows for precise control and considereddecision-making.

To draw your weapon, press. To holster your weapon, press.

To switch the weapon of any squad member, press and hold to

browse available weapons. Use to point to your choice, and thenpress to select. Release to return to the game.

To use special abilies for each squad member, press and hold.

To choose an ability, use to highlight it, and then press to select.Each squad member can have a single ability acvated when in this view.

(Go to “Combat Details” on page 12 to learn more.)

 Advancing Levels

Level up

You and your squad can advance levels by accumulang XP, whichyou gain by overcoming enemies, using certain skills, and complengmissions.

There is a single pool of XP for your enre squad. All squad acons feedinto it, and all squad members level up at the same me, including thoseback on the Normandy and not part of the acve squad.

Level-up benefits

When your character advances to a new level, you:

1. Gain health. You can increase this amount through talents.

2. Gain Talent points. You can spend these points at any me to increaseyour rank.

Auto level and undo Talent points

Press on the Squad screen to automacally distribute Talent points.

Aer spending Talent points, you can press to undo your choices.

Mission Computer

Press to bring up the Mission Computer display. Use to point to anarea on the display, and then press to select it. When an area receivesan update it flashes on the display.

The Mission Computer lets you access game details for:

■  Equipment – View currently equipped weapons, armor, and otheritems, along with opons for equipping new items.

■  Opons – Set gameplay, controller, graphics, sound, and other opons

from here. Many of these opons will affect gameplay diffi culty andyour visual experience; be sure to look at all the choices.

■  Map – View your current locaon and points of interest.

■  Save – Saves your game in its current state and locaon.

■  Squad – View stats for you and your squad members.

■  Load – Loads your saved and automacally saved games from here.

■  Journal – View current and recent tasks.

■  Codex – Learn all about the Mass Effect universe.

System Level

Shows a detailed view of a selected star system, with data on the starand the planetary bodies you can explore.

Planetary Level

Shows detailed features of the planetary body or object you are orbing,including data and applicable plot elements.

GALAXY MAP

The Galaxy Map is located in the center of the Normandy’s commanddeck. To access it, ascend the deck, and select the holographic galaxyimage. There are four levels to the map, each with varying degrees of detail for galacc navigaon.

Press to travel to any selected locaon. Press to zoom out fromyour current view. Press to exit the Galaxy Map.

Galaxy Level

Shows a top-down view of the galaxy and star clusters connected bymass relays.

Cluster Level

Shows the star systems you can explore and lists the planetary bodiesyou can travel to in each system, including planets, asteroid fields, andarficial structures, like space staons.

Accuracy: Sustained weapons fire reduces accuracy over me. However,the more training you have on a weapon, the longer your accuracyremains.

Accuracy is reduced through:

■  Kickback – Weapons fire produces a kickback effect that reducestargeng accuracy.

■  Fague – Sprinng eventually causes exhauson. (Press to sprintor to storm an enemy.)

Power Wheel: To access and use abilies, press and hold to bring upthe Power Wheel.

Use to browse the abilies for every squad member. Select an ability,and then press to cue it up as an acon.

You can also press to map the ability. Tap when you want to fireit off.

Use to point somewhere in the world and direct the acon. Eachsquad member can have a single acon declared.

Release to fire the acon and use the ability.

COMBAT DETAILS

Elements of the HUD (heads-up display) include:

Target Recle – Targets objects in your environment. Enemies arehighlighted in red, friendly objects in blue. Combat hazards arehighlighted in orange.

  Party Status Bar – Shows real-me status for squad health and shields.Also shows your squad’s movement status.

  Radar – Shows enemies that are in target range. Also shows map pinsfrom the in-game map.

  Selecon Bar – Displays name of highlighted object and results of pressing.

The combat system offers fine-tuned control of movements, decisions,and camera posion. Core features include:

Targeng: Use to move the targeng recle. Abilies and weaponsfire go to the center of your recle.

Target Assist: A Target Assist icon highlights the enemy nearest therecle. Pull to zoom the recle view, increasing the accuracy of weapons you are already trained on. (You can train on a weapon byspending Talent points on that weapon.)

Squad Orders

Useto issue squad orders in the field:

■ Pressto send your squad to the locaon you targeted.

■ Pressto order them to take cover.

■ Press to order them to aack a specific enemy.

■ Press to order them to rally to your posion, then follow you.

Weapons

Pistols

Pistols are highly accurate, have lile recoil, and are easy to use whenmoving. They are effecve at a variety of ranges, but inflict limiteddamage. Soldier, Engineer, Adept, Vanguard, and Infiltrator classes cantrain with pistols.

Shotguns

Shotguns have a slow rate of fire and high recoil, but inflict massivedamage to mulple targets when fired at close range. Soldier andVanguard classes can train with shotguns.

Assault rifles

Assault rifles are the standard armament of most Soldiers, offering agood balance between firepower, range, and accuracy. Only the Soldierclass can train with assault rifles.

Sniper rifles

Sniper rifles have a long range, are highly accurate, and inflict significantdamage. They have a limited rate of fire, however, and are praccallyuseless at close range. Only Soldier and Infiltrator classes can train withsniper rifles.

Grenades

Disk-shaped Alliance grenades can glide long distances and also latchonto targets or flat surfaces to be remotely detonated. Only you, asCommander Shepard, can use grenades.

Press to throw a grenade, and then press again to detonate.A grenade will automacally explode aer 10 seconds if you don’tdetonate it.

 Armor

Light armor

Light armor offers a basic level of protecon from enemy aacks andminimizes the movement penales that affect weapon accuracy. Allclasses can wear light armor.

Medium armor

Medium armor offers an increased level of protecon, but also increasesthe movement penales that affect weapon accuracy. Soldiers can wear

medium armor from the start, while Vanguard and Infiltrator classes cantrain to wear it.

Heavy armor

Heavy armor offers the highest level of protecon from enemy fire, butalso has the highest movement penales affecng weapon accuracy.Only specially trained frontline Soldiers can wear it. No class can wearheavy armor at the start, but the Soldier class can train to wear it.

EQUIPMENT

Equipment types include:

■ Armor ■ Grenades ■ Shotguns■ Assault rifles ■ Omni-tools ■ Sniper rifles■ Bio-amps ■ Pistols

Upgrades

Upgrades enhance and customize equipment, le ng you increasedamage, boost shields, and more. You can only upgrade the followingequipment types: armor, weapons, ammo, and grenades.

Each equipment piece has very specific upgrade slots. For example, theammo slot on a weapon can only be upgraded with an ammo upgrade.

To upgrade equipment, access the Mission Computer, and then selectEquipment. Choose the piece to upgrade from the lower right seleconbelt, and then press to view the Upgrade screen.

To upgrade ammo, select the applicable weapon, and then press toview the ammo upgrade. Press to confirm your upgrade and exit.

Squad Member Information

Select Squad on the Mission Computer to display informaon availableon each squad member. The informaon includes:

Current level

As you gain experience, your current level reflects your advancement.

Whenever you gain enough experience to advance to a new level, youare granted Talent points that you can spend to purchase higher ranks oraddional talents.

Bio-amps

Biocs can strengthen their power in specific disciplines by using amps(amplifiers). These specially designed devices oen come in the form of small electronic aachments that are worn on a Bioc’s ear or the backof their head.

Omni-tools

Omni-tools are mulpurpose diagnosc and minifacturing tools used fora variety of balefield tasks, such as hacking, decrypon, or repair.

Resources

Containers

Containers are found on every planet and oen hold valuableequipment and resources. Containers look like metal footlockers orcargo crates. You cannot place items in them.

Omni-gel

Technological materials that can be salvaged from the environment arecalled omni-gel. Use it with the omni-tool to do electrical or decryponwork. You can also use omni-gel to repair the Mako, your vehicle.

Credits

Credits are the primary monetary unit in the Mass Effect universe.

Medi-gel

Medi-gel (medical gel) heals various wounds and ailments. You acquire itthrough loong or NPCs (non-player characters). You can also purchasean increase in your medi-gel capacity in some shops. Press to deployFirst Aid.

Health

Lists your current and maximum health levels. Health represents yourability to take damage in combat. When your health hits zero, you die.Your maximum health increases as you advance during gameplay.

Experience points

Lists your current XP (experience points) and the total needed toadvance to the next level.

Paragon and Renegade meters

These meters track your choices throughout gameplay.The Paragon meter increases when your choices are noble, cooperave,or self-sacrificing. Paragons achieve their goals by doing the right thingin the right way.

The Renegade meter increases when your choices are aggressive, selfish,or ruthless. Renegades achieve their goals by any means necessary.

Talents

Assigning points to talents lets you improve combat, tech, and biocs, aswell as acvate special abilies under each talent.

You and your squad can upgrade talents in the same way. (Go to“Talents” on page 24 to learn more.)

Squad Selection

Use the Squad Selecon screen to recruit a balanced squad based onthe combat, tech, and biocs talents of each potenal squad member.

Press or to move among available squad members. Press to

remove or add a squad member. Press at any me to review yoursquad. Press to accept assembled squad.

You can only choose squad members in two circumstances:

■ When you first encounter a new potenal squad member.

■ When leaving the Normandy, where you can return to change squadmembers.

Choose your squad with care: when you leave the Normandy, you maynot have an opportunity to change them unl you can return.

UNCHARTED WORLDS

How to Navigate to an Uncharted World

Missions throughout the A can Traverse take you to uncharted worldswith mysterious anomalies. To discover the nature of these anomalies,you must travel to, land on, and explore these planets.

From the Galaxy Map, select Cluster Navigaon, System Navigaon,and then Planetary Landings.

Aer landing on a planet, explore its terrain in your Mako, whichcomes equipped with powerful sensors that detect alien enemies,

technological anomalies, and resources.Use your Mission Computer map on an uncharted world to discoverwhat is nearby. Press to set a desnaon at your current cursorlocaon, which then displays as an arrow on the in-game radar.

How to Leave an Uncharted World

When you’re ready to leave an uncharted world:

1. Press to call up the Mission Computer, and then select Map.

2. Press to return to the Normandy.

VEHICLE

Mako

The Mako is an infantry fighng vehicle (IFV), or rover. It carries you andyour squad into bale, where it provides fire support and cover.

To get you and your squad into the Mako, select it, and then press.

Move to drive the Mako, and move to rotate the view. Press 

to jump-jet over rough terrain or dodge enemy fire.

Press to zoom the gun camera, to fire the cannon, and to firethe machine gun.

To leave the Mako, find safe, stable ground, and then press. Be awareof the hazard level outside before deparng, as you may only survive fora limited me in some hosle atmospheres.

The Vehicle HUD displays health and shield levels for squad members,and weapons and equipment status for the Mako.

How to repair the Mako

You can spend omni-gel to repair the Mako in the field by pressing.Before doing so, however, you must stop the Mako, remain in it, andcease weapons fire.

TALENTS

A talent is an area of experse that can improve as you progress in thegame. As you gain experience, you acquire Talent points that you canspend to improve aspects of your character.

The talents available to you and your squad are determined by theclass selected in Character Creaon. At acvaon phases, marked withicons on the talent, you unlock new abilies or other talents on theSquad screen.

Combat Talents

Pistols – Improves accuracy and damage when wielding pistols. Acvatesthe Marksman ability that lets you fire more quickly and accurately for ashort me.

Shotgun – Improves accuracy and damage when wielding shotguns.Acvates the Carnage ability that lets you fire a huge blast from yourshotgun that damages enemies.

Assault Rifles – Improves accuracy and damage when wielding assaultrifles. Acvates the Overkill ability that lets you fire your weapon inlonger, more accurate bursts.

Sniper Rifles – Improves accuracy and damage when wielding sniperrifles. Acvates the Assassinaon ability that increases the damage of your next sniper shot.

Armor – Improves the amount of damage your armor can absorband may allow you to equip heavier armor, depending on your class.Acvates the Shield Boost ability that restores your shields in combat.

Assault Training – Increases melee and weapons damage. Acvatesthe Adrenaline Burst ability that resets the cooldown mes on all yourtalents so that they can be used immediately.

Fitness – Boosts your health, upping the maximum damage you can takebefore dying. Acvates the Immunity ability that increases your damageprotecon for a short period of me.

Spectre Training – Increases health, accuracy, and the effecveness of all aacks and powers. Grants the Unity ability that lets you revive yoursquad members if they are injured in combat.

Tech Talents

Damping – Increases the explosion radius of your tech mines. It acvatesthe Damping Field, which suppresses enemies’ tech and bioc abiliesin combat.

Decrypon – Lets you spend omni-gel to override security systems toopen doors or containers. Ulmately, it acvates Sabotage, which quicklydisables enemy weapons in combat.

Hacking – Increases the recharge speed of your tech proximity mines.Ulmately, it acvates AI (arficial intelligence) Hacking abilies, whichlet you control the AI of roboc enemies so they aack everyone aroundthem, including each other.

Electronics – Increases shield strength and lets you bypass the securitysystems of some locked objects. It also acvates use of Overload, which

damages or disables enemy shields in combat.

Biotic Talents

Throw – Generates a bioc field that throws objects within range.

Li – Generates a bioc field that lis objects into the air.

Warp – Generates a bioc field that slowly tears apart any object it hits,doing damage and temporarily reducing armor effecveness.

Singularity – Generates a bioc field that causes objects to fly andviolently smash into each other.

Barrier – Generates a bioc field that absorbs weapons fire.

Stasis – Generates a bioc field that surrounds and isolates any object ittouches, prevenng enemies from moving or aacking, but also blockingyou from dealing them damage.

 Additional Talents

Charm – Increases Charm opons in conversaon, and decreases thecredits needed when purchasing items in stores.
