It is common in our area to see the word Fusion used with res-taurants. This week I drove by a Mexican- Indian place that I want to go back and try. Dietary and ritual purity laws, such as are the point of con-troversy in today’s gospel, were the op-

posite of fusion. They were designed to distinguish and separate one group and religion from another and to keep them from eating together, akin to what segrega-tion laws did within our living memory. Jesus preached and practiced an open table fellowship, welcoming lep-ers, sinners, and outcasts. A charge against him was “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them”. Je-sus criticizes these rules of diet and purity not only be-cause of the hypocrisy and outward show of the phari-sees but because they are opposed to the table fellow-ship of his kingdom where there is “neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one in Christ Jesus” . We are blessed to welcome Lucio Trinidad to St Cor-nelius. Lucio is our seminarian intern, and he will be with us until June next year. He is a native of Jalisco, Mexico and his home parish is St Philip Neri in Lynwood. This internship is an integral part of his formation for priesthood. Lucio will be participating in all aspects of parish life to gain pastoral experience and to bring his gifts to our community. Please pray for him during this special time with us.

It is wonderful to welcome our children back to our

school this week. What a joy to have them back in per-

son and hear them play in the school yard after the si-

lence of most of last year. We pray God’s blessings on

them, their families and our teachers and staff as we

continue to provide a safe learning environment in the

current fluid Covid situation. A special welcome to our

new families and new teachers joining us this year.

As we welcome back out school children to in person

classes, we will reinstitute our masses with the school

community on Friday mornings at 8.15 am. These mass-

es are of course open to all who may wish to attend. We

will continue to offer daily mass at 5.00 pm as we are

the only Church locally with a weekday evening mass.

Habitat for Humanity—As you know housing is one of

the great needs of the moment in our area. So, it is ex-

citing that Habitat is doing a big build in our area, 46

houses at a site at 14th and Locust in Long Beach and

another site in South LA at 94th and Normandie. Togeth-

er with other Churches we are participating in this in

various ways. We want to make a financial commitment

of $10,000. To that end we will have a second collection

whenever we have a fifth Sunday in the month, such as

this Sunday. Also, we have an opportunity to volunteer

in the build and have been given October 9th either

morning or afternoon, or both. There are also opportuni-

ties mid-week at the South L A site and the ReStore in

Bellflower. Mark the date and watch for the volunteer

sign ups or call us at the office to get on our list. A big

thanks to Ed Barwick for being our parish point person

on this great work.

Safeguard the Children — Did You Know?

Teach children how to answer the door safely

You would never knowingly let someone dan-

gerous or unsafe into your home. But it is im-

possible to fully vet every stranger — mainte-

nance worker, new neighbor, salesperson, etc

— who shows up at your door. Teach children a

few tips about answering (or not answering) the

doorbell. Consider these rules, or something

similar, for your family: Always look to see who

is at the door first. If the person is a stranger,

get an adult to answer the door. Do not open

the door to someone you do not know. For

more information, request a copy of the VIRTUS

article “Beware of inviting other people – and

vulnerability – into your house,”

at lacatholics.org/did-you-know.
