Allegory in "Masque of the Red Death"
Symbols we watched for:• The use and importance of color• the importance of numbers• symbolism of East/West• the number 7
Two levels of meaning: 1. the literal elements of the plot (the colors of the rooms, for
example) and2. their symbolic counterparts, which often involve large
philosophical concepts (such as life and death).

Symbolism: East to West & Colors
• Why is it significant that the rooms are lined up from East to West?
• Look at what you said the colors of the first six rooms remind you of (on your chart). When you look at the selection of colors as a whole, why do you think Prospero might have chosen the colors of the first six rooms?
• Why would Prospero contain the colors black & red to one room?
• Judging from the title of the story & the colors of the 7th room, what might this room symbolize?

So why is this story an ALLEGORY?
What does each individual symbol represent? The last room -
The ebony clock -
Midnight -
Uninvited guest -
THE BIG QUESTION:How does Poe's use of all these symbols make the story an ALLEGORY?
Oct 119:49 AM
Once a symbol is established it can be used to represent another event...it becomes an allegory. One example is this cover from The New Yorker magazine after the economy crashed.
So now that you've read it, why is this magazine cover an effective use of ALLEGORY?
