Ken Burdick (Jesus) feels so honored to be playing the role of Jesus. This has been his dream role for 25 years since he first played Annas in 1995 for BCLOA, and although it is finally happening, he still cannot believe it. Some of Ken’s favorite roles are Sweeney Todd (2004, 2014), Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha (2016), Macbeth (2016), and Aldolpho in The Drowsy Chaperone (2011, 2017). Most recently, you may have seen Ken singing with the Byrom Brothers band and the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, exploring his other passion, Rock and Blues. Ken considers the role of Jesus as the crowning achievement in his 27 year career onstage, and wants to thank Hal for continuing to believe in him. As far as future projects, he’s not sure where to look next...any suggestions?

Logan Burdick (Apostle) was excited when he heard about Jesus Christ Superstar. His father, Ken Burdick, has been wanting to do this show longer than Logan can remember, so when word of this show got around, he was thrilled he may get to do this show with his father. Logan has played in many roles such as Jesus in Godspell (2016), Scuttle in The Little Mermaid (2016), and Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast. He is very grateful that he was cast in this show and can’t wait to see the results.

Stephen Bush (Annas) is ecstatic to be included in the Ovation’s inaugural production. Previous credits include Dan in Stars’ Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jack in Spot-light’s Into the Woods, as well as numerous high school and junior theatre roles, such as Shrek in Shrek the Musical, Horton in Seussical, John the Baptist/Judas in Godspell, and Schroed-er in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. He would like to thank Hal and the full Super-star production staff, as well as everyone at the Ovation, for working tirelessly to ensure the success of this show and the many to come.

Ariel Clark (Apostle) recently made her directorial debut directing Oliver! at NOR Junior Theatre. She is honored to be involved with this produc-tion. She would like to give a big thanks to the incredible cast and crew for making this dream show a reality.

Fred Cremer (Apostle) has taken part in many

shows with BMT/Stars, including Ragtime, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream-coat, Man of La Mancha, Sweeney Todd, and Les Miserables. In his spare time, he enjoys singing and ringing in his church choir and handbell choir respectively, and baking cheesecakes.

Mason Edwards (Judas) is thankful for this juggernaut opportunity to be a part of a top-tier cast, in a timeless production. Enjoy the show!

JP De Leon (Apostle) is a high school actor finding his footing on his first professional acting experience with the inaugural show of the Ovation Theatre. Finding a love of musical theatre under the mentorship of fellow cast member Jennifer Resolme, he has had the opportunity to perform great roles like Sweeney Todd in Sweeney Todd and J.B. Biggley in How to Succeed In Business. Now honored with a role amongst an amazing and talented cast, he hopes to do nothing less than put on a “Superstar” performance worthy of the many actors on stage with him.

Caswell Espinoza (Apostle) is a 15-year-old sophomore attending Bakersfield Christian High School who enjoys acting and being on stage. He has been a part of several shows and was last seen in Beauty and the Beast as Cogsworth. When not on the stage, Caswell enjoys contributing to the theater in other ways including tech. He is very excited to see where his career takes him next.

Kelsey Gaines (Apostle) has immensely enjoyed learning from the brilliant cast and production staff of Jesus Christ Superstar. She has been involved in theatre around Bakersfield since she was 4, and her favorite roles include The Witch in Into the Woods, Miss Hannigan in Annie, Madame Thenárdi-er in Les Misérables, and Lauren in See Rock City & Other Destinations. She would like to thank Hal for taking a chance on her, Marvin for granting her more confidence, Amber for working so hard with her, Joanna for listen-ing, and Cherish for being Wonder Woman. She is grateful for all the support and love she has received throughout this process. Thank you!

STAFF NOTES FROM THE DRAMATURGE

Jesus Christ Superstar was first released as a rock opera concept album in 19 with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The rock opera made its debut on Broadway in 19 1, then was made into a film in 19 . The album was very controversial when it first came out and was originally banned from the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) because it was deemed “sacrilegious and anti-Semitic.” Many of the show’s critics didn’t like that the story of Jesus was being put to “rock” music which was a daring statement 40 years ago as it was an unprec-edented concept.

The completely sung-through musical is comparatively based on the Gospels’ account of the story of Jesus during the last week of his life from the perspective of Judas. The writers aim to humanize Jesus and certain artistic and creative liberties are taken that differ from the accounts in the Bible. Primarily, the portrayals of Judas and Mary Magdalene in how they relate to Jesus illustrate interpersonal struggles that are not depicted in the Bible.

Today there is still controversy surrounding this show because while it doesn’t deny the deity of Jesus, it also doesn’t emphasize it, and the focus of the show remains the portrayal of the humanity of Jesus, not the accuracy of the Gospels.

Whether you believe in Jesus or not, this is still the Greatest Story Ever Told, even if it is from a different perspective. Jesus Christ Superstar is thought-provoking and makes for a great conversation starter. While the content itself is captivating, the score makes it musically spectacular. The show has been adapted and performed countless times over the past 40 years. Each director brings their unique zest to Jesus Christ Superstar, while leaving some room for viewers to draw their own

conclusions, as is the case with Ovation’s production that you are viewing tonight.

NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR

From its inception as an album, Jesus Christ Superstar has been a popular piece. It also has a rich history of being produced and conceived with dif-ferent artistic interpretations. The original Broadway production was set in a fantastical post Apocalyptic world, with the theatrics of the production pushed forward to the maximum. The movie, was set as a “Passion Play” with costumes that were a mix of the modern “hippie” era styles and the classic biblical look. or example, the oman soldiers were clad in purple t shirts and camou age

pants, while Jesus was dressed in his classic robes. Even the filmed stage version in 2002 was modernized with Judas dressed in a leather jacket and cowboy boots. The liberties we have taken with this production and design are not new to the piece. In fact, rarely has JCSS been rendered in the classic bibli-cal sense. Instead, directors and designers have picked up on the many themes of the show and chosen to set the story in a modern setting to better relate to modern audiences, much like a more recent hit show on Broadway: Hamilton.

Since its arrival, Hamilton has become a cultural phenomenon just as JCSS was in its hay day. With Hamilton, by modernizing the style of the story of America’s forefathers and depicting the revolution using hip-hop/rap music, the geniuses behind that show hoped to affect modern audiences. They went so far as to cast the show in a way that represents what America is now, using African American and Hispanic actors as our forefathers rather than old white men. They hoped that by doing this, the show would reach across the generations and cultural divides to impact people who may otherwise never have listened to a “musical” about the life story of Alexander Hamilton. They unequivocal-ly succeeded. JCSS did close to the same thing when it first came out, and wanted to follow in Hamilton’s footsteps with this show. Like Hamilton, we have a multi-cultural cast and have used modern styles of dance to help the audience connect to the piece. The costumes also re ect our desire to incor-porate the modern into “The Greatest Story Ever Told”. We wanted to show certain correlations that blended the past to the present, hopefully helping to depict not just how the societal groups of ancient Jerusalem were then, but how they are now. Nothing on the stage tonight was done by accident. All has been meticulously planned and staged to give you, the audience, a unique and special experience.

As you watch the show, please look for the parrallels between our time and Jesus s own, and try to find your own special connection to the lessons in this story. Thank you and enjoy the show.
