NeedA need is the psychological feature

that arouses an organism to action toward a goal and the reason for the action, giving purpose and direction to behavior.

Need is mainly biological.Needs must be satisfied to maintain a

stable state. So need fulfillment relates to OB.

Abraham Maslow Abraham Harold

Maslow was born April 1, 1908 in Brooklyn, New York.

He was a psychologist. Mostly noted today for

his proposal of a hierarchy of human needs and theory of self-actualization.

Maslow’s Hierarchy Of Needs Maslow’s Hierarchy

of needs is a pyramid of mainly 5 needs.

He claims that the fulfillment of lower need arouses the higher lever need to be fulfilled.

What motivates employees?

Page 5: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

The 5 Needs : 1. PhysiologicalThe physiological needs of the

organism, those enabling homeostasis, take first precedence.

These are bodily and biological needs that are mandatory to fulfill.

They can also be termed basic or survival needs, so take highest priority.

It mainly includes needs like food, air, water, sleep and sex.

2. Safety NeedsWhen physiological needs are met, the

need for safety will emerge.Humans rank safety and security

above all desires.Safety needs incorporate most security

aspects including health, family and social security.

It includes needs like health security, employment security, family security, personal property against crime etc.

3. Love/Belongingness NeedsAfter physiological and safety needs

are fulfilled, the third layer of human needs is social.

This encompasses emotionally-based relationships in general.

Mainly being accepted in a small or large social group comes under this.

It includes needs like friendship, family relations etc.

4. Esteem NeedsMaslow: All humans have a need to be

respected, to have self-respect, and to respect others.

Imbalances at this level can result in low self-esteem & inferiority complexes.

It includes confidence, competence, and achievement to achieve fame and glory.

5. Self ActualizationSelf-actualization is the instinctual

need of humans to make the most of their abilities and to strive to be the best they can.

In other words, self-actualization is reaching one's fullest potential.

Finally when one gets all the needs below satisfied s/he craves to do and become the perfectionist.

Page 10: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Criticisms It’s a relatively old theory so is not

relevant in present times.Multiple needs can so simultaneously

ex friendship (belongingness) and food (physiological).

Concept of self-actualization is considered vague.

Has been also been challenged on grounds like: not everyone ultimately seeks the self-actualization.

OB and Needs/MotivationThere are other need/motivation

theory except of Maslow’s like Herzberg’s two factor theory, McGregor (X and Y Theroy) etc.

As a manager or OB student we must understand what really motivates a person.

It will help us motivate people to work for the combined organizational goal.
