0. General information

The new MY09 version of the Quattroporte was the outcome of a thorough renewal

project, in terms of both styling and engineering. Five years after the model’s launch

and with more than 15,000 cars sold, Maserati decided to offer reinterpretations of the

car, to aim for ambitious new goals.

Pininfarina further refined the Quattroporte’s elegant design with more modern lines

and clearer references to the distinctive features of the GranTurismo family. Under the

bonnet, as well as the 4.2L V8 engine the more powerful 4.7L version now also became

available, still in combination with the automatic 6 speed gearbox.

The GranTurismo S (M145GL) joined the Maserati range exactly one year after the

launch of the GranTurismo, with Maserati revealing the first heir to the famed GT to the

public. Created for those in search of a more dynamic version of the GranTurismo

already on the market, the GranTurismo S, fitted with a 4.7L V8 engine and robotized

rear-mounted gearbox, was more aggressive while still keeping faith with the GT

tradition by delivering high levels of comfort to four occupants during long journeys.

The GranTurismo S Automatic (M145HL) was the logical completion of the Maserati

GranTurismo range. The model presented in 2009 combines the performance of the

4.7L engine, the most powerful in the range, with the unique comfort of ride provided by

the automatic gearbox.

The 2009 range comprises the models listed below:

GranTurismo S (M145LL)

The sports version of the marque’s coupe, the Maserati GranTurismo S (MI45GL) was

intended for those looking for a car with a unique identity. The 4.7 litre V8 engine can

generate a power of 323 kW (440 HP). The Transaxle system is used for engine and

gearbox, the leading-edge of Maserati technology and a feature only used on the

highest-performing cars. The suspensions maximise the Transaxle system’s potential

thanks to the new fixed-setting dampers, with 10% more damping force, with revised

compression and extension ratio and more rigid rear torsion bar.

The braking system, developed in association with Brembo, guarantees constant,

impeccable performance thanks to the Dual Cast technology.

Exterior

The sportscar character of the GranTurismo S is underlined by Pininfarina’s modern,

aggressive line, given added prestige by unmistakable details such as the red trims on

the Maserati Trident and the Saetta logo, matching the standard colour of the brake

calipers, as used on Maserati racing cars.

GranTurismo S Automatic (M145HL)

The GranTurismo S Automatic offers two fundamental innovations: the 4.7 litre 440 HP

engine, and the automatic 6-speed transmission.

The increased engine torque, especially at medium/low rpm, combined with the

automatic six-speed transmission, exalts the car’s genuine GT nature. As on the

GranTurismo S, the Brembo braking system with front calipers with six pistons delivers

even higher performance thanks to the dual-cast technology, where cast iron and

aluminium are used together to offer constant performance also under extreme thermal

stress.

Passenger comfort is further enhanced by the provision as standard of the Skyhook

system, with automatic, continual damper adjustment.

The distinctive features of the GranTurismo S Automatic are the new, larger miniskirts

and the new 20” wheels with spokes with their obvious similarity to the Trident logo.

1. Engine

The Quattroporte models equipped with 4.7L engine have the new-generation Bosch

Motronic ME 9.1.1 engine management system.

The basic functional principles are unchanged from the previous Motronic ME7 version

of the system. The addition of a number of components to supervise engine

management has not involved any changes to their operating principles, which are still

the same. The most obvious difference concerns the engine ECU.

The Motronic ME9 ECU is located in

the engine compartment, by the left

wheel arch.

The casing protects the unit from

heat and any brake fluid leaks.

Main changes compared to the ME7 system:

• the new cast aluminium ECU casing is larger and has new connectors (94 pin car

side connector + 60 pin engine side connector) and a new pinout;

• new module position inside the engine compartment to reduce wiring lengths;

• higher ECU processing capacity thanks to the use of a new, more powerful

processor (GreenOak MPC564 64-bit, 56Mhz CPU);

• elimination of the diagnostics K-line; diagnostic and programming data exchange is

now by means of the C-CAN line, in compliance with the new ISO 15765-4

standard;

• immobilizer function controlled by the engine ECU and body computer solely by

means of the C-CAN line; the backup W-line has been eliminated;

• new hydraulic VVT actuator with range increased to 60 degrees, for smoother

engine operation when idling and better torque transmission at low rpm on the new

Quattroporte with 4.7L engine; the operating principle is unchanged compared to

the existing actuators with range of 50 degrees.

60º valve timing control devices:

The F136YG and F136YH engines of the Quattroporte S and Quattroporte Sport GT S

are equipped with new valve timing control devices allowing total timing variation of 30º

(60º engine actuation).

Greater intake/exhaust system aperture for Quattroporte Sport GT S

The higher rated power of the Quattroporte Sport GT S (440 HP compared to the

430 HP of the Quattroporte S) is achieved thanks to a modification to the intake and

exhaust system, as well as specific engine mapping.

The fact that there is no filter on the

debimeter allows the air flow to circulate

through the engine more freely. This

requires a specific engine management

system setup (similar to that of the

GranTurismo S).

These new hydraulic VVT actuators with

operating range increased to 60 degrees

provide smoother idling and higher torque

at low rpm. The operating principle is the

same as for the 50 degree actuators used

previously.

Maserati Range Technical Updates

Like the GranTurismo S, the Quattroporte Sport GT S is fitted with a racing exhaust

system with bypass valves for the rear silencers. These valves are opened and closed

by selecting Sport or Normal mode.

"Normal" Mode - valves closed

In “Normal” mode, the special exhaust valves are closed, forcing the exhaust gases to

take a longer route before being expelled; this routing reduces the energy level and

thus tones down the sound of the engine.

However, “Normal” mode, designed to provide the greatest on-board comfort, limits the

engine's performance.

"Sport" Mode - valves open

In “Sport” mode the valves are open, allowing the exhaust gases to follow a shorter,

more direct route; this enables them to leave the system earlier and lets the engine

express all its power (440 HP).

Selecting “Sport” mode allows the car to perform to full potential.

3. Transmission

ZF 6HP26 Automatic Transmission

The new values and the greater power derived from the torque generated by the 4.7L

engine are supported by a transmission control software specially developed to

optimise acceleration and the gear shift sensation provided by the automatic

transmission.

The driving experience features:

• Excellent acceleration and ideal peak

torque distribution

• New gear shift sensation between 4th

and 5th speeds, peak power available

up to the highest engine speeds

(7,600 rpm).

"MANUAL" mode: gear keeper

• In “MANUAL” mode the driver controls gear shifts directly, and changes are permitted

up to the maximum rpm permitted by the rev limiter.

• The electronic gear shift indicator on the car’s speedometer, inherited from the

GranTurismo S, indicates the best time to change gear; the gear shift paddles (Active

Shifting supplied as standard) behind the steering wheel, with ergonomic “Trofeo”

design (also borrowed from the GranTurismo S) always ensure optimal gear changes,

especially on routes full of bends.

"AUTO SPORT" mode: "Fast Start" strategy for top performance

• To optimise starts from a standstill, the automatic transmission incorporates an

innovative “Fast Start" function, which allows the driver to perform controlled starts with

no limits on its use (refer to the car’s Manual for further information; this function is not

suitable for use on roads, since it requires the MSP function to be deactivated). This

function enables the car to surge from 0 to 100 Km/h in just 5.1 seconds, instead of

5.4 seconds.

"MANUAL SPORT"/"AUTO SPORT" mode: downshifting with "double declutch"

• The use of the “double declutch” technique when downshifting allows the engine to

slow to speeds more suitable for the new gear and, in the case of the Sport GT S,

produces awesome sounds from the exhaust that add to the driving thrill. In “SPORT”

mode, the transmission helps the driver to use the car in racing style, with very fast

gear shift times.

7. Safety devices

Air Bag Node (NAB) New Low Risk Deployment Air Bags

With effect from 2009, Quattroporte and GranTurismo models are equipped with a

new-generation passenger side air bag system featuring an “intelligent” technology

called Low Risk Deployment.

GranTurismo range cars produced in 2009 may have traditional or LRD air bags. The

GranTurismo M145JL model features the dashboard with new passenger air bag, while

the GranTurismo M145ML is equipped with the traditional bag.

The Low Risk Deployment module is a technical innovation of major importance for

passenger safety. In all types of frontal impact, it offers the occupants of the front seat

unbeatable protection, regardless of age or stature: both the smallest children,

travelling in suitable child seats facing the rear of the car, and adults.

Some features of this air bag are designed to enable it to respond appropriately in all

circumstances: special apertures reduce the device’s pressure when the bag

encounters an obstacle near the dashboard, while the bottom part is shaped to fit the

head of a baby in a cradle. The sides are shaped to hold the shoulders, reducing the

pressure on the head and chest.

The air bag has been completely restyled to ensure that its volume, shape,

characteristics and deployment comply with the most severe passenger protection

standards without having to adopt the complex advanced weight sensor (AWS) system

on the markets where this system is required. The new generation air bags are also

more attractive.

N.B.: there have been no changes to the other components of the air bag system.

8. Electrical systems and functions

Restyling of Florence diagram of Quattroporte 4.2L and 4.7L.

There are a number of differences compared to the Florence diagram of the

Quattroporte Automatic up until MY08:

• elimination of CAF front headlight direction control ECU;

• use of master and slave NFA nodes for control of headlights, as on the

GranTurismo;

• elimination of the NSPE node for the AWS system (USA market) further to

adoption of the new LRD air bag;

• elimination of the I-CAN line for the TV and mobile phone unit control node; these

applications are now integrated in the NIT module (TV only available in

combination with optional Bose NIT).

Notes:

(*) Not supplied as standard / depends on version.

The NCM module K-line is only used for Motronic ME7 systems.

iPod connection to Magneti Marelli NIT:

Cars affected: GranTurismo models with Magneti Marelli NIT, hardware version 8.0 and

8.1.

The iPod interface, standard for the USA and Canada markets on the entire M145

range with Magneti Marelli NIT, allows an iPod to be connected to the USB / AUX IN

socket in the glove compartment.

iPod connection lead (P/N 251221)

If the NIT has a USB charger dock:

The iPod cannot be controlled by means of the NIT; its own controls have to be used.

The AUX IN socket receives the analogue audio signal while the USB dock is only used

to supply the device with power.

If the NIT has a “USB Full” dock (for HW 8.0 and HW 8.1 NITs only):

In this case the iPod can be controlled using the controls of the NIT (Compatibility may

be only partial, depending on the iPod version).

Important note: for this function to be enabled, the NIT must comply with the following

conditions:

1.Software version BR2 or later

2.Function enabled in the car’s Proxi (using the Proxi configuration procedure)

Proxi configuration:

• 034 – Magneti Marelli iPod NIT

• 042 – Magneti Marelli iPod NIT removal (opposite of function no. 034): this Proxi

configuration eliminates the setting of the (optional) iPod connection for the car’s

InfoTainment system (N.B: if the user wishes to remove the iPod function, he can also

do this by simply disconnecting the iPod connection lead).

GranCabrio (GranTurismo Convertible) (M145BD)

The GranCabrio (better known on some markets as the GranTurismo Convertible)

started an important new chapter in Maserati’s history. This Maserati is different from all

those which went before it.

The name, GranCabrio, recalls the famous Maserati tradition and experience, while

also linking the new car to the GranTurismo concept and re-evoking the GranSport cars

of the past. At the same time, the name underlines how much this car differs from all

previous models. The GranCabrio redefines the idea of the “cabriolet” or convertible.

This four-seater convertible is the natural completion of the Maserati range: customers

in search of outstanding performance combined with luxury and genuine Italian style

can now choose between a four-door saloon, a genuine GranTurismo coupe and the

pleasure of driving with the wind in their hair in an elegant convertible.

The GranCabrio has the same technical profile as the GranTurismo S Automatic. It

shares the same platform and the wheelbase is identical to that of its twin model. Under

the bonnet there is the same wet sump 4.7L engine, capable of delivering a power of

440 HP.

The Maserati GranCabrio is equipped with six-speed ZF automatic transmission and a

hydraulic torque converter that guarantees smooth gear shifts, while also maintaining

the characteristics of the sporty V8 engine.

It is fitted with Skyhook electronic suspension control system as standard. This system

features dampers with aluminium body with constant adjustment of the damping effect.

This solution adapts the car’s attitude to driving style and road conditions instantly, for a

ride of unbeatable comfort.

Exterior

With the top on, the non-existent rear upright is simulated by the elegant forward-

sloping design, which gives the GranCabrio the look of an elegant coupe.

Once the top is down, the Maserati GranCabrio is transformed into a stunning

convertible, a paragon of feline power and grace. The dynamism of the side view is

accentuated by the car’s low ground clearance and a long bonnet with an elegant “V”

profile leading the eye forward to the radiator grille with a large chromed Trident in its

centre.

The sides also feature chromed trims, giving the GranCabrio’s appearance an added

gleam. One particularly attractive touch is the continuous chromed profile which runs

around the edge of the cabin and incorporates the third brake light.

The GranCabrio’s shape is the outcome of lengthy aerodynamic tests performed to

reduce the resistance typical of open-topped cars. The GranCabrio’s Cx coefficient is

amongst the best in its category: 0.35 with the top up and 0.39 with it down. The spoiler

and rear cone both help to generate the highest possible downforce.

Styled by the great master Pininfarina, the GranCabrio has a canvas top, a styling

feature that links the car firmly to the Maserati tradition of refinement.

Interior

The Maserati GranCabrio is the only true convertible in its class capable of seating four

adults in comfort, in an elegant, luxurious interior. The amount of space in the cabin is

far above average, and assures outstanding comfort even for rear seat passengers.

N.B.: For a full account of all the car’s technical features, the soft-top

construction type, the important innovative systems and passive and active

safety components, reference should be made to the “Maserati

GranCabrio” manual.

The GranCabrio’s interior is attractive to look at and to touch. It has been created using

the very finest materials: the leather is hand-crafted by Poltrona Frau® and the

dashboard, door panel and side panels are in the choicest types of wood. The

craftsmanship and attention to detail are also clear in the chromed rings around the

dashboard buttons and steering wheel, not to mention the Alcantara finishes on the

area of the gear shift panels on the steering wheel.

The on-board comfort level is also increased by the canvas soft-top, in three layers for

excellent soundproofing. With the top down and only two passengers on board, air

flows through the interior can be minimised with the aid of the windstop, specially

designed for the GranCabrio (available on request).

On the Maserati GranCabrio the climate control system has been developed to

guarantee the maximum comfort, whether the top is up or down. The system

automatically recognises the mode in which the car is being used, and reprogrammes

its emissions mixed with air to maintain the set temperature.

Bosch Motronic ME9 Engine Management System (NCM)

With effect from MY10 the Bosch Motronic ME9.1.1 engine management system (first

introduced on the Quattroporte S M139IQ) is also used on 4.2 litre engines.

The basic operating principles are unchanged from the Motronic ME7 system; the

various engine management components are changed but they still function on the

same principle. The main difference relates to the ECU itself.

The Motronic ME9 ECU is located in the

engine compartment, behind the left

wheel arch.

A screen is installed to protect the ECU

from heat and any brake fluid leaks.

N.B.: For more information about the Bosch Motronic ME9.1.1 engine

management system, refer to the “Advanced Electronics 1” manual. For

details of the main changes compared to the ME7 system, see point

TMC Traffic Message Channel on Magneti Marelli NIT

With effect from MY10, the TMC Premium (Traffic Message Channel) service is

available on all GranTurismo and Quattroporte cars fitted with Magneti Marelli NIT. This

service allows drivers to receive information about road conditions, such as traffic

conditions, weather, accidents, etc., directly on their navigators. The service is standard

and available only for the following markets: Italy, France, UK, Germany.

With effect from MY10 an iPod can be connected to the Magneti Marelli NIT on the

entire Maserati range.

The connection can be made by means of the iPod connection lead, available as a

Maserati spare part, connecting an iPod to the USB / AUX IN provided in the glove

compartment.

iPod connection to Magneti Marelli NIT:

Cars affected:

The IPod interface is standard for the USA and Canada markets on the entire M139

and M145 range with Magneti Marelli NIT. On the other markets, the interface is

available as an optional.

In this case the iPod can be controlled using the controls of the NIT. (Compatibility may

be only partial, depending on the iPod version).

Important note: for this function to be enabled, the NIT must comply with the following

conditions:

1. Software version BR2 or later

2. Function enabled in the car’s Proxi (using the Proxi configuration procedure)

Proxi configuration:

• 034 – Magneti Marelli iPod NIT

• 042 – Magneti Marelli iPod NIT removal (opposite of function no. 034): this Proxi

configuration eliminates the setting of the (optional) iPod connection for the car’s

InfoTainment system (N.B: if the user wishes to remove the iPod function, he also do so

by simply disconnecting the iPod connection lead).

The new GranTurismo MC Stradale (M145OL) and the Quattroporte Sport GTS Awards

Edition (M139PQ) special edition joined the range in 2011.

The GranTurismo MC Stradale became the fastest, lightest and most powerful car in

the Maserati range, inspired by the experience of the Maserati Corse racing team in the

Trofeo Maserati and FIA GT4 championship.

The Quattroporte Sport GTS Awards Edition, born to celebrate the no less than fifty-six

awards won by the Maserati Quattroporte in just six years since its launch, was based

on the Quattroporte Sport GT S, with the aim of combining all the characteristics that

had made the Maserati flagship such a benchmark in the segment in a single car.

An important safety upgrade was introduced across the entire range, with the second

generation TPMS system.

Maserati Range Technical Updates

In 2011 Maserati drew on the excellent performance of the GranTurismo S and the

experience gained on the racetracks with the Trofeo and GT4 to launch the

GranTurismo MC Stradale. This model made full use of the experience of the Maserati

Corse racing team, as its name clearly indicates.

It therefore became the link between the road car range and the racing sector, and is

the perfect example of Maserati’s ability to develop a product equally suited to the road

and the racing circuit.

The GranTurismo MC Stradale weighs an impressive 110 kg less than the

GranTurismo, with an overall weight of 1,770 kg. This characteristic reflects the benefits

of the Maserati cars in the racing range, maintaining optimal weight distribution (48%

front, 52% rear), to guarantee balanced handling and even tyre wear.

GranTurismo MC Stradale (M145OL)

With 331 kW, the 4.7 litre V8 engine gives the car higher power (450 HP against 440)

than the GranTurismo S, while the 510 Nm of torque is also an improvement of 20 Nm.

These characteristics help to cut acceleration times from 0 to 100 km/h, which the

Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale achieves in just 4.6 seconds, and increasing the to

speed to 301 km/h.

The state-of-the-art electronics on board drastically reduce the gear shifting times of

the new MC Race robotized transmission to just 60 milliseconds.

It was the first Maserati in history to have a dedicated Race mode, combined with the

upgrades of the Auto and Sport modes, with a simplified control layout on the

dashboard.

Exterior

The MC Stradale’s front miniskirts, air intakes and spoilers are larger than those of the

GranTurismo. Experience on the race track and fluid dynamic research have led to the

development of package with greater aerodynamic efficiency. In particular, the front

spoiler, side miniskirts and slots in the front fenders combine to push the front of the

car down at high speeds, cool the brakes, extract hot air from the brake circuits as well

as delivering downforce to the entire car.

Overall, the MC Stradale is 48 mm longer than the GranTurismo and is 10 mm closer

to the ground at the front and 12 mm at the rear, generating a 25% increase in front

and 50% in rear downforce at 200 km/h.

N.B.: For a general view of all the car’s technical features and the

information needed for diagnostics and the performance of service and

repairs on the car, reference should be made to the ”Technical

Presentation: GranTurismo MC Stradale” manual, 2011 edition.

The MC Stradale became the only two-seater in the current Maserati range; the rear

seats were eliminated to save weight.

The front seats are extremely lightweight and comfortable, with carbon fibre shell, high-

tech upholstery and the Trident logo stitched on the headrest. Their body-hugging

shape provides the torso and legs with perfect support during high-speed cornering on

the race track, as well as all the comfort needed for long road journeys.

They can be adjusted by hand to move the base backwards or forwards and tilt the

back. They can also have three different heights, set on request.

The special “Awards Edition”, based on the Quattroporte Sport GT S, aimed to combine

all the characteristics that have made the Maserati flagship such a benchmark in the

segment in a single car:

• the unique, elegant style, mixed with a touch of racing verve thanks to the distinctive

external and internal fittings;

• driving enjoyment, because the Quattroporte “Awards Edition” is based on the

Quattroporte Sport GT S, a car with top-class handling and performance;

• hand-crafted details that make every car a one-off.

Quattroporte Sport GTS Awards Edition (M139PQ)

It is immediately recognisable from the outside thanks to the new “Quarzo fuso” finish,

an exclusive for this model.

The burnished finish of the chromed external parts, the side air intakes and the radiator

surround, match the 20” Multi Trident wheels in satin-finish dark grey.

The interior also reflects the Maserati flagship’s famed combination of racing élan and

craftsmanship. The Poltrona Frau® leather of the seats is used alongside perforated

Alcantara with a new wave pattern. The roof lining is also in Alcantara. The interior is

completed by the special brushed aluminium underdoor moulding covers and the satin

finish Piano Black wooden mouldings.

The black-lined boot is ornamented with chromed details and also has a leather side

pocket. The attention to details even reaches to the mats, in an even richer, softer

material.

Interior

The dual cast braking system, similar to that of the Quattroporte Sport GT S, is given

added lustre by the hand-polishing of both the front and the rear calipers. With the

Quattroporte Sport GT S “Awards Edition”, for the first time Maserati and Brembo

offered the market a precision-engineered polished brake caliper, half-finished to a

mirror-like shine which also highlights its racing connotations.

A special “Awards Edition” badge features on the car’s exterior.

1. Engine

The improvements introduced in the MY11 range related to the new engine of the

GranTurismo MC Stradale, the F136YK, derived from the F136 YE version.

This V8 engine with displacement of 4.7 L has power of 331 kW at 7,000 rpm

(10 horsepower more than the GranTurismo S); the torque curve is even more

accentuated at low rpm and the maximum torque is 510 Nm at 4,750 rpm (20 Nm

higher than the GranTurismo).

The majority of the improvements derived from the “Low Friction Program” which

redesigned the fluid dynamics of the oil sump and the DLC (Diamond-Like Coating)

finish of the hydraulic tappets and camshaft lobes. This improved the engine’s power

and consumption efficiency, thus reducing its emissions.

• Camshafts with special surface “Tribofinishing”;

• Crankshaft with special surface “Tribofinishing”;

• Specific connecting-rods with modified seats for new big end bearings and new

• Special lead-free big-end bearings;

• Pistons with phosphating surface treatment on skirt and special piston rings;

• Oil pump with higher pressure setting increased by 0.5 bar;

• Modified engine block with special reed valves.

The most noticeable, highest-impact change is the reduction in internal friction due to

the development of a system of reed valves in the engine block which simulate the dry

sump system even though no recovery pump is installed. The four reed valves return

the excess oil to the upper area where the crankshaft operates. The pressure balancing

achieved simulates a dry sump effect.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (NTP)

Foreword

The European Commission has ruled that all new cars introduced onto the market with

effect from 2012 and new cars put on sale from 2014 must be fitted with a TPMS as

standard.

The first legislation making the installation of a TPMS on all new cars put on sale

compulsory was introduced in the United States, from 2008. In Europe, safety reasons

have been reinforced by environmental considerations, a fundamental factor in the

decision to make TPMS compulsory. In association with its supplier Beru, Maserati has

had a TPMS system for years.

The system measures the pressure of all four tyres in real time and alerts the driver in

the event of a drop in pressure.

This system was now introduced in a new version (TPMS 2.5), intended to improve its

efficacy and reliability; the differences compared to the previous version (TPMS 1.5) will

be illustrated below.

Cars affected

M139 and M145 as an optional until the legislation comes fully into effect (already

standard on USA, Canada and Japan versions and for some market specifications).

Quattroporte TPMS 1.5: Valid Assembly Number Range 27860 - 57699

Quattroporte TPMS 2.5 : With effect from Assembly Number 57700

GranTurismo TPMS 1.5: up to Assembly Number 55703

GranTurismo TPMS 2.5 : With effect from Assembly Number 55704

GranCabrio TPMS 1.5: up to Assembly Number 55363

Position in the car

In all cars (Quattroporte, GranTurismo and GranCabrio) the new NTP control unit is in

the same position as the previous version, on the floor, on the left in LH drive and right

in RH drive cars. It can be accessed by removing the floor finishing panel in front of the

driving seat.

Data communication

The NTP is connected to the B-can line for data exchange with other nodes for

diagnostic communication.

The NTP uses a dedicated LIN line to receive data from the wheel antennas.

Description of the system

The second generation TPMS consists of the following components:

• NTP ECU (version 2.5)

• 4 wheel ECUs, integrated in the wheel valves (specific sensors Gen 2.3)

• 4 Triggers

• 2 digital antennas

• TPMS warning light

Operation:

The new system has two antennas, in the left front and right rear of the car respectively.

The two antenna system improved signal reception performance, meaning that a new

ECU, capable of managing two antennas and four triggers, had to be introduced.

The new system functions by a different method from the previous generation. The

system uses a Trigger installed in each wheel arch, which polls the pressure sensor in

the valve when the vehicle is at a standstill. When the car is on the move, the system

enables the pressure sensor to switch to automatic data transmission mode, and the

data are transmitted every 3 seconds. If the system detects that the data from a

specific sensor have been lost, it uses the wheel’s trigger to poll the sensor and force it

to transmit data.

The second generation TPMS ECU has the same shape and size as the old version,

but the connector and PIN OUT are different.

The second generation has new digital antennas and new wheel sensor, while the

transmission frequency is unchanged at 433MHz (315MHz for the Japanese market).

Description

The NTP receives power at +15 (controlled by the ignition key).

The sensors mounted inside the wheel rims, next to the tyre inflation valve, monitor the

tyre pressure (they also monitor the temperature value, not shown on the display).

The NTP acquires the tyre pressure and temperature data from the two wheel

antennas fitted in the front left and rear right wheel arches. The antennas receive this

information from the wheel ECU by means of radio waves (RF transmission).

Each wheel ECU, incorporated in the tyre valve, has an ID code, which is transmitted

together with the temperature and the pressure data. This means that each tyre is

monitored separately.

The ECU acquires the tyre status, processes the data and sends a series of data about

the tyre pressure status and any system errors to the on-board control panel by means

of the B-CAN line.

The NTP also receives the following information on the B-CAN line:

• Acquisition of the calibration command acceptance signal from the B-CAN network;

• Car speed (from NBC);

• Engine rpm (from NBC);

Instrument panel node (NQS):

• It acquires the signals on the B-CAN network and processes the tyre pressure status

data;

• It controls the calibration command by means of the specific menu and transmits the

signal on the network;

• It acquires the calibration command acceptance signal from the B-CAN network.

Maserati Range Technical Updates

Operation:

Once the calibration procedure has been requested (see System calibration), if the

system has received data from all the wheel sensors in that ignition cycle and all the

pressures detected are above 0.6 [bar], the NTP starts the calibration procedure. If any

of the tyres has a pressure of less than 0.6 bar, calibration is not permitted.

The system takes the maximum pressure of each axle as the rated pressure and

calculates the Soft Warning and Hard Warning threshold pressure for each axle using

the following formulae:

• Soft Warning threshold = rated pressure - 0.3 [bar]

• Hard Warning threshold = 75% of rated pressure

N.B.: It is fundamental to bear in mind that the pressure considered for calculating the

Soft and Hard Warning thresholds is the Absolute Pressure and not the manometric

pressure.

Absolute Pressure = Manometric pressure + Atmospheric pressure (e.g. Absolute P.

(3.3 bar) = Manometric P. (2.3 bar) + Atmospheric P. (1 bar) ).

The TPMS will warn the driver if any of the following conditions occurs:

• Soft Warning: The Soft Warning alert message is activated as soon as one of the tyre

pressures drops below the Soft Warning threshold.

• Hard Warning: The Hard Warning alert message is activated as soon as one of the

tyre pressures rises above the Hard Warning threshold.

• Rapid loss of pressure: If the pressure of a tyre falls at a rate of more than 0.35

[bar/min] the Hard Warning alert message is activated.

• Run Flat Warning: The Hard Warning alert message is activated as soon as one of the

tyre pressures falls below 0.6 [bar].

• Over Temperature Warning: if the temperature measured by a wheel sensor exceeds

105ºC (221ºF) the system will activate the over temperature warning, which will

disappear as soon as the temperature reading returns to 100ºC (212ºF) or less.

• Change in wheel position: If the system detects that even just one of the wheel

sensors has changed its position since the last ignition cycle (if the position of a wheel

has changed), the TPMS will ask the driver to recalibrate the system. This enables the

TPMS to recalculate the alarm thresholds.

MY11

Page 51: Maserati Range Technical Updates · The aim of this document is to provide Maserati ... The most obvious difference concerns the engine ECU. The Motronic ME9 ECU ... Maserati Range

Maserati Academy 51

Maserati Range Technical Updates

Reset conditions:

The Soft/Hard Warning alert is deactivated when the pressure reading obtained by the

wheel sensor that activated the alert message exceeds the Soft/Hard Warning

threshold.

A Hard Warning alert triggered by a rapid drop in pressure is deactivated at the next

ignition cycle if the conditions which activated the alarm no longer apply.

The Run Flat Warning alert is deactivated when the pressure reading obtained by the

wheel sensor that activated the alert message exceeds the Run Flat Warning

threshold.

Calibrating the system:

The system requires calibration after:

• replacement of one or more tyres;

• swapping of wheels;

• if uncertain whether at least one of the above has been performed.

There is no need for recalibration if a tyre has simply been topped up to the correct

pressure.

To calibrate the system, select the “TPMS Calibration” screen on the multifunction

display by pressing the “MODE” key A.

Then hold down the “+” B key to start calibration.

This operation can be carried out with the key turned to MAR and the engine off. The

system will take a few seconds to complete the process, during which the display

shows the green symbol and the message “Calibration activated”. If the informative

screen showing the pressure values of each tyre is recalled, dashes “--.--“ will appear

instead of the values.

Interference may cause problems in TPMS calibration if it is carried

out in a zone with large amounts of RF radiation. In case of

difficulties with calibration, try performing the procedure on the

open road, outside the town centre.

N.B.: For further information about the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

(NTP), refer to the “Advanced Electronics 2” manual.

Head liner Node (NIM)

Description

There have been SW upgrades to the Head liner Node (NIM) ECU on both the

Quattroporte and the GranTurismo.

The upgrade was necessary across the entire range because the new TPMS (2.5) does

not require the dedicated TPMS calibration key (the first generation TPMS had a

calibration key on the light fitting in the middle of the roof, connected to the NIM node

wiring).

In addition, the description of the operating mode of the analogue clock was modified

on the Quattroporte range, to bring it into line with the clock’s real mode of operation.

GranCabrio (GranTurismo Convertible) Sport (M145DD)

The GranCabrio Sport, introduced in MY12, extends an important chapter in Maserati’s

history, that of the convertible able to seat four in comfort, with docile, smooth power

always ready to respond, with an unmistakable style combined with an unrivalled

elegance.

Alongside the elegant, already high-performing GranCabrio, first introduced in MY10,

the launch of an even more sporty, dynamic version is typical of our marque’s

philosophy. The GranCabrio and GranCabrio Sport are similar in soul but with different

details.

The throbbing heart of the GranCabrio Sport delivers 450 HP thanks to a series of

innovations to improve its operation. It was designed with important innovations to

reduce friction, such as the use of DLC (Diamond-Like Coating) for the tappets and

camshaft loads. The 6 speed ZF automatic transmission has MC Auto Shift: rev limiter

gear keeper, double declutch, launch control, digital rpm counter and sporty

accelerator map.

The GranCabrio Sport’s outstanding performance is achieved thanks to a series of

special design features introduced on this model. The car’s standard outfit includes

Skyhook suspensions with dampers with continual variation of the damping effect, with

a special setup for this version.

There was a major modification to the suspension system:

• The rear stabiliser bar is now solid, with diameter of 20 mm;

• New front and rear springs;

• New front and rear dampers;

• New specific setup for the Skyhook control system.

Exterior

The GranCabrio Sport has a radiator grille with black vertical strips, and the internal

surround of the headlamps is also black, with white direction indicators. The usual

Trident in the centre of the grille has red details: a feature that only appears on the

most powerful models in the Maserati range.

The front flick-ups, the door handles and rear-view mirror casings are coloured to

match the car’s body, like the miniskirts, supplied as standard, that underline the

model’s aggressive spirit and play an important role in its aerodynamics.

A black finish is also used along the shadow line, accentuating the car’s dynamic

personality. The oval tailpipes are also black; they make the new model unmistakable

and are also available in carbon fibre on request.

Interior

The new front seats have a lumbar region adjustment system.

The gear shift paddles on the steering wheel are of Trofeo Design type (standard outfit

the use of Diamond-Like Coating (DLC) on the tappets and camshaft lobes.

The result is an engine with lower fuel consumption and emissions that maintains its

performance in terms of power and torque: 323 kW (440 HP) at 7,000 rpm and 490 Nm

at 4,750 rpm.

GranTurismo Sport (M145HL and M145LL)

The GranTurismo Sport is the evolution of the GranTurismo S and the GranTurismo S

Automatic; this new model combines the two in the Maserati MY13 range.

The GranTurismo range now comprises three main versions:

• GranTurismo (4.2 L Automatic Transmission);

• GranTurismo (4.7 L Automatic/Robotized Transmission);

• GranTurismo MC Stradale (4.7 L Robotized Transmission).

The GranTurismo Sport is available with two types of transmission: automatic 6 speed

(MC Auto Shift) and robotized 6 speed (MC Shift).

With the MC Shift transmission, the GranTurismo Sport has the Transaxle layout,

providing optimal weight distribution (47% front and 53% rear) for even better

performance and more fun at the wheel.

The MC Auto Shift version (automatic transmission) has slightly different weight

distribution, with 49% at the front and 51% at the rear.

Exterior

The restyling operation has focused mainly on the front of the car. The extreme

personality of the GranTurismo MC Stradale has been reinterpreted in terms of sporting

elegance, entirely in keeping with the Gran Turismo concept.

The new headlamps, with LED DRL parking lights, help to reinforce the character of the

car’s front view, with new colours on the internal casing, further enhanced by new

finishes.

The side grilles are larger, with improved performance. On the new GranTurismo Sport

the front bumper has a new central splitter, supplied as standard in matt black but

available in carbon fibre as an optional.

On the GranTurismo Sport the side miniskirts give the car personality and render it

recognisable at a glance. The side miniskirts give the GranTurismo Sport an aggressive

style while also increasing its aerodynamic efficiency. They were developed in the wind

tunnel and help to convey the flow of air to the wheels.

A new central and rear floor has also improved the Cx and Cz coefficients.

Interior

MY13

Page 70: Maserati Range Technical Updates · The aim of this document is to provide Maserati ... The most obvious difference concerns the engine ECU. The Motronic ME9 ECU ... Maserati Range

Maserati Academy 70

Maserati Range Technical Updates

The aim pursued in the restyling of the interior was to achieve the ideal balance of

comfort and performance, maintaining all functional features by adding character,

making the cabin sportier and more attractive, without sacrificing the luxury and

elegance key to the Maserati brand.

The most importance change is to the seats, which make the car more recognisable

even from the outside. The steering wheel has a more racing shape and the seats are

shaped more closely to the body. Their form has been specially designed for the

GranTurismo Sport, for a discerning driver in search of style and performance, with

ergonomics an important factor.

The Maserati GranTurismo Sport states

its intentions at once with the introduction

of new, more sporty front seats with

integral headrest.

Special care has been taken over

ergonomic aspects, which have

generated considerable improvements in

terms of space and convenience.

The seats are now even more comfortable, with the seat size increased to 300 mm. To

provide the lateral support required for a more sporty driving style, the side of the shell

has been modified to increase the volume of the retaining padding, creating a

comfortable, body-hugging seat that provides better support even at the side when

driving conditions require.

The rear seats have also been completely renewed in the same style as those at the

front. The philosophy applied has improved comfort levels for all passengers while at

the same time giving a sporty, dynamic look. The use of the new sporty front seats with

back cover has also considerably increased the space available for the rear occupants.

The introduction of the new front and rear seats has increased the space inside the car,

with an extra 20 millimetres of leg room for rear passengers.

The new GranTurismo Sport has two

standard contents intended to make driving

this car a uniquely thrilling experience:

• Maserati "Active Shifting" (Trofeo design):

the steering wheel paddles are longer than

those available on the other models in the

Maserati range. Their ergonomic shape

makes shifting gears easier on winding

roads.

• Perforated aluminium pedals.

New sporty steering wheel:

The new sporting steering wheel is designed to give the driver the best driving

experience, thanks to its new ergonomic shape.

The steering wheel’s dimensions have been changed, flattening the top and bottom.

1. Engine

The engine of the new GranTurismo Sport (F136YS for automatic transmission version

and F136YQ for robotized transmission) features the “”Power Increase” package which

introduces major changes to the engine, continuing the series of technological

developments Maserati has adopted over the last few years, since the launch of the

GranTurismo MC Stradale.

The Power Increase package has been applied to the following cars: GranTurismo MC

Stradale, GranTurismo MC, GranTurismo Sport and GranCabrio Sport (GranTurismo

Convertible Sport).

The increased performance (+10 HP and 20 Nm of torque) has been achieved in

SPORT mode and at engine speeds above 5,500 rpm. These figures were arrived at by

optimising the engine mapping for the use of petrol with at least 98 RON, increasing the

valve overlap above 5,500 rpm thanks to the VVT system and optimal use of timing

advance. In Normal mode, the intake timing control devices are used in the same way

as previously.

The modifications made to the engine to improve performance in terms of power and

torque have not generated any increase in fuel consumption or emissions.

The improvements include the development of new engine mapping to optimise

combustion parameters, improved management of variable valve timing at high rpm

and, last but not least, the redesign of new, reinforced pistons.

These changes, combined with the use of 98 RON petrol to maximise performance,

increase the engine’s maximum power to 338 kW (460 HP) at 7,000 rpm, with a peak

torque of 520 Nm obtained at 4,750 rpm.

The new F136YS and F136YQ engines have a maximum power of 338 kW (460 HP) at

7,000 rpm, meaning 10 horsepower more than the GranTurismo S.

The torque also rises by 10 Nm from the 510 Nm of the GranTurismo S to the 520 Nm

of the GranTurismo Sport at 4,750 rpm.

The improvements introduced by the “Low Friction Program” and the “Power Increase”

package have also helped to improve the performances of the engine installed on the

GranCabrio (GranTurismo Convertible). The new F136YP engine delivers 10 HP more

than the engine mounted on the GranCabrio MY12. 80% of peak torque is already

available from 2,500 rpm and peak torque is also increased by 20 Nm (from 490 Nm to

510 Nm at 4,750 rpm).

The exhaust of the GranTurismo Sport retains the valves on the tailpipes which bypass

the silencer to give a strongly sporty identity. In “Auto Sport” mode, the exhaust valves

open from 2,500 rpm. In Manual Sport mode the valves are open at all times.

In “Normal” mode, the valves are closed, forcing the exhaust gases to take the longest

route, dispersing their energy to reduce noise levels.

Launch Control (MC Start Strategy):

The new MC Auto Shift includes the Launch Control mode and is active in Auto-Sport

mode.

To optimise standing starts, the automatic transmission offers the MC Start Strategy,

which works with the MSP/ESC off.

The driver has to keep the brake pedal depressed and then press the accelerator pedal

before releasing the brake pedal when the engine reaches the optimal speed (2,300-

2,500 rpm). This fast start strategy, only recommended for use on the racing circuit and

in situations of absolute safety, reduces the time from 0 to 100 [Km/h] (0-62 mph) from

5.0 to 4.8 seconds.

Gear Keeper

As on the Quattroporte Sport GT S, the MC Auto Shift allows the driver to take even

more charge of the car’s performance. In Manual-Sport mode, the chosen gear is

maintained even when the engine reaches the rev limiter setting.

Rpm Counter

For unbeatable driving pleasure, a digital rpm counter that indicates the ideal time to

shift gear is also provided.

Downshifting with “double declutch”

The use of the “double declutch” technique when downshifting allows the engine to

slow to speeds more suitable for the new gear. This strategy is available in Manual

Sport and Auto Sport modes.

ZF Automatic Transmission

The ZF six speed automatic transmission includes the super-responsive MC Auto Shift

mode, developed directly from the transmission of the Quattroporte Sport GT S for the

GranTurismo S and the GranCabrio Sport.

There are 5 modes available: Auto-Normal, Auto-Sport, Manual-Normal, Manual-Sport

and Ice.

In Manual Normal mode the driver controls gear shifts and changes are permitted up to

the red area on the rpm counter.

In Auto-Sport mode gear shifting is completely automatic and changes are made more

quickly, for a more sporty handling sensation.

The cars which feature the MC Auto Shift strategy are: GranTurismo Sport (M145HL),

GranTurismo MC (M145PL) and GranCabrio (GranTurismo Convertible) Sport

(M145DD).

6. Suspensions and wheels

Sport-Skyhook set-up:

In terms of suspensions, the new GranTurismo Sport is equipped as standard with the

Sport Skyhook system, the evolution of the continuous damping control system, which

makes the car even more responsive and enjoyable to drive, while simultaneously

increasing comfort levels for passengers. In SPORT mode, the car is even more

sensitive to inputs from the driver, while in Normal mode it constantly adapts the

damping response to absorb any roughness in the road surface and give smoother

handling.

All this delivers a level of handling response that combines sporty performance and

comfort in all driving conditions.

SKH N: Skyhook Normal Mode

SKH S: Skyhook Sport Mode

In the GranTurismo Sport, the difference between dynamic response in Normal and

Sport modes is even more noticeable than with the previous version of the Skyhook.

The new setup of the GranTurismo Sport’s suspensions has improved the car’s

dynamic behaviour for both transmission types, automatic and robotized, in both Sport

and Normal modes.

MY13

Page 79: Maserati Range Technical Updates · The aim of this document is to provide Maserati ... The most obvious difference concerns the engine ECU. The Motronic ME9 ECU ... Maserati Range

Maserati Academy 79

Maserati Range Technical Updates

In NORMAL mode, the impact damping response is safe but even smoother, while in

SPORT mode all this car’s sporty, agile personality comes to the fore thanks to an

increase of about 10% in vertical rigidity, emphasising the car’s dynamic performance

and reducing roll.

The change is most noticeable on the GranTurismo Sport with automatic transmission,

where the dimensions of the rear stabiliser bar have been increased by about 12%

(+2 [mm], from 19 to 21 [mm]) compared to the solution previously adopted on the

GranTurismo S Automatic.

The GranTurismo Sport with robotized transmission has benefited from the new setup,

with improved handling, traction and consumption.

GranTurismo Sport Automatic Transmission (M145HL):

• New rear springs

• New rear stabiliser bar

• New Skyhook front and rear dampers with variable setup

• New SW for Skyhook ECU

GranTurismo Sport Robotized Transmission (M145LL):

• New Skyhook front and rear dampers with variable setup

Adaptive Headlamps System (NFA)

Cars affected: entire M145 range.

The front light assembly retains its original functions and shape but has been

completely redesigned and upgraded thanks to the addition of the DRL (Daytime

Running Light) LED technology. As well as improving the car’s appearance, the new

LED headlights increase visibility and thus safety. The new LED headlamp is available

on all models in the GranTurismo range.

Unlike the conventional bulb-type headlamp, the new LED lights come on faster and

with greater brightness, last longer, consume less electricity and are able to maintain

their performance intact over time.

The external lights and direction indicators only come on with the ignition key turned to

MAR, except for the parking lights, which can be switched on at all times.

The external lights can be switched on and off manually or automatically, in response to

external light levels.

NSP parking sensor node:

Driving Position node (NAG)

The NAG, installed underneath the driving seat, now features a new HW10 ECU and a

new SW version 2.1.

The changes relate to:

• Seat movement timer

• EEP function with anti-trapping system. The Passenger Easy Entry system allows the

seat to be moved forward to close to the limit position before the backrest is tilted

forward. The seat moves back into place before the backrest is returned to the driving

position.

"Open door timer" function

When a front door is opened with Key-off the seat can be moved for a certain period of

time (door open timer = 3 min.), after which the ECU switches to standby mode. With

the new modification, whenever both front doors are closed the timer is switched to

30 sec to allow the seat to be moved with the doors closed.

At the timer timeout, the NAG sends a message enabling the network to switch to sleep

mode.

EEP function

Changes have been made to the Passenger Easy Entry (EEP) function as described

below.

MY13

The new front bumper of the GranTurismo Sport, with integral parking sensors

positioned lower down, has made it necessary to reprogram the NSP ECU.

Page 87: Maserati Range Technical Updates · The aim of this document is to provide Maserati ... The most obvious difference concerns the engine ECU. The Motronic ME9 ECU ... Maserati Range

Maserati Academy 87

Maserati Range Technical Updates

For a more complete understanding of the changes made, the main functions of the

EEP are summarised below.

Protection functions:

The EEP function may cause panic, so to avoid this risk the EEP is only enabled if the

anti-trapping system is active and after it has been initialised.

Anti-panic function:

Activation of any button, memory, seat or steering wheel adjustment, immediately stops

the automatic function in progress (memory recall, EEG, EEP or EEP initialisation).

Seat slide anti-trapping function during EEP:

To prevent the seat from squashing the rear seat passengers when it moves back into

place after the EEP routine, the ECU is equipped with a “virtual force sensor”.

Thanks to a mathematical algorithm which processes the seat slide movement data

(speed, acceleration, variation in accelerator, motor power supply current, etc., Bitron

patent), when a force of 164 kg is exceeded in 10 mm of travel, the ECU reverses the

seat travel direction for 208 pulses of the Hall sensor (about 3 cm).

The function is not active in the following cases:

• during initialisation

• during gear motor peak torque (about 1 sec.)

• in the first 5 mm of travel from the electric stop

• during automatic realignment after battery disconnection.

Initialisation allows memorisation of:

• seat slide rear limit stop

• seat slide front limit stop

• reference mapping from seat slide forward to backward positions

• reference mapping from seat slide backward to forward positions.

MY13

Page 88: Maserati Range Technical Updates · The aim of this document is to provide Maserati ... The most obvious difference concerns the engine ECU. The Motronic ME9 ECU ... Maserati Range

Maserati Academy 88

Maserati Range Technical Updates

Anti-panic + Manual Movement during return from EEP:

After triggering of an anti-panic response which stopped a return from the EEP position

(backrest to driving position), if the seat is moved backward or forward using the

manual seat control, the new position is considered to be the “new driving position”.

Speed not valid during EEP:

If the vehicle speed signal is not valid, VehicleSpeedFailSts=1, the EEP will only

operate with Key-OFF and door open.

Systematic mapping realignment:

To prevent the build-up of too many position count pulse errors, and prevent the

motors, actuators and mechanical parts from being subjected to the mechanical/electric

stress of the mechanical limit stop, the EEP function utilises the mechanical limit stop

once and then uses an electronic limit stop, 36 pulses (about 5 mm) earlier, the next 20

times. The 22nd time the mechanical limit stop will again be used. When the

mechanical limit stop is used, the electric limit stop position memory is updated.

Drift correction for repeated easy entries:

To prevent the build-up of counting errors in the event of repeated easy entries, the

return position is only saved if it differs from the current position by +/- 3 pulses.

Anti-trapping current sensor failure:

If a current I< 20050 mA is detected for a time of 1 sec. during initialisation or an EEP,

initialisation/movement of the seat is stopped and the “Current malfunction” is recorded

in the memory.

The EEP function cannot be activated as long as the fault persists.

The test is performed whenever an EEP is activated. If the current measured is

I>20050 the system starts operating correctly again and the disappearance of the fault

is recorded in the memory.
