• Masdar City is a massive initiative under the direction of global contractor CH2M Hill to construct a 2.3 square mile city from scratch

• Begun in 2006, Masdar City will be home to 50,000 people and 1,500 businesses beginning as early as 2009

• The goal: to create the most efficient city possible while producing close to zero carbon emissions

Project Engineers are working to eliminate the global warming that stems from the need for oil production facilities such as this

Renewable Sources

This 60 Megawatt Solar Power Plant was constructed by the German firm Conergy to power construction activity. Total solar generation will exceed 130 Megawatts upon the city’s completion.

PhotovoltaicsMany companies produce components for a PV system such as the one shown here. Technologies are constantly improving in both collection science and storage science.

Efficiency saves Energy

Daily life in Masdar City will be more efficient, requiring less energy to run

Personal Rapid Transit

Residents of Masdar will travel around the city utilizing a Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system. This will eliminate the pollution caused by vehicles as well as allow the city to be designed without being inhibited by roads. The system shown was created by Advanced Transportation Systems for Heathrow Airport in London

Water

A solar powered desalinization plant will provide Masdar City with all of its water.

Solar Water Heaters Save Energy

Solar water heaters keep the standard of living high while keeping energy consumption down. Solar water heaters use a combination of the sun’s heat and photovoltaic cells to heat water. This example is produced by the German company Guersolar.

Recycling is made natural

The key to an effective recycling program is that it be as easy for consumers to recycle as possible.

RepurposedWaste

The decomposing materials create a mini-environment for bacteria which digest the excrement and turn it into hygienic fertilizer in about 6 months.
