¡Feliz Día Internacional de la Mujer a todas nuestras lectoras! ¿Por dónde empezar? Ésa es la pregunta que me hago todos los meses. Este mes de marzo es súper especial para Mi Amiga por ese día tan emblemático. A lo largo de la revista encontrarás artículos que honran a las mujeres y sus lo-gros. El propósito de esta carta es rendir un homenaje a las mujeres que nos abrieron el camino y por eso, durante este mes, vamos a celebrar a cada una de ellas en nuestras redes sociales. Tuvimos el placer de entrevistar a la señora Rosemary Cloud, la primera mujer afroamericana en ser jefe de bom-beros (fire chief) en Estados Unidos; deseamos que su historia te inspire.

Tenemos el honor de presentar en portada al multifacético Ricky Martin. Su nuevo CD, A quien quiera escuchar, es mucho más de lo que esta-mos acostumbrados a oír de él. Su música me transportó al séptimo grado, cuando veía su calendario todos los días y me arrancaba una sonrisa; es ese amor de fan que despierta este disco. Su voz melódica despierta los sentidos y te pone a soñar en el amor y el desamor.

Esta edición ha sido toda una locura. Si pusiéramos una cámara aquí en Mi Amiga te morirías de la risa viendo nuestras ocurrencias. Creo que el delirio de publicar una revista mensual y mi boda nos están volviendo algo loquitas. Esto se refleja de una manera muy interesante en la revista; en ella pueden ver nuestro crecimiento gradual.

Este número, como los demás, ha sido posible gracias a nuestros anun-ciantes y a un gran equipo de trabajo que da el 100% por hacer de esta revista un éxito. Here is to Us!Happy International Women’s Day to all of our readers! Where to start, that’s the question I ask myself every month. March is a very special month here at Mi Amiga as we celebrate International Women’s Day. You will find various articles throughout this issue that honor women and their accomplishments. There are so many amazing women that have paved the road for us. The background of this letter is a small tribute to those women who have for-ever changed our lives. We will highlight each of them in our Social Media throughout the month of March. We had the pleasure of interviewing Ms. Rosemary Cloud, who is the first African-American woman to be Fire Chief in the country. It’s our hope to inspire you with this article.

We are honored to have the multifaceted artist Ricky Martin on the cover. His new CD “A quien quiera escuchar” is everything and so much more than we had expected from him. “cuando el bebé llora por primera vez, eso es lo más emo-cionante de este trabajo.” Agnes Kasaigi lo llama el “momento do-rado”. Esta mujer, de sonrisa amplia y envolvente, es la jefa de la Unidad de Maternidad del Hospital de Buwenge, en Uganda, y el pasado año fue reconocida con el premio a la Mejor Matrona del Mundo, concedido por la Confederación Internacional de Matro-nas (icm) y Save the Children, un galardón que se otorgó también a la matrona bangladeshí Ponita Rani Raha.

Agnes tuvo muy claro desde niña que se dedicaría a ayudar a otras mujeres a dar a luz. “Tenía una hermana matrona y era tan inteligente, amable y cariñosa que yo quería ser como ella, así que a los doce años decidí que ése sería mi trabajo”, explica. “Las matronas somos la voz de las mujeres embarazadas y sus bebés, somos las primeras personas que tocamos esa vida; creo que la gente no comprende del todo lo que esto significa, lo importante que es, pues de nuestro trabajo depende que sobrevivan muchos recién nacidos y muchas madres”, advierte la ugandesa.

Según el último informe El Estado de las Parteras en el Mun-do elaborado por el Fondo de Población de las Naciones Unidas (unfpa), un total de 289,000 mujeres murieron debido a complica-ciones en el parto en 2013, alrededor de tres millones de recién nacidos fallecieron durante el primer mes de vida y 2.6 millones de bebés nacieron muertos. Este documento analiza el panorama

de la partería en 73 países de ingresos bajos y medios de África, Asia y América Latina, donde se concentra 96% de las muertes maternas mundiales, 91% de los mortinatos (bebés que nacen sin vida) y 93% de las muertes neonatales (las que se producen en los primeros 28 días).

Lo primero que llama la atención es que estos países tan sólo cuentan con 42% de las matronas y personal médico y de enfer-mería del mundo. La escasez y la baja formación son algunos de los problemas. Tan sólo dos de cada diez de estos países tienen un número suficiente de parteras preparadas para atender las ne-cesidades de las embarazadas y los bebés. Si se invirtiera en una atención de calidad, revela el unfpa, podrían evitarse dos terceras partes de las muertes. Millones de vidas al año.

En Uganda, un país en el que 87% de la población vive en zonas rurales, se contabilizan cada año cerca de dos millones de embarazos mientras que el total de matronas ronda las 7,000. “Ne-cesitamos más parteras, más conocimientos y más habilidades y equipamiento para poder salvar más vidas, sobre todo en el ámbito rural. Es ahí donde hace falta más ayuda. Más educación en temas de salud sexual y reproductiva. Muchas mujeres ignoran que tienen que prepararse para el parto, no saben reconocer las señales del cuerpo o el momento en que deben ir al hospital”, dice Agnes.

La unidad en la que trabaja recibe a una treintena de mujeres al día y atiende unos cuarenta partos al mes. Además, recientemente fue seleccionada para poner en práctica el programa Helping Babies Breathe, un servicio de resucitación de bebés que ha ayudado a reducir el número de muertes considerablemente.

Pese a la importancia del trabajo de estas mujeres, sobre todo en contextos de pobreza, su estatus y salario no siempre está a la par. Además, se enfrentan a otro tipo de percepciones negativas. Hay lugares, por ejemplo, en los que se minusvalora su labor y la gente prefiere pagar a un médico al considerarse que tiene un esta-tus social superior.

Agnes Kasaigi reconoce que haber recibido el premio a la Mejor Matrona del Mundo le “da fuerzas” para seguir trabajando a pesar de los obstáculos y ríe ampliamente cuando se le pregunta a cuán-

tos bebés ha traído al mundo. Son tantos que ha perdido la cuenta. Pero hay una a la que nunca olvidará. Fue un parto especial. Una mujer dio a luz a gemelas, pero una de las niñas nació muy débil, prácticamente no respiraba. Sin pensárselo, Agnes puso un pañue-lo sobre la boca del bebé y comenzó a soplar hasta que recuperó la conciencia y se estabilizó. “La madre me dijo que había sobrevivido gracias a mí y la llamaron Agnes.” No es la única que lleva este nombre en honor a la matrona que la trajo al mundo.

H ace unos años me la pasaba volando. Lo odiaba. Y por más que me-ditaba no encontraba la razón. No me drogaba ni me alcoholizaba, bueno, no mucho. Y tampoco era un futbolista aventándome con toda la intención de que me marcaran un penal. Y aun así, me la pasaba surcando los cielos una y otra vez.El primer vuelo fue en la fiesta donde pensaba reconquistar a mi exnovio. Quería llamar su atención y elegí un vestido atrevido. Al verme, mi escandali-zada madre me obligó a usar su fondo, lo que fue mi perdición, pues en pleno baile la prenda materna se fue resbalando y, en un giro, llegó a mis tobillos, me tropecé y salí volando hasta el centro de la pista. Y ahí estaba, en el suelo, tan sexy como Jessica Rabbit con el fondo de fuera. El resultado: un brazo luxado.

Dos meses después, en mi graduación teníamos que bajar unas escaleras enormes para recibir el diploma. Me imaginé que mi exnovio me vería

descender como princesa, pero me resbalé y terminé bajando como Dumbo, pero sin orejas que me ayudaran en el aterrizaje. El resulta-do: moretones en las piernas. Quince días después, haciendo bicicleta de montaña volteé para ver al exnovio, mi bicicleta se atoró en una roca y salí volando. Tuve que hacer fuerza con mis manos para poder sacar la cabeza del lodo, que afortunadamente no estaba caliente porque si hubiera sido así, seguro que no era lodo. The word “change” can instill insecurity and fear in most peo-ple. But, Rosemary Cloud isn’t like most people. As a newly divor - ced single mother, change defined her mid 20’s and set Cloud on a path that would blaze a trail for minority women in the tradi-tionally male dominated field of fire fighting.

Without knowing much about firefighting, Cloud responded to a radio ad in search of applicants. “I knew I wanted to help peo-ple, and I knew that they helped people. That was what I wanted to do.” It sounds simple, but from her first day on the training ground, it was clear that this wasn’t territory accustomed to ac-commodating women.

“One of the officers just told me over the phone, ‘Wear what you’d wear to work.’ So I showed up in a pantsuit with heels and a purse”—a first day mistake that gave the team fodder for months and still stands out as a distinguishing moment. “The next day I showed up in sweats.”

Personally and professionally, the pressure to perform was im-mense when Cloud realized, “I only had a job as long as I could keep up and do what I was supposed to do. So, that was a scary thought.”

Cloud’s protective crew did their best to shield her from ever having to go into a working fire. “They always tried to protect me and I would tell them to protect me by teaching me.” Learning took the fear out of the job. Cloud’s thirst for knowledge on the next rank’s duties kept her career on an upswing.

“I had a great support system. I advise any woman to have sup-port, and really—you need more than one group to fall back on. You need a loving, cuddly support group, and you need a hard core group that’s going to call you on whatever it is that you need to be called on.” In 2002, Cloud earned the post of Fire Chief in her home-town of East Point. Cloud did not realize that, at the time she was

doing it, this had never been achieved before. After a distinguished career with the Atlanta Fire Department, she became the first African American female fire chief in the country.

Reality hit Cloud hard while sitting at a table in a Master’s Degree program on Homeland Security. She was the only woman at the table when her eye caught a glimmer. “Every man at that table had a gold ring on his finger. A wedding ring! It just hit me, ‘Baby you have no one at home getting your laundry together.’ I’m sitting at the table do-ing the same thing these guys are doing and they have another half at home taking care of business for them. So, it’s never going to be equal in terms of that and a woman needs to realize that.”

Cloud would find another way to maneuver equality into the de-partment by putting together a standard that would allow everybody to compete on the same level, without roadblocks. “When I joined East Point, if you were a driver you could test for lieutenant, but if you weren’t, you couldn’t test to become a first level supervisor. What does driving a truck have to do with supervising anybody? So I changed that, and they got so upset about it because they knew they had to compete against more people.” The system of open competition, and allowing the cream to rise to the top, allowed for

more merit based promotion in the department. “Seniority should only get their first pick on their vacation. They should be willing to compete against anybody.”

Cloud empowers women by encouraging them to step up and take tests for promotion. “Women act like they are going to bake a chocolate cake and have to have all the ingredients in order for it to be a cake. When you get promoted to positions, there is a learning process—so what? You have to have a “so what” attitude against the people that are going to laugh at you for making a mistake be-cause they make the same mistakes!” Along with her training of-ficers, Cloud credits her then Atlanta Fire Department Chief, Winston Minor, for inspiring her to each new level. “My gratitude would not allow me to not do anything. You have to keep moving. Gratitude re-quires action.” Examining her historic career, Cloud is proud to leave the department better than when she inherited it. “I can pat myself on the back for the 22 community service programs that resulted in reduced fire deaths. Our fire prevention was increased. We changed some of the ordinances. The community service programs, and the fact that the cream did rise to the top and everybody was given the same playing field…I pat myself on the back for those things.”

Con sueños sin cumplir Ricky Martin, quiere volver

al cine, a la televisión y a Broadway


Hay una evolución y más sensibilidad, es menos obsesivo. Con obsesivo me refiero a cuando te obsesionas

demasiado con el qué van a pensar, qué van a decir. Creo me pasó con mi disco anterior. Acababa de publicar

mi libro en el que hablaba de mi intimidad. Y estaba obsesionado con que le tenía que gustar a la gente, le

tenía que gustar y si gustó algo, pero no es mi disco favorito. Yo creo que fue por esa misma presión. Este disco

fluyó tanto que al escucharlo hay un sentir que al igual viene con la madurez.

ricky Martin parecería inalcanzable, pero no lo es. Ni sus pro-pios sueños lo son. En 2014 el cantante puertorriqueño cantó en más de treinta presentaciones; fue jurado en dos programas de televisión, uno en Australia (donde reside la mayoría del año) y el otro en México; debutó como diseñador con su propia línea de ropa (colaboración con A Different Fur); grabó su nuevo disco y encaró las vicisitudes de ser papá de Matteo y Valentino.

Aunque tiene mucho en su plato, nunca lo encuentra suficien-temente lleno como para quedarse quieto. Ricky desea hacer un one-man show en Broadway, lanzar otro libro, producir una película y hacer música en inglés específicamente para el mercado esta-dounidense.

Con su nuevo álbum A quien quiera escuchar, Ricky regresa a sus raíces, a la balada romántica que le dio su triunfo… Así como su canción “Vuelve”, él volvió a esa fibra que según el mismo cantante lo acerca a su esencia.

Son aproximadamente las 10:22 a.m., cinco periodistas esta-mos a la espera de Ricky Martin. Tuvimos un encuentro corto, pero muy íntimo con el cantante en la ciudad de Miami.

“Hola, ¿cómo están? Gracias por estar aquí”, dijo Ricky.

La primera pregunta... llegó de él: “¿Les gustó el disco? Espero que lo hayan disfrutado, es algo que me tenía un poco ansioso”, continúa diciendo el cantante.

Y no es para menos que Ricky tuviera ese sentimiento. El proceso de este nuevo álbum A quien quiera escuchar, fue in-tenso. Las grabaciones se dieron en cuatro lugares distintos que incluyeron a Australia, Los Ángeles, Puerto Rico y la ciudad de México.

De acuerdo con el cantante, no se tomó tiempo libre para gra-bar, él simplemente lo hizo de manera orgánica, tal como surgían sus pensamientos. Si terminaba de escribir una canción, corría al estudio a grabarla. No canceló presentaciones ni los programas de televisión en los que participaba en ese momento.

Este nuevo trabajo discográfico tiene diez temas inéditos que conforman la versión original de A quien quiera escuchar, mientras que la versión de lujo cuenta con 13 canciones, e incluye cortes acústicos compuestos por Ricky Martin en colaboración con los reconocidos compositores Pedro Capó, Yotuel Romero, Yoel Hen-ríquez, Rafael Esparza Ruiz, Beatriz Luengo, José Gómez, David Julca, Johnny Julca y Jorge Ruiz Flores.


¿Cómo fue el proceso de la creación del disco? Es la primera vez que no paro para grabar un disco. Normalmente cierro el itinerario, y me meto siete u ocho meses para estar en el estudio. Esta vez, cuando llegaba la musa, páramos y grabábamos. Me gustó hacerlo de esta manera, y si me dejo llevar por la reacción de la prensa, los colegas y la gente que ya lo ha escuchado, pues para qué arreglar lo que no se ha dañado. Seguire haciéndolo así porque, uno, me gustó y, dos, fue refrescante.

Hablas de tu voz y la madurez se nota en este disco, ¿personalmente te encuentras ante esta producción así de maduro?Sí, tengo mis momentos en los que me deben castigar por si me porto mal (bromea y ríe). El entrar a hacer un disco como éste, estar rodeado con los productores y compañeros compositores con los que trabajé, pues yo simplemente lo que quería era contar mi expe-riencia; no necesariamente lo que he vivido en este año o desde el último disco, sino toda una vida de experiencias. Los compositores con los que trabajé me ayudaron a poner mis pensamientos en orden. Y creo que eso viene con la madurez; es no hacer lo mismo

Salió en el tiempo mientras hablaba con ellos, mien-tras expresaba donde yo estaba. Son tremendos psicólogos (ríe). Me encanta Australia. No sé cómo pasó, pero llevo ya casi trece


Yo sabía quién era hace mucho, pero en mi música me estaba encontrando. ¿Quién soy? Y volví a casa, a escuchar esa música, revivir la poesía cotidiana que me ayudó mucho en el pasado.

Pero el proceso creativo es caótico, no hay orden, no debe existir un or-den porque te limita mucho. Con un piano o un bajo fue que grabé después la producción. Lo que paso aquí fue algo muy acústico, en una atmósfera unplugged. Una sensación de crudo, “raw.”

Cuéntanos de “Adiós” y dinos cuál ha sido el adiós que más te ha gustado.Nunca es fácil decir adiós, nunca. Nunca es fácil y más cuando la otra persona es buena y fueron buenas experiencias. Ya no se pue-de usar la línea de “No eres tú, soy yo”. Pero para hacer una larga historia corta siempre hay que ser sinceros. Ahora la gente manda un text y terminan. No sé si sea la mejor manera de hacerlo. En esta vida uno quiere hacer amigos y la vida da muchas vueltas. Siempre cuesta decir adiós, unas más que otras.

Efectivamente hay una evolución en Ricky Martin, ¿pero aún es el clásico Ricky Martin?Yo quise volver a casa. Es una cosa personal. Es muy fácil dejarse seducir y querer entrar en ese rollo. Es como un alter ego: éste soy yo, pero sí me gusta, me gusta entrar en ese rollo. Por eso las colaboraciones con Wisin y otras colaboraciones que vienen próxi-mamente para el público anglo. Porque el público anglo dice: “Bien, muy bonitos los sonidos, pero queremos escuchar las letras”. Pero yo necesitaba volver a casa. Y como te dije, en el disco anterior Mú-sica, alma y sexo sufrí tanto en el proceso creativo tratando de ser y no ser y buscando mi identidad. Yo sabía quién era hace mucho, pero en mi música me estaba encontrando. ¿Quién soy? Y volví a casa, a escuchar esa música, revivir la poesía cotidiana que me ayudó mucho en el pasado. Como cuando trabaja con Franco De Vita, Draco, etcétera. También esta última gira que acabo de hacer en México me ayudó mucho, porque tengo un potpurrí de grandes éxitos de baladas. Y cuando empezaba el show, la sangre corría y al final la gente se quedaba sin voz y decía: “Ricky, éste eres tú”. Y bueno, vamos a cortarle las venas; aunque el disco ya estaba casi terminado, eso era lo que necesitaba. Y no hay nada afuera que se parezca a este disco en este momento.

¿Cómo es tu vida y la de tus niños en Australia? Se conocen todos los zoológicos del país. Tienen obviamente sus animales favoritos, entre ellos el ornitorrinco, que es un mamífero que pone huevos y nada. ¿No te sabías ésa? Y Australia es un país maravi-lloso para vivir. Lo malo es que está lejísimos y, probablemente, lo bue-no también. Es un país muy diverso con una gran comunidad latina.

¿Te reconocen?Sí, hay muchos colombianos, argentinos, uruguayos, chilenos, bra-sileños. No es broma, lo que quiero decir con esto es que es un país muy diverso y me ha abierto los brazos. Durante la primera gira

hicimos 19 conciertos, en el equivalente al American Airlines Arena, y fue maravilloso. Ahora empiezo mi gira en abril en Nueva Zelanda y de ahí seguimos a Australia, en el verano por Europa y por sep-tiembre en Estados Unidos. Me gustaría que fueran al show.

¿Algo que le falte a Ricky Martin por hacer?Quiero volver a Broadway y me encantaría hacer un one-man show. Me encantó el teatro. Y obviamente quiero hacer cine y estoy ha-ciendo algunas cosas muy interesantes como productor en la te-levisión, pero ése es otro rollo. Entre el lanzamiento del disco, ser papá, el lanzamiento del libro infantil y ahora diseñando ropa de hombre, es mucho trabajo.

¿Y por visitar? Me gustaría ir a Vietnam, pero de vacaciones a una buena playa.

Has recibido grandes premios, y con este disco que re-gresas a tu esencia, ¿qué premio te gustaría ganar y no sólo profesional sino también personalmente? Yo ya no puedo pedir más, todos los días digo: “¡Wow!”. Tengo muchos años haciendo lo que me gusta. Me sigue gustando, eso es muy importante; sigo apasionado por lo que hago. Tengo salud —debería haber empezado con eso—, mis hijos están bien. No hay nada que pedir.

After having hired closet organizers to do each of my young

daughters’ closets many years ago, I thought it was time for

me to get my closet organized. I interviewed and got estimates

from five different companies. I wanted my closet not only to

keep my stuff organized and together in an orderly fashion, but

also to be my little haven. After all, we do spend a lot of time in

our closets, whether we admit it or not.

Here are the steps I took to have the perfect closet:

The first thing to do is go through all your clothes and decide what goes and

what stays. The way I look at it is, if you’re not wearing it, there is someone in need that could benefit from that clothing. You can then feel good about cleaning out and being generous at the same time. The reality is, if you haven’t worn it in the last year, you are not likely to all of a sudden wear it now.

Secondly, separate the clothes into ca-tegories: slacks, dresses, skirts and tops. You

can then break these down into smaller group-ings, like pants and capris. Tops can be separated by long or short sleeves and even color groupings. Break this job down into smaller tasks at a time—you will be more likely to finish the job at hand if you don’t become

overwhelmed by the enormity of the task.

Once you get it done, you will be so pleased with the results that you will find yourself wanting to spend more time in that closet.

Esta novela sobre “realismo mángiko” invita a descubrir lo que hay más allá de la cultura japonesa,

el anime y mangas. Lo mejor es que no se necesita ser experto en este tema para entender la historia, ni tampoco

Y parte de lo que más tememos es empacar, sobre todo hoy en día que las aerolíneas han res-tringido el número de maletas gratuitas. Si empacar para la familia entera ya era suficientemente complicado, ahora tienes que cuidar el peso, si no terminarás gastando la mitad de tu presupuesto antes de que despegue el avión. Y bueno, aceptamos el reto, no es algo imposible. He aquí algu-nos consejos que harán el empacar me-nos doloroso.

No empaques al último momento. Días antes de tu salida empieza a se-parar los cambios de ropa que piensas llevar. Así tendrás tiempo de cambiar de opinión y verificar que llevas todo lo necesario. En lugar de doblar tus pren-das, es más eficiente si las enrollas.

Organiza. Puedes organizar de dife-rentes maneras, ya sea por color, por prenda o por atuendo completo. De esta manera, sabrás si llevas muchas prendas de un solo color, o quizá sólo pantalones y ningún vestido. Al des-empacar también será más fácil si lo organizas antes, ya que visualmente podrás escoger qué ponerte depen-diendo del plan del día.

No te tortures. Evita llevar telas que se arruguen con facilidad. En las vacaciones nadie tiene tiem-po de planchar. Si debes llevar al-gún atuendo especial, mantenlo en la bolsa de la tintorería; el plástico reduce la fricción y evitará que se arrugue demasiado. Elige prendas que puedas intercambiar para crear diferentes looks.

Comparte maleta. Si viajas en familia es probable que tus hijos lleven menos cosas, así que reparte el peso. Usa contenedores y bolsas para separar los productos personales, por ejemplo: vacía suficiente maquillaje en un con-tenedor de lentes de contacto; cubre la suela de los zapatos con un gorro de baño para no ensuciar tu ropa y guarda productos dentro de los calcetines.

Start out doing 3 sets of 10 repetitions of each exercise with 60- 90 seconds break between sets. As you progress in strength and cardio, you can add more sets and more reps. remember to never hold your breath. breathe in on extension of muscles and breathe out on contraction.

knee pushups- Kneel down on floor with knees together, and lean forward placing hands on ground just wider than shoul-der width and in line with your shoulders. Make sure that your shoulders, elbows, and wrists are in line vertically. Bend elbows to lower your chest towards the floor. Stop when you are about 3-4 inches off the floor and return to the starting position. Make sure your shoulders, hips, and knees maintain a straight line throughout the movement. Breath in through your nose on the way down and breath out through your mouth while pushing up to start position.

squats- Stand with feet just wider than shoulder width. Bend at the hips first and make sure to keep your head up, knees behind your toes, and feet completely in contact with the floor. Squat down. Then, push up through heels to starting position.

Bicep curL- Take an athletic stance (feet hip width apart, shoulders down and back, and chest up and out). Hold a pair of dumbbells (resistance band, bottle of water, or cans of beans) in each hand with palms facing forward and arms straight down at your sides. Bend your elbows, bring hands up towards your shoulders, and squeeze your bi-ceps. Lower and then repeat.

shouLDer press- Grab a pair of dumbbells (resistance bands, cans of beans, water bottle) and take an athletic stance. Bring dumbbells up to your shoulder with palms facing forward. Push dumbbells up over your head and squeeze your shoulder muscles (Front Deltoids) at the top of the movement. Control the movement, coming back to starting position and repeat.

Who’s this Saint Patrick anyway? Saint Patrick is the beloved patron saint of Ireland. Ironically, he wasn’t born in Ireland, but Britain. Kidnapped by Irish pirates and brought into slavery, he spent six years as a shepherd in his new country before escaping to France where he converted to Christianity. When he returned to Ireland as a missionary, not only did he spread his newfound faith, he also stirred larger than life stories of luck and legend, making him famous throughout the country.

St. Patrick’s Day began as a religious feast day, cele-brated on the anniversary of the saint’s death, March 17. Those who honor the faith tradition typically begin the day by attending Mass and then partake in Irish food, drink, and dance throughout the day.

Due to an American tradition kept alive by schoolchildren since the 1700s, the holiday can be wicked fun for people who enjoy pinching,

but not so much for those who forget to wear green. The legend of the leprechaun is said to be behind the practice. Leprechauns are mythical, shoe-making elves who look merry but actually delight in mischief, particularly pinching human beings. Wearing green, sup-posedly made St. Patrick’s Day revelers invisible to leprechauns, helping them avoid attention from the little green men. The myth turned into an excuse for mischievous humans to become the pinchers and into a dread for those who forget to change their

fashion and become the pinched. This March 17th, embrace the luck of the Irish.

Find a four-leaf clover, kiss the Blarney Stone, and above all, remember to wear green. But, if you

should forget and find a leprechaun pinch-ing you, here’s the other part of the legend:

catch a leprechaun and they will have to grant you three wishes or tell you where

they hid their gold–pro bably at the end of a rainbow.

There are many ways to celebrate the Celtic holiday that’s upon us. But, none better than the Irish affair in Savannah, where locals and visitors alike hit the historic streets for the largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the South. Irish dancers, pipe bands, and a variety of fun floats will fill the streets in this 190-year-old tradition that started as a military spectacle in 1824.

The festivities kick off on March 13 in the middle of Forsyth Park, where Spanish moss-draped oak trees line sidewalks lead-ing to the famous Forsyth Fountain. Family and friends gather in this picturesque park to get a glimpse of the Irish as they dye the fountain green.

The real parties get started on Saturday, March 14, with a four-day festival that won’t end until St. Patrick’s Day is over. These lively celebrations on River Street and in City Market will have enough green beer to quench your thirst and live music to keep your spirits high. Not only will there be multiple stages with live bands playing until the wee hours of the night, but there will also be all kinds of in-teractive games and activities for adults. The open-container policy is a little different this weekend and will require adults to wear $5 wristbands to carry their drinks around downtown.

Tara Feis to enjoy a free, non-alcoholic festival with authentic Irish performances and music. On the main stage, a line-up of Irish musicians, dancers and performers will take over, while puppe-teers, dance schools, and storytellers command the kid’s stage with tales of the Irish. This free festival even has arts and craft booths so kids can make Irish flags, potato prints, and castles out of sugar cubes.

The day before the parade hits the streets, the military does, gathering around the Sergeant William Jasper Memorial in Madi-son Square for the Jasper Green Ceremony, to honor their fellow comrades.

Then finally, on Tuesday, March 17, the parade takes place, one that can only be outshined by New York City and the Irish city of Dublin itself. The party is as grand as it is green, lasting from 10 a.m. until about 2 p.m., with as many as 15,000 marchers. This 191st parade is sure to bring on many more hearty celebrations, as Savannah continues to show that it is an old city infused with young energy. Underneath all the theatrics is an ode to the diver-sity of this country, and a tip of the hat to all those Irish immigrants who started lives here.

As a gesture to those brave and cheery souls, maybe we can all try to be Irish for a day.

only Frida Kahlo could pull off making her bold unibrow and mustache an iconic signature and even a branding lesson for today’s businesses. Frida Kahlo is considered one of Mexico’s greatest revolutionary artists. She was born in Mexico City on July 6, 1907. Yet, she claimed to have been born in 1910, not because of vanity but to coincide with the beginning of the Mexican Revolution.

She began painting after a terrible bus accident. Kahlo was impaled by a steel handrail, which went into her hip and came out the other side. She suf-fered several serious injuries as a result, including fractures in her spine and pelvis. Her body casts became her first painting canvas. About a third of the paintings are self-portraits. Her reason:

Although she lived and exhibited in New York, California, and Paris, and be-friended literary and artistic movement figures such as André Breton, Pablo Pi-casso, and Marcel Duchamp; Kahlo proudly kept homage to her Mexican roots with her unique fashion sense. Heartbreak, gender roles, miscarriages, states of mind, and her unconventional, yet passionate marriage to muralist Diego Rivera were common subject matters in her works. Conflicting critics catego-rize her as a surrealist or feminist artist. Kahlo’s art and life are an insight into the ongoing struggle for self-determination in the lives of women; controversial without a doubt, especially in a time when women had no voice.

As her health deteriorated, she continued to paint and support political causes. In 1953, Kahlo received her first solo exhibition in Mexico. Since she was bedridden, she arrived by ambulance. Kahlo spent the evening talking and celebrating with the event’s attendees from the comfort of her bed. Talk about cojones! Aside from all the pain she endured. “Frida Kahlo embodied alegría—a lust for life.”
