Exploring Frontier Worlds: Featuring Pluto and the Kuiper Belt (Grade 3-Adult) Join us for this summer under the dome of the Maryvale Planetarium for a short course about the Solar System. Discover the difference between the eight classical planets and the five known Dwarf Planets. We’ll investigate how Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930 and why it was ultimately demoted from the list of planets 76 years later. See some of the first images of hte New Horizons Mission, a spacecraft that’s been traveling to Pluto since January 19, 2006. Using digital astronomy media we’ll travel from the Sun to the cold regions of Neptune and beyond. We’ll investigate the latest from Dawn, Rosetta and MESSANGER and find out how these missions continue to help us better understand our neighborhood in the Milky Way. This short course will also use the planetarium to discover the current night sky. Come see the sun, moon, stars and constellations of summer season at the Maryvale Planetarium! (SPE-076)Tuesdays, (2 weeks) Begins 7/147:00-9:00 PMFee: $19; Maryvale Student Fee: $10Planetarium (across from Room 142 in the Middle School)Instructor: Paul KrupinskiMaryvale Graduate; Director/Owner, Mr. K.’s Mobile Dome Planetarium; Show Presenter/Technician, Strasenburgh Planetarium; Planetarium Director/Astronomer, Challenger Learning Center of Lockport.
Worlds Beyond Our Solar System: A Search for Earth-Like Planets (Grade 3-Adult) In five billion years the Sun’s nuclear fire stops and its outer atmosphere swells into a red giant star. The inner solar system planets will be vaporized, including the Earth, our home in space. Join us at the Maryvale Planetarium for a unique short course about the search for a new Earth. Using the discoveries of the Kepler Space Telescope, we’ll explore the latest information in the search for extra solar planets or exoplanets - worlds beyond our solar system. How many planets orbit other stars? How far would we have to travel to get to a different earth-like world? Is there another planet in the galaxy within the Habitable Zone - an area within a star system that could sustain liquid water? Using digital astronomy, we’ll answer these questions, plus travel to worlds beyond our own as we search for our new home in space. This short course will also use the planetarium to discover the current night sky.
