As you may already know, Fr Ken had surgery and spent some time in hospital recuperating earlier in the term. His recovery is taking a little longer than expected however and I am sure that he would appreciate our continuing prayers and support. Fr Ken hopes to be back before the end of the term. In the meantime our thanks is extended to Frs Huong and Lucius who have been gathering with our various classes each Tuesday and Thursday to lead them in a prayer liturgy in our school’s Sacred Space classroom. These liturgies will continue next term as well and we look forward to Fr Ken joining us for them and leading us in worship. I would also like to thank our Acting Assistant Principal – Religious Education, Kevin Yates for his great work in co-ordinating these liturgies for our staff and children. Cross Country Fun!! Last Thursday saw the running of the annual Catholic Schools’ Cross Country carnival at St Brigid’s school at Nerang. The weather was rainy and the track very heavy as our children matched their abilities with the children of our sister schools. Whilst we didn’t come away with the top prize we were able to achieve a very creditable second place overall in what were pretty trying conditions. I would like to thank Paul Hill and Jackson Elliott for preparing and looking after our squad on the day. I would also like to congratulate our children who kept putting in all day even during some reasonably heavy showers. These however, didn’t seem to deter our runners and as such they deserve extra credit for a great effort. Marymount Primary Athletics Field Days – Tuesday & Wednesday, 18 & 19 June This year we are trying something a little different with our Athletics Carnivals. We will still conduct our main Track day (sprints / 800m’s / ball games) on its own and this day will be held on Friday, 19 July, next term on the College ovals. Normally our Field events (Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put) would be done during lunch hours and as part of our normal PE lessons. This year though, we are going to try to run these events for our children who are turning 8 years to 13 years 2013 over the above two days. Notes have been sent home to parents of our younger children outlining these events and days and asking for you to nominate your child for chosen events. Our children in Years 5 to 7 will be able to nominate themselves through their class teachers. When we get all of our nominations in we will look to plot the events over the Tuesday and Wednesday and advertise these times on our website so that parents may come along to watch and cheer on the children. Your assistance in following this nomination process up with your children would be greatly appreciated. Please contact our reception if there are any issues which need clarification. Please note that these nominations are only for children who turn 8 this year and up to 13 year old. June Parents and Friends Meeting & Combined Schools Fete Meeting – Monday, 17 June Our next P & F meeting is set down for the above date at 7.00pm in our school staff room. We will precede this meeting with our latest Combined Schools Fete meeting which will begin at 6.00pm. We have changed this meeting date as next Monday, 10 June, is the gazetted Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday and school will be closed for the day. If you have any agenda items for this meeting please contact our reception or email them to [email protected]. Our P & F meeting is usually completed by 8.30pm. Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday – Monday, 10 June Please be advised that our school will be closed next Monday as we observe the gazetted Public Holiday for the Queen’s birthday. School will resume for normal routines on Tuesday 11 June. Road Safety I would ask that parents speak with children about Road Safety issues. As you are aware, our school is situated on a busy road and with two campuses to fill and empty twice each school day, there are many safety hazards. Children should be dropped off with instructions to cross only at designated crossings and with respect to the lights and instructions from our Crossing Supervisors. In particular, I ask that children not cross Reedy Creek Road at any area other than the designated crossings. State of Origin Fever It’s that time of the year again when football and Rugby League in particular seems to take precedence over the news of the world. Was there really a budget brought down yesterday? I think that JT’s cold or Mal’s fight with his best mate Laurie Daley have attracted more press than how much or how little is being spent on education, health, the roads and beaches. So to join the bandwagon here is my tip for tonight’s game – I think Queensland by 7. Don’t put your house on it however! Thanks for reading and enjoy the rest of the week and the long weekend. Annual Catholic Campaign – Silly Sock DayNext week is our Annual Catholic Campaign fundraiser. On Wednesday 12 June we will have Silly Sock Day! For a gold coin donation to the Catholic Campaign, students may wear silly socks with their normal Wednesday uniform. Funds raised support the various ministries of the Archdiocese of Brisbane.

Please remember that this day is not a free dress day and students are to wear their normal uniform – except for their silly socks!

The Annual Catholic Campaign gives us the opportunity to act together as one Church family to support ministries and services that no single parish or school can offer. Every gift, regardless of the size, is vital to the success of the Annual Catholic Campaign. Please come prepared next week to give what you can.

Beachathon BBQ Volunteers please – 20 June The Beachathon is only two weeks away! This is a fantastic day for our school and a major fundraiser for our students.

In previous years, students have enjoyed a sausage sizzle on their return to school and we are calling for volunteers who could help to cook and serve sausages. If you are able to help on the day of the Beachathon, please contact me through Parent Reception. More details will be available in the coming days.

Instrumental Music Program - Band Concert 11 JuneJunior & Senior band members will be performing in the Doyle Centre Theatre next Tuesday evening, 11 June from 6.30pm. Students in the Junior and Senior bands will need to arrive by 6.00pm for tuning and organisation.

This concert is an opportunity for families to come along to see and hear students performing in the school bands. To have a preview of what the program offers.

Junior and Senior band members will also be performing at Assembly (in the Shed) on Wednesday 12 June.

Woolworths Earn & Learn – Final Week! Many thanks to all families who have supported us by sending in their Woolworths ‘Earn and Learn’ points stickers this year.

But it’s not too late! This week is the fi nal week to earn points at Woolworths with every $10 purchase.

Please collect as many points as you can and encourage your family and friends to do the same. Please send any points stickers to Student Reception or place them into the collection boxes at local Woolworths stores.

Daniel’s granddad always told him that all he needed to do is work hard and do his best. His experience at Centacare’s, Blue Roo Theatre Company has been one of the best things in his life.

Daniel is so grateful for the chance to be on stage.

It’s not just about acting, it’s about building confi dence, having responsibility and meeting challenges. At the community centre, Daniel and others learn how to work together to achieve some awesome things. And they have a lot of fun together. Daniel is living out his grandad’s advice. He told Daniel, “You need to continue to better yourself as you get older.”

Your gift to the Annual Catholic Campaign will make a difference to Daniel and thousands of others who participate in the programs and services offered by the Church’s social outreach agency, Centacare.

Please show you care with a gift to the Annual Catholic Campaign.

Centacare helps create life-changing opportunities for tens of thousands of women, men and children across South East Queensland through practical and compassionate support to the elderly, the hospitalised, the unemployed, people living with disabilities and mental illness, prisoners and their families, seafarers, young people and families in crises.

SillySock Day

Next Wednesday

CybersafetyOn Wednesday July 31st, Term 2, we have scheduled a “CYBER SAFETY” presentation for the children in Years 6 & 7, and also to parents at an evening session. Mr Brett Lee is an ex-police offi cer who is an expert in the fi eld of cyber safety and speaking regarding the dangers of the internet, and useful strategies for parents and children will conduct these sessions. If you have the internet on at home, or anyone in your family accesses the internet or social media, then this session is a must for you to attend. More information will be available closer to the day.

WebsiteHopefully by now you have all had a chance to check out our new website. We are hoping it is much more user friendly. www.marymountprimary.qld.edu.auOn the front page are shortcuts to the newsletter, sport draws etc. We have also created a new link called “Event Day Info and Changes”. This will be where we post important last minute information regarding Sporting events, Assemblies, etc. Often rainy weather causes cancellations or postponements. By clicking on this link you will be able to see what is happening. This is updated where necessary, but more importantly on the morning of an event. This will save you time and also save you having to ring the offi ce.

GO QLD!!!!!

Have a great week, Tony.

SPORTS NEWSCatholic Cross CountryWell done to all our Marymount Cross Country runners who competed at last week’s Catholic Cross Country Carnival. The Carnival was held in very wet and muddy conditions at St Brigid’s Nerang.

Marymount was second overall pointscore to Guardian Angles Primary School. We also placed second in the Boys trophy and second in the Girls trophy to Gardian Angles.

Congratulations to all of our Marymount runners who competed so well in very tough conditions. Well done to all those children who have trained so well and attended so many of our before and after school training sessions.

Also thank you to Mr Elliott for his efforts and expertise with our Cross Country training.

Regional TennisCongratulations to Tyler Gilbert and Blake Weise who were selected in the Gold Coast South District Team. The boys played at the Regional trials last Monday at Hope Island but unfortunately missed out on making it through to the next level of competition. Well done boys.

Social Media Awareness - For Parents

Develop an overall understanding of how social media is used by children.

Understand what controls are available to help create safer accounts.

Gain knowledge to communicate with children about protective behaviours they can

adopt.

It is commonly advised that parents should be actively participating in their children's use of social

networking. Eyes Open Social Media has developed a range of workshops to help adults learn how to

navigate the sites that children in their care are using. We provide practical advice and demonstrate how

you can create a safer social networking environment for your children.

The Eyes Open Social Media Awareness Session is free for parents to

attend at St Michael's. Social media issues that children face and suggestions to reduce the chances of:
