Letter from the editor – Sue Thurlow

Congratulations to all the organisers, sponsors, volunteers, judges and participants of the

Fraser Coast 2* Dressage Championships (10th-11th August). It seems it was very successful and building on last year’s experience. Members of the organising committee recently met with MSEP (Showground) staff to review the event, and we are very pleased that a solution to enable earlier access to the grounds has been worked out. Many Thanks to MSEP staff for understanding the problem and working out a solution – and also for all the wonderful work they do in preparing the venue and arenas for the event!

This newsletter includes coverage of - Fraser Coast ** Dressage Championships

- Judging clinic with Mary Seefried on 31st August AND - September is a busy month with 4 days of MARC events

Keira McLeod Clinic 14th-15th September Shane Goodrum Showing Clinic 28th September T-shirt Spring Show 29th September

I hope that many members will participate in those events and make use of the opportunity to continue improving your horses training, or to get a head start preparing for next year’s major competitions. Read on, and good luck to all members for the next month!

Fraser Coast 2*Dressage Championships 10th-11th August Congratulations to the organisers and sponsors of this 2 star championship. Competitors travelled from as far as Townsville (!) and the Gold Coast, with record entries requiring 5 arenas. Unfortunately several of the higher level riders had to scratch because of illness and other circumstances, but still there were 72 riders and 82 horses and 255 tests ridden. Many EQ squad competitors attended and others too of high quality, which is wonderful for our local aspiring riders to be able to see such inspirational horses and riding. To be recognised as a 2* event certain criteria need to be met, requiring enormous amounts of organisation, which began immediately after the 2018 event. We were fortunate to have Karen Herald again as the EQ Technical Delegate, who ensured everything met the required standard, and who must have walked more than 100 km, checking on each of the 5 arenas, stables, gear checks, scorers, judges, secretary office, etc. 12-14 judges were needed daily. The event cost approximately $15,000 so we are very grateful to the supportive sponsors, and hope MARC members return the support to the businesses providing sponsorship.

Thank you bouquets were presented to some of the judges on Sunday morning

Judges Seminar with Mary Seefried - 31st August This Seminar was an initiative of, and funded by Equestrian Queensland (EQ) and Dressage Queensland (DQ). We were extremely fortunate that they offered to have it at Maryborough, and even more fortunate to have Mary Seefried to present it. Mary has been an internationally accredited 5* judge (highest possible level) since 1998 and she is also an internationally accredited Young Horse Judge. Among her too numerous accomplishments are judging at the Sydney Olympics 2000, Asian Games 2003 and 2006, World Equestrian Games 2006 (Aachen , Germany), and World Cup Finals 2000 and 2004. She has been on the Judges Supervisory Panel (JSP) at the Rio Olympics 2016, Pan American Championships 2019 and the recent European Championships 2019. I am sure there are many achievements that I have omitted. Oh and she is going to be the Technical Delegate for Dressage at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, that’s right, the person in charge to make sure everything is done properly at the Olympics! However the best part is that Mary is still very grounded and understands the needs of regional ‘grass roots’ folk like us in Maryborough.

Mary presenting theory to the group indoors

Thirty-six people attended from as far away as Gladstone and Nanango. Unfortunately we did have to cap the attendance, but are hopeful of similar clinics in future, especially as there was such a positive response from our region. Fifteen people expressed interest in becoming a G (Preliminary) level judge, and four attendees were already qualified F and E level judges doing a refresher.

Then we moved outside onto the hill and in the shade, to watch the demonstration horses

THANK YOU to the six demonstration riders, Madison Dunning, Casey Duffey, Luzette Leighton, Karl Malmros, Ellyn Parker and Lynne Larkin! It is the demonstrations that make the theory real, and so they are an essential part of the clinic. It can be very daunting to ride in front of so many eagle eyes, but they all did well, and we hope they also benefitted from the hints that Mary gave them.

Mary leading discussion about observations and scores as the riders demonstrate

Afterwards Mary said “I enjoyed giving the seminar very much – it is always satisfying when you have an enthusiastic audience”, and the attendees appeared to enjoy it very much too.

This illustration was not used in the clinic, but I think it is a good representation of ‘The Training Scale’ and the developmental stages of dressage training.

Inspirational or Astounding or both? At 5* Dressage events, (for example the Olympics, World Championships and European Championships) there are seven judges positioned around the arena, all the scoring is done electronically, and the scores from each judge for each movement appears on large ringside screens almost immediately. But before publicly shown, scores go to the Judges Supervisory Panel (JSP) Ipads, where they can be “corrected” if there is a very big discrepancy in scores (e.g. if 6 of the 7 judges scored a Flying Change as 4, but 1 judge scored it an 8, obviously that judge ‘blinked’ as the horse made a mistake in its Flying Change, and the JSP can correct the 8 down to a 4 before the scores go public). Mary was on the JSP at the recent European Championships and she was so impressed with the marks given to Isabell Werth in the final movements of the Grand Prix Speciale that she took a photo of her IPad! Look at those 10’s!

This shows the Judges’ scores for last eight movements of the test and the collective mark.
