MISSION STATEMENT

Mary’s Child Pro-Life Ministry agrees with the Catholic Church that the right to life is the first and most fundamental principle of human rights. As a gift from God, every human life is sacred from conception to natural death. The life and dignity of every person must be respected and protected at every stage and in every condition, and it is our goal to affirm, educate and participate in that defense of human life, particularly from the evils of abortion and euthanasia. 29th Annual Champion for Life: Introducing Rachel Hendricks

Rachel (Dougherty) Hendricks grew up in a faithful Catholic family in Matawan, NJ where regular Mass attendance, learning about their Catholic faith, and developing a sense of respect for each other and for all human life were the foundation of her family. She attended St. John Vianney High School, Holmdel, NJ and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in pre-medicine studies from the University of Notre Dame. After college, Rachel began a career with a large pharmaceutical company, first in sales and then in Training and Development.

In the midst of her career, Rachel was blessed to marry her husband Ed on June 1, 1996 at St. Denis Church, Manasquan. Upon the arrival of their first child Sarah in 1999, Rachel left this profession to raise their family. Ed and Rachel went on to have 5 more children, one lost to miscarriage. While at home with her children,

Rachel saw many opportunities to deepen her faith and to serve her local church community at St. Denis. Rachel became very active in local Catholic Bible Studies and ministries involving pro-family and pro-life efforts, such as Elizabeth Ministry and Respect Life Ministry. Rachel was also involved in teaching Vacation Bible School, teaching Confirmation Class, and

organizing a Catholic Girls’ Group. Over these years, Rachel became very interested in certain areas of issues relating to marriage, family and human dignity, such as stem cell research, contraception, natural family planning and Pope Saint John Paul II’s teaching on marriage, family and his teachings on the Theology of the Body. On occasion, Rachel has had

Page 8: Mary’s Child Pro-Life Ministry presents · Mary’s Child Pro-Life Ministry agrees with the Catholic Church that the right to life is the first and most fundamental principle of

Mary’s Child Pro-Life Ministry 8 29th Annual Champion for Life Awards

rewarding opportunities to speak about some of these topics to groups of adults, as well as to teenagers and young adults. Through these activities, Rachel befriended many women of faith who have been so important to her growth as a wife, mother and servant of our Catholic Church. She is so grateful for their prayers and friendship!

Last September, Rachel was hired by the Diocese of Trenton to serve in the Department of Pastoral Care, under the title Coordinator of Respect Life Ministries. In this role, Rachel is excited to assist and encourage the parishes and pastors throughout the Diocese of Trenton in building a stronger Culture of Life in their communities. She also hopes to help increase opportunities for awareness, education

and prayer regarding ‘life’ issues in our Catholic Schools, Religious Education Programs, and in other communities within our Diocese.

Rachel is very humbled and honored to be the recipient of the 2018 Champion for Life Award. She wishes to express her deep appreciation and

thanks for the love and support she has always had from her husband, Ed, and from their children, Sarah, RJ, Mary Rose, Henry and Lily. Rachel is also very grateful for her parents and siblings, who, through our experience as family, have taught her the true meaning of love, family and respect.

Mary’s Child Pro-Life Ministry is recognizing Father Martin Padovani for his nearly 60 years in service to all he encounters, especially the wounded and the vulnerable. As a licensed marriage and family therapist, Father Padovani has devoted his life to counseling and advising men and women who create and nurture the children of God.

Father Padovani is highly-respected books, “Healing Wounded Emotions” and “Healing Wounded Relationships.” He is a popular speaker and homilist. In his 27 years as a visiting priest serving St. Catharine’s parish, he has developed a loyalty among the parishioners who value his compassion, insights and delight in his candor.

We at Mary’s Child value his willingness to defend life from the pulpit, and many of us have heard his call for openness and compassion in the defense of the sanctity of human life. For all his works in service to the vulnerable and wounded, we are honored to award our 2018 Lifetime Achievement award to this remarkable priest.

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Father Padovani currently resides at Divine Word Missionary

in Bordentown, New Jersey. Ordained in1960, as a priest with the Divine Word Missionaries, Techny, Illinois, he earned a degree in Masters in Clinical Psychology at Iona Institute of Pastoral Counseling in New Rochelle, New York.

After completing his masters, he became Director of Vocations and public relations for Divine Word Missionaries, in Bordentown and later served three terms as Rector of the Missionaries. During this time, he was appointed by New Jersey Governor Hughes to serve for two years on the Divorce Law Study Commission.

Father Padovani sees religion and psychology as two fields that are complementary in the area of personal development in the individual.

He has been an active member of the Burlington County Mental Health Board, and has counseled patients as the Catholic chaplain at the Carrier Foundation, a private psychiatric hospital in Belle Mead. Belonging to the Council of Priests of the Trenton Diocese, has given him the opportunity to bring his service to many parishes in the Trenton and Metuchen Diocese.

Mary’s Child embraces the commitment of our bishop, Most. Rev. David M. O’Connell, Bishop of Trenton. Under the umbrella and with the guidance of the Diocesan Department of Pastoral Care, we accept the responsibility for assisting our pastors in this “defense of life” through prayer services, promoting effective legislation while working against anti-life legislation. Our ministry works tirelessly to raise awareness and organize fundraisers to financially support programs that support and protect human life, such as Students for Life, New Jersey Right to Life, crisis pregnancy centers, and shelters for homeless women who are pregnant.

Please join us in praying for a final victory over abortion, assisted suicide, euthanasia, and other victories for life.
