    January 1, TuesdayA fair page may all that is to be set down during this year be fair. This was a coldmorning about zero. We had a telegram last night from Mamie stating Mary M. wasquite well. Papa and I took our luncheon alone to day. Clara and Rachel went toCharlottes. Father McNulty celebrated 9 oclock Mass this morning. Father Gibbons andBishop Shanley left last evening.

    January 2, WednesdayThis has been a dreary day wind sleet and darkness. Judge Geo. B. Youngs funeral

    service occurred to day. Rev. Edwards conducted it. He will be buried in Edgartown byside of Mrs. Young. We received a cable to day from Mike and Gertrude from HongKong.

    January 3, ThursdayQuite cold. Very slippery after yesterdays freezing and raining so we went down town inthe Automobile. Coming back I called on poor Mrs. Lee found her too depressed. In theafternoon called on Mrs. Weyerhaueser, Mrs. Ward, Mrs. Skinner, Mrs. Field and Mrs.Farington. In the evening Clara and I went to Mrs. James Markers to meet MonsignorOster. It was a pleasant occasion. Charlotte and George dined here and spent theevening.

    January 4, Friday18 above zero at 9 a.m. Rather cloudy coming us this morning. I stopped at Mr. Newelsfound him Mrs. Morrison and David all at home. I am sorry Papa seems so troubledthese days; that is new for him. Papa spent this evening at Mr. Newels. Clara playedpool, I tried to.

    January 5, SaturdayNearly 30 above zero. Such a fine day one wanted to be out all day. Rachel and Claratook long drive. I telegraphed Mamie this afternoon as I have not had word of Mary forseveral days. Mr. Newel spent the evening with us.

    January 6, Sunday20 above zero at 9 a.m. Cloudy and raw. Clara and I attended 915 Mass at St. Lukes.Father McNulty thanked the parishioners for their generosity and consideration of himthe past year. Letters from Mamie, Ruth and Samuel. Wrote to Ruth and to Mamie.

    January 7, MondayA very mild day. George Slade came home ill to day of grip. Walter came from theWest this afternoon, says he was ill out there three days. Walter leaves for Michigan toattend Ore meeting. Louis leaves for the West to see what can be done to open up theR. R. blocked by snow. {written in Louis hand: A 22 coal and clothes [etc.?] 2

    January 8, TuesdayTen above zero this morning, but rather cold wind - very cold in account of wind in theafternoon. Rachel and I called on Mrs. Horace Thompson. Mrs. J. B. Rice dined with usand went with me to the Symphony Concert. Papa spent the evening at Mr. Uphams.

    January 9, WednesdayAt nine a.m. 5 below zero. Quite a busy day seeing to bills ect. [sic]. And began to sortand look over letters of several years. Went to Mrs. Armstrongs Tea for Mrs. and MissSpalding. Maud dined with us and she and I played pool later. I am so sorry for Papa he

    is so troubled about the snow blockade on R. R. George and Charlotte are both ill ofcolds.

    January 10, Thursday22 above zero at 9 a.m. Went to see Mrs. Lee and called on Mrs. Markoe also on Mrs.Eaton and went to see the Uphams to tell them of what Mrs. Smeall told me of Mrs.James and to say good bye as they are going to California leaving tomorrow. Papa wascheered this evening by telegram from West telling him of progress of opening the R. R.clearing the heavy snow.

    January 11, Friday8 above zero at 8 a.m. George and Charlotte some better. Quite a fall of snow to day.Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Upham left for California this evening neither well. Mr. Newel cameover and spent the evening. Walter came back from Marquette Mich. We took luncheonat Mauds to day to meet Miss Mary Perkins. Called on Mrs. Prince and Mrs. Morgan.

    January 12, Saturday6 above at 830 a.m. This is a glorious winter morning. The new snow is so dry that itglitters in the sun shine like diamonds. Surely fine winter weather here is perfect. Papagets more encouraging accounts in reports of opening up the R. R. in the Dakotas.Louis is out there.

    January 13, SundayWas quite cold in the morning but passed more pleasant as the day wore on. Wrote toMamie and to Ruth also to Lord Strathcona to thank him for Pheasants sent to us formthe other side of the water. And they came in fine condition. Just finished readingHawthornes Blythesdale Romance. How very different his style to the very modern.

    January 14, MondayA little above zero this morning. Storms and snow blowing continues in the Dakotas.Papa can not think of much else than the possible suffering for lack of fuel. A letter fromJim says he has had rheumatism again since his return from Okeetee Club.

    January 15, Tuesday10 below zero at 9 a.m. Georgiana has been with us since Sunday because Normanwas ill. And George and Charlotte have been ill a week but are better. Norman is somebetter too. Charlotte wanted us to send Georgiana home so we bundled her like anEsquimou [sic] and sent her home in blankets and fur.

    January 16, WednesdayCloudy and raw. Rachel does not feel well to day gave up and went to bed afterluncheon. Thinks she has grip. George has gone to the Office to day and Charlotte isbetter so is Norman.

    January 17, ThursdayCloudy and moderate. Went over to see Mrs. Morrison this afternoon. She is ratherdepressed at prospect of being housed during the winter months. Wrote to Samuel andto Mother Xavier to day. Mittie Porter came down to spend the day and night. Mauddined with us we played pool in the evening.

    January 18, Friday20 above zero at 9 a.m. Cloudy and moderate. We are praying and hoping for warmerweather West of us so that the R.R. may run trains with fuel to the Dakotas. Situation isimproving out there.

    January 19, Saturday30 above zero this a.m. A dark rainy morning turned to sleet then to snow. Towardevening wind changed and turned cold at ten p.m. nearly zero. Wrote to Miss. Watsonto Mother Seraphica this evening.

    January 20, Sunday10 below zero this a.m. 8. A very cold windy morning and a very cold day about 5 belowall day. We watched two fires last night from our bed room windows one on third streetand the other on Eagle and Chestnut Sts. Wrote to Mamie and to Ruth. Mr. F. B. Clarketook luncheon with us to day. The Dakota leaves Yokohama to day for Seattle. Cablefrom Gertrude this a.m.

    January 21, Monday12 below this early morning. 8 below zero at 8 this a.m. and snowing with some wind sovery disagreeable. Even the poor animals were to be pitied I thought this morning as wewent down town. Terrific wind storm at Buffalo N. Y. yesterday.

    January 22, TuesdayWas 22 below zero this early morning. At ten last night it was ten below zero, and at 9this a.m. 18 below on North Side zero on the South in the sun. Went to the Office withPapa it did not seem so cold. Letter from Ruth this morning. Mr. Geo. B. Harris and Mrs.Blithe came home with Papa to dinner and spent the evening. Clara and Maud went to

    hear.

    January 23, WednesdayAt 9 a.m. 1 below zero. Cloudy raw disagreeable morning. The afternoon wasmoderate. Went to see Mrs. Lee and in the afternoon Charlotte and I called on Mrs.Morrison and Mr. Newel. If this severe weather and heavy snow fall with wind does notcease in the Dakotas and Montana I do not know what the results will be.

    January 24, Thursday12 below this a.m. A sunny and beautiful morning in spite of the temperature.

    January 25, FridayVery cold and disagreeable raw day. Louis is on the way home but at best his pacemust be slow as the roads are not in good condition yet. George and Charlotte dinedwith us this evening. She and I played at pool.

    January 26, Saturday18 below at 9 a.m. This was a very cold morning no one loitering about the Streets. Aday for my hood. I am nearly always amused when I wear it it certainly attracts attentioneven strangers seem curious to know who the wearer is. We all took lunch atCharlottes. Mrs. Furness and Miss Brown were there.

    January 27, Sunday10 below at 9 a.m. A bright still beautiful cold morning. Louis arrived home late lastnight. Have not seen him yet this morning. Louis did not find such fuel or food famine ashas been reported in Press. Wrote to Mamie, Ruth and Gertrude. Papa leaves for NewYork this evening.

    January 28, Monday10 below this morning. House seems cold. A radiator frozen in one of the servantsrooms since yesterday. They will leave windows open too long for this temperature.Went to Charlottes at Tea time to day and met the Boeckmanns there. The children arebetter.

    January 29, TuesdayJust below zero at 830 a.m. Snowed in the early morning, has been a beautiful day.Sunday one of the radiators of a servants room froze, to day as they were getting thingsback in order, a water pipe burst and flooded Claras room. We gave a luncheon to dayto Mrs. Louis Chemidlin and twelve of her old friends. She will return to Mexico soon. Atelegram from Papa telling me he is safely at 8 East 65th Street New York.

    January 30, Wednesday10 below zero at 930 a.m. How the severe cold hangs on. Clara and I went to theSymphony Concert last evening did not care so much for the Orchestration. Miss Powellthe violinist was fine. Rachel and Walter went to the Theatre and were not very wellpleased. Went over to Home of the Friendless (an awful name for any place) to see

    Mrs. Schell to day found her busy and well.

    January 31, Thursday16 above. At last above zero weather. Busy doing I can not tell what, keeping thingsgoing and in place. Emma Gotzian took luncheon with us and stayed the afternoon toshow Rachel how to make baskets. I called on the Visitation Sisters and to see Mrs.Geo. R. Finch who has been ill. We shall dine with Mr. F. B. Clarke this evening at theAberdeen.

    February 1, FridayNearly 20 below zero this a.m. Mr. Clarkes dinner passed off well last evening. Mr. and

    Mrs. Campbell and Howard James his mother and wife were guests. Went to call onMrs. Jannary (Mrs. Elliotts mother) then went over to see Mrs. Morrison found Mr.Newel pretty well.

    February 2, Saturday10 below zero at 8 a.m. Unless the bear is an early riser he saw his shadow thismorning as the sun shines beautifully since 9 oclock. This is blustery day as well as verycold few were at Mass for Candemas service this morning. Dined with Father McNultyat Charlottes this evening.

    February 3, Sunday22 below at 9 a.m. Was 24 last night. At ten last night received telegram from Mike andGertrude they arrived back from Japan on the Dakota at Seattle yesterday. Wrote toPapa and to Ruth to day. Telegram from Mamie to day tells us Mary M. is quite well.George came up from Chicago this morning, returned there this evening. F. E. Wardwalked 9 miles yesterday in Dakota blizzard. To St. Lukes this morning.

    February 4, Monday14 below at 9 a.m. Will be bright day. We have had a message telling us that Mike andGertrude are on the way home from Seattle left yesterday. A telegram from Mike to dayfrom White Montana stating they were 9 hours late. They are now where they willencounter the most snow and the coldest weather. I have not been well to day.

    February 5, TuesdayAt 9 a.m. 20 below zero. It is reported that it was 30 below at 6 this morning, if that istrue that is the lowest temperature here this winter. A telegram to day telling us Papaleft for home at 2 p.m. Also a telegram from Mike telling us they are at Havre Montanaand are 17 hours late. They seem hopeful that the Road will be clear very soon.

    February 6, Wednesday10 below at 8 a.m.

    February 7, ThursdayNot so cold just at zero this a.m. A bright morning seemed cold enough when one was

    out. We have been seeking information of the incoming Oriental train from Seattle allforenoon as Mike and Gertrude are on it. Papa arrived home from New York thismorning on time too. Mike and Gertrude arrived at 1250 both very well mostenthusiastic over their trip to Japan.

    February 8, Friday10 above zero this am 9 oclock. And such a bright morning. All yesterday afternoon andevening were spent looking over things from Japan. They brought Louis and Maudseveral things. I got a fine Chuddah Shawl a doll dressed like a Japanese lady andparasol of bamboo and an ivory handle for a parasol. The children were bewildered anddelighted at every thing. Maud, Walter, Rachel, Mike, Gertrude Geo. Finch and some

    others went for a sliding party to Town and Country and took Supper there this evening.Mr. Ed. Young came in and showed us how pool should be played.

    February 9, Saturday32 above zero at 9 this a.m. Rather a busy day trying to help get Gertrudes things readyto be packed as they plan to leave Tuesday. The day has been very fine went out in theSleigh far as the Seminary in the afternoon. Mike spent the day in the Courtroomattending case against issue of stock.

    February 10, SundayAbout same temperature as yesterday. We all with Charlotte attended Mass at St.Lukes. Norman went with us. All but Papa and I took luncheon with Charlotte to day. Ias usual wrote to Mamie, Ruth and I also wrote to Mrs. Grover. In the evening severallooked over Japanese Books and albums in the Gallery.

    February 11, Monday14 above at 9 a.m. A pleasant day out side busy looking up and putting togetherGertrudes belongings. After luncheon Mike and Gertrude went to Crafts to have photo inwedding dress. Rachel and I went for a drive in the Auto far as Hamline. In the eveningall but papa Clara and I went to dine with Mr. Macpherson and later to the Opera TheButterfly. Col. Clough called in the evening. Clara and I play at pool.

    February 12, Tuesday22 above at 9 a.m. A legal Holiday here but not observed as such except inGovernment Offices. Girls went to an entertainment this evening and weredisappointed. Mike and Gertrude left for New York this evening. Samuel passed throughSt. Paul this evening but had not time to come up town.

    February 13, WednesdayBeautiful morning, by 3 p.m. a nasty wind from seemingly every direction. Rachel and Iwent for a drive and were glad to find shelter on our return. Played pool in the eveningwe feel that we can play a little better game now.

    February 14, Thursday10 above fine sunny day. A delightful afternoon. Rachel and I made some visits. Wecalled on Mrs. A. Lindeke Mrs. Phil McQuillan. I called on Mrs. Borup and Mrs. Gotzian.Papa had a trying afternoon at the Capital being questioned about his own affairs byany Tom Dick or Harry.

    February 15, Friday34 above zero at 9 a.m. Snow nearly all gone. Spring like morning. Papa was at theCapital all yesterday afternoon and will be there this afternoon again testifying in regardto Ore Deal.

    February 16, Saturday{Blank}

    February 17, SundayThis has been a spring like day. Louis and Maud went to farm and their Auto stuck fastthe other side of the Soo R. R. George Charlotte and the girls went also in our Auto theyescaped accident and got through in consequence of Louis mishap by going around.Mr. Newel came over to day.

    February 18, MondayA bright beautiful day but quite windy. Papa left for New York this evening. This has notbeen a happy day in the family as we all learn that George has resigned from G. N. R.R. This is not a well chosen time.

    February 19, TuesdayA delightful morning.

    {Following entries in travel diary until noted}February 20, WednesdaySt. Paul. Clara and I left home this evening for New York. It was growing colder to day.

    February 21, ThursdayChicago. It was cold last night on the way down. To day is bright but cold here. Wecalled on Gertrude Harris learned she is in New York. We leave on 20th Century at 230.

    February 22, FridayNew York. We arrived here two hours late at 11 a.m. Papa met us. Gertrude and Mikewaited for us at East 65th Street. Yesterday we went to Spaldings in Chicago to see a

    jeweled pendent George has had made for Charlottes birth day. Pink Tourmaline andAqua marine.

    February 23, SaturdayNew York. A cold day here. Clara indisposed from cold in her room. I stayed in all daytoo. Looked about the house for first time since it has been furnished partially.

    February 24, SundayNew York. Went to 10 oclock Mass at the Cathedral met Mike and Gertrude there. Mr.and Mrs. Thorne came in after their Church. Mr. Baker spent the afternoon with Papa.

    February 25, MondayNew York. Letter from Charlotte to day. So much snow fell yesterday that getting aboutis difficult to day. Ruth must be delayed by snow coming from Lenox. Clara is up andwas out to day. Wrote to Charlotte.

    February 26, TuesdayNew York. Charlottes birth day. This afternoon I went to see Gertrudes apartment and

    Ruths new house. Called at Jims Apartment 15 East 48th St. as he has been ill butfound he was he came and dined with us. Anson and Ruth came in too.

    February 27, WednesdayNew York. Thursday. Clara and I left on the 10 a.m. train for Washington. Mr. M. R.Brown went with us. Mamie met us at the Station and took us home for Tea and dinner.We had rooms at Arlington. Found Mary M. so well.

    February 28, ThursdayWashington D.C. We shall spend to day here leave at 625 p.m. for Jeckyl on Sea BoardR. R. Had to call on Dr. Bryan. I have taken little cold and Claras cold stays with her.We called on Marys Dr. Adams found him satisfactory. (We left New York Thursday).

    March 1, FridayJeckyl [sic] Island Club. Saturday. We arrived here just on time 130 p.m. The day is hot

    80. The club and cottages all full. Many old friends here. Mr. Brown returns to NewYork this evening. We drove down to Beach. It is as facinating [sic] as ever.

    March 2, SaturdayJeckyl [sic] Island. Telegram from Louis telling us Walter will go to Arkansas HotSprings to night. Telegraphed Telegraphed [sic] J. Jerome on his birthday fromSavanah Ga. Telegraphed Papa and Rachel.

    March 3, SundayJeckyl [sic] Island. A perfect day. We have no Mass to day. Bishop Doan is here. I spentsince hour on the Beach. Dr. Schauffler officiated for the colored brethren. Claras throattroubles her. I am getting rid of my cold but my digestion is poor food not good.

    March 4, MondayJeckyl [sic] Island. To day is cooler. Walked to the Beach in the forenoon. Drove in theafternoon. Went to Mrs. Kennedys to Tea. Dr. Schauffler there showed me three mostancient and interesting coins. The old Widows mite. The Coin of the Tribute and one ofthe coins like the Judas 30 pieces of silver.

    March 5, TuesdayJeckyl [sic] Island. Have just heard of Mr. Thos. Foleys death in St. Paul last Thursday.To day has been very hot. We took a long drive out in River R. and back via Beach andfound a few shells. Wrote to Papa Dr. and Mrs. Scauffler to day.

    March 6, WednesdayJeckyl [sic] Island. A very bright cool morning. Walked to Beach but wind was very highthere could not linger. Called on Mrs. Baker. Wrote to Mamie. Col. Latrobe and Mr.Cadwallader left to day.

    March 7, ThursdayJeckyl [sic]. A fine day, warmer. The Brownes left to day. Telegram that Papa leaves forhome to day. Telegram from Louis rather discouraging in regard to Dakota. She may besand at great loss, or may be lost! Wrote Mrs. Browne, Ruth and Rachel.

    March 8, FridayJeckyl [sic]. This is a hot day. We drove in the morning on Beach and found someshells. Telegram from Ruth says she will not be able to come to Jeckyl [sic]. Went in theafternoon to drive with Mrs. DeForest. Wrote to Mrs. Upham, Mrs. Morrison and toMaud.

    March 9, SaturdayJeckyl [sic]. A fine morning cooler. Wrote to Papa this morning. A letter from Papa today from New York. Wrote to Mamie and to Jim to day. Father John Dunn came overfrom Jeckyl this evening to say Mass tomorrow. We had the Kennedy the Pruyns theDeForests and some others to Tea to day. Bishop Doane called to day.

    March 10, SundayJeckyl [sic]. A warm morning. Father Dunn a Marist celebrated Mass a 630 a.m. to day.He is from Brunswick Ga. The day has been very hot and the little black flies havetormented everyone to the exclusion of every other idea. Wrote to Papa and to Jim. andto Louis.

    March 11, MondayJeckyl [sic]. This was windy cool morning. Dr. and Mrs. Mitchell with Mrs. Schuyler leftto day. Wrote to Mary M. this morning and to Mamie this afternoon. Took tea at Mrs.Porters this p.m. Met Mrs. Talmadge this morning.

    March 12, TuesdayJeckyl [sic]. A pleasant day walked to the Beach in the afternoon. Wrote to Ruth and toWalter. Took tea at Mrs. Schradys and dined with Mr. Lanier. With the [Twomleys?] is ayoung lady a triplet a Miss Croyden very tall and large her two sisters are living andmarried.

    March 13, WednesdayJeckyl [sic]. This is a hot morning. Wrote to Papa and to Charlotte had a telegramyesterday from Louis telling us Charlotte nurse Mary was operated on for Appendicitas[sic]. Flies are bad (the little black sand ones). Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy left to day. Wroteto Papa and to Charlotte.

    March 14, ThursdayJeckyl [sic]. This is a very hot morning but a breeze will come up and temper theatmosphere. Noon Mr. Lanier and Miss Bigelow with Kittie left to day. We were all sorryto lose them. Wrote to Rachel and to Gertrude. The Porters, the Blisses Mr. Lanier Miss

    Bigelow and Mrs. Thos. N. Page came in to Tea today.

    March 15, FridayJeckyl [sic]. Cloudy, cooler and some rain this morning. Wrote to Papa and to Mrs. Lee.

    March 16, Saturday{Blank}

    March 17, SundayJeckyl [sic]. A perfect day. I have been ill since Friday night. Some rain fall Friday andSaturday. Shall take a drive this afternoon feel better. Letters from Ruth Rachel andAuntie to day.

    March 18, MondayQuite a hot day but afternoon usually cools off. Letter from Mamie and from Gertrudeand Mike. Some shamrock from Ireland from Mike. Goulds Shradys, their guests andthe Munels in to tea.

    March 19, TuesdayJeckyl [sic]. A hot morning. We shall be busy to day preparing to leave tomorrow forWashington. Afternoon, we have just come in from our last drive on the Beach for thisyear. I gathered some shells for Mary M.

    March 20, WednesdayJeckyl [sic]. This is a hot morning here. We leave at 1045 a.m. Brunswick Ga. We drivearound here in the heat as our train does not leave until 736 p.m. It is very hot. Mr.Robert Lee Tailor died today suddenly.

    March 21, ThursdayWashington D. C. We arrived here this morning at 10 oclock after such a hot and dirtyride. Train crowded with Southern tourists returning North. We saw Dr. Adams andMamie called. We shall dine with her.

    March 22, FridayWashington. To find a hot morning here to day. This afternoon we went with Mamie andMary to see Cavalry riding at riding school. Dined with Mamie and Mary. 90 this p.m. inshade.

    March 23, SaturdayNew York. We arrived here this afternoon from Washington and found summers heathere too but not as hot as we left. Evening paper tells us it was 93 in Washington today. Ruth and Anson came in this evening.

    March 24, Sunday

    New York. We went to Jesuite church this morning afterwards Anson took for an Autoride to Yonkers. Rained a little to day, cooler. Ruth and Anson dined with us. Jim. camein the evening, not looking well. Papa and Rachel arrive in the morning.

    March 25, MondayNew York. Cooler and bright. Papa and Rachel arrived this morning on time Gertrudecame in from the Country. Mr. Baker called and spent the evening. Mrs. Thorne invitedus to dine, we shall not go out this week.

    March 26, TuesdayNew York. Ruth has taken us about some in her Auto. Postal cards from Walter fromHot Springs Ark.

    March 27, WednesdayNew York. A threatening day. After dinner Samuel and James spent two hours with uson way to Washington D. C. James has grown and changed too in looks. Mrs. Carterarrived to day sails tomorrow on Provence.

    March 28, ThursdayNew York. A summer day. All the girls and I went to the Cathedral to Mass. Afterwardsfor short drive in the park. In the afternoon Ruth took us for a drive and to the JesuitsChurch and to the Church of the Blessed Sacrament .

    March 29, FridayNew York. Very warm this morning and was hot last night. We attended service at theCathedral.

    March 30, SaturdayNew York. Quite like June very dusty. After mass at the Cathedral I went to do fewerrands at McCreerys new store. We went for a drive in park in afternoon. Papa left forSt. Paul this p.m. Jim dinned with us.

    March 31, SundayNew York. A cloudy cool morning. We decided to avoid the crowd and attend mass atuptown Jesuite Church. No crowd there. After ten oclock mass Clara went to thecountry in auto, with Anson and Ruth. We spent a very quiet Easter messages fromPapa, Maud and Charlotte.

    April 1, MondayNew York. Rained all last night and snowed early this morning. For some reason I wasnot not [sic] well last night. Clara is ill to day her throat again troubles her. A telegramfrom Papa telling us he arrived home this morning. Called on Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Jas.Choate, Mrs. S. Thorne and Mrs. Bliss this p.m.

    April 2, TuesdayNew York. Cold and bright this morning. Did a little shopping. Went with Gertrude toselect some kitchen towels ect. [sic] Called on Mrs. Selmes and on Miss Bigelow thisafternoon. Clara is better. This is Ruths wooden wedding day. Just telegraphed to Papa.

    April 3, WednesdayNew York. A very fine day. In the forenoon went with Ruth in Auto for a ride. Wrote toPapa, to Mrs. Upham and to Walter. This morning papers say Louis is elected Pres. ofthe G.N.R.R. Telegram from Papa to day says Mr. Newel pretty well but Asthmatic tripto Rochester postponed. Called on Miss Moore and Mrs. Newman. Very fine afternoon.

    April 4, ThursdayNew York. Quite a warm day. Clara is ailing. We think she has the grippe. A telegramfrom Papa tells us Mr. Newel is failing in strength which must mean that he is very low.Went to Madame Mornays to order dresses and have little interest in them.

    April 5, FridayNew York. Hot to day and threatens rain. Rachel and I took luncheon at Ruths theywent to a concert. I came home for Clara is still in her room. Wrote Charlotte and FatherGibbons to day. Jim. came in at Tea time. Papa may leave for here Saturday orSunday.

    April 6, SaturdayNew York. Cold this morning down to 32. I am sorry Clara does not feel much better yet.I went this morning to see Pauline and her baby, the baby is a fine little girl.

    New York. A cloudy rather cool day. Mike and Gertrude took luncheon with us. Jim.came for dinner this evening. A telegram from Louis tells us Mr. Stanford Newel diedlast night quietly at eleven oclock. Sudden to us.

    Hail storm early to day. Papa arrived this forenoon from St. Paul. Clara feels badly today. Samuel and James came last evening and dinned with us. James spent the nighttoo with us. Mr. Newel buried this afternoon at two oclock. James left early to day forschool.

    April 9, TuesdayA heavy snow storm all day. Papa remained at home all day. Clara is some better, morecomfortable less temperature. Mike and Gertrude were here at dinner he was not well.

    April 10, WednesdayStill cloudy. Snow nearly melted away. Papa and I sent pearl ring to day to Iris Biles

    from Clara. We looked at stable for garage and went out in Dr. Dixons car to try it. Spentan unprofitable afternoon at dressmakers. Clara had a letter from Mary M. to day.

    April 11, ThursdayNew York. A fine day. We have taken Dr. Dixons Auto. and Chaufferer [sic]. Clara ismuch better. Samuel came to day took dinner with us and Rachel and I went to thetheater with him to see Salome [Jane/June?]. He returned to Washington to night.

    April 12, FridayNew York. We went down far as Bleeker St. this morning, in Auto. Mike is better. Claramuch better to day.

    April 13, SaturdayNew York. A rainy day. Went to dress makers in the morning stayed home all afternoon.Papa and I dined at Mrs. S. Thornes in the evening. A letter from Charlotte this morning.Telegraphed Charlotte that Rachel could go aboard with them the 25th.

    April 14, SundayNew York. A bright pleasant day. After Mass went to the Park fro a drive. Mrs. Geo. R.Finch and Nellie took luncheon with us yesterday. Dr. Biggs came in this afternoon.

    April 15, MondayDr. Biggs dined with us this evening. Mike and Gertrude came here to meet him. Wewere sorry Mrs. Biggs failed us.

    April 16, TuesdayNew York. A dusty rather windy day. Went with Gertrude and Ruth to see a play writtenand acted by Spence old pupils. It was creditable. Archbishop Ireland called in theevening full of laying of Cathedral cornerstone. Dr. Stewart called too. Clara went fordrive.

    April 17, WednesdayNew York. Cloudy morning cleared to sunny day, but windy. Papa and I are going toWashington to day for a few days. Rachel is taking luncheon with Mrs. Cutcheon tomeet Miss Dinsmore.

    April18, ThursdayWashington D.C. Papa and I arrived here last night. Samuel and Mary M. came in toArlington to see us this morning she seems well. Mamie does not look well. We tookluncheon at Mamies. I drove in afternoon with Mamie and we dinned with them.

    April 19, FridayWashington . Samuel and Mary M. came after me to take a drive when we reached theirhouse we found Mamie was ill suffering considerably with intercostals neuralgia. Spentthe day quietly at Mamies. Mary and I drove to Soldiers Home. It is a very cold day forthis season.

    April 20, SaturdayWashington D.C. Mamie seems more comfortable to day. I drive about with Mary andSamuel in forenoon. Called on Mrs. Finley and left cards and the Schleys. Tookluncheon with Samuel and Mary. He goes to Chicago to day to his uncles funeral. Andwe leave for New York at 3 p.m.

    April 21, SundayNew York. We arrived here last night at 9 oclock. For the first time in our experience theelectric lights failed us last evening. This is a cold morning but bright. This afternoonRachel Ruth and I went to 16th St Jesuite [sic] Church to see Pauline Emmets babychristened. Ruth the God mother Judge Keough the God father.

    April 22, MondayNew York. A perfectly delightful morning. Went down town with Papa and to call on Mrs.Baker. (Geo. F.). In the afternoon Clara and I called on ten friends found Mrs. Geo. C.Clark at home she sails tomorrow. We also found Mrs. Cutcheon and Mrs. Dinsmore athome. Mike has taken the Jackassi house for the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Elliott calledthis evening.

    April 27, SaturdayA telegram from Mike from Memphis saying they were well. Samuel here to day. Onway back to Washington after seeing James at Middlesex School he dined with us thisevening.

    April 28, SundayNew York. Rather cold morning. Papers tell us heavy snow interrupts street car serviceyesterday in St. Paul and Minneapolis. Delays trains and causes wrecks in the Dakotas.

    April 29, MondayNew York. The Auto was out of order this morning so walked down town. Clara and Imade [Maud/Mand?] calls this afternoon. Called on Mrs. Osborne, Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs.D. W. James and Mrs. Geo. F. Baker.

    April 30, TuesdayNew York. Stayed in this afternoon. Mrs. Dahlgren came Lucy has had typhoid fever.Mr. Dickerman called this evening, told us of his country place.

    May 1, WednesdayNew York. We looked about to day, at clocks and so forth. One sees so many that onebecomes hindered and takes nothing. Maria Taylor came in this afternoon lookingwell. Mr. Schley called this evening.

    May 2, ThursdayNew York. All this week has been threatening and foggy rather cold some rain. Clara,Ruth, and I went to the museum and looked at the Morgan Tapestries the Morgancollection of Chinese porcelains and at the collection of laces there. We Clara and Idined with Mrs. Thorne and Mrs. Ed. Thorne and their son there.

    May 3, FridayNew York. Weather some brighter this morning. At 1030 a.m. Clara, Ruth and I startedfor Convent Station in Ruths Automobile at Chatam we were delayed by a flattened tire.We arrived at the Convent at 130 p.m. found Mother Xavier looking well but aged. Wealso found a new Hall Reta Hall for the college students. Also new chapel in process oferection quite large.

    May 12, SundayThis is a hot morning. I went out to St. Lukes to eight oclock mass. It was 85 in shadethis afternoon and no air stirring. Not a leaf on a tree yet, lilacs just bursting forth, grasshardly green.

    May 13, MondayDark and cold again this morning. Everything looks so dirty, grimy and in need ofskaking [sic?] up after the winter but this weather does not invite house cleaning. Aletter from Charlotte written aboard The Amerika before reaching Plymouth she notcomfortable. Rachel reported good sailor. Weather about so, so.

    May 18, SaturdayWe have had three rather fine days now and vegetation shows the effects. Clara and I

    spent a good part of this afternoon with Papa looking at pretty things at his office. I havebeen out at the Good Shepherd Sisters this afternoon poor things they have a heavyload to carry.

    May 19, SundayThe double birth-day of the two Louis. Papa and I took luncheon at Louis. Norman andGeorgiana were there also. Afterwards we went to North Oaks with them. The farmlooks in fine shape but the cold late season forbids vegetation. Every thing out thereready for warmer weather.

    Quite cold this morning - not quite 40 at 9 a.m. Letters from Mamie, Mary, Charlotte,Rachel and Walter. Charlottes from Paris. Rachels from Aix les Baines. All well. Tryingto do some cleaning after the winter, began to 1st and 2nd floors to day.

    May 28, TuesdayA really beautiful day. Clara and Catherine Abbott are making the most of the invitingweather. Selecting some ornaments to send to New York house enough is enough inany house, if taken care of. The trees are finally putting forth foliage, but there will notbe any blossoms for Decoration Day this year. Maud and the children moved to the farm

    to day to North Oaks.

    May 29, WednesdayWe are quite busy to day cleaning Dining room on first floor and sitting room on secondfloor - and making some plans for Papas dinner tomorrow night.

    May 30, ThursdayThis morning cloudy but not cold. Norman and Georgiana came early to see if I wouldtake them out the cemetery as they remembered going with me last year I took them.The cemetery was full of people - and beautiful flowers. Mr. George Harris came homewith Papa this afternoon. I went with them to North Oaks and saw Minnie Oaks there

    looking so well.

    May 31, FridayStill cloudy and little rain. Papas dinner passed of well last evening. Mr. Fairclaughplayed on the organ during the evening.     June 10, MondaySuch a wet day, rained all day. A discouraging coming in of new moon. Busy seeing tohaving ornament gathered to pack for New York House. Papa went East with Jim. andMr. Kelly this evening. Jim looks poorly, and this is most trying weather for him. Walteris here. Roads North Oaks very bad.

    June 11, TuesdayAnd still it rains with little appearance of clearing. I managed to get out to GoodShepherds House. Clara went to Visitation Closing Exercises and home in admiration ofArchbishop Ireland and disgruntled at Father Phelens remarks. I called on Mrs. Adams,Mrs. Hook and Miss Hook. Judges Sanborn and Adams called this evening.

    June 12, WednesdayA cloudy threatening day turned to a fine late afternoon. It has been a busy day. Mr.Pierce the Boston photographer came at two to take Norman and Georgiana. Clara toowas photographed. Mr. A Paget with Marquess Anglesey and Mr. Chas. Gordon called

    this afternoon. The English gentleman on way to Yellowstone Park. Wrote to Racheland to Charlotte.

    June 13, ThursdayA really perfect day. Busy all forenoon making preparations for a luncheon I give thevisiting judges wives to day. The lilacs are at perfection now and more beautiful thanordinarily. The white ones are unusually profuse.     June 14, FridayAnother fine day. Flag day. Mr. Secretary of War Taft in town to day. He was taken ill atFort Snelling and was unable to attend laying of Y.M.C.A. cornerstone which A. B.Driscoll layed [sic]. A banquet of two thousand [came/crowd/corus?] and men greetedhim in the evening at auditorium in the evening. A crowd of ladies in galleries hemanaged to appear there and spoke to five thousand or more on Panama Canal. Claratook Norman and Georgiana to North Oaks in morning, I went in afternoon took Mrs.Finch. The lilacs were and are glorious, and more profuse than ever.

    June 15, SaturdayBusy all day. Went over to Mauds in the evening to see Minnie Oaks and Maud beforethey leave. Mr. Toomey came in before he left for Montreal on way to St. Johns River.He brought me bills recipted [sic] of Sisters debts to men here on trade. Took Mrs. Leeand Miss Wallace for a drive to see lilacs on boulevard.

    June 16, SundayGrew very hot last night. At 830 this a.m. it was 74. We spent the day at North Oaks andit it [sic] was above 90 there in early afternoon. Maud and Minnie Oaks left for Seattle

    June 17, MondayTo day not so hot but warm enough. I went out to Good Shepherd Sisters with some

    work they were happy quietly. Mrs. Hook and Miss Hook called this afternoon beforeleaving for Leavenworth rained this afternoon. Spent this fore noon mostly in Basementseeing to cleaning there.

    June 18, TuesdayCloudy and cooler. George telegraphs the children they will be at home Friday a.m. Thisevening Walter was part of a fearful accident. A Mr. Fred Schroeder went with him in hisAuto. to Minneapolis. Returning when on Summit near Bridge suddenly Mr. Schroederthrew up his hands and fell out of the Auto on his head. Walter turned around and gotback to him in a very short space. Called to him getting no response called for help,sent to telephone for Dr. and telephoned himself for an ambulance. Mr. S. died almost

    immediately. A Mr. Peter Grant brought Walter home in most excited condition. It is alldreadful.

    June 19, WednesdayNorth Oaks. Walter got scarcely any rest last night, nor did any of us. Mr. Macphersonstayed with Walter. This evening Mr. Mac- - Walter and I came out here Clara camewith us. Mr. Schroeder is thought to have had a stroke. As he had a previous stroke ofparalysis and was disabled.

    June 20, ThursdayNorth Oaks. This has been a most perfect day, here. So quiet and peaceful all around.Walter got some rest last night. Norman and Georgiana spent the day here. Clara wentto town with them this evening to be in town in the morning to meet Charlotte andGeorge on their return.

    June 21, FridayNorth Oaks. A cool morning turned to hot afternoon and stormy afternoon and evening.Mrs. Raguet, George and Clara came out for luncheon. Mrs. R. stayed all night. Papaleft New York to day for Montreal and sails tomorrow morning from there for St. JohnsRiver. Busied myself out here experimenting with rhubarb wine.

    July 6, SaturdayCame in to town this morning to see to some things. Strawberries at North Oaks are finethis year, indeed the whole garden is a pleasure to look at. Now we have peas, beetslettuce onions.

    July 7, SundayAfter church this morning I returned to North Oaks. Mrs. Morison Ben., Stan. and Dan

    Morison with Margery Morison are Mauds guests. We have taken Dan and Ben overwith us. Horace Thompson and Mrs. Thompson are spending the day with Maud. Mr.and Mrs. Upham and Grace and her children drove over from White Bear this afternoon.

    July 8, MondayNorth Oaks. As Mike and Gertrude are going to Duluth we shall go to town with themthis afternoon. They dine with Charlotte this evening. The sweet peas are bloomingprofusely out here.

    July 13, SaturdayA very hot day. I was busy in morning hours replenishing my own needs as to materialsfor white sewing. After luncheon Gertrude Phelps brought Mr. Horrigan and announcedher engagement to him. I was pleased with his appearance. Telegram to day that Papawill arrive in New York this evening from St. Johns River.

    July 14, SundayRained last night and there was accompanying electricity. Warm this morning andcloudy. Rachel has a sore throat. Walter is staying at White Bear Lake at Mrs. Ordwayshouse has been there for the Regatta.

    July 15, MondayA delightful day after last nights storm and down pours; three inches of rain fell in samenumber of hours. The horse Stable at North Oaks was struck in two places last night bylightening [sic]. The heavy rain following so soon saved it. Clara, Charlotte and I spentto day at North Oaks. I went out to put strawberries in jars.

    July 16, TuesdayThis is a fine summer day. Making current jelly this forenoon. Walter left for Montanathis afternoon. A telegram came yesterday from Samuel from Seattle saying James hadentirely recovered on the way. Stan Morison and Ed Young dined with us this evening.

    July 20, SaturdayQuite a hot day. After coming back from leaving Papa at office covered jelly glasses.The sun finished the jelly all right. This evening Papa and I took quite a drive in Autoalthough weather was threatening. Out to River and over to Fort Bridge and back.

    July 21, SundayThis was a discouraging early morning very sultry, so humid rained nearly all last night.Papa is in St. Paul fifty one years to day. At 1130 a.m. he and I started for North Oaks,we took luncheon and dinner there. I think Papa was pleased to see all looking so wellattended to.     Georgianas 4th. birthday. We went out to North Oaks to take luncheon in honor of theoccasion. It has been a most disagreeable day so very windy and rather cold.

    August 18, SundayThis morning hot and threatening. So windy too but so sultry - and hot - 86. Papa and Iwent out to North Oaks at 5 p.m. and just got back before a tremendous storm brokeelectricity wind and heavy rain.

    August 19, MondayA very cool day. We are all with Catherine Abbott went out to North Oaks in theforenoon. Louis and Papa arrived in time for luncheon at Louis. Louis presented abeautiful loving cup with date of our marriage and to days date also dates and names ofall our children and grandchildren.     August 20, TuesdayA perfect day, so clear and fresh after natures upheaval. Sunday nights storm was verysevere and disastrous in several places. Lightning struck the stable at North Oaks insame place as before. We all came in from North Oaks to day for a few days. Normannot well so Charlotte stayed.

    Tried to make apple jelly to day, apples so far it was a failure. In the afternoon CatherineAbbott Rachel and I started in Auto for Rosemount. When 12 miles out punctured a tireso sat 2 1/2 hours on the road.

    September 16, MondayPapa, Jim. and Clara arrived from New York last night all well. Jim. weighing 155 lbs.and looking more like his old self than for a long while. This is Papas 69th. birthday. Thefamily here dined with us this evening all but Walter he is off hunting with Mr. Barrows.

    September 17, TuesdayWeather the last week and at present far from pleasant. Threatening, windy and cloudy- heavy rains too. My throat troubles me - and I have not been well for a couple days.

    October 1, TuesdayA dark day, rained nearly all day, not so cold yet we started a fire in the furnace to day.The house seems so dark and chilly. Rachel busy to day trying to make jelly of poorplums, and unripe grapes a difficult performance.

    October 5, SaturdayThe girls and I had a fine drive to day in the Auto out to Phalen Park, White Bear Lake,the Island. The foliage on the Island is in describably [sic] and gorgeously beautiful. Onthe way over to the Rice St. Road we saw the most glorious sunset imaginable. I wentto see Monsignor Oster at St. Josephs Hospital to day, he is very ill.

    October 6, SundaySuch a delightful morning one seldom experiences. After mass I went to inquire forMonsignor Oster found him slightly more comfortable. We went out to North Oaks andreturned for luncheon. Mr. Geo. Harris is staying with us.

    October 7, MondayMaud was operated on this morning at Rochester, Minn. by Dr. Mayo for gall stones andappendicitis - Successfully we are told.

    I feel very busy and am doing little this week so many interruptions occur. Life is notpeaceful plan as one may. Good reports from Maud to day. Ottina Nigard operated onat St. Lukes Hospital to day. Monsignor Oster some better.

    We went with Mr. Joy in an 1908 Packard car to Fort Snelling - Katherine, Clara and I. Itdid run nicely. Gertrude went East this evening. Every seems interested and pleasedwith Walters engagement to Dorothy Barrows.

    October 16, WednesdayWe went to the farm at North Oaks this forenoon. Katherine Rachel and I took luncheonthere, Charlotte and the children were there. We came home in time to dress and go toMiss Jessie Greens coming out tea. Louis came up from Rochester to day, Maud isdoing well.

    A perfect morning and so warm. Went to Louise Carys wedding reception in theafternoon and in the evening to Mrs. Schultze coming out party for her two daughters.Found Ottina much improved to day.

    Mendota and on to Blooming Prairie and back via Fort Snelling. A beautiful ride. Laterwe went over to Mrs. Geo. R. Finchs to the coming out of the Misses Mathews.

    October 25, FridayColder, but delightful. We had an early luncheon and then went over to West St. Pauland out the German Road to Rich Valley and home via Rosemont. A pleasant lovelyride. Then I went to Mrs. J. H. Sanders to assist at the coming out of Helen Sanders.

    December 16, MondayI am sitting up for first time to day. Gertrude came over from her little hospital. Rachelvery ill. Ruth is all right again.

    December 17, Tuesday

    Papa returns from Washington. Jim. had such an acute attack of sciatica last eveninghe could not walk home. Poor Rachel still ill but some more comfortable. I dressed today.

    December 18, WednesdayPapa and I selected silver for Dorothy to day. Tea service and flat silver also gifts forMamie and Mary M.

    December 19, ThursdayPapa went with me to Block Star and Frosts to have my pearls restrung this morningand selected an olovene [sic] pin and a beautiful neck ribbon of diamonds for Dorothy. I

    selected china and glass for bride.

    {large diary}December 22, SundayPapa and I returned home to night at ten oclock coming directly from New York, we leftthere at 3 p.m. yesterday. We left Rachel ill of grip. Clara stayed with her. I am glad tobe home although weary and not strong.

    December 23, MondayWas too fatigued to sleep last night managed to get the tree trimmed this afternoon.Maud does not look well.

    December 24, TuesdaySt. Paul. We had our tree this evening as usual and the little ones had supper here.Papa and I are alone for the evening so we went over to Louis for a short time.

    December 25, WednesdayA most perfect day. Snow enough fell yesterday to cover all defects and to day whilecolder is glorious. I went to St. Marys to high Mass, Charlotte went with me; Louis andLittle Louis attended also. We shall take luncheon at Louis and all Dorothy included willdine with us this evening.

    December 26, ThursdayI feel better each day stronger and my head troubles me less. Maud is in her room today. Jerome is not well. Charlotte has her tree to day. I called on Mrs. Eaton and Mrs.Gotzian on my way to Charlottes.

    December 27, FridaySome colder, yet pleasant. After leaving Papa down town I went out to the GoodShepherd Sisters. Charlotte took luncheon with me. As Maudie was ill on Christmas eveI had her and all the children come over we lit the tree then dismantled it and thechildren bade it good bye.
