Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: A Blessed Feast of the Ascension to you all. I wish to congratulate all our Mary Star of the Sea High School Seniors who graduated this past week. We are most grateful to all who helped to prepare these young people for their next phase is Life’s Journey, especially Ms. Dever, Fr. Nick, and all the faculty and staff. Please keep all these young people in your prayers and Masses. Below is an excellent article on Why Satan hates the Ascension. I hope you find it helpful. Have a Blessed Week.

Fr. Harrigan - The Pastor

The Ascension of the Lord - By Matthew Coffin

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Forty days after his Resurrection, Christ ascended into heaven. His Ascension marked the end of his earthly ministry. Having conquered sin and death, Jesus ascended to receive the glory due him [Philippians 2:8-11], mediate on our behalf [Hebrews 9:24], send the Holy Spirit promised at the Last Supper [John 16:7], and prepare a place for us in eternity [John 14:2]. Immediately following the Ascension, an angel informs the disciples that Christ’s Second Coming will occur in the same way. According to the Catechism [668], "Christ's Ascension into heaven signifies his participation, in his humanity, in God's power and authority." Our Lord’s Ascension bridges his Incarnation in humility with his coming again at the end of time as King and Supreme Judge of the universe. Since his Ascension, Christ’s glorified body has sat at the right hand of the Father. The divinization of Christ in his incarnate body has profound implications for us. Jesus is the Exemplar, par excellence, of how we should live and what we ought to do. He also reveals our destiny, if we persevere in love.

Christ's bodily Ascension prefigures our own life in heaven not simply as disembodied souls, following death, but as the union of our glorified bodies with our souls at the Final Judgment. Christ’s sacrifice on the cross redeemed us. His Ascension assured the restoration of all creation to God’s design. St. John Paul II observes that our experience of heaven will far exceed the state of perfect bliss known by our first parents before Satan’s temptation. Satan’s lie in the garden condemned humanity to lives of sin, drudgery and inexorable physical death. Prior to the Fall, the created world and everything in it functioned precisely as God intended. It was in short, Paradise.

We don't often think of it this way, but before the first sin, the entire world was a temple in which human beings worshiped the one true God. Man fully possessed original goodness and original justice. With Adam’s sin, the world at large stopped being a temple. It became necessary to build a temple where God could be worshiped. Moreover, man had to purify himself before entering this sacred space. Everything in the created world was profaned including human nature, our relationship to beauty, truth and goodness, our relationship with the natural world, our relationships with each other, and our relationship with God. Paradise was lost.

Satan hates Christ’s Ascension because, by virtue of it: 1. The effects of Satan’s lie are undone. 2. In eternity, the one thing Satan seeks to hurt most, namely human beings, will be elevated to a dignity and intimacy with their Creator far greater than that experienced by Adam and Eve. 3. Christ’s Ascension promises that the souls of the virtuous will be reunited with their glorified bodies.

In his Ascension, Jesus incarnate makes possible and prefigures our ultimate Summum bonum. Following the Last Judgment, the good will enjoy the Beatific Vision, see God face to face, and experience perfect happiness. Salvation history will cease, having achieved its ultimate purpose, love will triumph over evil, and darkness will be no more. Christ's Ascension sounds the death knell for sin, reminds Satan his days are numbered, and justifies our hearts’ deepest longings – giving our prayers, works, joys, and sufferings a divine purpose – so that we may love and serve God with infinite hope in this life until we live with Him forever in the next.

Prayer Intention of The Holy Father for the

month of June

The Mode of Life of Priests That priests, through the modesty and humility of their lives, commit

themselves actively to a solidarity with those who are most poor.

We extend an invitation to all who would like to join our Lectio Divina group on June 4 in the Convent chapel from 9:00 – 10:00 am. Lectio Divina is a

prayerful reflection on a Scripture passage. The text for each meeting is the gospel from the previous Sunday. On June 4 we will use Luke 24: 46-53. There is a growing interest in this ancient form of

prayer and it will be to our benefit if we open ourselves to it. Hoping to see many of you at the next session.

June 1-2

If you hear concerns about boundaries, speak up Parents can learn a lot about their children, and their children’s friends, simply by keeping conversations going whenever possible — after school carpool, snack time, field trips, etc. Pay attention to any conversations that leave you feeling unsettled, and know when it’s important for you to speak up. For example, a child’s friend may tell you she doesn’t like her new history teacher, or he makes her feel uncomfortable. Even if you don’t know the teacher personally, it is well worth communicating the concerns the child has to the school. It can be easier to pick up on levels of discomfort or unease in children rather than watching the adult in question. To learn more, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Communicate Your Concerns about Boundary Issues, Too” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/ protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online- Articles.aspx. Junio 1-2

WEEKEND IN PARADISE

How the Apostles were Martyred…

St. Thomas: According to tradition, St. Thomas was killed at Mylapore, near Chennai, in 72 and his body was interred there. Ephrem the Syrian states that the Apostle was martyred in India, and that his relics were taken then to Edessa. This is the earliest known record of his martyrdom.

St. Matthew: Was martyred in Egypt or in Persia. Later Church fathers such as Irenaeus (Against Heresies 3.1.1) and Clement of Alexandria claim that Matthew preached the Gospel to the Jewish community in Judea, before going to other countries. Ancient writers are not agreed as to what these other countries are.

St. James the Lesser: James, son of Alphaeus, “James the Less” mentioned in Mark 15:40 as the son of Mary and Clopas. According to the first century Jewish historian Josephus, he was stoned by the Pharisees. This is seconded by Hippolytus. A James was arrested along with some other Christians and was executed by King Herod Agrippa in persecution of the church. Acts 12:1,2 However, the James in Acts 12:1,2 has a brother called John. James, son of Zebedee has a brother called John (Matthew 4:21) and we are never explicitly told that James son of Alphaeus has a brother. Robert Eisenman and Achille Camerlynck both suggest that the death of James in Acts 12:1-2 is James, son of Zebedee and not James son of Alphaeus. In Christian art he is depicted holding a fuller's club (when identified with James the Less). Tradition maintains James the Less was crucified at Ostrakine in Lower Egypt, where he was preaching the Gospel. (continues page: 7)

June 2, 2019 “The Ascension does not point to Jesus’ absence, but tells us that he is alive in our midst in a new way.” – Pope Francis 7

Ascension Sunday

Goodbyes are never easy, not even for Jesus. His departure and ascension was both an end and a beginning for his disciples. While it was the end of Jesus' physical presence with his beloved disciples, it marked the beginning of Jesus' presence with them in a new way. Jesus promised to send them the Holy Spirit who would anoint them with power on the Feast of Pentecost. While they were sad the disciples were also filled with a profound JOY and with great anticipation for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Jesus has completed his earthly mission and he asks the apostles to be witnesses to his saving death and glorious resurrection and to proclaim the good news of salvation not only to the people of Israel, but to all nations over the world. We, as believers, have been given the same task. We are not alone in this task for the risen Lord works in and through us by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours.

How the Apostles were Martyred…

St. Jude Jude/Thaddaeus: He went with Simon to preach in Armenia. The Catholic saints index says he was clubbed to death. According to tradition, Saint Jude suffered martyrdom about 65 AD in Beirut, in the Roman province of Syria, together with the apostle Simon the Zealot, with whom he is usually connected. The axe that he is often shown holding in pictures symbolizes the way in which he was killed. Their acts and martyrdom were recorded in an Acts of Simon and Jude that was among the collection of passions and legends traditionally associated with the legendary Abdias, bishop of Babylon, and said to have been translated into Latin by his disciple Tropaeus Africanus, according to the Golden Legend account of the saints.

St. Simon Simon the Zealot: Tradition holds that he was martyred in Persia or Edessa. In art, Simon has the identifying attribute of a saw because he was traditionally martyred by being sawn in half. St John the Beloved St. John was the only apostle not to be physically Martyred, however he suffered spiritual martyrdom at the foot of the cross. Also tradition holds that he was boiled alive but the hot oil would not harm him.
