2 “Repentance comes from the heart.” - Sonny Perdue December 9, 2018

Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners:

We have begun the beautiful season of Advent. I thought it might be helpful to answer some common questions about this unique liturgical season. As we prepare for the Coming of Our Blessed Lord, let us try to enter into the Reason for the Season, Jesus Christ Our Lord. Have a Blessed Week.

Fr. Harrigan - The Pastor

Know about ADVENT

1. What Is the Purpose of Advent? Advent is a season on the Church's liturgical calendar--specifically, it is as season on the calendar of the Latin Church, which is the largest Church in communion with the pope. Other Catholic Churches--as well as many non-Catholic churches--have their own celebration of Advent. Advent has a twofold character: • as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ's first coming to us is remembered; • as a season when that remembrance directs the mind and heart to await Christ's Second Coming at the end

of time. Advent is thus a period for devout and joyful expectation.

We tend to think of Advent only as the season in which we prepare for Christmas, or the First Coming of Christ but as the General Norms point out, it is important that we also remember it as a celebration in which we look forward to the Second Coming of Christ. Properly speaking, Advent is a season that brings to mind the Two Comings of Christ. 2. What Liturgical Colors Are Used in Advent? Particular days and certain types of celebrations can have their own colors (e.g., red for martyrs, black or white at funerals), but the normal color for Advent is violet. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal provides: The color violet or purple is used in Advent and Lent. It may also be worn in Offices and Masses for the Dead [346d]. In many places, there is a notable exception for the Third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday: The color rose may be used, where it is the practice, on Gaudete Sunday (Third Sunday of Advent) and on Laetare Sunday (Fourth Sunday of Lent) [GIRM 346f]. 3. Is Advent a Penitential Season? We often think of Advent as a penitential season because the liturgical color for Advent is violet, like the color of Lent, which is a penitential season. However, in reality, Advent is not a penitential season. Surprise! According to the Code of Canon Law: Can. 1250 The penitential days and times in the universal Church are every Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent. Although local authorities can establish additional penitential days, this is a complete listing of the penitential days and times of the Latin Church as a whole, and Advent is not one of them. 4. When Does Advent Begin and End? Advent begins on the evening of a Saturday falling between November 26 and December 2 (inclusive), and it ends on the evening of December 24th, which holds Evening Prayer I of Christmas (December 25th). 5. What Is the Role of Sundays in Advent? There are four Sundays of Advent. The General Norms state: The Sundays of this season are named the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Sundays of Advent. We have already mentioned that the Third Sunday of Advent has a special name--Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is the Latin word for "Rejoice," which is the first word of the introit of the Mass for this day. The Church ascribes particular importance to these Sundays, and they take precedence over other liturgical celebrations.

December 9, 2018 “Repentance is a change of willing, of feeling and of living, in respect to God.” - Charles G. Finney 3

6. What Happens on Weekdays in Advent? It is especially recommended that homilies be given on the weekdays of Advent. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) states: On Sundays and Holy days of Obligation there is to be a Homily at every Mass that is celebrated with the people attending and it may not be omitted without a grave reason. On other days it is recommended, especially on the weekdays of Advent,

The weekdays from 17 December to 24 December inclusive serve to prepare more directly for the Lord's birth [Norms 41]. This special role is illustrated, for example, by the Scripture readings used in the liturgy on these days. 7. How Are Churches Decorated During Advent? The General Instruction of the Roman Missal notes: During Advent the floral decoration of the altar should be marked by a moderation suited to the character of this time of year, without expressing in anticipation the full joy of the Nativity of the Lord. 8. How Is Music Performed During Advent? The General Instruction of the Roman Missal notes: In Advent the use of the organ and other musical instruments should be marked by a moderation suited to the character of this time of year, without expressing in anticipation the full joy of the Nativity of the Lord. I 9. Is the Gloria Said or Sung During Advent? Neither. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal provides: [The Gloria or "Glory to God in the highest"] is sung or said on Sundays outside Advent and Lent, and also on Solemnities and Feasts, and at particular celebrations of a more solemn character [GIRM 53]. 10. What Private Devotions Can We Use to Grow Closer to God During Advent? There are a variety of private devotions that the Church has recognized for use during Advent. The most famous is the Advent Wreath, and the Advent Calendar.

Practice situational awareness as part of your holiday travel plans

At Christmastime, families come together to spend this blessed season surrounded by their loved ones, and for many families, this involves some travel. Parents with young children who are hitting the roads or the airways should be practicing situational awareness to ensure their children’s safety. Situational awareness means staying alert and knowing what’s going on around you. Keep an eye out for suspicious activity, and know where your family members are at all times. Don’t allow yourself to become distracted by your phone or other electronics—it only takes a minute for a child to disappear from your eyesight. For more holiday travel tips, visit http://www.catholic.org/ travel/story.php?id=65521. 8-9 Diciembre

WEEKLY HOLY HOUR On Wednesdays at 6:00 PM

In order to convert America and save the World what we need is for every parish to come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in Holy Hours of prayer (Saint Mother Teresa). Every Wednesday at 6:00 PM there is a Holy Hour in the church. It begins with exposition of The Blessed Sacrament. Within the hour, there is a rosary, followed by a time of silent reflection and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. The Holy Hour concludes with Benediction. Please come and spend one hour with Jesus. This is a special time of abundant blessings for all!

December 9, 2018 “Repentance means you change your mind so deeply that it changes you.” - Bruce Wilkinson 5

Dear Mary Star of the Sea Community, We are preparing for Christmas as we enter the Season of Advent. Last week December 3rd we had Reconciliation for grades 3 thru 8. We will have celebrations, such as Honor Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12, celebrate Los Posados on Dec. 20, as well as regular Friday masses. Parents, families and parishioners are invited and encouraged to join us! Last weekend, the student-athletes, band members, cheer squads and families of MSSE and MSHS gathered together to promote our community while marching in the “Spirit of San Pedro Holiday Parade”. Promoting our “One School” philosophy and all of its benefits throughout the Harbor area is an important goal. Today, Sunday Dec. 9, is the “One School” Winter Sports Mass at 9 am. Bringing all of our children together to celebrate Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, through the mass, is more than a gathering, it is our mission as Catholic schools.

MSSE is accepting applications for our Pre K thru 8th Grade classes. Financial Aid and sliding Tuition scale are possible with completed application; please call our Office (310.831.0875) to arrange for a tour and information.

God bless!

Mr. James Cordero - Principal

MSHS Winter Sports Mass, Pancake Breakfast and Bake Sale: The 9 a.m. Mass on Sunday, December 9th includes the introduction of our Winter Sports teams. Please join us after Mass in the Parish Auditorium between 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for a tasty breakfast and bake sale. Tickets are $8 with proceeds benefitting the athletes of our high school. Every year Mary Star High School holds a toy drive to provide for children who are less fortunate in our San Pedro community. We humbly ask for your help by donating a new unwrapped toy or cash to the MSHS main office that will be used to assist those families. The toy drive will end on December 14th. Please remember those in our community that are in need and continue to hold them in your prayers. Thank you for your generosity. MSHS senior, Joseph Octave, signed his national letter of intent to play basketball for Air Force. Air Force is a Division I basketball school that competes in the Mountain West Conference and plays teams like of Hawaii, San Diego St., Boise St., and Nevada to name a few. Congratulations to Joseph and the Boys’ Basketball team. MSHS collected pet food for the pets that were affected from the recent fires. The food was delivered to the fire zone distribution centers through Pedro Pet Pals.

FFFAITHAITHAITH FFFORMATIONORMATIONORMATION

John invites a change in our lives – to give up what is wrong and do what is right and best, all the time focusing on the One to come. Advent is a time of committing ourselves to the joyful lifetime of service with the Lord.

In today’s Gospel, we hear the words from the first reading quoted. We see the ultimate fulfillment of those words in John the Baptist and the person of Jesus Christ. God’s full presence has come to dwell with His people through the Incarnation. John the Baptist was the precursor to Jesus, the Messiah. He prepared the way for His coming. In particular, we see Him announcing the coming of the Messiah and helping people prepare their hearts to meet Him by “proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” What follows this passage is the baptism of Jesus by John, which began Jesus’ public ministry. Thus, we see here John preparing the people to encounter the living God as He would walk among them and minister to them through His preaching and healing. So, too, we are called to prepare to encounter Jesus. We are to open our hearts everyday to receive Him and let Him be the king of our lives. How do we do this? Just like in the Gospel, the first step is repentance of our sins so we can receive God’s forgiveness.

Recycling: Thank you to all who help us to recycle so that we can purchase resources for the children. We are also helping to save the earth.
