THE U.S. BISHOPS ADDRESS SOME MAJOR ISSUES

I was impressed by an article recently from the Religion News Service in early August of this year.The report included a study of over 160 press releases dealing with public policy issues from January2019 through July 2020, published on the website of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the authoritative voice ofthe U.S. bishops on public policy. This is, in my view, an objective way of looking at how the US Bishops as a whole, haveaddressed a number of issues relevant to this year’s federal elections. Here’s a summary:

There’s no doubt that the bishops make a priority of abortion and other pro-life issues: More than 30 press releasesaddressed life topics in the past 19 months. “We are deeply grateful for the President’s pro-life commitment,” one releasesaid, “and for all the actions this administration has taken to protect unborn children and their mothers from the violenceof abortion.” The bishops made clear their opposition to fetal tissue research, assisted suicide, government funding ofabortion here or abroad, as well as their support for state and federal restrictions on abortion.

The bishops consistently sided with the administration on issues of domestic and international religious freedom. Theyhailed measures allowing healthcare workers to opt out of performing or assisting with abortions or other procedures theysee as immoral. They were also delighted by the Supreme Court’s decision in favor of the Little Sisters of the Poor, an orderof nuns who opposed the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate.

Another dozen or so releases stood by the administration’s positions on issues affecting LGBTQ persons. The bishopsvoiced opposition to the Equality Act, which would extend the discrimination protections of the 1964 Civil Rights Act togay and transgender people, and which passed the House in May. They were disappointed when the Supreme Court, inJune’s landmark decision in Bostock v. Clay County, Georgia, ruled that LGBTQ individuals were covered by the act. Thebishops also commended a proposed rule change that would allow faith-based adoption agencies to decline services to gaymarried couples without being excluded from federal aid as a result.

In a dozen other press releases, the bishops supported the administration’s efforts to expand government aid to faith-basedagencies, including education.

In 22 press releases on immigrants and another 13 on refugees, the bishops attacked the administration’s policies as“misguided and untenable,” “unacceptable,” “appalling”. The bishops spoke out strongly and frequently in support of theDACA program, argued that migrants and refugees should be welcomed and treated with compassion. They railed againstthe facilities used to detain immigrants. The bishops, along with their Mexican counterparts, also opposed building the wall.saying it “first and foremost is a symbol of division and animosity between two friendly countries.” The bishops opposednew rules and regulations that “eviscerate our current asylum system.” And urged us to “look at the root causes ofmigration, poverty, violence, and corruption.”

The bishops frequently disagreed with the administration on foreign policy as well. They opposed withdrawing from theINF Treaty and allowing the START Treaty to expire and urged more efforts toward nuclear disarmament. They alsocontinued to encourage trade, tourism and cultural exchanges with Cuba. They called for “necessary diplomacy, courageousdialogue, and tireless efforts toward peace to resolve such global conflicts as with Iran.”

While not radical, the language of the bishops on “Black Lives Matter” protests is different than the administration’s. “Weshould all understand that the protests we are seeing in our cities reflect the justified frustration and anger of millions ofour brothers and sisters who even today experience humiliation, indignity, and unequal opportunity only because of theirrace or the color of their skin.”

Finally, when it came to addressing the COVID-19 crisis, the bishops were most concerned about getting healthcare andeconomic help “for those most vulnerable: the poor, the elderly, the homeless, those in prison or detention facilities,immigrants and refugees, and those with severe underlying health conditions.” The bishops noted the need for “sufficientprotective equipment for all essential workers. They supported increases in paid sick leave and food security programs,including SNAP and the Emergency Food and Shelter Program. Although they praised the CARES Act, they found it“disappointing that certain aid and relief was not extended to the undocumented… and certain immigrants.”

Meet the DeLuca family! Mike and Myra have been parishioners at Mary Queen for over 18 years. They havefive children. Their three daughters Jessa, Kenna and Brynn went to Mary Queen School and Jessa and Kennagraduated from Lexington Catholic High School. Kenna and Brynn have been active as Altar Servers. Sam andWill both 13 keep the family constantly busy and fill their life with joy.

Mike and Myra serve as Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers. They have participated in CRHP (Christ RenewsHis Parish) and ACTS (Adoration Community Theology Service) teams and Mike has been on the core team forACTS. Mike and Myra have been involved with Why Catholic groups. Mike and Myra have been sponsors forMarriage Prep.

Mike has enjoyed “That Man is You” -- a prayer sharing group for men on Saturday mornings. He is a memberof The Knights of Columbus and has also been involved as a sponsor for RCIA.

Myra has been on the team for the Elizabeth Ministry helping families with new children. The whole family hasbeen involved in Youth Group. They have gone on Youth Group mission trips. Kenna was a participant for theCatholic Leadership Institute. Mike helped chaperone NCYC and Kenna and Brynn were participants.

Both Mike and Myra have worked in the health field. Their love for community extends outside of Mary Queen,devoting time to Catholic Action Center and BUILD. We are so blessed to have a family who shows their faithin so many aspects of life.

Social JusticeBUILD - Build (Building a United Interfaith Lexington through Direct action) has a yearly process that startsin the Fall with our listening process. Listening is foundational and essential to the work we do. The issues wevote on and work on come from the experiences and stories we hear in our house meetings. This year throughoutLexington’s 26 member congregations we plan to have 100 house meetings, potentially listening to 800-1000people! Imagine, 1000 people listened to, sharing what is of serious concern to them. Listening to what makesthem angry.

When I first started in BUILD being asked to share what makes me angry was uncomfortable for me. Anger Ibelieved was a negative emotion, to be buried, ignored, denied. But I am learning that there are different kindsof anger. There is HOT anger and COLD anger. To act out of hot anger, or rage is not what we are calling for.Cold anger is to be enraged, “it is the contradiction between the world as it is and the world as it ought to be”.(Why Stories Matter: The art and craft of social change by Marshall Ganz, Sojourners Magazine, March 2009).Cold anger calls for action and supplies the inertia to move from the way things are to the way they could andshould be.

Fr Dan recommended an excellent book to me, I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness byAustin Channing Brown. She also talked about anger quoting Audre Lerde’s essay “The Uses of Anger”. Lerdesaid “that anger is not a shortcoming to be denied, but a creative force that tells us when something is wrong…Focused with precision it can become a powerful source of energy serving progress and change...Angerexpressed and translated into action in the service of our vision and our future is a liberating and strengtheningact of clarification.”

Taking action around the stories and struggles that people are experiencing gives me, and I hope you too, HOPEin a better community for everyone. The goal of BUILD is to have a better community for us all. It begins withus sharing our struggles and stories of what enrages us, energizing us to take action and make Lexington a Cityfor God.

We now have at least 13 house meetings at MQ planned between Sept. 3 and middle of October. All the ones inEnglish will be virtual on Zoom. Fr. Dan will be doing several in Spanish socially distanced in person. Pleaseplan to attend a house meeting. who, with a heartfelt sincerity, have told me what makes Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary special—you are afamily. I've also been told that you have THE best pastor, principal and people. Our youngest daughter, Hannah, will be a freshman; our youngest son, Matthew, will be a senior. They both willattend Lexington Catholic. Our oldest sons, Jordan and Isaac, will be attending college. Our oldest daughter,Alex, just graduated from Murray State and is considering a campus ministry position.

I was the St. Mary Business Manager in Woodstock, Illinois, for fourteen years. Within the last year, I wasnamed the Pastoral Associate. I bring with me my management experience of a Catholic church and school,knowledge from my accounting and marketing degrees, and a passion for evangelization. Before making this move to Mary Queen, I heard within my heart these encouraging words: "Be open to the

great opportunities that God sets before you to build His Kingdom." That message was for me, but I've alsoembraced it as my hope and prayer for you. St. Mother Teresa once said, "I can do things you cannot, you cando things I cannot; together we can do great things." I will do all that I can to serve you, the parishioners of MaryQueen, staff, priests and pastor, Father Dan. I grew up in the Dominican Republic and moved toNew York as a teenager. After graduating from PennState I then traveled around the country working forvarious charities and youth developmentorganizations. The last couple of years I had theopportunity to work at Seton Catholic School, whereI played a role as an infant care and middle schoolSpanish teacher.

Bookkeeper . . .I am Erin Harney, bookkeeper for the Parish office.

I was raised in Lancaster, PA. I moved to Lexingtonin 1999 when I was transferred with my sales job. Igot married in 2000 and have two sons, both studentsat Lexington Catholic. Since my children were born Ihave primarily worked part time jobs inadministrative roles for the flexibility.

I was raised in the Catholic School system and havealways had a call to service. I have participated inmany programs both in the community and throughchurch. I volunteer at God's Pantry, the Hope Center,and the Catholic Action Center.

I received a call from a friend about the part-timebookkeeping position and was excited knowing that Ihave some time available throughout each day andthe skills needed to help make a difference. I enjoyhard work, organization and attention to detail, allnecessities for bookkeeping.

I will be handling the day-to-day bookkeepingresponsibilities that include offertory entry andaccounts payable as well as other projects that mayarise.

I am excited to see the church following therenovation and get to know many of the parishionersthat make this parish so special. Thank you for thisopportunity.

Mary Queen School NewsFrom the Principal . . .Welcome back! I wasn’t sure I was going to be ableto say that this year. I am so grateful for this brandnew school year, familiar and new faces, it is good tobe back together again as a school family.

We are blessed with new teachers this school year.Mr. Chris Kent will be teaching music to all ourstudents, Ms. Emma Casey, Mary Queen alum, willbe teaching first grade, Ms. Alexis Sturgill, also aformer MQ student, will be teaching in our thirdgrade and Ms. Hannah Pendleton will be teachingfourth grade. We also have Mrs. Erin Spring as ournew 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Michelle Weitlaufteaching our middle school language arts. We areblessed with an amazing staff!

Our students are adjusting well to all the changes tokeep them safe while we open our doors to face toface instruction. But even remaining six feet apartand wearing masks can’t hide our enthusiasm forbeing together again. A special thanks and shout outto everyone who helped us to prepare for this newyear – to the ladies who made face masks for all ourteachers, to Buchart and Wachs Orthodontics andMaskies for providing the maskies to help us to notlose our masks; to White, Greer and MaggardOrthodontics for providing masks for every student.Thank you to the Smith family for the 6 standinghand sanitizers and sanitizer to go in it. NO TENGAN MIEDO… LA HOSTIA EN LA MANO DURANTE LA PANDEMIA

Es increíble que estamos todavía en el tiempo de pandemia después de unos seis meses. Para nosotros, discípulos de Jesucristo, es necesario mantener los ojos fijos en Jesús y recordar frecuen-

temente sus palabras dulces, “no tengan

miedo.” Es importan-te que, como Iglesia, sigamos haciendo

todo lo posible para proteger la salud y

el bienestar de nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Aunque haya algunos que siguen negando la realidad del virus, existen varios miembros de nuestra comunidad y nuestras familias que conocen su realidad por su propia expe-riencia. Como miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo, nos preocupamos los unos por los otros y tenemos que estar siempre listos para sacrificar nuestra conveniencia y comodidad por el bien de los demás. El mandamiento de amar al prójimo, que viene de Cristo, es algo que tenemos que poner en práctica todos los días. Con el retorno a clases de las escuelas, nece-sitamos tener mucho cuidado y estar frecuentemente lavándonos las manos, manteniendo la distancia de 6 pies o 2 metros, y usando los cubrebocas cuando estemos en contacto con otros.

Estamos contentos de que ahora esta-mos celebrando las Misas, aún con res-tricciones, y sigo pidiendo que los adultos mayores y los que está más delicados de salud deben seguir participando en Misa por el Internet. En las Misas, gracias a Dios, he notado el cuidado y el respeto a las nuevas normas diseñadas para prote-ger la salud de todos y les agradezco su cooperación. Esperamos volver a cantar más, a juntar las manos y saludarnos

como antes; pero mientras que exista el virus vamos a hacer lo mejor posible para participar activamente en la Misa con las restricciones necesarias.

Una de las restricciones que ha cau-sado preocupación para varias personas en la comunidad hispana, es la de la ne-

cesidad de recibir la sagrada comunión en la mano. Yo creo que es necesario dar una explicación y sobre todo insistir que de ninguna manera es la recepción del Cuerpo de Cristo en la mano una falta de respeto. Como todos saben, la Ultima Cena del Señor en la noche antes de su muerte fue la primera Misa. Jesús y sus discípulos estaban participando en la Cena Pascual de su tradición judía, y Jesús pasó el pan y el vino que se hizo su Cuerpo y Sangre a los apóstoles en la mano. Por muchos siglos los cristianos recibieron la hostia consagrada en la mano y tomaron el caliz en sus propias manos para beber de él. Era durante una época de muchas supersticiones que la Iglesia necesitaba insistir que los fieles recibieran la santa comunión en la lengua y no en las manos. Por-que mucha gente guardaba la sagrada hostia para compartir con sus animales enfermos o para guardarla en su casa y hacer sus propias devociones en vez de comerla. Por eso la Iglesia cambió la práctica más antigua, de recibir la comunión en la mano según la instruc-ción de Jesús, “Tomen y coman, todos de él.” Unas instrucciones antiguas dijeron que los fieles deben hacer un trono de sus manos en forma de cruz, con la mano derecha bajo la izquierda- la forma que volvimos a usar después del Segundo

Concilio Vaticano.

gar en la boca por costumbre y tradición, que lo han hecho siempre así. Cuando volvamos a lo normal, podremos hacerlo de nuevo. Entiendo que hay otros que lo hacen por reverencia y respeto. Admiro mucho a los que entienden que especial es el don de la Eucaristía y que quieren mostrar en cada aspecto su gratitud y reverencia. Pero hay que entender que la reverencia es, en primer lugar, una actitud interior. Expresamos las actitudes interio-res con gestos exteriores; pero lo im-portante es la actitud hacia el Santísimo Sacramento. La lengua no es más santa que la mano, son parte del mismo cuerpo

mucha lástima saber que hay personas que han dejado de comulgar solamente porque no pueden recibir en la lengua. La lengua no es más santo que las manos. La prohibición de recibir en la lengua es solamente para preservar la salud de los otros. No es higiénico que el sacerdote o ministro toque el interior de la boca y luego le dé la comunión a otra persona, sobre todo cuando sabemos que el virus se comparte precisamente por la saliva. Favor de mostrar toda reverencia a Cristo en la Eucaristía, y no dejes de comulgar en la mano.

Este mes celebramos el Día de la Inde-pendencia de México y de otros países Centroamericanos. Espero que todos disfruten de estas celebraciones con cuidado y pensando en la salud. ¡Que viva nuestra comunidad hispana!

AYUDA A ALGUIEN EN TU COMUNIDAD - ESCUCHA A DIOS

EN LA COMMUNIDAD

Mi punto personal de vista es que siempre he sabido que solo el Señor nos da la paz interior y la paz que este mundo necesita. Aunque ya conocía al Señor, no quiere decir que siempre lo he escuchado cuando Dios clara-mente ha estado a mi lado.

Cuando llegué a Harrodsburg, Kentucky, busqué la Iglesia Católi-ca, como ya lo había hecho en Japón y Guam cuando vivía en esos lugares. En St. Andrew, Harrodsburg, asistía a la Santa Misa en inglés, ayudaba con el grupo de jóvenes y mis cuatro hijos eran monaguillos. En el 1996, el sacerdote me pidió que leyera las lec-turas en español en un funeral. Tenía miedo de leer, pero lo hice porque me lo pidió el sacerdote. Mientras leía la palabra de Dios, mis lágrimas corrían como un río porque solo pensaba en la madre que no podía estar con su hijo que había muerto en los Estados Unidos. Su madre estaba en México, solo podía imaginar su sufrimiento. Saliendo de la funeraria, vi muchos campesinos llenos de tris-teza. Les dije que yo haría lo posible para ayudarlos. Esta es la primera vez que recuerdo el haberme puesto en el lugar de otras personas.

Mientras asistía a la Iglesia Católi-

ca de San Andrés, recuerdo haberle preguntado al Señor: "¿Cuál es mi propósito aquí? ¿Por qué me mandas-te a Kentucky?" No mucho después de eso, el sacerdote me pidió que lo ayudara a comenzar una Misa en español en Harrodsburg y mi res-puesta fue: ¡Sí, por supuesto, Padre! Ya sabes lo que dicen, “You can lead

a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink.” ("Puedes llevar un caba-llo al agua, pero no puedes obligarlo a beber".) Aunque el sacerdote se escuchaba un poco estricto, la gente sabía que al Padre Joe le importaban los hispanos. Empezamos a asistir a las Misas en español unos pocos, pero fuertes en la fe en Dios.

Después de unos años de tener Misa en español, recuerdo haber dicho: "Dios, necesitamos un coro, alguien que toque la guitarra" y reci-bimos un guitarrista. Unos años más

el Padre Noel Zamora, que apoyó a la comunidad hispana. Le dije que ha-bíamos celebrado la Virgen de Gua-dalupe por muchos años, pero que no teníamos una estatua de María. Él les pidió a algunas personas y recibimos dos estatuas de María. Tuvimos que construir una Gruta para María afuera

de la iglesia. Aquí es donde las perso-nas son bienvenidas a rezar y a dejar

En el 2010, algunas personas del hospital vinieron a la Iglesia a hacer chequeos de salud antes de la Misa y después de un año de hacer che-queos de salud, nos dimos cuenta de que la gente necesitaba acceso a un

doctor. Pensé, "Querido Dios, estas personas necesitan un médico, por favor, ayúdame a ayudarlos".

Pasaron unos días y un representante de Centro Latino, una agencia sin

ahora nuestra gente tiene acceso a una clínica. Desde entonces la familia Flores ha estado encargada de la Misa en Harrodsburg. Yo comencé a ser voluntaria del Centro Latino. Lo que yo le he pedido al Señor, me lo ha dado.

En el 2019 el Padre Estacio me pidió que le ayudara a comenzar la Misa en Danville, Kentucky, con el permiso del Obispo John Stowe, y lo hicimos. La llegada del Padre Anthony McLaughlin fue una gran bendición.

Mi mensaje, mi pasión, mi dedi-cación viene del Señor. Escucha al Señor con todo tu corazón y sentirás su amor. Ten una relación intencional e íntima con el Señor y te traerá la paz que busca tu alma. Hazlo siempre no solo en estos días tan difíciles.

CHARIS ES IMPORTANTE PARA LA RENOVACIÓN CARISMÁTICA

servicio para la Renovación Carismática internacional

La palabra Charis viene del griego que signi-

hebreo bíblico el termino Charis (χάρις) se

amorosa, favor, en particular a la gracia mise-ricordiosa de Dios. Este es el concepto central de la teología desarrollada por San Agustín de Hippo.

Este es un resumen – para leer todo el documento visite la página web mencionada arriba - de lo que El Cardenal Kevin Farrell, Prefecto del Dicasterio para los Laicos, la Fami-lia y la Vida nos menciona de la importancia de la creación de CHARIS para la Renovación Carismática: La visión que el Papa Francisco propone para la renovación Carismática Cató-lica, y las tareas que él ha establecido para sus líderes y para sus miembros, forman parte del modo como el Santo Padre ejercita el carisma de Pedro y de como busca cumplir su misión como Pastor de la Iglesia universal.

Lo que el Papa pide a la Renovación Caris-mática Católica hoy y para el futuro es que ella se entienda a sí misma como un instrumento pastoral al servicio del Sucesor de Pedro… Debemos comprender con profunda docilidad que la Renovación Carismática no pertenece a sus miembros sino, más bien, a la Iglesia.

El movimiento Carismático ha sido un mo-vimiento que ha crecido de abajo hacia arriba, de persona a persona, a través de iniciativas privadas, impulsadas por el Espíritu. Es el cumplimiento de deseo de Jesús: ‘He venido a prender fuego a la tierra, y ¡Cuánto desearía

que ya estuviera encendido! (Lucas 12:49).’” Nos comenta que el Espíritu mueve a la Igle-

sia de esta manera a menudo, cambiando la vida de las personas encontrándose personal-mente con Él, y esto ha obligado a los Pastores

Espíritu y alentar su obra divina. Hay ejemplos de esto a lo largo de la historia de la Iglesia… Francisco de Asís, un laico que le permitió a

Dios que moldeara su vida, y al hacerlo creó la centella para una profunda renovación de la Iglesia cuyos frutos aún son visibles hoy en día. La Renovación Carismática Católica ha dado

2) El Santo Padre espera que compartamos con todas las personas en la Iglesia la gracia del Bautismo en el Espíritu Santo (11). 3) Él es-pera que evangelicemos con la Palabra de Dios para proclamar que Jesús es el Señor y que su amor alcanza a todas las personas (12)…

Durante el Gran Jubileo del año 2000, San Juan Pablo II exhortó a la Renovación Carismá-tica: “¡Busquen siempre a Cristo! Búsquenlo meditando la Palabra de Dios, búsquenlo en los sacramentos, búsquenlo en la oración, búsquenlo en el testimonio de sus hermanos y hermanas” (14).En su invitación a volver a lo esencial de lo que la Renovación ha recibido, el Papa Francisco nos exhorta a redescubrir la

Palabra de Dios como nuestro primer amor. “En los primeros días, se decía que ustedes carismáticos siempre llevaban una Biblia, el Nuevo Testamento […] con ustedes. ¿Todavía la llevan hoy? […] Si no, vuelvan a este primer amor” (15).

Consejos para los lideres tomados de San Juan Pablo II:

En primer lugar, “El papel del líder es, antes que nada, dar ejemplo de oración.[…] Con

-tud, le corresponde al líder asegurar que el

patrimonio multiforme de la vida de oración de la Iglesia sea conocido y experimentado por aquellos que buscan la renovación espiritual ”.

En segundo lugar, deben preocuparse por proporcionar alimento sólido que nutra espiritualmente mediante el partir el pan de la verdadera doctrina. El amor por la palabra re-velada de Dios, escrita bajo la guía del Espíritu Santo, es la garantía de su deseo de “mante-

En tercer lugar, como líderes en la Reno-

cooperación con los obispos, quienes tienen la responsabilidad pastoral de pastorear todo el cuerpo de Cristo, incluida la Renovación Carismática.

Es en esta lógica que CHARIS servirá a la Re-novación Carismática Católica, en el Servicio a todas las expresiones de la Renovación, dando soporte, brindando capacitación y formación, ayudando en el discernimiento, fomentando la misión y ayudando a aquellos que sirven en todos los niveles a evitar las tentaciones recurrentes de buscar la diversidad sin unidad y de buscar la unidad sin diversidad.
