Mary, Mother of Divine Grace Parish

A Catholic Community of Divine Infant Jesus Church and Divine Providence Church & School

January 12, 2020

The mission of the faith community of Mary, Mother of Divine Grace is to inspire spiritual growth by worshiping, teaching and living by example

our love of Jesus, His Church and our neighbors.

Volume 20 THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD January 12, 2020

My friends of Mary, Mother of Divine Grace Parish,

Perhaps you have seen me at Mass, or performing my duties as the new sacristan for Divine Infant Jesus and Divine Providence. My name is Sr. Susan Najjemba. I am a Catholic nun, member of the Religious community of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Reparatrix-Ggogonya (I.H.M.R) based in Uganda. I have served the Lord and his people as a religious sister for seventeen years. I served as a full-time Sacristan at our Motherhouse for two years. For six years I was in charge of Liturgy on different levels; within our Mother-house community, at the neighboring parish and as a member of the Liturgical committee of the Archdiocese of Kampala, Uganda. In this capacity, I was involved in facilitating Liturgical workshops and preparing Liturgical Celebrations in my Religious congregation and at the Sacred Heart Cathedral-Lubaga, of Kampala Archdiocese. For five years, I served in our formation house where I taught a Liturgy course to our Novices and trained them as altar servers. This ministry gave me a chance to meet new people, to work as a team and to understand the importance of preparing for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass; in order to experience a personal encounter with the divine, leading to spiritual transformation.

Most of my education was in Uganda. I graduated from the Uganda Martyrs’ University–Nkozi with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 2009. In 2016, my superiors sent me to far off Omaha to enroll in the Christian Spirituality Program at Creighton University. In December this year, I graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Christian Spirituality with a certificate in Spiritual Direction. This program gave me the opportunity of understanding the presence of Christ manifested in the gathered assembly, in the word proclaimed, in the presiding priest and in Our Lord’s real presence in the Eucharist, the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar; all of which call for reverence for the sanctuary and whole Church as a sacred space.

I am grateful for this great opportunity to serve in this ministry as Sacristan for our parish, Mary, Mother of Divine Grace; serving the Catholic community of Divine Infant Jesus and Divine Providence Church and School. I would like to thank the Pastoral Ministry and Parish Staff for entrusting me with this great responsibility. I receive it with humility to serve with love and commitment and I am excited to work with the two churches where I have already felt at home because of the warm welcome. The love, respect, and help I have received from all of you is greatly appreciated. I have realized that each of our two Churches are so special and unique in many ways, but we are one community called to celebrate our unity in diversity. I am looking forward to a spirit of collaboration as we build God’s kingdom, offering hospitality to all of you who come to our churches to praise and worship God our loving Father. I promise to pray for each one of you and your families that you may grow closer to God in the year 2020. Sr. Susan Najjemba, IHMR Sacristan

HAIL IMMACULATE OF MARY,

PRAY FOR US!

“Live a life worthy of the calling you have received.”

New Parish, New Calls to Service

The Knights of Columbus are a strong supporter of the Pro Life Movement. Recognizing the changes in our Pro-Life Group Parish activities and fundraisers, the Divine Infant Jesus Council decided to make a $500 donation to the Women’s Care Center in La Grange.

On January 3, three members of our Council delivered the check and were given a tour of the facilities before office hours. We were shown the ultrasound machine, which the Knights of Columbus helped purchase, counseling rooms, and a “store” where women who earn “coupons” through various parenting classes and other activities can purchase clothing and other items for their babies.

The Women’s Care Center is a nationwide organization that help women with crisis and at risk pregnancies. With the abortion issue being a large political topic, organizations like this need all the support they can get. Please keep this organization, it’s workers and the women who come to them for help in your prayers.

Our Council will continue to support the Women’s Care Center with future outreach opportunities.

THIS IS MY BELOVED SON

This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season. In the scriptures we see one more epiphany, or manifestation, of the Spirit of God in Jesus—but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of his prophetic mission and the messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism in water goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. Catholic Schools Week begins on the last Sunday in January. Schools typically observe the annual celebration

week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its

contributions to our Church, our communities and our nation. This year’s theme, “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed,” encompasses the core products and values that can be found in Catholic schools across the

country. Not only are we teaching students to become future servant leaders, faith-filled disciples and enriched citizens in our communities, we, as educators, are growing with them.

In Catholic schools, we are all learners, servants, and leaders. These shared qualities are what make Catholic schools work. They are what make Catholic schools succeed.

Meditation: Saint Anthony, Abbot (Memorial) Mark 2:1-12

Unable to get near Jesus. . . , they opened up the roof above him. (Mark 2:4)

Four men carried their friend to the house where Jesus was preaching. Foremost in their minds was getting as close as possible. No matter what the obstacles, they would push through and not give up. “If we can just get to Jesus,” they told each other. They weren’t sure what to expect, but all the stories of healing they had heard filled them with hope and expectation. They wanted Jesus to heal their friend. What a beautiful image for intercessory prayer! When we intercede, we bring ourselves into the presence of Jesus—and we bring the person or situation we’re praying for right along with us. Filled with hope that Jesus can do anything, we lay the person at his feet and ask him for help. But how do we get ourselves into the presence of Jesus? One way is to start your intercessory time with worship. Set aside everything else that’s on your mind and focus on how wonderful Jesus is. Praise him for his power and mercy and love. Thank him for everything he has done for this person or in this situation already. Fix your heart on all that is good and holy and beautiful about Jesus, and you’ll drive out the fear, doubt, and anxiety that can keep you from knowing his presence. If you find doubt or worry creeping in because it looks like no answer is coming, imitate the men in today’s reading: don’t give up! They went so far as to climb the roof and take off the tiles so they could lower their friend in front of Jesus. Try to persist as well! Remember, Jesus knows the situation or the person completely; he won’t abandon you. Also, as you intercede, stay confident that Jesus is at work, even if it’s behind the scenes. It was that kind of confidence that drove the men to do whatever it took to reach Jesus. When Jesus sees your persistence, your confidence, and your faith, he will be moved with compassion. You can make a real difference. Your prayers can move Jesus’ own heart. That’s the promise of today’s Gospel—a promise that God wants you to never forget.

“Jesus, I bring my loved ones into your presence. I believe that you can change everything.”

GET EXCITED ABOUT THE ORDINARY! Christmas Time and Easter Time highlight the central mysteries of the Paschal Mystery, namely, the incarnation, death on the cross, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ, and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The Sundays and weeks of Ordinary Time, on the other hand, take us through the life of Christ. This is the time of conversion. This is living the life of Christ. Ordinary Time is a time for growth and maturation, a time in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history until all things are finally caught up in Christ. The goal, toward which all of history is directed, is represented by the final Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. –USCCB

ABOUT THE COVER PICTURE

Although it may look grainy and of poor quality, the photo is actually of a tapestry that hangs in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, CA. The tapestries created by artist John Nava for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels are the largest collection hanging in a Catholic place of worship in the United States. Throughout the ages, large scale pictorial wall cycles have served as one of the most effective forms of literary expression, vividly telling the stories of the Greeks, Romans, Medieval and Renaissance periods, especially to a largely illiterate population. The tapestries are part of this heritage and link the very contemporary Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels to this long tradition. In modern times, as in the past, tapestries have served as an art form that can combine great size with intricacy of detail, and in the Cathedral serve to soften the tonal quality and enhance the acoustics. Behind the Baptismal Font is a set of five tapestries with a central depiction of Jesus being baptized by St. John the Baptist in the River Jordan. They are each forty seven and a half feet high and seven feet wide. The total square yardage is one hundred seventy six square yards of tapestry.
